That would be mine as well, they thought I was crazy for putting 2 in my backyard so when I let the dog out at night I did not have to turn on a much brighter light, and waste energy.
I wonder where they get off using the term “bionic”, which generally refers to artificial limb technology, and has nothing to do with spotlights, solar charging, charging etc. etc. They just wanted a neat sounding word tomattach to it, but it’s totally misapplied.
Bell & Howell does not exist and has not existed in a long time. It is a brand name that companies in China that make absolute junk pay to put that name on their junk. It is basically a copyright that some bank licenses out to far away companies. This is largely true of all of the good name manufacturers of yesteryear.
It hasn't for a long time. Once the business goes out, the name gets sold. It's a common practice with once popular top of the line names & it's easy money for the new owners since people still buy that name product. It sucks but it is what it is.
Tool brands have been that way for a long time. Most of them are made exactly in the same chinese factory but just have the Milwaukee, Bostitch, Makita, etc name on them. It's just a marketing tool.
@@JaneDoe-yz6by I have a Singer from BITD. Must be 80 years old. Works, well, like a sewing machine! This is the problem. Just bought one, here in SUNNY Florida. Just what I wanted, solar powered-motion detected lighting. As long as it works and is bright enough for your needs, doesn't matter if others are brighter or not. It was also the cheapest one at Lowes. Some others were $50-100 for similar lighting.
I had similar products. First product failed in the rain and I got free replacement product. Free replacement product failed in heavy snow. Both products failed within a year.
90% of America has COLD long winters. This is insane. A security product you can only use for 1/2 the year? I am guessing that the main reason is not actually the cold. The main reason is the crappy battery and even crappier solar panel. The roughly 8 or 9 hours of sun will just not fully charge such tiny batteries (it probably uses either very low mah AAA cells or 1/2AA (literally 1/2 of an AA battery length 3 of them for 3.6volts) But the big downer and why this is not worth 20 dollars is that it's not an LED light. The kind of LED it is using is not designed for ambient lighting (let alone spotlights). They are designed for indicators. The only way to get a decent amount of light from them is to overdrive them. The problem with that is they fade VERY fast when you overdrive them. It will be noticeably dimmer in a couple weeks to a month depending on how often it is actually on.

Yeah, Freakin' Reviews is very good at Seen on TV kind of stuff. If you are interested in comparisons between different tools, batteries, tape, plugs, motor oil and so on, you should check out Project Farm. :-)
Great review. Main drawback, as you mentioned, is basically it's only good at pointing to south direction area... that's why I prefer motion solar lights, where the solar panel is separate, so you can place that solar panel at a different location (eg, north, east, west facing) and angle it south at the sun...
It's most likely an IR detector for motion and the reflectivity of a car is allowing the beam to reflect back and turn it on outside of the 25' range. You can try wearing something reflective and see if it activates outside the 25' range.
I’ll probably never buy any of these products honestly, but I love watching these reviews. There’s something about his passion and dedication to unbiased reviews that I enjoy. I can’t really explain it.
Its got its pros and cons. A pro that I like is that you don’t have to mess with wiring it. A con is that it needs to be in an area where there is sunshine in order to charge it, so not all areas around the house and/or garage would work.
Then they should insulate the casing around the battery, not so tight it causes the battery to get hot during the summer months, but enough where it won't get too cold during the winter.
@@CommodoreFan64 There's a lot of things that "should" be done on a daily basis but it wont happen. Keeping the battery warm would make it need a much larger solar panel cus your going to need more than just insulation you have to keep it above 50F. Very possible but it would make the product cost way more, and because this built to a price point..... you get what pay as always.
No way one of those would be in these cheap things. They are likely using a Nickel-metal hydride battery, which you can recharge and is inexpensive to provide one cell for this application. The winter part is probably more likely due to body materials expanding and shrinking from the changing temperatures during winter. Which would allow water to come in and freeze inside
I’ve had 4 of them for about 5 months now. 3 in great sun locations, 1 in a shade area during the day. So far they work great, I had the sun bright, and I put this in the exact same location as it and it works better (last all night and the brightness is a different kind of bright). I use this to light up large areas, I don’t need much as I live in a relatively low light pollution area. I’ve already had multiple freezes this year with no issues on performance. The product is $20. And honestly, so far it’s been my best $20 buy.
