What a beautiful sounding engine. One of my favourite cars on Jay's Garage.
I've driven a couple of Morgan+8's and it's a total buzz!! Like driving a go cart with a V8 in it. The +8 has long been my favorite British car, a real thrill to drive. A true drivers car , you've got to manhandle it especially at speed.
1 Down 96 to go :) , And kudos to jay for not keeping all this sweet stuff for himself in a dark closed garage but putting it on here for the world to look at aswell .
I wish Modern Cars were still that good looking! Modern Cars are too fat with computers and wi-fi internet, heated seats, excessive amounts of children killing airbags, and other things you don't need, which weigh them down and then when they break or need maintenance you just can't fix it yourself you have to take it back to the dealer. I was going to get rid of my old Civic but when I look at the new cars I think why would I want something thats more complicated worse than a 15 year old car?
MORGAN
Please do not stop making the beautifal cars.
I am fourteen and hope to have a Morgan one day in the future and wish to not be too late!
Just get a used one... they all look the same...
in England we call this motor the Rover V8. despite knowing they bought the design from Buick. its pretty sad its no longer in production
Dan Sneyd You can bore and stroke the Rover engine out to 5.0 with Buick 215 parts.
It isnt a great enginge. It wears quickly, expensive to build and tune, and not very powerful, The LS range is cheaper, lighter, more powerful....
RupertFear keep on top of your oil changes and the wear is okay. Lots of Rover SD1 examples with the V8 have run over 200.000 miles without rebuilt. Just change oil every year or 5000kilometers
there's gotta be somebody in the uk making new blocks or something... I was born in seattle but my father's family are all from the uk and all car guys, they just love that motor, ive never seen but a couple-- in a very stout land rover most memorably that was a total hotrod, as were the other cars ive seen with that engine. it is hard to convey to americans how important this motor was to british hotrodders, I mean how many small-block chevys are there here? there was only one for England and that was the rover v8. they are rare indeed. there are probably as many on garage floors as there are in cars because if I was building a british hotrod in Britain I would go and find one of these engines first and THEN find a car to put it in. they are rare and indeed essentially the only motor of its type, certainly any good, and as easy to build. it is a shame that they don't make it any more... but don't they? theres GOTTA be somebody making new blocks.
This is a great site , I love this show , having quit TV several years ago , I have watched this site as long as it's been available , Thanks Jay
It was early fall, 1972. I had just started working at the "downtown" Sears & Roebuck store in Portland Oregon... 92 cents per hour, part time. I was still in highschool, just starting my senior year. I was 17 and I wanted to be "cool". When I got off the bus one warm afternoon, just before it was time to go to work, I saw a 1966 Morgan on a used car lot that specialized in nice muscle cars and sports cars. They wanted $2000 for that car.
Well, I fell in love! I just had to have that car, but how? Well I knew! I walked into the Sears Credit Union across the street and finally someone asked if they could help me. I said that I wanted to buy a car and needed a loan. The loan officer came out and I explained who I was. I said that I was new at Sears and that I wanted to buy that 1966 Morgan across the street. All of a sudden, the entire room erupted in laughter! They just couldn't believe that I had the audacity to ask for a $2000 loan! I only made 92 cents per hour, after all! How was I going to pay the loan back?
I was so embarrassed I literally ran out the door, collected my composure and went to work. I couldn't believe that they could laugh so hard about a young kid who wanted to buy a car!
Liar - that didn't happen and you know it
Who would lie about something like that? I was just a kid and you are a horse's *ss!
Great story. of course that was almost enough to buy a house back then. No wonder they laughed so much!
How will you pay it back ? 'I'll work for 2173 hours'
Did you wind up getting one later in life?
Man check out that new 2015 Mor........Wait a minute...
Naw man that's a 2019..... Wait a minute.....
@@robertmcgregor8187 Seen the 2020... Wait a minute.....
