Many nursing students don't even know about Peds home care! I get experience with trachs, ventilators, g-tubes, etc! It is awesome!
francesca paleracio Get your footing in bedside. A lot of home health companies do minimal training and it can be a lot to learn on your own. I’m a new nurse and I ABHOR bedside it’s the absolute worst. I’m stuck for 2 years, I know at the end I’ll have tons of knowledge and experience that’ll help me be a competent home health nurse.
Yes! I love doing peds home health :) It is so gratifying to build a relationship with the munchkins, babies, and kiddos as well as their families. You get to witness their progress developmentally and medically over time. Helping to wean off of vents and g-tube feeds is difficult, but so gratifying to help facilitate. Some of the patients are quite high acuity, and stable enough to be at home is not really stable so much as it is "stable". Many peds home health patients are very medically fragile and clinically complicated. It is definitely a different level of self-reliance working nights in this specialty, but one that I love more than anything else.
@@fdpc517 Not sure if you are still considering it, but I would definitely recommend applying to peds home health agencies. As long as they are willing to train you, and provide you with a good preceptor it's definitely worth considering. The pace of learning is not quite as overwhelming for a new/new-ish grad as a hospital setting. You learn each patient's routine, medical history, care, and baseline 1:1, which allows you to build a stronger holistic framework for understanding all aspects of your patient's care.
Dialysis nurse! Providing renal replacement therapy to patients with ESRD. I have been working at an out patient dialysis unit for 1 year and love the experience so far.

To name a few: • Immunization Clinics • Well Baby/Child Exams • Pre and Post Natal Home Visits • Sexual Health Clinics • Well Woman Care • Harm Reduction (clean needles, clean crack pipes, condoms) • Communicable disease case management • Emergency Preparedness • Health Promotion • Advocating for healthy public policy • Advising government regarding legislation affecting population health
@@johnnygomes7500 I was a public health nurse consultant for the State. I thought I had the best job in the world. Most consultants came up from the county, but I actually started at the state level. I thought I didn’t like being a nurse until I discovered public health.
Community Outreach Nurse here! I started my career in cardiac step down unit and then a trauma floor, but I always wanted to be a community outreach nurse. Now I've been doing my dream job for some years. I have hours at the clinic but I mainly go were my clients/patients need me. I work from home as a nurse coder and ❤️it. I post work from home nurse jobs when I find them. Nursing has so many options and you have to stay in a job you hate. There is also clinical appeals, clinic documentation specialist, pharmaceutical sales, and so much more.
Thanks Blake, I am a new nurse, I can do bed side nurse but I always think its not my best potential and I hate when I cannot do the best comparing to my friends who have more people skills than me. After your video, I have more confidence in pursuing my BSN and open more doors for me to my career!
Keep looking. You will find your perfect fit. I was ready to quit nursing entirely until I discovered public health nursing. I went on to a 35 year career and never looked back.
Something I learned from the nurse I shadowed a few weeks ago is you can be a nurse on a cruise 👀 the company she was telling me about required 4 hours of work per day & then you do whatever you want for the rest of the day! Your expenses are also covered!!
I know a few nurses: emergency room, respiratory therapist, hospital. One friend did hospital ward, correctional, and insurance exams for the NYFD. We envied her that last job.
Love your videos Blake!! You are spot on, and as a nurse for over 30 years, and you make me laugh out loud even after all this time. The one thing we have as nurses is the ability to make each other laugh!! Thanks for showing all the opportunities out there. I hope the nurses who are starting out really think about the most important member of the team- the patient- as I am reading a lot of comments on how much nursing "sucks, etc?? There are a lot of opportunities, but before you jet off to work at a resort, or any other nursing option, take the time to really learn the profession, and how to BE a nurse. With COVID 19, my mantra of "everything begins with Med/Surg bedside nursing", was shown to be accurate in spades!!! Some of the craziest, beast-mode, like being at a war front, terrific nursing ever seen at my, and other hospitals!!! In the pause, I encouraged nurses who had never seen or done the things they had to do, to be proud, and to take the experience for what it is. Now the confidence level and appreciation for the job is palpable, even on tough nights. Nothing bothers or throws them off kilter now!! Kudos to all nurses out there and be safe!! No matter what type of nursing you decide to do, remember that you represent ALL of us. Corny, maybe, but true.
You didn't mention all the advanced practice rolls, hospice, legal nursing, doctor's offices, a nurse became a coroner. So many avenues. That is the joy of nursing.
Nurse Blake, you are such an encouragement! I am a new graduate nurse and am just still pretty intimidated by the bedside. Thank you for always being so positive and such a light!