I have one that I found at Marshall's for $15. I have it aimed to illuminate the front steps on our sidewalk. I am pleased with its performance. We would be more likely to use it during the winter months because the days are shorter and we would be more likely to come home in the dark.
Great review as always, but like you, I also have a problem with these devices not working in shady areas or cold temps. Why haven't any of these companies developed one with a removable solar panel that has an extension and a separate mount for those of us that want to light up areas that need it most? I have had one for over 3 years and its working just as good today as it did on the first day. Up 24x7x365. No problems with weather. Light coverage is OK, but not great.

Thanks James, great review as always!

Looking directly into a light (especially with a camera) is not the best way to evaluate it. Rather you should evaluate how well it lights up the area which you want lit. The Bionic Spotlight was aimed about straight out and the other one was aimed down at what appeared to be a 45 degree angle. Adjust both the the same angle and evaluate how well each one lights up your driveway. BTW, in your video, your driveway appeared to be well lit even with no lights on. Was that a bright moon night or is there a streetlight near your house?
I'm guessing the reason they state not to leave it out during the winter time is because the cold is hard on the batteries and can greatly shorten the lifespan of them. All these inexpensive solar lights are likely using cheap Nickel Metal Hydrate batteries and as it gets cold their capacity is going to be reduced. They basically don't want you to don't want you kill the batteries.
Hey, you mentioned that you were using a low-light lens or something to that effect? Just curious as to what camera &/or lens that you're using... because that looks like an absolutely awesome camera and I've been wanting to get one for night time
I know somebody that has a couple too and they work but I had this one out in the rain heavy rainstorm it works like crap I took it apart it was dry inside but now the lights don't blink unless you fully charge it with a spotlight but it dies pretty quick I'm afraid to put the other ones outside that I put I'm trying to find something better for more expensive so I can buy that and put this in that box and return that and try to get it $200 one for $19
I've never had any luck with solar lights. The batteries seem to only last one year. Plus as you mentioned once winter rolls in we have gray skys for 3-4 months.
I use 1 of these at the side of my house. It puts off enough light to not trip over something in the yard but not bright enough to help identify a burglar that might be hanging around. Ive had it on the home for 15 months now and it still works well. I'd say it's a great product but it's not Surefire bright. More of a utility light. I do not think it would last in Idaho weather. If you live in the south I think you'll like it.
I’ve noticed the refraction of light source from incandescent lights(infrared )from older cars can set off lights to interact w/sensors from a distance I have many solar sensor security lights & noticed new cars don’t set them off as much as older cars
Was thinking of getting a couple of these for the alley behind my church… we get tagged up a lot so looking for something to at least be a deterrent and light up the alley overall
I have a white miniature schnauzer and our backyard backs off onto a federally protected nature park that is home to a lot of coyotes, foxes, and raccoons. All of which will unfortunately make mince meat out of my wimpy pup. In the winter, it's already hard to see him, and before we let him out we have to shine a spotlight along our back fence to double check if there are any coyotes watching (more often than not, they are) so a constant spotlight shining along the fence line would be great. However, our backyard is also around 90 feet in length from our house, so this light had me excited but unfortunately lets me down on all fronts. The range, and the fact that it can't be used when it's hardest to see my dog (Eastern Canadian winter :P) renders this thing as useless. Maybe you could mount it inside by a window, and save money on your electric bill hahahaha
I have one of these. It worked nicely until one night, my wife woke up at 4:00 AM to a constant "flashing", like a commercial fire alarm. This light was flashing off and on constantly thru our window. Hasn't happened since, but I wish I knew why it happened.
I got one of those lights but I use the stake and have it placed facing the garage and porch. I think I’m going to change it up and place it on my garage. I only had mine outside for less then a month, and it’s still working and I live in Pennsylvania.
The reason they want you to take it down in the winter is that cold temperatures have a huge effect on battery performance. Couple that with the reduced sunlight in those months and it will perform so terribly that people will complain. The batteries shouldn't suffer any long term harm trom the cold, they'll just put out very little energy. I think it's a ruse to cover for poor winter performance.
Mine have been outside already this year in 20 degree weather it did just fine..also the single bionic light has about 6 hours of light time if it was left on all the time the double bionic just over 2 hours..both are 30 seconds after motion has stopped so its unlikely you'll run out the battery
i think there maybe some other tests to do like.. how far does it shine out.. the motion is 25 feet but spotlights are meant for more direct light like a flashlight unlike the sunblast that meant to shine the surrounding area... two other advantages that could be handy is that you can adjust the light angle AND the solar panel unlike many others where it is fixated with the light angle.. might be worth a shot for the back yard.. for that is a large size solar panel compared to others from the looks here
One possibility for the light turning on without being able to see anything that would do it. Could it be some kind of bug flying in front of it, or crawling across it?
