Christopher Nolan Reveals His 5 Favorite Films

- Christopher Nolan made his first feature, the 1998 arthouse neo-noir Following, on grainy, gritty 16mm. Now, nearly two decades and eleven movies later, he’s the sixth-highest-grossing director in the world! From science fiction to experimental documentary, the most-loved movies of the Dunkirk (and the rebooted Batman franchise, and Memento, and Inception, and need we go on?) director may seem fairly unrelated to one another at first glance, but one word could be used to describe them all: EPIC. Clearly, Nolan finds inspiration in very human stories set against vast and action-packed backdrops.
SPOILERS! They are: Transformers 1,2,3,4,5
Good taste, Nolan
Fuck you
@@parthibbiswas3730 it was joke. I'm Nolan fan but I'm not offended
A very misleading title. This is not a list of his "5 favorite films". This is just quotes from films that he said he admires.
He likes his own films better !
Even "The Spy Who Loved Me", he just said the Bond films, not a specific one
He expressed many times how Heat was a big influence to him. He even showed it to his cast so they get the feeling of what he is aiming to produce.
It's actually very clear when you watch his movies. Especially the similarity in the sound effect department. All top notch.
Nolan should direct a Bond film
Valobasha Megh I do hope he doesn't change it up too much. He also shouldn't have the same cast he tends to use in all of his movies....
Every director has frequent casting choices, give him some slack.
craig is okay.actually better than okay. don't change Bond :)
Gaming Addiction he's old
Oh fuck no.
James bond=the superhero for snobs
actually nolan's favorite bond movie is on her majesty's secret service..
That's what I've heard too
how, haven't seen it. So I'm curious as to how it infected Inception.
Perhaps you can satisfy your own curiosity by watching it?
Amy Daniel right. That makes sense.
Genta Tardiontoro true
You can definitely see the Malick and James Bond influence in Inception.
nevb you're a lowlife nobody. Bye.
Inception
Interstellar
Memento
The Prestige
The Dark Knight
...Oh wait these are actually my Top 5 favourite Films
Haven't watched a lot of movies lmao
My 15 favorite films
Interstellar
Arrival
Alien
Inception
District 9
Rocky
Forrest Gump
Lord of the Rings 3
Lord of the Rings 2
The Dark Knight
The Matrix
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
The Shawshank Redemption
Aliens
Lord of the Rings 1
Jordan Leach Gotta be kidding me, except for Memento those shouldn't even be in anyone Top 100.
TheNabOwnzz I don't agree with u…
TheNabOwnzz What? Lmao each one of these movies is found in the top 100 of critics websites tho. Why not our top 100?
No Adam Sandler movies??? BS list.
He prefers Madea
Yeah, where s Scary Movie too?
Punch drunk love would be respectable
Victory .Studios You aren't very clever, are you?
... right
2001: A Space Odyssey
Koyaanisqatsi
The Thin Red Line
The Spy Who Loved Me
Blade Runner
IAteFire funny that, except from the second on, that would be my list too. i would put goodfellows there.
Jorge Gomez you spelled one rong
squaink man goodfellas, you were wright. thanks.
Jorge Gomez Wright brother(s).
@TeodoricoGrande Oy Eh exactly
Fuck yeah for Blade Runner
Nor Norranun if you take off your nostalgia goggles then it might, Ridley Scott is still heavily involved in it.
NZN Ridley Scott has put out some shite recently
He's lost his way in the Alien franchise for sure, however the same cannot be said for Blade Runner because we don't know about that.
and also the Halo franchise recently
I thought the martian proved he still knows how to make an excellent film.
Correction: Nolan's favorite Bond film is On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
Supernerd how do you know?
He's spoken about it in interviews and has stated that it was influence on Inception (especially in the 3rd act). Look it up.
Supernerd Bullshit. His favourite bond film is Bourne Supremacy
ZenithOfJudith because there's so many
Well theyre really the two best and are almost comparable in terms of quality so it's hard to go wrong
Where is Micheal Mann's Heat?
in your ass
PiCheZvara lols
Dark knight owes alot to Heat
David Chan masterpiece
You forgot Heat . Dark Knight was not only heavily inspired by Heat but Chris Nolan also interviewed the cast and makers of Heat in an Oscar Roundtable as a fanboy of the film
My top five is
5-the Truman show
4-the shawshank redemption
3-Forrest gump
2-drive
1-apocalypse now.
Mine are the dark knight, inception, and then drive. At least we both share a love for drive
Nolan has gone on record several times that On Her Majesty's Secret Service is his favorite Bond film. Inception even plays homage to it with its snow fortress scenes.
His favorite movie is actually heat
You can tell when you see the dark knight
favourite doesn't correlate to 'best', if that film inspires something in him to create what he does then that's all that matters isn't it.