Hi Nurse Blake, thank you for your nice video! I work in The Netherlands as ambulance nurse, another job outside the hospital for nurses. We have a different EMS system than in the USA. At the moment I am a Physician Assistant Student and become a new job profile when I am graduated. I love to watch your videos so keep up the good work!
Don’t forget veterinary nursing! As a veterinary nurse, you work with administering medication, catheterization, routine surgical procedures, and more for animals (:
Tessa Hammond I was going through comment this!!! I'm a veterinary nurse and love it!!! Feel like we should be allowed to do more but the Royal college are reforming this. Feel like I could collab with Blake to say what veterinary nurses do!!! We basically deal with everything and can even specialise ( like I work in first opinion and I am a also a referral oncology nurse).
I'm an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant in a pediatricoffice. I start as a bedside OB nurse. I get to teach parents, residents, medical students, nurses, anyone who wants to learn about breastfeeding. I also get to help babies feed.
Love this, Blake. But I’m a Home health RN... I definitely don’t make my own hours and there is definitely not stopping between patients for a mandatory lunch break let alone a starbucks lol. I think things always seem a bit different then they are in reality. I suppose there are those that work per diem and make up their own hours. But not most of us. The thing to know about Home Health for those interested in it is to know you are out there on your own with your license flying in the wind so you should have a lot of varied experience because you see everything from new stomas to educate on, diabetics new to insulin, wounds of every kind you can imagine from wound vacs to profore leg wraps. We do IV maintenance and dressing changes/ foley care / gtube instruction/ suture removal and post op incision check from CABGs and +++. And the pt doesn’t usually have a hospital or electric bed so we are bending over beds and finding places on the ground to sit while we do leg wraps or wound care because sometime you go to a home and they literally don’t have a chair for you. The nice homes with AC in the summer are awesome, but more often than not you can be driving down a street of beautiful homes and the one we end up at is the broken down home with no AC, no parking close by and we are shlepping our equipment and supplies to get there. And the charting in a Home health environment has different regulations than other kinds of nursing since medicare guidelines govern our services. But if you’re a person you loves to be out and something different but likes to form relationships with your patients because they are usually on service a while... and you have a strong back lol, it’s an awesome job!
I worked as an agency nurse for a while and one of my many jobs was vacation relief one summer at a home health agency. I mean to tell you - these folks work hard! And often in very poor conditions. You have to get started very early because you will have a list of diabetics to get to and give morning insulin, and make certain they have something to eat. Then you'll start on your patient list for the day. You dictate your nurses notes as you drive between patients. It was exhausting and very long days. I would get home quite late. I would like to say that I really enjoyed working for the nursing agency. I was open to try anything so I did a lot of very interesting jobs : Plasma bank, IV team, every hospital unit from ER to psych to burn unit - I did them all because I was a certified critical care nurse. I think my favorite was recovery room.
I have worked as an Investigator for our state mental health hospital. We investigate allegations of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of vulnerable adults. It was a very challenging and rewarding experience. Now I am a Utilization Review nurse so i make sure that everyone who is there meets requirements to be there and are not just being held to charge insure companies more money.
I love being an ent nurse. An otolaryngology nurse. ❤💙👩⚕️🗣I heard they deal with allergies (spring season), and disorders with the throat and ears and nose. The pros of this profession is dealing with singers like celebrities.
You can also work as a nurse for a liability Insurance company - reviewing claim files. Your patients are on paper only. You get to review the reported injuries, treatment plans, etc and advise the insurer if the plan is reasonable. This helps the insurer avoid doctors trying to pad the bills. It is a 9-5 office job.
Being a nanny is the best nursing job ! Love those babies !!!!! I helped raise 10 children working for 5 different families over a decade. Best pay ever. I am my own boss. Beautiful homes. Lots of baby hugs and kisses. Parents are so thankful for your help and guidance.
I've enjoyed your videos so far. But I was disappointed (though not surprised) that geriatric nursing (AKA LTC) was not included. Congrats on five years as a nurse. I've been a geriatric nurse for THIRTY five years. I've tried other things, but this is what I love. We have no backup specialists. We are psych/urology/trauma/hospice/med-surg/respiratory all in one. And these days, we've been getting admits straight from ICU. Anywhere from 17 to 50 patients/residents. And in some places I've been the ONLY nurse in the whole building. But for those who want long-term relationships with residents and families, this is it.
