Back around 1970 I purchased 300 of these. They had been saved for several generations. They ranged from vg to unc. I have never sent any of them in for grading.
Probably not. Several would probably make ms63. They were very cheap and plentiful when I bought them. Silver was cheap and collecting foreign coins was not real popular yet. They sure have gone up especially in the higher grades.
I collected Mexican 8's for years, mostly in raw form. The count was over 200 when I got a wild hair and foolishly sold them all on fleebay. I liked chop-marks ,some had so many they started cupping. I really wish I still had them but thats life. Stupid decisions reveal stupid prizes. I'm collecting Morgan and Peace $'s now, well over the 8r count number. I enjoy watching your videos ,the taco sauce one made me think of the old Tarnx from years ago (late 70's to early 80's) when it was still available in the cylindrical plastic bottle, I cleaned some wheat pennies in the stuff, they literally became pliable 😅..you could bent them with your fingers..wild stuff. They've changed..weakened their formula now i imagine..and of course I would never clean a coin anymore ..fun times, i can remember being so mad that i had ruined coins. Anyways, thumbs up for entertaining videos 👍
Thanks so much for your kind words, it is much appreciated. I'm loving the 8 reales, it's such a tough collection but that's part of the fun - 200 of them would've been amazing! I was avoiding the chopmarked ones at first until I did more research and saw how interesting it makes them and the history it adds to the coins. It's amazing to think about those coins on sail ships travelling across vast oceans multiple times for trade, incredible to have coins survive that history.
Some nice coins there. After so many years of existence and various hands they've passed through I would be very surprised to not see 'cleaned' on most. to me it doe;s little to detract from their interesting -ness.
Hello Pete thanks for the video. It was a bit painful to watch as it seems PCGS are really tough when it comes to grading these coins. The two AU58 coins look terrific and it’s surprising they did not achieve MS. Also with the first coin notes as “environmental damage” could you resubmit with conservation removing that damage and get a straight grade? Kevin
Thanks for watching. Ya, they are quite tough on these coins, I feel like they're still working out the proper grading for them, as they don't have enough of them. So maybe down the road I'll crack some out and try for a regrade. As for the environmental damage one, I can't see what they saw so I suspect if I submitted it to NGC it would probably grade. In general if they think a coin would benefit from conservation they would let you know, so I guess they didn't think so.
Great video, thanks for sharing! I've been collecting 8 Reales for about a year now and really love the series, branching out a little into Peru and Argentina. I feel that PCGS grades these without considering the crude technology that was used to press them, they are not Morgan dollars. Do you collect also or sell your graded 8 Reales?
Thanks! Ya I love the Mexican 8 reales design. I started collecting them around a year ago, very tough series to collect with so many years and mints! But its a beautiful coin and fun to try, long way to go!

WOW that's amazing! Are you planning on getting them graded?

Ya would've been amazing to buy them in the 1970's. Great pickup!

I really like the 8 reals series. Thank you for doing this.
Thanks for watching. I love them too, will work on collecting the full set over time, but going to be a lonnnng process!
Dang, that's tough. They really don't want to give you at least an MS60, don't they?
Ya, that seemed to be the case. I'll probably be buying less ungraded morgans.

Ya, majority of 8 reales that still exist have been cleaned at this point.