"All Aluminum and Wood"that is the reality for building a car . not today cars , all what you got is plastic and fake leather or wood dash :/
Allways been a dream to own a morgan, never happened! My father drove a Wolsey in the 60,s I had a cooper that I loved. That was many years ago The good life so thankyou mr. Leno a nice moment down memory lane
i have wanted a stock a/c bristol since i was a kid the cobra is a cool ride but when the day comes i would rather have a sunbeam tiger more of a sleeper look.did a report in 5th grade about carrol shelby as a historical figure my teacher wouldn't accept it cause she said he wasnt inportant enough my dad went to the school to talk with principle and through the talk found out mr.reams had a 65 cobra and that he would accept and grade my report.I got a b and my first ride in a piece of racing history
Drop a Buick/Rover 215 into an MG Midget like I did... simple, cheap, fast...
that's one sexy machine
A 1974 Morgan Plus 8 was my brother! My father became ill in 1999 & sold my sibling. Wherever you are......I hope you were adopted by a loving family & that you are well.
terribly sad but beautiful story. Some would say that you should track it down, but maybe its place in your heart is as good as it could ever get. thanks for sharing !!
It`s sad man. my dad had to sell his 74` in 2004:( i was born in 85. 3 days ago he came up with a 76`+8 . the smell, the looks, just about everything was so familiar. He took me for a ride. driving down the street we had stars in our eyes shining so bright you just can`t imagine. hopefully we make it with my son/daughter in the "back" one day....
Everyone wants more content from Jay Leno's garage! So do I, what a great youtube show!
Morgan started making the Plus 8 in 1968 so they were a bit slow compared with the Sunbeam Tiger and Cobra but not much
+Jacob Moses
I had a 4+4 in the late '60s and would go to the Riverside Grand Prix (my Dad was Capt. of the Riverside CHP at the time and would get me free tickets). There was a +8 owned by an older guy who would drive it down from Canada--I was in my 20s then and wouldn't do that!
A low priced dependable all aluminum lightweight V8 just wasn't available earlier...
Well you know at least Leno seems to be enjoying his mega millions, can you say the same about other mega billionaires out there? I wonder if it would be more satisfying to only have one awesome car and live in a trailer with your honey, though, on balance? James Dean had an awesome car but his afterlife is more fabled than the life he lived. Love that Morgan!
Well yes, you know what I would like to see? Ordinary people renting a Morgan for a weekend drive, can't own one easily, but a Morgan owner could make some bucks renting his out...........just an idea.
Jay, love the Morgan video. When are we going to see your TR-3 ????????
Another great film Jay, anychance of testing the new Morgan +8 and letting us know what you think ?? !!
I love the comment Jay made about us getting wider and wider over the years. My little 65 Futura convertible is becoming a snug fit.
Rover 3500 (a.k.a SD1) was one of the most beautiful British cars. It was gorgeous.
Great videos Jay, thank you for the many hours of entertainment.
jay I see that jaw of yours is very areodynamic in this video you seem to point it into the
wind
I wouldn't mind a modern Plus 8 actually, they still look great.
The true beauty in the Morgan marque is the Morgan AeroMax. That and the Jaguar D-Type are in my all-time centrespread favourites!

funny, true
I have 2 of the Buick 215's, one in an 1800 lb. '75 MG Midget, and also I used to daily drive the turbocharged Olds Jetfire version... same engine in a chain saw: ruclips.net/video/E9x8rBKC4BE/видео.html
Haha! He won't say that when he first experiences a Millington Diamond!
:edits: I know you're taking the piss, but in the case of the rover (buick) v8, it's absolutely true!
@@K1lostream - Millington costs 20 times more and doesn't have the torque to keep up...
@@BuzzLOLOL - I didn't say they don't cost a lot, but the money DOES go somewhere and Jay can afford it! - Can never hope to own one myself but I have ridden passenger in a car with one in it and - yeah, they're somethin'!
Thank you Buick fo sending the unwanted aluminium V8, the stock 3.5L only had 150bhp but when installed into a MGB weighed less than the 1.8L iron B series of half or so power, found service in Rover P series & Rangerover etc, we even had them in police & ambulance spec Sherpa vans. I gather the US never got the high performance TVR's, Cerbera, Chimera & my love, Griffith 500, a car that rewarded the talented or killed the unworthy, a device of natural selection !
mescko At least with you tube you can see those British muscle cars in action.