@@oscarg1006 most of the time those places are hospices, there are for the elderly population that cant stay home because they dont have the physical and/or mental health necessary to take care of themselves. Those nurses dont work alone for 60 patients, that would be really dangerous and kind of impossible lol. The nurses have a team with them of LPNs and PSW, they manage the floor to make sure that everything is ok and provide care like vital sign, wound care, medication, mental assessment, admissions, palliative care... So yes there almost all in one nurse :)
I did clinical documentation the last 6 years of my career. You make sure the physicians are documenting all the diagnoses to capture the severity of illness and proper reimbursement. My long clinical experience really helped.
I started as a CNA in a skilled nursing facility. Then a TMA in skilled nursing facility. Some assisted living experience too. Then LPN in 2013 I did skilled nursing, cardiology clinic, & foot care "in the home", ie home, assisted living, skilled nursing & senior rec center clinics. Then RN in skilled nursing, assisted living , & clinic phone triage. Next, Hospice Case Manager 😃
Ambulatory nurses wasn’t mentioned. We work Monday through Friday in out patient clinics. Many clinics have a nurse that works in a specialty. I am a phone triage nurse that will give medical advise to patients that call our office. I also give injections and manage warfarin dosing by checking INR’s. If you are burnt out from the hospital and want a career change, check this nursing job out. You are off weekends and holidays
You forgot Telehealth nurses who answer for doctor's offices after hours and provide medical advice. They work in a call center and now they could be working from home. They provide medical advice to patients and can page out the doctors as needed, even advising patients to go to the ER if their condition is serious enough. I think some insurance companies may offer a nurse advice line for their members also where they provide medical advice and educate patients on their chronic conditions and how to manage them. I even heard an ad for I think it was a heating and air company promoting a nurse advice line for children that parents could call in for medical advice for their children.

Hey Nurse Blake. Thank you for being you! Love your videos! I come from pediatric homecare nursing (trachs, vents, G-tubes, documentation ,etc). Currently, I am a substance abuse/mental health nurse in a crisis unit/residential substance rehab treatment home. 3 nights-12 hour shifts. Just giving your viewers another option (depending on where you live) because often, nurses are unaware of this opportunity as well.
I work in care coordination for a major health insurance company. It’s remote, from home - been around almost four years. Also, a note about education/leadership roles… they prefer folks that have two or five letters after their name; not three.
Am I the only one who does not like bedside nursing? I am about done with nursing school and I honestly hate bedside. I found out during my first medicine rotation that I hate it. I have heard so many nurses and people say you should start in medicine even if you hate it. But I honestly cannot see myself working in a medical/surgical unit. I wonder if something is wrong with me haha. Not sure how many options I have if I hate bedside as a new grad 😬
Thanks Nurse Blake.....besides being so adorable I appreciate all that information about different jobs for the R.N. I worked as a CNA for 10 years and if it wasn't for kidney failure that got me before moving onto LPN and RN...I ended up on dialysis instead. Would you be able to help me find a program so I can advance further to LPN....or any other position where I am not so much "bedside" but more axillary...office, homecare(which I was an aide for several years so I know about care plans etc) or anything else I don't come into contact with those that are sick because of my weakened immune system. I appreciate any information and continued your good work in your field..😊
I respect and like nurses who are compassionate and receptive of patients. I hate and despised nurse who are arrogant, prideful, immature, ugly characters, and berating of patients. There I have said it! Been wanting to for such a long time!
I just got my first bedside nursing job and I absolutely hate it. Im looking for a non clinical nursing job that pays well. Would love some help 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
ChubbyBunny Rivera just do it. It’s great money at least. It’s just the bedside that sucks. I’m looking for other nursing jobs that are not bedside that’s all.
@ChubbyBunny Rivera once you graduate it's pretty easy to get into Psych nursing which is basically a completely different field from bedside nursing so you really shouldn't be bummed out about it. Its basically night and day. Also correctional facility nursing is really different from bedside nursing as well.
I always tell people to work as a CNA in a hospital for at least 6 months when they ask me about becoming an RN. It gives you some idea of what you are about to go through as a nurse, especially if you have never worked in health care. It is rough and not for everyone. What do you dislike about bedside nursing? The answers will be a good place to start to let you know if you want to stay in nursing or get out. It is a very stressful job, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Your coworkers may be able to help you think of some other areas that you'd like better if you think you want to stay. You could start looking for other opportunities in your hospital system that are not as labor intensive as bedside nursing such as endoscopy or outpatient surgery. of Best of luck to you!