Think about what Heat does really well though. The sit down between DeNiro and Pacino, and the sound design are coming to mind. Those are both elements that pop up all over Nolan's films, but particularly Dark Knight.
That Melissa McCarthy movie?
Jonathan Morales No.
hell yeah blade runner and 2001 space oddessy
Where is "The room"?
Commander Shepard Tommy Wieseu: You're tearing me apart, Nolan!
Koyaanisqatsi is one of my all time favourite documentaries, Nice to see someone else (other than me) having 2001 and Blade Runner in their top 5..
i feel like a lot of people have 2001 and Blade Runner in their top 5s lol
Jay Shah I literally didn't find anyone :/
damn man that's awful. two legendary movies, should be on more people's top 5 or 10
+Jay Shah it definitely is in a lot of people top 5, he just doesn't know them haha
2001 is almost on every list
There's a certain bizarre eeriness to his style which I really love.
Here are my 5 Favourite Films
• The Thin Red Line
• The Princess Bride
• Spirited Away
• The Prestige
• Lost in Translation
It's the fans that I hate, not the band.
True with Nolan. He's a great director, but some of his cancerous baby fanboys are worse than anything.
Same with Star Wars ( and i LOVE the franschise ).
I get it man but at least those cancerous fanboys recognize brilliance when they see it & are often arguing against idiots who don't. You know.. the people who trash Nolan but then in the same breath say how great Wonder Woman was or something? I mean cmon who's worse in that scenario?
Pretty much every fanbase has those
The haters also can be cancerous btw... just saying ☺
Not as bad as Zack Snyder fans
Nolan could have added Samsara to his list.
I love Samsara.
I love how a quran channel is commenting on a nolan video
The Thin Red Line has gotta be the most underrated film of all time
I think he has said that he wants to direct a James Bond film, as well.
He should direct the next one. I heard Craig might come back.
I hope he makes a Bond film with Hardy. Nolan had mentioned that he wanted to bring something different to the franchise so why not a young and rugged Tom Hardy?
Mads D I hope he directs the next one, with Idris Elba as Bond.
He's too humble to mention his own masterpiece films. They're all legendary movies. One of the greatest director and producer of all time. Kudos to you sir!
I've heard Nolan say in an interview that his favorite Bond film is ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE.
My fav top 5 movies⬇⬇⬇
* Requiem for a dream
* Psycho
* Donnie Darko
* Into the wild
* 12 Angry men
Nolan has said the most influential film for him was the first Star Wars.
he said he directed legos with his brother because of star wars, but he always mentions a space odyssey and kubrick as a huge influence
I definitely love the first two. Wasn't a fan of _Blade Runner_ (but perhaps that's because it said that it was an action film on the back cover and I watched it with the wrong set of expectations). I definitely see how some of these have influenced him.
You can tell a man by his favourite film....
He didn't say that these are his top 5 movies.
He referenced some things he liked about them.
I understand one thing from this list....we need a Nolan bond trilogy...
Nice to see Bond on there! Would love Nolan to direct a Bond movie, but only if he's directing the first movie of a new Bond actor, he shouldn't do Bond 25 starring Daniel Craig, as rumours suggest
+Fandor - What is the Background Music.?
You can tell the inspiration of interstellar came from of course 2001 and the score of Koyaanisqasti. Hanz Zimmer even sampled some of Philip Glass's soundtrack
The music just makes it all the more epic
where is star wars, star wars made him wanna direct movies as I SAW IN INTERVIEW OF HIS UPCOMING FILM DUNKIRK
Just because it inspired him to make movies doesn't mean that it's in his top 5.
Adam u can say that about practically anything took u a lot to think of that response huh?
Shaun Poland Actually it took about 30 seconds. As someone that is trying to make my way into the filmmaking business, I can say that the two films that inspired me to want to make films are also Star Wars and Pulp Fiction. Neither are my favourite film however.
star wars is my favorite movie of all time but m8 u must not be very intelligent then cuz it takes me like no time at all to think of things to say
Shaun Poland That makes literally no sense.
Where's The Room? YOU ARE TEARING ME APART FANDOR
@Fandor - What is the Background Music.?
Interesting...many of his favorite movies are mine too.
His inspiration of making of movie is 1995 Michael Mann's HEAT movie
12 Angry Men is one of his fav. Actually I watched it after reading Nolan's comments
The Thin Red Line though
This song was bare bones but pretty good.
He's favourite movie is The Room
He sure as hell has a good movie taste.
"The thin red line" was truly a great World War II movie. Easily in my top 3 WW2 films ever. Watch it if you haven't fellas. Funny thing is it came out the same year as Saving Private Ryan but the latter got all the accolades
I think he also mentioned Star Wars a couple of times, but I don't remember which one in particular.