+Russ I was fortunate enough to attend the Goodwood Revival in 2013...the car park was the most incredible car show I've been to :-). I was parked up next to a Griffith and a Sagaris.
In that time Alfa engines produced the same power out of a 2 liter 4 cil.
Not in my 2L GTV they didn't!
In early 1960's, 4 bbl. Buick 215 made 200 HP, 215 HP in Olds top turbo version, 250 HP in 300" '64 version, engine first appeared in 1951 concept car. USA got MGA's, XK-E's and Griffiths before UK did... UK owed us money from WWII and required those cars to all be shipped overseas to bring in hard currency... lucky if 10 got sold locally to rich people...
This V8 sounds amazing!
It does. But when you hear the same noise coming from an ambulance and postal vans you used to wonder.....back in the 80's the Rover V8 was put in those vehicles too.
It was in Rovers, Land Rovers, TVRs, Westfields, Morgans. TVR tuned them up over 400hp.
@@SvenTviking It also won the 1966 F! championship in a Brabham.
I've always loved Morgan's dedication to the classic body lines. Beautiful motor car. I wouldn't have noticed the chassis flex had you not mentioned it. You can see the flex in the side shots at the door lines.
Dear Santa, I would absolutely love, Love, LOVE to find one of these in my driveway, with my name on the title!!! Make it so!
These have been a mainstay on the UK club race scene for decades, with tuning options for the Rover V8 taking it up to 5 litres, some serious monsters have been made. People think of them as old man's cars but you forget that they were pretty fast cars even from standard.
Do you think old men don't like fast cars?
Think again.
Walter Taljaard i know, i know a 65 year old guy with a 1970 chevelle ss 454 modifyed with 800hp i road in it and i was shaking when i got out
Good lucking machine, Mr Leno you are the right guy 4 U show, congrat's 😎
These Morgan's look like a lot of fun. Thanks Jay.

There's wholes drilled all over the place.the valve covers the driver side door thingy, check it out.I happen to love morgans.and this one is really nice.love it.
My Morgan +8 from 1987 is the widest ever. It has three rubber lists on the wheel arches outside the doors. It is a beast!
i'll have mine in yellow in london
My all time dream is to own a Morgan someday. I would love a +8. Actually, I would love any Morgan. Those 3-Wheel Morgan's are awesome. And the new ones being made are selling incredibly fast. The wait list is up to a year or more. "ACE" Cycle Car company up in Washington State is also producing a 3-Wheeler that is authorized by Morgan although sold as an "ACE" and has a few really cool touches that puts their signature on the car. Maybe in 5 years when I can retire? I dream on....
Most excellent. Not like my dinner. (That was more like Comedians In The Kitchen Driving A Car Over Your String Beans) The ad in the back is a bit much, and I think the roll bar should have some kind of fake wood finish. Or, simply a paint job. The newer convertibles have roll bars that wrap the seat tops instead of running a straight line. The new Morgan Aero hardtops are just incredible. I have never desired a car more than them. (I wonder if I can fit in one at 6'2") www.motortrend.com/news/fifth-generation-morgan-aero-8-roadster-debuts-in-geneva/#morgan-aero-8-front-three-quarter-04
jay leno and per gessle of roxette are eventually gonna own all the cars in the entire world it´s like that period.
I really don't want a car like this, maybe i'm not classy enough lol
hate pure protein. tastes not good
I love these shows...but it feels like sacrilege to me for them to have modified the Morgan's body like that. It's inelegant & clunky.
That magneto will piss off The Prince of darkness.
I once worked for someone that had a Plus 4. I would occasionally work on the car and get to take it on test drive. Pure fun!
Morgan is the oldest privately-owned car manufacturer in the world. It was originally entirely family-owned, but now has several select individuals who have private shares in the company. It's not listed on any stock exchange.
They have made the +8 since 1968. The Rover 3.5 litre V8's block was used by Australian F1 racing genius, Jack Brabham in 3 litre form to win the 1966 Gran Prix against competitors like Ferrari.
