Columbia prof: NYPD presence has left students feeling less safe

- More than 2,000 protesters have been arrested on campuses across the country following the spread of pro-Palestinian and pro-ceasefire protests. Historically, American universities have been sites of major movements for social change, spanning from the anti-McCarthy demonstrations of the 50s to the more recent Black Lives Matter movement. Despite this legacy, education administrators past and present have struggled to find effective responses, oftentimes resorting to heavy-handed tactics. Professors Eddie Glaude Jr. of Princeton and Karen Attiah, a current lecturer at Columbia University, join Ali Velshi to discuss schools' latest handling of campus protests and the decision to deploy law enforcement.

Protesting for terrorists is not acceptable under any circumstances.
They’re not. They’re protesting against Israel. You don’t understand that?
Houthis said they could accept the protesters. Send them to Yemen.
You are in for a lot of disappointment.
Yes
Is that the only place you’re allowed to be against putting people in concentration camps?
All criminals feel less safe when police is around.
Let's remember that MLK was arrested.
@@thomasfplmthat was a different time, and a completely different “movement”
@@acowthatjumpedoverthemoon3038 , and?
The comment I answered said that criminals feel less safe around police.
But lots of movements that are generally considered correct nowadays broke laws and/or had people in them arrested.
Anti apartheid protests took Hamilton Hall and changed it's name to Mandela Hall.
Lot's of civil rights protesters broke laws that enforced segregation.
And I could also add that not only people who break the law feel less safe around police, you can take a look at all the cases of police violence against inocent people in other situations.
Search the cases of Erik Cantu and of Karen Garner to see if people might have other reasons to be afraid of the police.
@@thomasfplm Sorry these protesters will never be as cool as the REAL ones of old..
@@DarkMatterCurator, and?
Should they start being even more disruptive?
What would be the equivalent of a sit in from the civil rights time?
In comparison to the anti-apartheid protests, they already took the same building and gave it a new name.
Should they have also taken some hostages like that ones at that time?
Boycott Comcast they own this 💩
I can promise you Jewish and atheist students feel a lot safer....
I can promise you that you’re dead wrong. You think cops ask for your religious affiliation before they bash in your head?
The students continue to hold the same views, getting arrested won't make anyone accept Israel's Apartheid. I personally would like to hear what my opponents think.
This host is clearly pro-terrorist
Pro Hamas mob doesn't represent all students. Or even most students. Or even 10% of student body. Which is why hundreds of people arrested are outside agitators. This isn't a student movement, this is Qatar sponsored riot. With some students in it.@@calj2090

So NYPD is smart to refuse to let that happen to them by keeping a presence there
Breaking news: Snowflakes are melting due to police presence
😂😂😂
So the students being beaten up by cops for peacefully demonstrating are the snowflakes? But not those calling for police intervention because their views backing a foreign state are being verbally challenged? Makes a lot of sense
If someone shot at you and you complained, would that make you a snowflake?
The people who feel they’re in danger because some people are opposed to genocide and concentration camps are the snowflakes.
U.S. had our own military men in Vietnam Nam. Gaza and Israel are not U.S. servicemen and women. A huge difference. Protesters can go to their country of choice and fight or protest in the country. The United Nations is the appropriate referee.
Israel and Palestine isn't America's problem.
US should stop funding the genocide with taxpayer dollars
Ya'll are great at making a simple issue confusing. Focus on anything other than the students message.
Where were the police on J6! That was real violence and an attempted coup! The campuses have been full of love just like the summer of love. The trumpers are violent!
We saw from the videos that the police were involved with January 6 at the Capitol. So was the FBI. We saw videos of the police inviting protesters into the capital building and being engaged in social conversation to include fish bumps with them. The police were there and they were active participants. Thank you for asking.

If it's public property why should they be able to take over the area? Did you see what the protesters did to UCLA?
MSNBC will never show anything negative against the narrative.
Because they are members of the public? So its their property, and they are using it for a public purpose
It was the counter-protestors that were violent at UCLA. The question is why the police allowed the two groups to be close enough to each other for violence to erupt.
Its actually private property, the students have more right to be there than you

They have been at war off and on since 1948 over the Gaza Strip. Hamas attacked 1st. Both used starvation by cutting off supply routes. People doing bad things always feel less safe when the police show up. Just saying
Sure that's how people felt in Selma Bridge in and vietnam
But enforcing trespassing laws, removing illegal "encampment"s, and ensuring "public order" so that everyone remains safe is not "Police doing bad things". You know most cities require "permits" and notice of mass gatherings of most types, including peaceful protests? (or at least they do here when the Trumpers gather every other Friday / weekend at our busiest intersection to promote him (that area also does have the available "public" and power company space for such a thing). )
Or is that just how we now perceive police forces, after Uvalde and their failures to act as police should?

That's the point they are trying to make, Israel has destroyed Gaza completely, killed, 40,000. 95 percent civilians, killed the highest number of journalists in any conflict, mass graves, forced famine, total destruction of hospitals, abducted thousands, striped naked, held without trial.... I condemn Hamas as well, but the idea you have to pick a side is wrong, when both sides are equally deplorable.
The concept creep with feeling save is at the point of being too big for a Big and Tall men’s store.
It's quite bizarre how few people recognize that the police activity during these protests against genocide is what fascism looks like.

HIstorically, in every major student protest movement, from the protests for civil rights, the protests against the Vietnam War, the protests against apartheid in South Africa, the protests against the run up to the Iraq War, down to the present moment, the students protesters have proven to be on the right side of history, yet in each of these cases the opposition used the same playbook. For example, these student protesters are naive or they are privileges spoiled brats, or they are communists, or they are anti-American. You know, America, love it or leave it. Stunningly, after the murders at Kent State, national polls showed the majority of Americans supported the actions of the National Guard that day, just like they supported the infamous Hard-Hat riots against anti-war demonstrators in New York City. Now, apparently, objecting to genocide is equivalent to anti-Semitism, nevermind that many of the student protesters are Jews. Perhaps George Santayana was correct in his observation about "the confirmed inability of the human race to learn."
So we’ll said
