    Honestly the leafs just dug themselves in a hole too deep to get out of. Patrick Kane and Toews were both getting paid $6.5 million from 2011 to 2015 and if you looked at Chicago's championship rosters they were stacked. Even Crosby never got paid like Matthews is.
    Kadri and Clifford on the same leafs roster wouldve been scary. Leafs just dont have complete players like Marchand, Toews, Kopitar, Bergeron, or Ryan O'Reilly. Leafs have alot of problems but those contracts are the main issue.

    • @davidianson1182
      @davidianson1182 4 года назад +12

      WhatMax - you can still compare it though. I think the point was that those top Chicago players at the time were playing for well below their market value which allowed them to round out the roster with a lot more depth. Just having more money to go around outside those top line forwards makes a big difference

      I think Matthews can turn into one of those guys. He is improving on the defensive side and is already better than most of them offensively. What the Leafs can't win with is having plugs like Ceci, Marincin and Barrie making up half their D

      @@Hurricanesfan123 I most certainly can make those comparisons. Pastranak $6.7 since 2017, Horvat $5.5 since 2017, Kyle Connor $7.1 since 2019, Draisaitl $8.5 since 2017, Elias Lindholm $4.9 since 2018.

    • @HousewolfDaddy
      @HousewolfDaddy 4 года назад +13

      They’ll be forced to do more than that. After they recover their cap space from expiring contracts, they’ll have $4.1m to re-sign or replace Mikhayev, Barrie, Ceci, Dermott, Spezza, Clifford, Malgin, and Gauthier. This is where the LTIR stuff bites them in the ass. They’re going to need more than that just to resign Mikhayev, never mind all those other guys. All of those guys are basically (or literally) league minimum contracts besides Ceci, and Barrie. So if any of those roster spots cost more than $750k they’d have to factor that in. As it is, they have about $4.1m to pay about $17.8m worth of roster spots- the majority of which make the lowest allowed currently.
      The most logical piece to move is one of the main 3 players as well as Nylander, but none of that will happen. Matthews isn’t going anywhere. Tavares and Marner, nobody will take them at $11m in an equal trade, or even a trade where Toronto doesn’t feel they got screwed. Nylander is possible, but won’t happen. He’s marginally overpaid, and with the flat cap, there aren’t many teams that will be looking to take him on at $7m. He also has skill, so Toronto isn’t going to want to move him as if it was a cap dump.
      O-Dog alludes to it here, I’ve been saying it forever. You will not build a successful hockey team when you pay 3 players 42% of the cap, and 4 players 51%. The Leafs screwed themselves by signing the entire team (more or less) based on what the salary cap might be, not what it is. I’m not sure how you get out negotiated by absolutely everyone, but there’s 2 choices for salaries on the Leafs right now. Option 1: Get paid absolute league minimum or ELC $650-900k. Option 2: Overpaid by 20% or more than any other team in the league would offer.

  • @centralhockey12
    @centralhockey12 4 года назад +21

    Don’t bring back Barrie that’s step 1.
    Sign a stay at home dman or 2 that have experience. Not a Ceci, but someone who actually has history of being reliable. I know guys like Tanev or Manson are nice and shiny for potential offseason moves but guess what-they’re gonna cost you a pretty decent price! So you may need to take a shot at a cheaper defensive first option. Pysyk out of Florida is a UFA. Hamonic out of Calgary. I’m spit balling. Are they amazing? Definitely not, but hey maybe they fit the system and it could be worth a shot at a cheaper price because this team can’t be spending too much
    Sign or trade for a two way hockey player (or a few) that have some decent size. Shouldn’t be a 5’10 or under player. Bring some size to your lineup. Every offseason there’s usually quite a few two way role players. Go for one of em. Explore trading options with one or two of Johnsson, Kapanen, maybe even Nylander. If you want defensive help, sorry but maybe 2 of them have to go. Gotta clear some money.
    All in all, you’d bring in size, strength, two way hockey and a reliable shutdown option. And you lose a few skill guys. Them being so tight to the cap isn’t helping either so I’d say definitely explore a Nylander trading option but you might not have to.
    They brought in that Barbanov guy from Russia for next season and he’s more than likely an NHL player. Nick Robertson should most definitely be on the Leafs roster next season. So that’s two players that can already help fill the void of a “skill player” role. Get some physical, reliable players this offseason and dish out a couple of skill players they already have because this whole all out offense approach isn’t working. They don’t have to blow up this team.
    Keep Matthews-Tavares-Marner together. THAT should be your first line based on what they did together. Learn from that Boston, Colorado first line approach where they stack the first line. Try to see if they can mold Nylander into that second line center although he’s struggled in that position before. They’re not far off from being a more complete team but they keep making moves for all these skill or one dimensional players. This should be a wake up call

      Reimer was the future of this team. The turning point was when Brian Gionta knocked him into the net. Things just went downhill from there. Francois Allaire ruined 3 goalies that could have been our future in Gustavsson, Toskala, and of course Reimer. He tried to change their style. Then that disappointing historical collapse happened and they threw him under the bus and brought in a goalie we didn't even need in Bernier who was FAR worse than Reimer. We had a great goaltending tandem in Reimer and Scrivens But Bernier at the time was NOT a starter
      And Carlyle Leeched his confidence by giving Bernier the starting job when he didn't deserve it.
      Then when Babcock was hired he made Reimer the starter because he knew Reimer was the better goalie. Despite the was he was treated by management and fans tweeting about his wife he wanted to stay in Toronto regardless. Also Reimer was outstanding in shootouts. Signaficantly better in them than Bernier and Andersen. However Dubas, Shanahan, and Keefe ALL need to be shown the door. Probably we should think our playstyle, we should focus more on defensive side. If we defend better, we have all the skill to score goals we need if we defend better and if we don't allow 4-5 goals in every game. And this is just my opinion, nothing more. • @millionfish
    @millionfish 4 года назад +7