Thx for the Video - just reminded me that I should take a ride again in our Morgan Plus 4 from 1958 with a V8 engine implanted as drafted for the first Plus 8 prototype. Only 200HP but really enough for this tiny, light P4 chassis.

and here some pictures having a Super Sport V4 engine still

Car itself was rusty like hell when imported from US and rebuild by my father in ~ 5-7 years - more or less new car - made for fun- lots of fun :)
Jay Leno ROCKS
I have a 1962 Morgan plus 4 SS.
It has raced at Watkins Glen raceway.
Looking to find someone that can buy it.
It’s 1/2 way restored, but in pieces. I have it in a inclosed trailer.
I have been told from a shop that it should bring $212,000
Well he wants $100,000 to put it together.
I don’t want to have $160,000 in a car and maybe get 200k for it.
I may try doing it myself. If I do it will take me years to get set up in my garage.
Once I finish navigating the DMV's hoops, my late father's Plus 8 will be back on the road. Here it is driving up Big Sur ruclips.net/video/JH6aaqTLGd8/видео.html
Nice ! The owner had a grin stuck on his face the whole drive. 2000 rpm at 65 mph is my idea of a real touring car ; would love to take it across the country, like the old Route 66 show. The people in the car next to them at the light must have been thinking : "Boy, thats the kind of fun you can have when you got lots of money". Now how about that TR 3 and the MG TD I saw back there ?
She drove a 59 Morgan ,Read em and weep was her adjustable slogan ,she was a Debutante daisy with a color note organ ,Read em and weep oh la ,la la la ,laaaa
That Baby Looking Amazing Too Ride In Sounds Beautiful
most amazing v8 sound ever. wow
Ugh - gotta argue with you Jay. Having had a '00 Land Rover Disovery II with the same, 16v aluminum V8... what a SLUG. Not only did the (4.0L) motor make only 200 hp or something ridiculously low, they had inherent design flaws of press-fit liners that would drop, blocks that would crack, etc. I do NOT regret having traded my '00 Land Rover Disco II for a '95 BMW 525i!
Another example of stupid. Just blows my mind, and it's got blow-by. Junk. LOL
Great Morgan. I've seen your TR3 lurking in your shop and is there any chance of a review? Love that car.
Thanks
Hi Jay. Are you ever going to do the TR3? Anyway, always a great job.
The bonnet is open. You're half way there.
This is the first video I've seen where the owner didn't seem terrified with Jay driving.
you got your dope wrong on magnetos, mags make their juice with out a generator or battery to run the engine, but you need a battery or hand crank to turn the engine over to get spark, modern magnetos increase voltage to plugs as the RPM increases, where HEI ignitions start to miss fire after 6000 RPM
6:18 LISTEN TO JAY! DId he say PORSCHH??? If he did he INSULTED the venerable PORSCHE brand. Remember all YOU PETROL HEADS or GAS HEADS! It’s pronounced PORSCHE! Again, P O R S H C E!!! Is that understood? It’s all about respect.
R E S P E C T. Right? Bangkok-Johnnie
If you are gong to be touchy about it at least spell it consistently.
Er P O R S H C E?
Oh, and while you're on, how do you pronounce Paris for example? I bet you don't pronounce it like a French person.
I have no idea how many times I have watched this video, and I am going to watch it again!
What was said about magnetos reminded me about something my Dad told me. He drove a model t for a bakers delivery in the UK. He said it had a trembler coil and if you kicked the front wheel the engine would start! Can anyone out there confirm that?
I love the British philosophy, make them fun to drive at any speed. But the Dutch have an entry too; Donkervoort, ruclips.net/user/results?search_query=donkenvort
What is the joke, when nowadays, most of the cars are built of hardened foam?
Somewhat, with a litttle flashy rear end. Put the spare tire back on it.

All these comments saying" damn it seems like a nice car" - I imagine it's a nightmare to keep the car running good, saying the chassis is designed to be replaced every 20 years. And to get it to pass inspection in England.