If you want a motion detected light buy the Mr Beams MB360XT. It is battery operated so you can mount it anywhere and the 3 D cell batteries last for a year or more. It cost about $20 and is not affected by cold or heat. It is rated 4 star + on Amazon by over 3500 reviews.
Can you review the KarvingKing cutting board? It claims to be a cutting board that gets rid of all dripping problems when slicing meats, fruits, vegetables etc..
I bought this at menards for 20$ and it worked fine for around a month(very bright) but after winter it seemed to be dim & not as bright I have it where sun can hit it but still very dim
Probably not going to be much use here in the UK. On our dog walking circuit one of the houses has some solar lights to mark out the path. In the summer these are nice and bright after nightfall. In the winter I've noticed they're off by 10pm our time. Unless you live somewhere with all year round bright sunlight, they're probably not going to be an effective solution. More so in a country like the UK where the sky is grey most of the time.
I wonder if people are having a problem with it turning on seems by itself by motion by like trees you know that the shadow of them and see that this is a year old but I just got one of these lights and just checking everything out
Amazon has a ton of solar security light 2 packs for the same price with good reviews they are design more like the Sunblast but from pictures submitted on amazon they look pretty bright.
A bunch of brands are like this. RCA, Westinghouse, Sylvainia, Durabrand and even Magnavox which I believe was purchased by Phillps. When those companies go out of business their names come up for sale and get purchased by Chinese companies that basically put the name on cheap electronics.
There ARE some type of rechargeable batteries in that light that will eventually need to be replaced and I wanted to see you tear open the light to see what kind they used

It's garbage I bought four of them actually got them for nothing I bought one and put three in one box so I keep paid $19 and got three of them but it's garbage the only work if I keep them in the house on the couch and when I put the switch on it lights up put it outside it freaks out and dies garbage the best thing to do is buy one that cost $200 put it in this box and take the cheap one out and put it in the expensive one and bring that one back then you'll get a real light for $17 just like everything else I did that all the time with the Craftsman leaf blowers we buy a echo or Husqvarna Craftsman in the box and bring it back so you pay Craftsman money for an Echo price that's the way you got to do things to get anything worthwhile or else you're going to get screwed all the time
Looking directly into a light (especially with a camera) is not the best way to evaluate it.
I come here to see if anything is any good. The trusted man in reviews
Thank you so very much. I haven't seen any reviews on the 4patriots solar light
Very informative I'll look into Sunblast inventory. Good video
I have one of these and the sunblast one. Haven't picked a spot for them yet. I have one from Harbor Freight and two solar rope lights.
As always, in depth, detailed, and fun videos.
Hey, you mentioned that you were using a low-light lens or something to that effect? Just curious as to what camera &/or lens that you're using... because that looks like an absolutely awesome camera and I've been wanting to get one for night time
You dont really do teardowns but could you possibly do one for this?
My sunblasts are still going strong (all 7), great to have during the recent blackouts!
I know somebody that has a couple too and they work but I had this one out in the rain heavy rainstorm it works like crap I took it apart it was dry inside but now the lights don't blink unless you fully charge it with a spotlight but it dies pretty quick I'm afraid to put the other ones outside that I put I'm trying to find something better for more expensive so I can buy that and put this in that box and return that and try to get it $200 one for $19
Yeah well isn't the sunblast different from the Bell and Howell spotlight
I've never had any luck with solar lights. The batteries seem to only last one year. Plus as you mentioned once winter rolls in we have gray skys for 3-4 months.
I use 1 of these at the side of my house. It puts off enough light to not trip over something in the yard but not bright enough to help identify a burglar that might be hanging around. Ive had it on the home for 15 months now and it still works well. I'd say it's a great product but it's not Surefire bright. More of a utility light. I do not think it would last in Idaho weather. If you live in the south I think you'll like it.
Atomic Sunblast sounds like something from Fallout universe.
👱🏻♂️👍🏼
I’ve noticed the refraction of light source from incandescent lights(infrared )from older cars can set off lights to interact w/sensors from a distance I have many solar sensor security lights & noticed new cars don’t set them off as much as older cars
It needs to be adjusted downward?
