Gigli! What a genius! Nobody is even close to his vocal quality and technique nowadays. His skilfulness is mindblowing. And at the same time, his vocal expression is outstanding and breathtaking. I think every contemporary tenor students should learn from his recordings and technique. I will certainly try to. :D
Wonderful! What a magnificent historical document this is! And from such an early time, also. Gigli couldn't act, but anyone who can stand there and pour out that golden tenor voice, on and on and on doesn't have to act! Who cares? What a magnificent tenor he was! Thank you so much for posting this wonderful footage!
Amazing singing! How full of effort is modern opera singing compared to this. No wonder audiences don't laugh or cry any more - the singers have become passionless machines enslaved to their loud inflexible voices.
Gigli was very loud, just a big free magnificent sound. Not one tenor today has the power Gigli had. He sang in front of 10's of thousands without amplification.
This is a real gem. Even though it lookd odd to us today, the grand voice of Gigli is superb. I see nothing funny about Millo Picco. He was appearing in a serious role in a serious opera. Perhaps the viewer needs to dwell more on that
***** - Jozef - Where did you find this (excerpt)? I have some Vitaphone shorts, thanks to my friend in Arizona, but THIS one, I've never heard of. Thanks for making it available!!
***** - Thanks for the specific info! I guess we should THANK the old Vitaphone entity (and whoever was responsible for MAKING this, rare video ... w/in the old corporation) for a such a representative example of Gigli, at his characterful best. His tone goes a tiny, bit-SHARP at a few times, but not damagingly-so. This is one of those examples of a great, seemingly-OLD evidence of a time when GREAT singers could don make-up, and go thru the usual, dramatic gestures ... but none of the latter would MASK/obscure the most-remarkable contributions that they would make, to classical/operatic legacies.
Watch him carefully here. Look at his eyes. He is acting...in his own way. Just like he is singing in his own way, like no other tenor could. The only one who rivals him is Enrico Caruso.
So who are the other singers here with Gigli, if you can tell me? Who sings the baritone role of Alfio, and likewise, who is the mezzo appearing as Mamma Lucia?

Gigl has to have the smoothest sounding voice I have ever heard. Loud or soft, the voice comes out without effort
Tenors of today cannot hold a candle to this man
Magnificent edition, that I saw for the first time. Gigli is 37, in his full maturity: incredible breath, superb phrasing, a great!!
Between 1925 and 1934 Gigli's voice was at its best.
Nice to see and hear this in such good quality. My favourite tenor of all time. Who else can sing this part to such an amazing standard? No-one.
MrMalcie - He might as well have been Turrido. He was not playing a role.
Beautiful
Perfecto!
How fortunate we are to have this wonderful document of the great Gigli.

Gigli at his best. The voice is full-throated and well-modulated throughout. Note the wonderful quality of the middle register.
Verdade bem tenro .
Thanks........Gigli in fine form also his acting A1. !!
Beniamino Gigli - Cavaleria Rusticana 1927 film (HIGH QUALITY)

grande Gigli!
Ídolo. !!! Nadie lo superó ni lo superara !!!
Impeccable use of the breath. Viva Gigli!
Absolutely beautiful,charming and perfect performance.
My all-time favourite tenor of all time also...My fav. recording by him "Sicilian Wagoner,s song by Gibillaro "
Jozef, from Peru, South America Gigli was my father´s idol.
mine too
When the old guard in the opera world talk about what the art form has lost...this is it...pure characterization and expression through the voice
Fantastico documento! Grazie per averlo postato, Jozef!
Thank you so very much indeed for posting this gem. Gigli, beyond words. But also, I loved the Sicilian mamma, so in character!
Minnie Egener who made 1 recording with Caruso
Simply amazing that these old Vitaphone shorts can now be restored to look and sound so good!
Maraviglioso fu Gigli!!! BRAVO!!!
His Addio alla Madre is unbelievable. His voice seems to flow out naturally and completely unforced.
Wonderful 👍 Thank you so much for uploading 🙏
La voce dell'Italia. Elegantissimo.
Beniamino Gigli is masterly!!!
Amazing singing! How full of effort is modern opera singing compared to this. No wonder audiences don't laugh or cry any more - the singers have become passionless machines enslaved to their loud inflexible voices.
don't blame the singers. they have no power now, and the circumstances they have to work in are very different. others are at fault
Gigli was very loud, just a big free magnificent sound. Not one tenor today has the power Gigli had. He sang in front of 10's of thousands without amplification.
@@abcdefgh-db1to WERE FUCKING TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT YOU ASSHOLE
Insuperable!!!!
😂😂😂😂 Grande voice 👍
Meraviglia ❤️
herrlich der junge gigli

FANTASTICOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Em cada nota, uma lágrima.
THANK YOU!!!
Grandissimo Gigli!!
Divino .
-How I would have loved to see him in the entire opera.
Gigli appears in Mascagni's own complete recording of the opera from 1940.
Rare and Priceless! Bless you for posting this true treasure!!!
Thanks, download in case of......

John B The voice sound sharp because the film is projected at the wrong speed. Trie to lower the tone via loud speaker.
Gigli is criticized for not being an actor. WITH A VOICE LIKE THAT WHO CARES ??
Watch him carefully here. Look at his eyes. He is acting...in his own way. Just like he is singing in his own way, like no other tenor could. The only one who rivals him is Enrico Caruso.
Da brividi❤
Grandísimo el Beni
exquisito gracias
Che sopresa e godimento !
terrific. Is this available on DVD? I love Gigli, Caruso and Bjorling - the three super greats.
That is miraculous singing!
MARAVILLOSA
Great!!!!! Wonderful!!!
Grazie !!!
Magnificent!

1927? I thought "The Jazz Singer" was the first sound movie?
TRAUMHAFT UNERREICHBAR
Unglaublich gut
Where did you find this? Is it of the complete opera? Where can I buy this?
Brilliant. Thanks.. .
grazie grazie tank you for that
mi ha fatto piacere
enjoy!
un raro filmato con GIGLI

I think the best was caruso and gigli and Mario lanza in history
Lanza was not an opera singer and lacked the self discipline to sing something like this.
Guido Picco I believe was Mario Sammarco
Only Caruso can equal Gigli
But Gigli cannot equal Caruso
