      I think it depends on what you’re shooting. The colors are great on older canons and are perfect for portraiture, but it falls short for group photos or reframing. Also flippy screens are nice as well as better autofocus. Also dual card slots is a must in every camera I buy now. Once you lose an entire card and then get depressed bc you lost a clients entire shoot you’ll definitely consider upgrading for some of these features. But I know you said you’re a hobbyist and for every day stuff I think you’re perfect with which ever camera you have. But for professional paid work, it’s definitely worth upgrading for necessary features like dual card slots, and weather resistance. So do you have to upgrade every year, nope, but every 5 to 10 years. Yeah I’d upgrade. In most aspects this video is correct, but also image quality can also have to do with how much flexibility the raw images have. On my older cameras I could maybe get 2 stops of recovery, now I can get 4+ stops allowing me to recover shadows and highlights. In general like phones, don’t buy every year/release. Instead buy every 2+ generations.
      I started on a canon T2i (died due to humidity), then went to Canon 5D mark iii (better weather proofing, better color rendition, easier to access controls, dual card slots), Sony A7r ii (megapixel boost, 4K) , then to a Sony a7r iii (for dual card slots, better autofocus, and color accuracy, battery life), and finally I have a Sony A1 (best general all rounder, with better colors, 8K (allows me to reframe and crop videos, just like we do in photos, without a drop in quality when exporting to 4K), better buffer for bursts. Each camera

    One last thing I want to add the only time I think its worth upgrading is when there is a feature that will make your job better. For example when digital DSLR came out with raw files. Or if a camera just came out with raw video. The GH6 has 32-bit floating audio that's like raw audio. But there has to really be something that says ok its worth it for me because sometimes I need a feature to make my job better or to have some kind of safety net. And when cameras came out with dual card slots I think that was a good time to upgrade for wedding photography.

      Yeah when there is a significant quality of life boost, then that can be worth it! Plus also if someone just wants to then it's their money so why not? I just hate when people get caught up chasing gear rather then chasing the image itself.

      When I started using DXO to remaster my raw files I started to see white people with red cheeks that I never saw before. But again no one ever complained that they looked a little red in the cheeks. I just was never use to it not seeing it before.

    I got from D5100 to D850, DX to FX, and a huge boost in pixel count. I was editing my photos taken in Mexico City in 2017 on D5100 last week and they are totally fine. Of course with the same lens it didn’t produce the same depth of field.
    Got Zf last year mainly for all the new mirrorless features. With “only” 24MP, I haven’t found it lacking of pixel count.
    Then I got some, yes some, 44x33 digital medium format cameras. I haven’t noticed a huge difference over FX cameras. Yes 50MP is nice to have so you can crop in a lot in post. But in practice, I haven’t noticed that benefit.

    I feel there is a similar issue with musical instruments - if you're a guitar player especially (in my experience) there's so much emphasis on the gear and the need to constantly upgrade all the various parts of the signal path and think only of the tools. I've been feeling that the result is less emphasis on learning and writing music, and more about creating content that I wonder may be closer to gear demos. My main camera is a Pentax K-5, with a small collection of older, affordable lenses, and I feel that this combination really makes me work hard and learn photography. It really has the sense of learning an instrument, with a similar difficulty curve. Somehow, it also results in as much satisfaction and possibilities for creativity along the way. Do I want newer gear? Of course! But having a camera I am beginning to feel so connected to is a special thing that continues to take a lot of time and focus, and those things can't be bought.

    • @ColtonMatocha
      @ColtonMatocha  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yes that's a great point about the musical instruments situation! Same deal. More mental energy gets spent on researching new gear and setups which results in less available energy for actually creating the music and being inspired in the craft.
      Honestly, the difference between affordable and high end lens are often lost on the person viewing the photo. They aren't checking for corner to corner sharpness, or distortion. They're just enjoying whatever is in the photo. Keep on creating! Thanks for watching!

      Some of the information that you provided is inconsistent. To my understanding content creators like Jared Poland Will often either be invited to a press event Will there be given an opportunity to use the camera or the new camera will be sent directly to the content creator being given the option to use the camera for a limited time and then they have to send it back. So in fact they are not receiving free gear as you have stated. They are often sent pre-production models or review units of different kinds of gear for the purposes of review. Many of these companies do not obligate content creators to make a video that only talks about the good things about that gear.
      When content creators make their videos that will usually state that the company who sent them the gear had no editorial input on that video and it did not have advanced screening of that video. It is true that some companies will try to highlight content creators that made positive reviews of their product. There are a lot of content creators that will go out and rent or purchase with their own money a product and make a review from that.