I have the same engine in my classic Range Rover. I am always looking for an excuse to turn it on just to hear that Buick V8 sound. It runs like a Swiss clock with over 300,000 kms on the clock!
Just shot another hotrod 300HP Morgan Plus 8 on my Channel, check it out!
Jay, do you mind getting a much much better microphone? Because your voice is too soft when you talk in your garage. When you are outside, it doesn't matter because the car is the focus point. The car does all the talking. But when you are in the garage, its all about you. I wonder why you never did anything about the volume since few months ago when some complained about it. Maybe you should fire the boom guy.
I can imagine if they made a suv model currently that would be really wider...
Looks like caterhams older brother lol.
Nice video. However. Malvern spelt as such. Pronounced. Molvern!😄
heyjay hope yer gnarly and kickin em. wow what a car. I love it when you get beyond the usual business and start smiling when you reach the plane of American dream and go into the holy smile. that's where I'm at. Had a Shelby 95 stang. 550horse and all the Carol Shelby stuff. neighbor gave it to me. I'm in a chair and 7 feet tall so I never drove it. $85k. 200mph with a tailwind sunk into $3500 same car cobra on the seats and grill and Carol's signature . and in much better shape than mine. but the morgan don't get rear ended or you'll be cleaning tire marks off your back
The 215 was one hell of a motor. Small, light, and you could easily get over 350 HP with parts from Oldsmobile back in the early days (mid '60s up to the early '70s). I would expect that today you could easily get 450. It late became the basis for the V8 found in the Brabham F1 car that won the 1966 F1 Championship, and was also used by British Leyland in a variety of cars. It could be stretched to over 300 CI in later versions. Later cast iron block versions could be stretched to over 350 CI.
When rover added the 3.5 V8 to the rover P5 , it became the P5 B , the B stood for Buick , same engine in the 1970 Range Rover , P6 rover V8 , Land Rover V8 , ambulances , police vans , right up to the later Range Rover 3.9's etc
I had five 63 F-85 olds, two were Jetfires. my daily driver was a Jetfire 2dr. Hdtp with 4 speed and Hurst shifter. I could easily take Z-28's stop light to stop light.
I've been watching several motor car videos daily for the past couple of years and I've tentatively decided that my next car will be a Morgan (possibly the Aero).
Great engine; it was also in certain MGB's, Ginetta's, Triumph's. In Land and Range Rovers and some British sports cars like TVR and Morgan it was bored &stroked to different sizes all the way out to 5 litres (305 ci)
In the US it was called the BOP because it was in Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac. In some Australian cars as well.
I love it! Damn that engine sounds great.
They also had that motor in the Triumph TR-8, although sadly detuned. In the late ‘60s, I was tooling along an LA freeway in my Morgan 4/4 and swinging my left arm when I realized that I was touching the rear wheel. I was instantly glad that I didn’t have wire wheels as it could have either ripped a finger off or just pulled me out of the car, LOL!
Would love to see a TR3 review. I have a 1959 in my shop. I could make it run in 8 hours. Owned it since 1968. It was what sports cars were all about. Made several trips through Big Sir on Hw 1. Just fun to drive when it ran. Kept a spare transmission in back yard.
Love the 215 V8. We've got a 62 Buick Special Deluxe Wagon with that engine and it's a great power plant. Still running. Never rebuilt.
Gorgeous car! Thanks for Sharing Jay and Jason!. Great videos Jay. You should really consider doing this full time..
Like what he's done EXCEPT for those stupid mesh "filters" over the carbis inlets - those cut down the potential airflow's opening into the carbie by up to 70% with that particular version being at the worst end of that!
The owner should try with and without but it will shock him when he sees how bad they are.
"This thing will just pound your back, but that's alright, it's part of the "Morgan experience".. I wanted to tell him.. Jay, not everyone wants that kind of experience! My back hurts just watching it. Designed in 1910? You've gotta be kidding! And they kept it this long because......... It's so good? Or what?
Maybe a bath chair more comfortable eh?
