This was such a lovely video and to see the look on Mr Bucky's face at the end enjoying those yummy tea cookie's. It brought me to tears to think that they both are no longer with us but what a wonderful memory and legacy they have left with the world.
Hi Ms Phyllis! Oh my goodness I am so proud and pleased y'all enjoyed my Mamaw's tea cookie recipe!!!! Mercy gracious I just about had a heart attack when I was having my coffee this morning and strolling through RUclips and saw the title of your video about the Tea cookies. I must say - I was praying for the Lord to please let them turn out as good as they do for me! Especially since I've already been identified! LOL!!! I was going to tell you that that these cookies go real well with peaches- the store bought that are sliced and come in those glass jars. Also we decorate them at Christmas with icing. Just letting you know. I'm very happy you and Mr Bucky like them! Blessings to you both!
The BIG thanks needs to go to you, Patty, those were the best tea cakes I've ever eaten bar none. You should know Mr. Bucky liked them better than his Grandma Stokes' tea cakes. The really nice thing was how easy they came together, no rolling out on the counter and making a mess. Thanks again.
Patty Miles Hi Miss Patty! My 18yr old daughter is a culinary student and just watched Miss Phyllis's video for your tea cakes. She is excited to try these as a class project for school. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe.😍😍
Patty Miles My daughter loves to bake and she is excited to try these! My great grandmother didn't make these...at least I don't have a recipe. Thank you!!!
Patty Miles & Phyllis Stokes..... Patty, thanks for being so kind and sharing this recipe. So many of my mother's recipes are gone and thank you Phyllis for posting this.
Such a lovely lady with a gentleness about her. I was so sad knowing she has left us along with Mr. Bucky . Still, her videos and recipes remain for us to enjoy. RIP P. and B
Thank you so much Miss Patty Miles! Its very nice of you to share your old family recipe. It's wonderful to have such a special recipe. Thank you! And thanks for making them Phyllis
Oh what a blessing. Thanks for this recipe. My great grandmother made and kept Tea Cakes in a cabinet for my dad as a little boy as a treat. Times were really tough and they couldn't get lard but they did get what they called "commodity butter" from the government. Daddy died a year ago and I bet he and "Hampy" eat Tea Cakes together in heaven. Please keep sharing your lives and dogs and food with us, Phyllis and Mr. Bucky. I am overjoyed and inspired by your videos. They make my heart smile.
Than you for sharing this recipe and video with us. Mr. Bucky's opinion mattered, and now that y'all are on the other side with Momma stokes now, the bunch of you can all nod with approval at us here on earth, as we attempt to recreate your creations. RIP all.
Just found you and subscribed! You are so gentile and easy to listen to and follow. To a northern city guy like myself who has no ties with the south, you show a beauty and kindness that is not always portrayed up here. Bottom line, north/south/east or west, you are very relatable!
I was cruising the tube for tea cake cookie recipes, knowing that it was simple, and had very few ingredients involved seeing recipes with too many ingredients I knew they weren't right for me. I tried adding the word southern in front of it and there you were Mrs. Phyllis with Patty's recipe, and I knew that was it. The self-rising flour was it. Me and my mom made these and I can eat the whole bowl raw, I won't, but it sure brings back memories of the little chunky bites my mom would sneak me. Your Mom was a true treasure, thanks for keeping her recipes going. I've enjoyed many of them. Thanks Phyllis Stokes and Son!
Hi Ms Phyllis, I love making tea cakes as well, and yes the vanilla and my mother added nutmeg and so do I. I'm a 1965 child and I love baking from my mother memories and sharing with the elderly in my community and church and it's a joy to see their expression when they see tea cakes. I just love taking our elderly back to what they remembered. May God continue to bless you to keep sharing your cooking videos.
Thank you ms. Phyllis! You are so sweet & Your husband is a cheer upper too. :) GOD bless you both. I remember my grandma who i called mama made Tea Cakes when i was a little girl. Love my precious mama & Her Tea Cakes!
Thanks a million. Made the tea cookies tonight. They are so easy to make and they came out perfect. It was difficult to only eat two cookies. I put half the dough in the fridge for overnight. Will report if it is successful.