I'm a community health nurse. I work for our county in a primary care setting. We typically work with underserved populations, and our patients face a lot of challenges. It is a rewarding job, but also frustrating. 70% of our patients are smokers, compared to around 16% of the general population. Our patients often struggle to just make it to their appointments, so when they are there, we really want to maximize this time. We have team-based care, and are part of a Coordinated-Care-Organization. I love my coworkers, and I have the best hopes for my patients. After two years I figured out that bedside care was not for me, but I am happy to be making a difference in the lives of my patients in my home county.

Many nursing students don't even know about Peds home care! I get experience with trachs, ventilators, g-tubes, etc! It is awesome!
Would you recommend that to new grads? I just graduated and I’m interested in doing peds home health
francesca paleracio Get your footing in bedside. A lot of home health companies do minimal training and it can be a lot to learn on your own. I’m a new nurse and I ABHOR bedside it’s the absolute worst. I’m stuck for 2 years, I know at the end I’ll have tons of knowledge and experience that’ll help me be a competent home health nurse.
great unfortunately I did not get hired at any hospitals I applied to :( I’m still looking at other options. What would you recommend??
Outpatient specialty clinics are great. You work Monday through Friday with weekends & holidays off.
Dialysis nurse! Providing renal replacement therapy to patients with ESRD. I have been working at an out patient dialysis unit for 1 year and love the experience so far.
Anticoagulation Nurse here! I love it! I work from home, get the patient's INR lab results over EPIC, review their chart since last INR, and then manage their warfarin dosing telephonically. We work fairly independently, and develop keen communication and assessment skills. No two days are alike. I hope I can do this job until I retire. Never had a job I could say that about!
Never heard of this type of nursing, something to look into for myself…
Same here. working from home. epic. love it!
Thank you for sharing your experience. I've never heard about this type of nursing as well. How do you get in the specialty. What are the requirements? Thanks.
That intro music is the same music i would listen to during study session in nursing school. Good pick my friend.
I've been a corrections nurse for 12 years. NEVER a dull moment!!!!
I know a lot of my coworkers left bedside nursing and went to work as a medical sales rep.
Public Health Nurses keep their communities safe and healthy

To name a few:
• Immunization Clinics
• Well Baby/Child Exams
• Pre and Post Natal Home Visits
• Sexual Health Clinics
• Well Woman Care
• Harm Reduction (clean needles, clean crack pipes, condoms)
• Communicable disease case management
• Emergency Preparedness

• Advising government regarding legislation affecting population health
I want to become a CNM...and Publlic Health /Community Nursing is my close second.
Are these positions usually only done through the county?
@@johnnygomes7500 I was a public health nurse consultant for the State. I thought I had the best job in the world. Most consultants came up from the county, but I actually started at the state level. I thought I didn’t like being a nurse until I discovered public health.
My family is mainly in the airline industry, I know a nurse who also works as a flight attendant on the side.
Cool!!!
Fun fact: the first flight attendants were nurses.
Could you ask them how they manage their schedule?
I'm a Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) It's a challenging and wonderful field of nursing. The pinnacle of critical care nursing.
My dream!! :)
Wow
The highest job satisfaction of all nurses. All of them straight A students.
@pentothalman I am a nurse and I would like to become a CRNA. Can you please guide me how to get there
Community Outreach Nurse here! I started my career in cardiac step down unit and then a trauma floor, but I always wanted to be a community outreach nurse. Now I've been doing my dream job for some years. I have hours at the clinic but I mainly go were my clients/patients need me. I work mainly will vulnerable populations: sex workers, people who are homeless or in unstable living situations, people with substance use issues, and more. It's not a job for everyone, but I really like moving around the city with my backpack.
ooh that sounds awesome!
Me too! I love it but county work depends so much on grants and government funding.
I was doing home health and agreed with the target/starbucks shopping haha. I used to do that in between patients.
I work at a dialysis center! Honestly, I love it! Even if sometimes I'm exhausted
I work from home as a nurse coder and ❤️it. I post work from home nurse jobs when I find them. Nursing has so many options and you have to stay in a job you hate. There is also clinical appeals, clinic documentation specialist, pharmaceutical sales, and so much more.
Hello Simone! Did you have to get a special training for Coding? I would love to do it part-time. Thank u.
Someone told you some incorrect info
I want to travel !!
Hello Nurse Blake.😄 You deserve more followers. I really love your videos.😄
Happy Nurses's Week!
I totally agree. I'm a nontraditional nursing student and I am terrified of the floor.
Super pleasant personality. Love hearing u talk. Make more videos
I would love for you to do an interview with a hospice nurse. I have been doing hospice now for a little over 2 years and LOVE it!!
