- Bring Him Home comparison with 7 Jean Valjean's. "Bring him peace.....bring him home"
1. Colm Wilkinson
2. John Owen-Jones
3. Robert Marien
4. Jeff Leyton
5.Hans Peter Janssens
6. Drew Sarich
7. Peter Karrie
jeff leyton is the best he came to our summer school for performing arts and sang for us :d was greatt apsolutly loved himm, such a nice person too soo cool.
John Owen-Jones. :) He was as amazing as ever at last night's performance.
Just to settle all arguments. This song was not in the original french score. When the show moved to london for the first time, the writers of the show heard a man named Colm Wilkinson, and absolutely HAD to give him one more song. And so, they wrote this song specifically for Colm. Bring Him Home is Colm Wilkinson's song.
I would have loved to see the longest running Valjean of all time in here, J. Mark McVey
He's not here, but Scott Davies sings this well. It's hard to find a recording of him doing it, though...
This is so beautiful, love all of them, but please take a look at Jonathan Williams, current understudy in London, think he his up there with the best! Yes UNDERSTUDY!
This song was written specifically for Colm. And i believe he is the only one who can do it justice.
Drew is SICKLY talented, but should not come near this part again for the next twenty years. His voice could not be more wrong for it.
JOJ is amazing live as are Marien and Leyton, but nothing compares to seeing Colm do this part that he created.
Colm Wilkinson will always be THE Jean-Valjean. but Drew Sarich is incredible! I saw him this summer. amazing.
and during the peter karrie version am i not the only one who heard the dude recording sniffle??? ;)
@ImJeanValjean It is actually, originally, when the show was rewritten for London a different song was written for "Valjean", and Bring Him Home was just some experiment by the composers, but when they heard Colm sing BHH they dropped the other and finished and inserted this song. Believe what oyu will but I am just quoting an actor who has been with Les Mis for a long time here.
My own (opinionated) rankings
Colm Wilkinson (The Original, and the guy who the song was written for)
Jeff Leyton
Peter Karrie
Robert Marion (might be in part because of the sound quality, but I winced in a few places)
Drew Sarich (sounds like a teenage pop idol...nice finish though)
Hans Peter Janssens
Jeff Owen-Jones (goes all-out WAY too soon, and just sounds awkward transistioning between full and chest-voice)
In my opinion, Colm is the best. No one can do it better than the original. (Plus this song was written specifically for Colm)
Jeff Leyton's rendition is the best technically, and it sounds like it fits the role.
i think wilkinson sang at a lower key in this one and janssens sounded great until he went flat at the end...
I like his voice, but it sounded too young for the character. However, he has a quality voice.
Where did you get all of these recordings of the Valjeans?
No I have not. As I said, my rankings are opinionated, and just based on how well it seems like they fit this one song.
From the sound of it, John Owen-Jones could well be magnificent in some of Valjean's other songs (particularly "What Have I Done"), but I didn't like how he fit into this one single song.
drew sarich ive seen him do javert and he has an amazing voice, AMAZING emotion but he just doesnt have the baritone needed for this role. hes amazing as the drunk tho ;)
No one can sing this like alfie boe! His voice his emotion is outstanding!
Sorry...I don't like the way Colm sings this. Has anyone heard Michael Crawford sing this? OMG...it brings tears to your eyes. I would have loved to seen him in this role. The very first time I saw this show in Washington, D.C., a fine actor named Mark McVey played the role of Valjean. He's a close second to MC - the feeling he put into the characters was utterly amazing. Everyone was in tears at the end.
Peter Karrie without a doubt...***** 5 stars (although the quality of the copy doesn't do him the full justice of his range, depth and richness....but thats just my personal taste...hee hee!)
Why is Colm Wilkinson, of all people, singing this song a half-step lower than everyone else?
Why is Colm in a lower key?!
Leyton sounds absolutely amazing. I'd love to see him live.
