- Only footage of Berger. Ave Maria was a film made in the "spirit" of the new German-Italian entente.
With Käte von Nagy & Harald Paulsen.
Berger has always been my favorite singer. Hearing her here with Gigli is a revelation. They both have such pure, precise voices, full of emotion but perfectly controlled.
Incredible Gigli and Berger on film. Wonderful.
Curious that Gigli seemed to have 2 voices. This light one when a microphone was present, and a spinto voice in live opera. The famous Manon Lescaut ! He is an entirely different singer.
Mrs Berger was a fantastic singer, and Gigli supreme.
Sublime Performance by both, The best of the best
stunning in it's beauty the voice of Gigli; the mezza-voce unrivaled by other tenor; with di Stefano and Wunderlich the most beautiful tenor voice recorded.
Thanks for the post.
Gigli y Pavarotti. Luego le sigue Carreras, Wunderlich, Volpi, Pertile, Tagliavini y Di Stefano.
Thank you so much deeply in my heart for your sharing...
Love both voices...his acting on the stage a little short of physical expression.
Grazie

Fa venire in memoria altri meravigliosi duetti Tito Schipa Toti Dal Monte Lina pagliughi,,Gigli Toti dal Monte ,ormai custoditi nella nostra memoria
oh that we could hear--and see--singing like this today. So beautiful and sensitive! God bless them both and God bless Verdi--i wish he could have heard this..well he did hear Adelina Patti and Fernando Lucia--about as close im sure.
Thank you for publishing this historical clip. I have admired Gigli for years, but never saw a moving picture. How wonderful to finally see this old movie. What a voice!
+maggie deveney see also my 1927 Rigoletto quartet
I am so happy to hear those both fantastic singers.
Diese Gesangskultur wäre auch heute einmalig.
So many thanks for your posting!
Thanks again for this unseen movie clip !!! Beautiful Gigli...and Erna Berger..the light coloratura...
secretofsinging - O mon dieu he was wonderful, as was Erna Berger. She sounds kind of like Rosa Ponselle. Was Gigli better than Caruso? I never would have thought so but after hearing and seeing so many recordings I might think that. Oh heresy!
UN DUO MARAVILLOSO
My God, what a beautiful voice. He actually looks pretty good at this age, also. Can't act, of couse, never could:-) But he's still Gigli!
Edmund StAustell - He's acting in his voice. This is heavenly.
Edmund StAustell - He could too act. And I thought rather well.
SIMPLEMENTE MARAVILLOSO
Gorgeous musical performance!
I agree!
TRAUMHAFT SCHÖN
UN BELLO DUO
Wunderbar harmonierend
Semplicemente stupendi
mitico gigli
Unico
What an amazing historical document of operatic culture in Germany in the mid-30's. Seeing this for the first time, I finally realized what Gigli meant to his generation. I had a hard time appreciating Erna Berger since her light coloratura gives her smooth sailing in Sempre libera, but then there's the rest. I've often wondered what Verdi was thinking when he wrote Traviata - the only soprano I know who could carry off both the coloratura in Act I and the dramatic intensity in the following acts was Callas. On the other hand, pitch was definitely lower in the 19th century and even if slightly so made a difference to the voices. Not criticizing, just interested in what others think about this apparent disparity in the composition.
Erna Berger's sublime technique and tone is vy appropriate in my opinion
Brawi!
When I was about 16 (Now 83) I went to see Gigli in his farewell performance in London. I loved his voice on the records we had and I have to say I was so disappointed. He was old (to me) maybe 60 and his voice was thin and not a patch on his best. But nevertheless I am glad I went so I can say I saw him.
he was crooning since the 1950's
Il Grande Gigli ❤
Gigli and Lauri-Volpe studied in Rome with the same teacher.. Comparing him to anyone today is very difficult. He never uses too much voice and for that reason he doesn't sound like modern opera singers. So his is the model, and not what we hear today.
My fav for this ? Lanza
Sorry that doesn't make sense! , what I meant was Gigli....Caruso.......Pavarotti....All voices that will be remembered forever!!
fan bloomintastic !
Será a Internet ? Sur La Liberté de Lá Consciente de Voltaire?
Enorme documento. Gracias por editarlo !!!
thanks so much.
Always interesting to see opera performed during an era long preceding its "invention". That is, long before the layers upon layers of so-called "hidden, secret meanings" were at last unearthed by someone named Maria Callas. Which is nonsense.
Amen! Opera was and should be glorious music, not tortured screaming histrionics from worn out voices a la Maria.
Niemals.
A shame he wouldn't stay at the Met, where I'm sure he could make more than in Italy, but he was a god there
""Only footage of Berger"? What about the Furtwangtler Don Giovanni? Plenty of footage of Berger there!
I was about to say the same - and I'm sure there's wartime footage as well

Believe it or not, there's also a video - "The Marriage of Figaro", with Ms. Berger - very fine!!
Sound tracks in movies don't give an adequate impression of operatic voices since the recordings were greatly enhanced. Berger sounds shrill here but on records she is light and girlish. Rise Stevens said that she was filmed singing an octave lower and then dubbed with her own voice so her mouth would not be distorted on film.
Gigli Caruso
Stupenda...
Is this a movie? and other people are actor? (besides Berger and Gigli)
yes, a german movie called "ave maria
This is probably one of THE great scenes in the movies. If you want to drive someone to suicide - get Gigli on the job! of course the woman drives off, is wrecked in a horrible horrible accident.
He was suffering from diabetes since 1935.
Jozef Sterkens - How very sad. That's a dangerous disease. Well, he was rather heavy. How long did he live?

Erna Berger is great but the tenor looks silly.
Staffan Lindström - He does not. This is the great Gigli.
@@shirleyrombough8173 He may be a great singer but visually he does´t fill the bill.
@@staffanlindstrom576 y quién lo hace Pavarotti?
I feel so terrible for Erna Berger …they will film her for her voice, but they show close-ups of everyone else, but her …I find that absolutely disgusting.😢