Where is The Room?
What's ironic is Dunkirk is very much like the Thin Red Line- a stand alone narrative -a meditative montage of sequence- cinematography with war as the backdrop not the story. Dunkirk was a physiological thriller placed in the events of Dunkirk as opposed to a documentary film.
Completely untrue.. He mentioned
-2001: A space odydsey
-Starwars - The Empire Strikes Back
As his two all time favorite movies
He also said he loved Denis Villenueve's Arrival. Great recognizes great.
My top 5:
1. 2001: A Space Odyssey
2. The Shawshank Redemption
3. The Empire Strikes Back
4. Star Wars
5. The Dark Knight
You share my favourite two movies in the same order as me.
Wow. Something that should have been a blog entry on Youtue. Such awesome. I love reading text on RUclips. That's what Youtue was invented for after all.
i cannot help it ... i had expected a more, well, sophisticated list.
Funny but not surprising how 2001 is on so many of the best directors top five lists
Star Wars: A New Hope (Original Edition) is also one of his favorite films.
I always could see him being into Blade Runner judging by his sci-fi movies. They feel slightly similar in some ways. If he ever directed a horror movie, I could see it being an Alien movie. Not so much like Aliens but like the first movie.
Nice PowerPoint presentation. I thought the clip from Koyaanisqatsi was a Galantis video at first!
My top 5:
1. Fight Club
2. Memento
3. Drive
4. Paris, Texas
5. Inception
At least Ridley Scott has the balls to say he loves Muriels Wedding...lol
Alot of people simply will never understand how great Heat is… :/
Thin Red Line should be in everyones top five, that goes for The Godfather also.
Daniel Plainview there will be blood should be on everyone's top 5
Totaly agree. Daniel Day Lewis is the best actor in the history.
Daniel Plainview wasn't a fan of The Thin Red Line, Although Loved Malick's Days of Heaven and The Tree of Life..
Daniel Plainview no because everyone is different.
+XFlo The Thin Red Line definitely runs in his family since his brother hired one actor from that movie for his tv show
So glad he enjoyed The Thin Red Line.
1- Einstein & Me
2- Full Stop
3- When the Nightingale Erupts
4- Drive Safe
5- Zarzots 2
YES! someone finally appreciating Thin Red Line for the masterpiece it is!
I wonder how a blade runner movie would be like if christopher Nolan directed it
Inception, TDK, Silence of the lambs
Can't wait for "Michael Bay Reveals His 5 Favorite Films"
Who else only recognized 2001 a space odyssey and Blade Runner from that list?
The ending of Blade Runner has a lot of similarities to endings of Nolans films.
The Thin Red Line had to have inspired Inception to some extent...
His latest film Tenet is the best film from 2020.
5. Aliens
4. Apocalypse Now
3. Heat
2. No country for old men
1. Pulp fiction.
Thin red line would be 6
If this tells me anything, it's that he really needs to direct a Bond movie. Perhaps Daniel Craig's sendoff movie?
what's the background music you used in this video? it sounds phantasmal to me
I know he also likes The Hitcher a lot
Excellent taste
powaqqatsi and Baraka are both excellent. Had the chance to see Baraka in the movie theatre and was blown away
Was expecting to see Ben Hur on this
The Thing, and They live are John carpenters masterpieces.
My top 5 fav films ever
1. Reservoir Dogs
2. Goodfellas
3. Glengarry Glen Ross
4. Aliens
5. Jaws
My top 5 greatest films ever
1. The Godfather
2. Amadeus
3. Network
4. Lawrence of Arabia
5. Sunset Boulevard
Bless you bro.
I love Blade Runner 2049 but I would have also loved to see what Christopher Nolan could have done with the sequel.
And TDK, Inception and Interstellar all make my 5 favourite movies
I love those films too.
Nolan needs to direct a Bond movie
anyone knows whats the name of the track playing in the background?
What was the background music called?
yes a Kubrick movie
I am 100% sure that Nolan said the original Star Wars is one of his favorite movies which also inpsired him to be a director.
he said he directed legos with his brother because of star wars but he always mentions a space odyssey and kubrick films as his favorites
Whats the name of the background track??
No Fast & Furious movie? Fuck this List...I demand an apology
I was hoping Angel Heart would be listed. He said in an interview that movie influenced Momento
2001 A Space Odyssey
JUST GREAT
The Only one I've seen was Space Odyssey. Time to get to work.
a better list is nolan's top 10 for the criterion collection
never heard of these movies.
bond?! i'd swear david lean is his mentor
The Thin Red Line is also one of my favourites! But also Captain Fantastic Viggo Mortensen! and Inglorious Bastards Quenten Tarantino!