Valentijn Waltmans-Gijsen they have these in america too. They are called critical care transport (CCT) nurses.
What about Telephone triage nurse?
Don’t forget veterinary nursing! As a veterinary nurse, you work with administering medication, catheterization, routine surgical procedures, and more for animals (:
Tessa Hammond I was going through comment this!!! I'm a veterinary nurse and love it!!! Feel like we should be allowed to do more but the Royal college are reforming this.
Feel like I could collab with Blake to say what veterinary nurses do!!! We basically deal with everything and can even specialise ( like I work in first opinion and I am a also a referral oncology nurse).
Where can I find out more about veterinarian nursing?
You’re not in the US right? That would be a vet tech here, not a nurse.
Corey Heald no I'm in Scotland, UK 🇬🇧
How do you go to school for this? Is that an actual major because sis, I COULDA BEEN ON
I'm an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant in a pediatricoffice. I start as a bedside OB nurse. I get to teach parents, residents, medical students, nurses, anyone who wants to learn about breastfeeding. I also get to help babies feed.
The truth is unless you have experience in these non-bedside jobs its very difficult to enter into.
Absolutely.
HH in rural areas, you learn quickly how few and far between the bathrooms are! No temptation of Starbucks or Target in rural areas either. 🙂
Amen lol
Great video Nurse Blake! I love your perspective on the nursing profession and your adorable smile:-)
Thanks!! :)
@tydawg adventures Since when do bedside nurses look after 50 patients?
@@soha7617 I have 60 as night shift RN at long term care facility. 120 bed facility. I'm first line before we send out or wake up doctors at night.
I’m sorry but that doesn’t sound safe, I’m always getting admits from places like that.
Nursing is the only job that can do ALL jobs.
Always advance to NP or Anesthetists 💯
This man is sweet, cute, and adorable. His personality is perfect for Nursing and I bet he would make a great Doctor as well.
also a nurse can work at adult day cares which is super stress free
Can u please make a video on - what master's degree course nurses can do with a bachelor's in Nursing.(except working in hospitals)
Most of the time that is your nurse practitioners and they can have their own clinics etc
I did clinical documentation the last 6 years of my career. You make sure the physicians are documenting all the diagnoses to capture the severity of illness and proper reimbursement. My long clinical experience really helped.
LOVE your videos very helpful thank you for sharing with us. nursing student here. love from Canada
You're welcome! Thanks for watching.
There also is Utilization Management Nursing.
I am also a PHN & working on my Holistic nurse certification
What a great video and I wish you would go back and do more of these Nurse Blake
I wasnt financial free as a nurse until my 40’s and I’m still in my 40’s, bought my second house already, earn on a monthly through passive income and got 4 out of 5 goals, just hope it encourages someone that it doesn’t matter if you don’t have any of them right now, you can start TODAY regardless your age INVEST and change your future! Not quite long I started investing. I'm very curious and need help on how to enhance and increase my returns. Any good investment tips would be appreciated..
@@eadad4371 Alright so generally, investing requires higher knowledge. For this reason, It's important to have a solid support structure (financial consultant) to guide you through especially in asset picking. I operate with (REGINA LOUISE COLLARO) an investment advisor who partners with a licensed wealth management firm. For the record, the experience has been the best for my finance. She is quite popular for her services so you might have heard of her.
She made me financially stable investing through her help, now I earn on a monthly basis through her passive income strategy...So I’ll advise you do get a good Investment advisor for yourself.

WOUND CARE NURSE!!!!
Thanks so much for this video…also there are nurses who work for insurance companies doing case management and utilization review or management.
I know this is 3 years old.
However I am a General Practice Nurse(Dr Office, Family dr).
I work week days and 9 till 5 !!
I respect and like nurses who are compassionate and receptive of patients.
I hate and despised nurse who are arrogant, prideful, immature, ugly characters, and berating of patients.
There I have said it! Been wanting to for such a long time!
Awesome video nurse Blake
I'm too in search for an answer. Have you found any, if then please help .
@ChubbyBunny Rivera I was a correctional nurse... I can do a video on it:) I loved it!!! I worked at a maximum security prison!! I learned so much
I always tell people to work as a CNA in a hospital for at least 6 months when they ask me about becoming an RN.
Hi! There’s also hospice, flight nursing, traveler nurse, utilization review nurses whom also work from home 🏡

@@xckiana Hospice nurses typically work with terminally ill patients and help ensure their and quality of life during their remaining days, as opposed to working to cure or fix a patient.