I think not being in the market for gear at the time, I was more aware of the optics of the last few months. That being said, I think some of the challenges of creatives is not to allow these things to slow down your creativity. I been in the mindset at times of "if only I had this!", "I would be better if I had this." "I can't accomplish this unless I have that." Always invest wisely. There is nothing wrong with gear as long as the gear is not the focal point of the creativity. I have had some of my best days when I don't care about the camera in my hand and just having a blast shooting images. Absolutely agree! It's great to invest in the best tools for the job, but then unnecessary to continually be worried about upgrading those tools. If they were the right tools when you got them, they should be able to continue being the right tools. I think camera companies tell us this is the right tool and then a year later they try to make it seem like its the wrong tool and we need a big upgrade. I'll also admit that sometimes it can be interesting to see what the new gear has available, but that's also a bit risky because then that can get you sucked in to buying something.

    Ok I lied one more comment. LOL. I was thinking about witching systems a while ago and going full frame. But then DXO came out with Deep PRIME the best noise reduction and I can shoot almost clean ISO at ISO 6,4000 the newer DXO engine I can shoot clean ISO Deep PRIME xD but xD2 is better.
    My problem with Micro Four Thirds for weddings I liked to stop down a little f5.6 when people are dancing so things are in focus. But my Olympus OMD E-M1ii at ISO 6,400 looked really bad. But when I used DXO the way it remasters the raw file is like magic. See I needed that flash to recharge fast. Even at ISO 3,200 it was a little slow with the flash recharging. My flashes just use four AA batteries.
    Thanks to DXO I decided not to upgrade to full frame. I might some day buy a full frame camera but I really was not looking to replace all my gear. When I shoot a wedding I bring three cameras. I've already heard of three stories about two cameras breaking on the same wedding. Also I have enough gear if my gear got stolen and had another wedding the next day I could still cover it.
    Going full frame I would have to buy two or three of the same cameras. Because I like to at least have two of the same cameras so the raw files match. Then I have to buy my pro zooms and some back up lens and at least three flashes. Plus new batteries and maybe even new cards. Plus pay that tax money.
    I have hear from an account that sometimes its worth spending money if you can write it off on your taxes but talk to an account first.

    This is all well and true but I still want the latest camera 🙃 But yes every day it's a battle watching these gear reviews not to buy the latest. For the most part the reviews are ok but the biggest sin either guilt of omission or the down playing of the cons and an exaggeration of the benefits. Mostly at this point of my career I pay for things that make my life easier and if the image quality improves a little I'll take that too.

    • @ColtonMatocha
      @ColtonMatocha  5 месяцев назад

      And there isn't any shame in wanting the new gear, but yeah I find that the cons are mentioned but downplayed and the positives are almost always made out to be game changing when really most of the time they are just a marginal improvement. I'll alao add that it is cool to see cameras improve over time but I like to make my upgrades much less frequent so that I notice a big change when I do finally upgrade.

      Look at even the cheapest of android phones. The finger print scanner works flawlessly to unlock the phone to the point we don't even think about it
      In it's most basic form.. Photo/hybrid Camera bodies should have a similar biometric security built into the shutter button or the grip. Positioned so naturally that you don't even think about it.
      More advanced forms should include lens pairing rendering the lens useless to anyone else unless it's unpaired from its host body.
      Think of when you've given an iPhone away to a nice or nephew.. they can't use it until you un-pair it from your iCloud account.

    This narrative (getting the latest X...) also hurts the photographers who make a living in the commercial industry. The Videos are considered a standard even for clients (who may watch these videos), even though the technological changes are negligible. They are bombarded by "fake photographers" if you will who, instead of offering quality in composition, color or presentation, they offer "more megapixels". The true is that most if not all the main brand cameras from 2018 and ahead are sufficient for internet content. If you need to go to print on a billboard you will use a medium FILM format or Digital Format, but the reality is that MOST of your clients DO NOT NEED prints that big. The reviewers have destroyed the industry, have created a monster on camera companies, that are feeding us old technology in a revolving door. BTW as a suggestion: Buy property with your profits, DO NOT waste your money on new equipment. KEEP your good lenses and squeeze the maximum of your camera.