I bought one for my back yard thanks for your review 👍
Was thinking of getting a couple of these for the alley behind my church… we get tagged up a lot so looking for something to at least be a deterrent and light up the alley overall
the pir sensor work by heat movement, the tail pipe gas is super hot which will be picked up far past the 25 feet
the questions is not which one is brighter when looking at the light. Which one provides better visibility on the ground?
Mine is over 3 yrs old and still going strong exposed to all kinds of weather...never took it down and was subjected to single temps.
Glad to see these solar products are getting at least somewhat decent. 10-15 years ago, most of these solar lights were absolute carbage.
So true.
Mine have been outside already this year in 20 degree weather it did just fine..also the single bionic light has about 6 hours of light time if it was left on all the time the double bionic just over 2 hours..both are 30 seconds after motion has stopped so its unlikely you'll run out the battery
i think there maybe some other tests to do like.. how far does it shine out.. the motion is 25 feet but spotlights are meant for more direct light like a flashlight unlike the sunblast that meant to shine the surrounding area... two other advantages that could be handy is that you can adjust the light angle AND the solar panel unlike many others where it is fixated with the light angle.. might be worth a shot for the back yard.. for that is a large size solar panel compared to others from the looks here
Thanks for the review, great job. So how did it hold up during the winter?
One possibility for the light turning on without being able to see anything that would do it. Could it be some kind of bug flying in front of it, or crawling across it?
If you want a motion detected light buy the Mr Beams MB360XT. It is battery operated so you can mount it anywhere and the 3 D cell batteries last for a year or more. It cost about $20 and is not affected by cold or heat. It is rated 4 star + on Amazon by over 3500 reviews.

*Proceeds to throw it away*
That's my favorite part of the videos!!!
😢 🎻 all the hard work to provide it fine to waste.
Can we get another wish video?
1:30
"fortunately thats pretty easy to remove"
...
still struggles to remove it 😂
It would be nice to know where the products you review are made.
DO YOU REALLY HAVE TO ASK?
@@sonnyjomo yup... could be made in Vietnam, India, China, Mexico, etc.
Can you turn the solar screen to right, left, or backwards?
Please reply
What happened to the Bailey and Q&A segments at the end of videos?
Can you review the KarvingKing cutting board? It claims to be a cutting board that gets rid of all dripping problems when slicing meats, fruits, vegetables etc..
also, very nice edit, love the transitions!!! good work!!!⚠️⚠️
Does the solar panel swivel or just go up and down.
I bought this at menards for 20$ and it worked fine for around a month(very bright) but after winter it seemed to be dim & not as bright I have it where sun can hit it but still very dim
What is a good solar light to buy that's not over $30?
Probably not going to be much use here in the UK. On our dog walking circuit one of the houses has some solar lights to mark out the path. In the summer these are nice and bright after nightfall. In the winter I've noticed they're off by 10pm our time. Unless you live somewhere with all year round bright sunlight, they're probably not going to be an effective solution. More so in a country like the UK where the sky is grey most of the time.
I have a question . Please. I connected that one and there is a red light always there. Is there a way to turn it off or not
I wonder if people are having a problem with it turning on seems by itself by motion by like trees you know that the shadow of them and see that this is a year old but I just got one of these lights and just checking everything out
Amazon has a ton of solar security light 2 packs for the same price with good reviews they are design more like the Sunblast but from pictures submitted on amazon they look pretty bright.
I have one that is not lighting up n it outside n not shiny at night...what would cause it not to... please reply back...Thank You
I have several of these in my dog run and driveway. For me these are great. Especially if I want to play with my dog after dark.
Oh I like the red light it would trick some people. But sunblast forsure
The deal breaker was Bell and Howell! I am 80 years old and remember when Bell and Howell meant quality. Now it means JUNK. Anyway IMHO.
That's true of basically ALL of the former American name brands, especially for electronics.
A bunch of brands are like this. RCA, Westinghouse, Sylvainia, Durabrand and even Magnavox which I believe was purchased by Phillps. When those companies go out of business their names come up for sale and get purchased by Chinese companies that basically put the name on cheap electronics.
So where do you buy the Deluxe Version other than Amazon?
There ARE some type of rechargeable batteries in that light that will eventually need to be replaced and I wanted to see you tear open the light to see what kind they used