Phyllis, I just love to watch you bake and cook...you are one of the few channels that I am subscribed to. You know, as much as you bake and all...there is such a cheap way to make the best vanilla. Ever since I heard of it year ago, I have made my own ever since and saved lots of money in the process and had the best tasting vanilla anyway. Just buy a cheap bottle of vodka and order some good vanilla beans on-line (they are much cheaper than buying them in the supermarkets)...then I slit mine open just in several places or you could open it all the way...it won't matter as long as you open it part way at least.. Anyway, after you open them, then drop about 3 or 4 down into the vodka and leave it on your counter for about a month, so you don't forget to turn it upside down every now and then. In about 3 months, you will have the best and cheapest vanilla on the market...right in your own home. Don't bother buying expensive vodka...I get mine on the base and I just get the military brand, which is really cheap...I think about $6 a bottle...this is the cheapest way to make the very best real vanilla. Of course, until it's ready, you'll have to put up with the store prices, but at least you won't have to do that much longer and it will save you tons of money, if you bake often, which I know you do, for Mr. Bucky. God Bless you too, Phyllis and Mr. Bucky too
These are great Phyllis. What I did to make them more round is use the cookie scoop so I didn't have to use additional flour and also chilled the dough for 30 mins before forming into balls then took them immediately off the pan to cool. Mr Bucky is right, these are keepers! Thanks Phyllis and Patty!
I am enjoying your videos so much! I recently lost my mother. She and I cooked together often . I learned so much from her. I am the youngest of 5 children. You bring me back in the kitchen with her. Her cooking style was so much like yours. Thank you for bringing the "good ole" days back. She was from Pennsylvania and cooked a lot of PA Dutch food. Again keep the videos coming. Have a blessed day. :)
Tina Miller Aww. .. I feel the same way watching her cook. ..makes me think about my Mom & Grandma and their WONDERFUL recipes. I Love your videos Mrs. Phyllis! Greetings from Wyoming! 😃
Tina Miller hey im sorry to here about your mother but i look at death as another Angel got her wings and one sweet day you get your wings and that day will be a joyful time it will be i can't wait to get my wings one sweet day
My mother used to talk about her mother making tea cakes. She said that she never knew really how she made them and she really hated that she didn't get her recipe. Although, my grandmother didn't use recipes very much. She went mostly by how things tasted. She did say that her mom made them fairly often. I'm glad Mr. Bucky likes these and I have written down this recipe and I plan to try this just for my moms memory of grandmothers tea cakes! Thanks for the recipe. I'll let you know how mine turn out.
I brought out the flour, butter and baking soda and my son said mom you're a good cook. I hadn't even started making one of your recipes. Thank you so much. I watch your videos all the time and now I know how to make a rough? Don't know the spelling I feel like that is the base for me to learn to make other great recipes. Thank you for your videos
I recently found your channel this past week while I was home sick with bronchitis. I'm hooked! Thank you so much for sharing all these wonderful recipes! I just took the last of my tea cakes out of the oven. My mother is coming over for supper later and I'm going to surprise her with them. She had a family member who used to make them when she was growing up and she talks about them all the time. I'm hoping these are like what she remembers!
I first heard about tea cakes from the opening chapter of To Kill A Mockingbird and later heard other Southerners talking about them. Thank you for showing us this recipe. I'm going to give it a try.
Phyliss I hope you are still making your wonderful recipe’s in heaven. I miss your videos so very much. I will say your son is doing a great job continuing in your footsteps.
I love when Mr. Buckey makes an appearance. Thank you Phyllis for making the video and Patty for sharing the recipe. I've been a pastry chef for almost 20 years. I will never pass up a delicious pastry recipe lol. xoxo
I know this video was made 4 years ago, but what a blessing that we can still enjoy this precious ladies recipes. RIP Ms Phyllis. We miss you. Also a huge Thank you to Ms Patty Miles for sharing her Mawmaw's recipe.
These recipes are wonderful thank you and thanks to your Son for letting your memories go on Im sure he will be there in paradise with you very soon God bless your family!
Oh, wow, I love the stories that go along with your videos. I thought it was precious that Mr. Bucky loved the tea cakes so much!! Many Blessings to you and Mr. Bucky!!
I wrote the recipe down and will definitely give them a try if Mr. Bucky thinks they are better than his grandmother's they must be good.....LOL Enjoyed the visit
I was lying in bed and jumped up and went to my kitchen...I had to make these but I put crushed pecans and cocoa in mine and they are so good...thank you for this phyllis....I pray you are back on your feet soon...😃
I bake these tea cakes. They are the best I've ever had. Thanks Mr Bucky for wanting them and Patty for the receipt and most of all Miss Phyllis for putting it all together perfect
I'm from Ky and this has been in my family for generations. I'm 66 and remember my Mother taking these out of the oven of her wood cook stove. The whole house smelled wonderful..
Hi Phyllis & Mr. Bucky, thank you and Patty, for this, couldn't be easier recipe. Just taken mine out of the oven...yummy! You're right, this is a keeper!! I do enjoy your videos. Take care and keep'em coming.
Phyllis....your so funny! If a man grades a woman's cooking and says "his mama's was the best...but.." IT'S THE HIGHEST HONOR!!! Thanks for sharing. 🌹💙
I tried this recipe today. it was just as easy to mix and bake as illustrated in the video. They tasted delicious. 😋 Follow up. After refrigeration, my batter needed an extra 2 minutes cooking time. Same taste level.
