- Ralph Baumgartl and Bernd-Michael Land show the legendary EMS Synthi AKS and the fabulous EMS VCS3 "The Putney". These analog synthesizers were widely used by electronic music pioneers such as Jean Michel Jarre, Brian Eno, Pink Floyd, Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream. Enjoy a video about some synthesizers that are genuine pillars of Pop and Electronic Music history.
This Vlog is bilingual, in English and German language!

OMG the famous EMS Synths - one of the greatest things musicians like me are dreaming of :)
joystick, patch panel, touch keyboard, sequencer and everything so small!
They sound and look still up to date, unbelievable that they are from late 60ies/early 70ies!
Hehe On the run sequence! GREAT!
Super informative! Mehr davon! Viele Grüße und Frohe Weihnachten aus Dresden, Rob
Hi Rob, yes the EMS Synths are just awesome! There will be another Vlog covering the EMS Logic and Synthie E. Ich plane ein weiteres Format auf meinem RUclips Kanal. Vielleicht hast du ja Interesse mitzumachen! Die Infos kommen in meinem nächsten Video. Wünsche Dir auch frohe Weihnachten und eine gute Zeit. Bis bald! Greetings Ralph
Brian Eno also famously used one in Roxy Music and with David Bowie, the guitar sound on 'Heroes' was made by processing the guitar through one which I personally love.
Hi Paul, the original version of "Heroes" is still one of the best and holds up to the test of time. Greetings, Ralph
Great eccentric old synth!
It is for sure 😃
They don't make synths like that anymore...Well...actually they "do" but it takes about a billion years to get a new one built. Excellent demo again! ... P.S. I flunked first semester of German in college (twice) but I still love hearing Bernd-Michael speaking his native tongue. Translating on the fly must be a bit challenging but you do a great job at it, Ralph.
+emdotambient You are right, these Synths have the magic touch! The incredible quality of the craftsmanship that went into these instrument is just amazing! BTW, I finally mentioned your great comment on "Berlin School" in our last Q&A video ruclips.net/video/CR7jS8T3LFg/видео.html
Thanks again for contributing this comment.
I am glad that you appreciate my translation efforts. None of our videos is scripted, Bernie and I get together and dive right into it, thus I am always a bit anxious that the right words come to my mind when I need them ;-)
Cheers, Ralph
What a treat. Thank you for this, gentlemen.
Hello Stephen, thanks for watching. These Synths are special. If you haven't done it yet, then try to get your hands on one and dabble with it. It's an enlightening experience. Cheers, Ralph
+Ralph Baumgartl VLog I'd love the opportunity. Someday, perhaps...
Two-Dog James
Put it on your "Life Task" list ;-) Cheers, Ralph
Amazing show you have here. That room must be mind blowing .
+Todd Smith Hi Todd, thanks for watching. There will be an EMS Special Part 2 very soon, in which we address the EMS Logic and Synthi E. Kindly stay tuned. Greetings, Ralph
Awesome
Many thanks for watching! Have a great week, Ralph
schon geil dein keller! was da an kult herum steht.....
Great episode, thanks!
Hello James, many thanks for watching. I am glad you enjoyed it. Best regards, Ralph
I love it, amazing video and love these machines. Wish I could afford an AKS
Hi Ian, there will be an EMS Special Part 2 soon, covering the EMS Logic and Synthi E. Kindly stay tuned. Greetings Ralph
I opted for the auto generated subtitles. The man was talking absolute bollocks!
Thanks anyway for watching.
Like being inside in arcade system
Hello Ralph! I recently discovered your excellent channel. This is my favourite video so far,as the Synthi AKS/VCS3 is my favourite synth. The first synthesizer that I heard, used by Pink Floyd, Curved Air, Hawkwind, Brain Eno(with Roxy Msuic).
If you gave me the choice of one synth from your studio, or more realistically, the chance to spend a day with only one synth there, I would choose the AKS. They are, sadly, way beyond my price range now, but I still hope to play with one, one day.
Vielen Dank! Peter
Hello Peter, many thanks for watching and for sharing your thoughts. The EMS Synths, that you can see in some of my videos, do belong to my friend Bernie. The EMS Synthesizers are also outside of my budget range ;-) I also like what Brian Eno was doing for Roxy Music with his EMS Synths. Awesome work! Cheers, Ralph
Great info Thanks ! .Composer Alan Wider still has his EMS VCS3 (The Putney) and says the sounds are unique .
Hello Bruce, thank you for watching! Yes, the EMS VCS3 is still a fascinating machine after all these years. Have a great day, Ralph
@Andy Dnetz - Hallo Andy, die analogen Synthesizer haben schon eine besondere Magie ;-) Beste Gruesse, Ralph
Radiophonic workshop have helped with its big brother 100
+ANDREW DUNNE The history of Radiophonic Workshop is really fascinating. I wasn't aware that they helped with the EMS 100. I have to read up on it. Thanks for sharing this. Greetings, Ralph
Tim Blake of gong and hawkwind also frequents the EMS. Daevid Allen’s Gong stuff was fraught with EMS goodness.
Many thanks for watching our video! Cheers, Ralph
Damn cats sleep on Conrad Schnitzler he used the Aks and his sound is nuts
Hallo Ralph,
+Ralph Baumgartl VLog super! Freu mich drauf!
Diese Preset Karten sind recht teuer und ziemlich selten! Allein dieses macht das Thema schon irgendwie interessant ;-) Viele Grüße, Ralph
"Expensive resistors!" :-)
You forgot to mention the blue pins - they are negative resistance.
+mickey thompson Hello Mickey, thanks for watching and bringing the blue pins to my attention. I will mention the blue pins in the next EMS special when we talk about the Synthi-E and Logic. Greetings Ralph
I am no electronics genius, but how can a passive device have negative resistance? Heck, how can an active device have negative resistance?
+Michael Bauers What exactly are you referring to? Which part of the video? We recorded that video some time ago...
I was thinkin' kid in a candy store, too
+Gary Weaver Well, then I guess I have just achieved my goal with this video… ;-)
Ralph Baumgartl VLog
Our American adaptation; "kindergarten" : )
+Gary Weaver Hi Gary, there is a german proverb: Im Manne lebt das Kind weiter! It vaguely means: the child lives on in grown men...;-) Cheers Ralph
On The Run...
Yes! How did you notice ;-) ;-) Cheers, Ralph
If you're an English speaker then switch on translation - it's hilarious!