      True, yeah if you're doing it as a business then even more so you have to be able to financially justify the purchase. Will the money you spend translate into making more money? If not, then it's usually not a sound business decision. I don't do it as a business anymore so I can't really speak to that side of things as much as someone else could.

      Those are good questions to ask! Honestly, I think most people (myself included sometimes) want to view a new camera as the answer to all our problems when in reality for most cases it would change nothing. I'm not totally anti camera though. I just think there is a bit of an oversaturation of marketing new cameras disguised as organic content. What kind of stuff have you filmed?

    I suppose it's the nature of capitalism - to upgrade. I tend to downgrade. What you did not mention is that upgrading not only entails spending more for gear - it also impacts post-processing. I recently acquired a used 34 MP Nikon D800 and it really is an awesome camera. But the RAW files are north of 200MP. In my case that increases my time in post by 3 fold. I also have a sweet 6 MP Nikon CCD D70S. And for most images I really cannot tell the difference. And there is no way I intend to upgrade my computer to handle those enormous files. Same deal with Canon. My beloved 2006 Canon 30D recently died. Should I replace it? Well, I did the most rational thing - I acquired the camera that inspired the 30D - The 2004 Canon EOS 1D Mark II - a downgrade? Not really, but a spectacular camera in so many ways.

    • @ColtonMatocha
      @ColtonMatocha  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah those are massive RAW files. And with that comes a need for a more powerful computer to be able to handle those files. That's truly large. I think the Fujifilm gfx 100s creates 200mb files.
      I recently replaced my A7 iii with a Pentax 645D. Major change up.

    The "concentrated effort to release all at the same time" that you speak in the first bit is just NDA. That's the earliest the reviewers can legally release their videos. It's nothing more. It's not a conspiracy against the consumers. If you don't know about press release dates in this day and age, I'm really surprised. It takes a LOT of credibility away from your content. Release dates and NDAs have existed for literal decades already. How on earth have you not heard of them?

    • @ColtonMatocha
      @ColtonMatocha  5 месяцев назад

      No I've certainly heard about that and am fully aware of why it is that they release at the same time but that is also literally part of the marketing campaign for the company releasing the product. So whether intentionally or unintentionally the channel releasing the content is now part of the marketing campaign for that camera. The end result is on the day of launch you suddenly have a flood of reviews all about the same camera in your recommended videos. Its not a conspiracy, it's very obvious. Camera brands know the value of reviews and they are absolutely taking advantage of that to sell more cameras.

    • @AnnaVahtera
      @AnnaVahtera 5 месяцев назад

      @@ColtonMatocha It's only a marketing strategy if the NDA drops too late to cancel pre-orders and stop people from buying "in the first wave." If the NDA drops early enough that consumers can watch these reviews and decide before ordering or buying, it's not so much of a marketing strategy as it is "how things should be done."
      They just all upload the videos on the same day because as a RUclipsr you should know that's how you get views - be the first one. (Unless you're one of the biggest channels, then it doesn't really matter.)
      You just seemed to blame these reviewers for the marketing, and most of the time it's the exact opposite. The reviewers are telling people the truth about the product and not what the ads say. Or if they aren't, you're watching the wrong reviewers.

    • @ColtonMatocha
      @ColtonMatocha  5 месяцев назад

      @@AnnaVahtera We'll I'd still consider it a marketing campaign because regardless of when the videos drop your getting the word out about your new camera. I'm not intending to blame the reviewers since they're just playing the game, but the result is just that photography RUclips has become dominated by gear content which manufacturers are happy to play to. The end result I feel is that a lot of people end up getting convinced to upgrade to something they don't need. There is almost no one telling people that most the time they don't need to upgrade and so I wanted to contribute that sentiment and make people feel more confident using the gear they already have.

    • @AnnaVahtera
      @AnnaVahtera 5 месяцев назад

      @@ColtonMatocha You're watching the wrong reviewers ;) Almost everyone I watch tell viewers to not upgrade. That upgrade only if this feature X is something you expressly need. And even then most of the time they add that upgrading is only if you make money out of it. That for hobbyists just use whatever you have access to.
      Maybe we just watch different content creators, but I've literally seen nobody I watch recommend updates for anyone else but pros and those that absolutely need X feature.
