danny brown for me. i first heard him on the freshman cypher and was like wtf is this weirdo dude on, never gave him a chance. then i heard "blunt after blunt" and now he's in my top 10
Lol I was in the same boat as Ashton, don’t sweat it bro. I used to hate Kendrick’s voices back in the day, to now him being one of my favorite artists ever.
The first time I heard Aesop Rock, I absolutely hated it, I was like "Where the fuck is the bass and why is this dude rapping about some wierd painter girl and shit" Now he's one of my favorite rappers and I love the complexity he brings to even the simplest topics, like pigeons
I was always a “weird” kid when it came to music so I don’t think any rapper I listen to today would surprise my younger self. I was listening to everything from Tech N9NE to Common 😂😂😂
It definitely took me years to get behind Danny Brown. Initially I heard him on the song Ego Death with Busdriver and Aesop Rock. I thought they both blew him out of the water on that song because I was kinda where Myke was at really emphasizing more lyrical stuff when I was younger. Definitely glad I've expanded my tastes since then.
Lil Wayne, for sure. Metalhead me in high school would've scoffed at the idea of listening to Wayne. A friend of mine played 'Mirror' from Tha Carter IV, and a few years after that I listened to Tha Carter III while on lockdown in 2021. Total gamechanger, Wayne's now one of my favourites. Carter III might have my favourite beat selection of any hip-hop project, its incredible in a car with a 12" in the back
The best example of What Ashton was talking about with Kdot not matching Jay Rock's energy on songs was Hood Gone Love it. Even though I like that song Kendricks verse is like The quarterback doing a song with the debate team captain. I like the opposites on a track but I see how it can be off putting.
For me it was Eminem, Jay Z, Nas etc I was more into 50 Cent, T.I., Ludacris as a kid But when I got older I went back and realized how much I missed out on as a kid. Ofcourse I knew the big popular songs but didn’t care much to actually listen to that lyrical shit.
Same with dude, Kendrick didn’t hit for me until Section.80, specifically Keisha’s Song and HiiiPower…those 2 songs were the ones that solidified to me back in 2011 Kendrick was doing something not heard in rap since 2Pac. Deep emotional storytelling with conviction behind the voice. Not to mention that he was only 23 years old at the time. It was the revelation that Kendrick was truly speaking beyond his years.
Kendrick wasn’t doing anything different at what he was doing. GKMC was similar to certain project like Ras Kas or Nas. The reason why people love Kendrick so much is because he has a Lil Wayne like raspy voice, which Wayne is his idol and influence. He has a Andre 3000 flow and the aggressive approach of Eminem. That’s why people love him so much. I wouldn’t say he’s 2Pac of this era because ive heard people actually said that also.
For me it’s Eyedea. I liked a few songs back in the day but that was about it. I loved the indie scene but his stuff just wouldn’t hit me the same as Aesop Rock, Slug, Murs, El-P etc. and then all of the sudden, I let the Oliver Hart album play all the way through and my mind was completely flipped
Been a huge fan of eyedea and Aesop since labor days and I was always super impressed with eyedea and abilities first born was so incredible to me. I still rotate it now and then. I’m so stoked to have at least watched him live before he left the world.
@@poopymcpoop9945 My fav Eyedea project is definitely Many Faces… and I love E&A and By the throat but unlike most, I don’t return to First Born much as a whole. For me, Abilities production was too scattered, I love joints like Music music, read wiped in blue, on this I stand, but that sound was more throughout the project as a whole

The Kendrick thing was the opposite to me.. first heard Section 80 loved it.. went back listened to OD and the rest.. Good kid was fire.. but I’ve not liked a single album since and it blows my mind as I was a huge fan but Kendrick doesn’t do it for me at all now
Fantastic prompt. For me it’s Danny Brown, esp. XXX and AE. I fucking hated that voice. Then I started going through some of that shit and I immediately understood why he uses his voice the way he does.
Definitely Gucci mane but it was his fan that were more annoying then anything but like he said environment is a MF cus that will change your whole outlook on a artist
Lil Wayne Pre Carter series I couldn’t accept he changed his flow and subject matter So once everyone was like “Weezy is the best rapper alive” I’m like the wtf not the drop it like it’s hot dude 😂😂 Obviously I was dead wrong
A lot of more slow rappers like Woods and MF like Rod was saying are mine, kind of rappers I’d say I liked to seem cool but couldn’t appreciate til I got older and actually preferred it more
Great topic. I gotta say Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch. 90s white boy rappers sound fun to me now, whereas at the time it was just super lame. I could put on the Brian Austin Green album now and be fine with it.
Man these dudes really are getting old cause they definitely reviewed Carter II on the classic review and Myke actually loved the album. But here he can't even remember listening to it and praising it 😆

But I’ve grown to love and respect him. Tyler The Creator. He definitely was super weird to me when he came out and until IGOR I was not a Tyler fan..
Yeah I still find Jay pretty boring. I feel like it’s a Brooklyn thing. I find most Brooklyn rappers are just predictable in their writing. Queens rappers and Harlem rappers always had my ear.
A$AP Rocky for me when he came out. The pretty boy lyrics put me off plus all the swaggy fuck boys would listen to him in high school, I thought it was stupid. Then he was on a Big Boi song in 2012 and I was like damn this is smooth. After that it clicked and I realized how creative he really was
Tyler The Creator. 2011 - 2015 was not it for me especially when he was making weird, strange music with his deep voice and shock value lyrics but he reinvented himself on his last 3 albums and I was impressed.
Rappers that I hated back then, but like now: French Montana Meek Mill Yachty Uzi Travis Scott 21 Savage Migos Doja Cat G-Eazy Kodak Black Denzel Curry

I didn't like Kendrick when I first heard him either. I felt like he was ruining Jay Rock joints. Once my ear adjusted to his delivery, I became a huge fan.