Only 2 Valjeans have managed to make me weep during this song. Colm, of course, and JOJ is the other. This isn't JOJs most convincing performance of this song. When he does it right, no one does it better.
This time the order is:
1. John
2. Hans
3. Peter
4. Jeff
5. Drew
6. Colm
7. Robert
Actually, Jason Danieley beats them all, but he's not on this montage.
Sorry to contradict you all, but my ranking is:
Colm Wilkinson
John Owen-Jones
Robert Marien
Jeff Leyton
Hans Peter Janssens
John Owen-Jones
Drew Sarich
Peter Karrie
there is more passion in CW's and RM's voice. They are equal. JOJ is very good (as all seven are), but not as good as these two. Unfortunately, the quality of their recordings are worse than JOJ recording. I would even give JL a better rating than JOJ.
Drew is awsome! He's the best!
I've seen a few of them - all great, but for me, Jeff Leyton wins hands down...
Maybe much better than the bootleg sound quality of this video (no offense PHANTOMfan08). If you google the phrase
bring him home singer
The first result is the youtube video of Colm's 10th anniversary performance of this song.
Colm and JOJ by far
hey try out olegg vynnyk great german performer of this song...
colm wilkinson brings so much emotion to his voice and the way he can belt those top notes is unbelievably touching. I also love Alfie Boe's version because he can also bring so much emotion to the song and can make the performance effortless to watch. But this song was written for Colm Wilkinson so thats why i think his version is by far the best in terms of Jean Valjeans.
JOJ
@theveryfirstpage yes colm is great and alfie has probably the best bring him home its at least equal to colms but alfie has less power. in other words his who am i ...left something to be desired
ALL these are fantastic performances.
That being said; I LOVE Colm's version. This song was written for him and he will always be nr. 1 IMHO.
A close 2nd will have to be JOJ - that man is just amazing!
A special mention goes to Michael Ball, who also sings this song beautifully.
(He played Valjean at Windsor Castle in 2004 and has both recorded this song and sung it in concert several times)
check david miller on that! he beats them all!
@Dehus To each his own. I'm simply stating that the version I have of Michael Crawford singing this is pure Heaven. I'm not talking about his role in Dance of the Vampires. I don't care for that music. Colm sings this like he has cotton in his mouth and can't quite get the words out. Sorry - no disrespect. I just don't like the way he sings this version you have recorded here.
@R20set i mean his who am i didnt have the same reverbarating volume and force that Colm had
Look it's John Owen jones lest stop messing around here. Hands none the best no contest. Yes Colm was the first but there will always be better singers that come along especially in a show that's been running for 30+ years
John Owen Jones any day of the week for me.
Colm Wilkinson. He is founder of the style of singing this song! He is Valjean!
Alfie Boe was amazing in the 25th Anniversary, he and Colm are my favorite...
marien was flat the ENTIRE time
X(
you need to repitch all these videos which have colm in them because they make him sound unbelievably shit because they are all too low so colm sounds like a a motorbike starting its engine (best thing i could think of)
I'm always crying when Crawford sings...how he raped the role of "Graf von Krolock" in Dance of the Vampires and how he ruined the whole music by changing the plot...and now give me many thumbs down as I am a Crawford-Hater^^
@mshayakawatakako Agreed!
Mr. Drew Sarich pwned this! I LOVE Drew's Valjean!
To mi the nummber one is Hans Peter Janssen becaus you are all forgetting that hi playde bohte valjean and javer and nobady has don that before and probibley never wil so hy is the best
+liskeable apparently they did it in Japan in the early 1990's
Is not thure becaus Hans Peter has bing giving à award for that he is the Only one who ever did it
actually Drew Sarich has played both
TheAznKid Tvo
The Original Japanese cast actors alternated between playing both Vlajean and Javert back in the late 1980's
TheAznKid Tvo no Hans peter Janssens did and he is thi only one and we Belginens ar very proud of it
JOJ!!!!
@recapdrake Less power? =D Rubbish
hes terrible have you ever heard him as the phantom? it sounds like hes choking