Iconic. And desirable. Morgan sell all the cars they make. If you want comfort, there are hundreds of other cars which might suit you better.
275hp in 2013....now 2021, you can get a 300hp camry :D
Hit the nostalgia button hard! A buddy and I made a pre-uni road trip from Victoria, BC to San Francisco and back in his Morgan 4/4 nearly 60 years ago, returning through Nevada and Idaho. We had to run the heater most of the return leg to keep it from boiling out the coolant, but great fun.
Mr. Leno, I salute you! Your automobile videos are just right! Thank you for preserving so much automotive history, and for sharing it with us in this fashion. I wish you the best always.
Will you ever do the modern-ish morgan car? I know they aren't really all that popular or available but it would be cool to see on here!
i hope you enjoyed this as much as I did... wait you didnt get to drive ... hahahahah in your face.. tell us where we can test drive a Morgan super 8????
Wow!!..what a car!!..Nothing beats the old classic feel of early roadster design and modern performance..unbeatable combination ❤❤
So... it has a new/different engine, a different trans., different suspension, and I'm sure brakes, different gauges.... Why is this a Morgan? Mostly the same body? That's it. Morgans are not cheap. If you replace everything, I'll assume it is 2x the cost. Probably more. Fun car, sounds great; but I'm just gonna call this a Jason.
One glance and it's........ a....... Morgan !!!
Okay Jay, ya' got my curiosity going,,,, whats in the big orange boxes behind you? Not your usual background shot.
The Buick 215 was god awful. They fell apart constantly and GM practically gave the design away. The British then stuffed it into any and all vehicles. Land Rover did the right thing and dumped it for Jag’s new V8. Ironically, purists bitched because apparently horrid unreliability is a feature in their minds
The 215 is a good engine, but GM had trouble casting aluminum engines, 50+% casting failures. UK was used to casting aluminum WWII aircraft engines so knew how to do them... but unreliable Lucas electrics...
i must say i truly admire Jay's approach to his vehicles. Cars are meant to be driven why not drive them ? its far too common to see vehicles in their museum cages and collections just wasting away. don't get me wrong there's nothing wrong with caring for and preserving vehicles but to what end preserve something that would never be driven? thus why i like jays approach.
Jay-
Wonderful video.
Please note Jason had the good sense to wear the leather driving helmet. My Lotus Super 7 helped me understand their value!
Keep up the great work. Jack
Good to see a V8 with some proper carbs, instead of those horrible 4-barrels ;-) that undertray at the front is a bit ugly, though.
Great link! Very helpful & informative! Splendid to see Morgan is still keeping the spirit of this great British sports car alive! Many thanks, John
The main problem with this engine was that it was fairly unreliable in aluminium form, and Buick thought it too expensive to produce. Hence America generally got the heavy, slightly rubbish iron block version. The ally' block, with Rover's overhaul of just about every part, was a decent engine. Shame Buick didn't really exploit it as much as they could have. Still an annoying, rubbish, V8, but at least one that's light and small.
hello mister jay lenno
i have a question for you do you have any oldtimer eastern german cars something like a trabant ifa or a wartburg or barkas
i have a barkas framo v901 three cylinder two stroke and would like to know more people that have the same car as mine espacialy someone who have restored it
ps i like your show on youtube thanks for showing all your cars
greatings from the ntherlands
Sure, if the car's new to you.
People who drive standard are going to have no problem shifting at the same speed every time, to within a couple mph. If you have a little experience with the gearing and that particular motor, it's no big deal to guestimate.
And if you compare it against a reference, you should be able to use the tach to tell to an accuracy of FRACTIONS of a mile per hour.
Your problem is your moms automatic minivan. It would mess with my sense of speed too.
Hey Jay!
Morgan started with a frame lots of math and some dimensions based off of handling WITH the torsion, but every car applies a lot of it in the bends, and I can see some interesting ways of testing the 100 year old tech but only for one last meal. jk
Torsion just doesn't play as big a part in the original equation. What can you do?
It is pretty much everyone's dream to upgrade their current car's power, right? I'm lying, but, this guy replaces more than the chassis every year...
Cool!