    The whole core is flawed.
    In the playoffs, you need guys that can play a two-way heavy game like Bergeron, Toews, O'reilly, Couturier, Dubious, etc can. That's why guys like Matthews, Tavares, Crosby, McDavid got bounced early.
    Even if you trade Nylander, you're not getting back fair value since teams know how desperate you are. It will be like the Hall for Larsson trade all over again.
    What's a joke is how Nylander, Marner both held out, got their money, then failed to show up when the team needed them. Same thing with Tavares. On top of that, how do you trade a gritty guy like Kadri, who plays the exact style of game you need in the playoffs, for an offensive defenseman, who was garbage in his own end, and will walk this summer? When the trade was made, I was thinking really? You couldn't get a guy back who is defensive minded with some term?
    Andersen can only do so much with how much of a tire fire the Leafs are in their own end. They literally just throw the puck away in danger areas like it's nothing, and have 4 guys covering one guy.

    This team has gone as far as it can go in it's current state. They actually seem to have regressed from 2017 when they gave the Capitals a much more feisty test than they did this year against Columbus. They gave up some skilled size in JVR and grit in Kadri and never seemed to have replaced it. Shanahan and Dubas need to pull a page out of Masai Ujiri's playback and make a bold move like Ujiri did when he went out and got Kawhi Leonard. Perhaps look around the league and see if there's a star player that may want out of his current situation and offer up someone like Marner or Matthews. Wonder if Conner McDavid has had enough of Edmonton?

    The Leafs are too light and peripheral. They have too many light, soft guys who can't get inside or sustain a forecheck. They have a D who can't stop the cycle or clear the front of the net. Clearly, they need to move out some peripheral players and look to fill their roles with heavier guys like Egor Korshov who although only put up a modest 25 pts in 40 games with the Marlies is 6'4", 220 lbs, plays a physical game and can skate. They should be looking to move Nylander, Kerfoot and Johnsson for a D like David Savard...not a sexy puck moving guy, but a guy who can stop the cycle, clear the front of the net, block shots and make a first pass under pressure. They should be looking to use that Barrie/Ceci money going out the door to sign such a D. AND they should be looking to trade for a guy like Josh Anderson, a guy who will crash the net, get in hard on the forecheck and can score. They should also give Campbell more opportunities next year to see if he can sustain some success. They're going to have to resign Andersen and Rielly...they might not be able to do both, so they had better start looking for a replacement for Andersen who, although a very good goalie...has let in weak goals in all the deciding games he's played in including with Anaheim.

    The fact that Spezza, a 37-year old veteran who throughout his career was primarily known for being a fancy skill guy, showed more grit and energy than any other Leafs player out there, tells you everything you need to know about this sorry ass hockey organization. Some moves I would like to see made before next season if I was a Leafs fan:
    - Fire Dubas
    - Trade away Marner and/or Nylander in exchange for a handful of quality top nine forwards with physicality and a mean streak to their game. In other words Zach Hyman type of players
    - Make Matthews, the true cornerstone of this franchise, your captain. Tavares with the C on his chest just ain’t gonna cut it
    - Every team needs a defenseman capable of putting up numbers and running the PP. Barrie is a better true offensive Dman than Rielly imo. Therefor I would explore the trade market with Rielly in search of some gritty, experienced Dmen to keep opposing forwards honest - especially come playoff time.
    - Extend Jason Spezza already

    Tampa is built in a similar way as the Leafs, but at least they have two-way, heavy guys like Cirelli, Maroon, Goodrow, Killorn, Coleman, Joseph, Palat, Paquette, etc. They also have a solid defense with Hedman, Sergachev, Cernak, McDonagh, Coburn, Bogosian.

    Andersen is another Patrick Lalime. Always lets in leaky goals in big games. He MUST go. Ignore anyone who says otherwise. If they want to win, get a new goalie, ditch 2 of the big 4 up front, and play the trap. But Leafs management wont do any of that.

      As a goalie I see a lot of good with Andersen. However, playing with panic stricken defenders slotted way about their skill level makes a goalies job WAY harder. Yes there have been a few squeakers over the last few years, but look at the defensive help. Even in gm 5 against CBJ....the second goal from the sharpe angle. The team made a horrible change left Marincin of all people all alone and he played it horribly. He didn't take the shot, he didn't block the pass, so Andersen naturally was getting ready to potentially make a save and potentially have to move across the crease for a pass...luckily the guy shot right where Andersens legs had to be slightly open so that he could get ready for that push across. Andersen had all other holes closed off. If Marincin takes away the pass, like he is supposed to, and allows his goalie to square up to the shooter and it goes in....then it is on Andersen. If he committed all to the shooter and he passed, the guy in front would have an empty net. Tough position to put the goalie in.

    Most of the leafs cap is tied up in 4 players who's strength is offense. Poss dubas thought the cap would go up more the last two yrs it hasn't and now all teams are basically stuck with a flat cap next yr or two. Leafs still have excellent talent in their top 6 but it's basically one dimensional. Nylander seems like the logical one to trade.