I left the tea cakes dough in the fridge until tonight. So 24 hours later, I made the rest of the tea cakes. They came out perfect. This is one of the best and easiest and most perfect cookies I have ever made. What do you think of reducing the sugar a little bit, maybe half cup. Have you ever tried a dab of jam in center. Once again, thank you so much for sharing this gem with all of us.
Phyllis I have to chime in and say the longer the better watching you. You are amazing with all of your skills! Your energy amazes me and your plumbing and art skills even better. Sending big hugs to you and Mr Bucky. 😀
You are sorely missed, Miss Phyllis 😞✝️❤️...I make these now ALL the time, since Christmas 🎄...I have since made many modifications to this recipe....I use 2 1/2 c. AP Flour, 2 tsp. Baking powder, 1/2 tsp. Kosher Salt 🧂....I also use 3 eggs 🥚 at room temp, 2 Tlbs. Buttermilk, 1 Tlbs. Pure Vanilla, 1/2 tsp. Almond Extract, squirt of Lemon juice, don't forget 1/2 tsp. Nutmeg.... sorry...I won't use brown sugar in this ..I'll mix the 2 sugars together on many baking recipes...I also frost them with the old timey Crisco Buttercream 🧈😁...it's always a request 😉❤️ Thank You for sharing 💕 prayers 🙏 for family and friends 💞
This is the exact way my Moma use to make Teacakes when I was a child. She used Shawnee Chief flour to make hers. I can't find Shawnee Chief flour anymore, but I'm told that Shawnee's Best is the name it is now sold under. Anyway … her teacakes were always delicious and was her favorite cookie to make for us for after school snacks. And as always from a kids perspective, it was fun helping roll the cookies into balls to put on the cookie sheet. At Christmas time we did roll them out and cut them with cookie cutters to decorate. It was lots of fun and Ms. Phyllis's video brings back such good good memories!!
I just ordered 10 lbs of White Lilly self rising flour and 10 lbs of White Lilly all purpose flour. I've never used it but I very curious. I had to order online because no grocery store in my very rural area carries White Lilly flour. I'm in the Tex/New Mex desert. So I order a lot of things online! Including hard to find grocery items. But I do get what I want... Thank goodness! My aunt made old time tea cakes that my mother loved but no one seems to know her recipe. And probably their was no precise recipe but only done by guess work that she was good at. But your tea cakes look so much like what I was looking for and the age of the recipe could very well be what my aunt was taught to use. So thank you! And better than momma Stokes!! ❤️😊
Hi Phyllis really enjoy all your good cooking....I am a new grandmother who's grandchildren are at the age I want to make them cut out CHRISTMAS cookies....not been real happy with my offerings of yet...was wondering if you might be able to share a favorite of yours...thank you for all your time and hard work you give to us with the sharing of information and techniques so so are we appreciative of you and Mr. Bucky...continued blessings to you both....
Just found your channel, Miss Phyllis, and I can't stop watching. You and Mr. Bucky are both adorable, and what a delight to find such lovely Christian RUclipsrs. My great-grandmother's tea cakes required pink buttercream for company. XO
I was looking for a tea cake recipe today. When I saw that this one was one Ms. Phillis and Mr. Buckey loved, I knew it was the one I wanted to make. I’ll be making them tomorrow, I just can’t wait! I already use White Lily for my biscuits! YAY Thank you Tammy for sending Ms. Phillis your mamaw’s recipe. She and Ms. Buckey live one through their recipes! Merry Christmas to everyone and especially to Stephen Stocks in Dubai. God Bless you all.🙏🏻
Tea cakes are the best cookies! My mother made me some last week for my birthday instead of a cake! At 49 Mom still makes our favorite cake or cookies! She adds a little nutmeg! I call her everyday and tell her it's tea cake and coffee o'clock 😋
Granny was from Kentucky and when she passed I asked for her handwritten recipe book. The recipe she had for this is nearly identical except she added a “touch” of nutmeg. Makes one mean cookie! Thanks for the video.
Don't worry, Mr. Bucky. Your Grandma, rest her soul, would be so proud you have such a good Lady like Miss Phyllis to cook and care for you. Love to you both and God bless!
What makes the old fasioned tea cakes like Grandmother used to make is the use of lard. I know people do not like to use that but it is what was used in them then and what made them taste good and right then.
Yes Darci and the lard our grandparents used was lard rendered out of a hog they killed. That lard is so so smooth and makes the smoothest dough I've ever seen. I would love to have some homemade lard now to make biscuits with! My oh my!
Yes me as well. But I can promise anyone that true tea cakes will not turn out nor taste like the old-fashioned ones our Grandmother's or others made without using it.
Yes, or real butter. And my mom always used ice water to mix up the lard and flour to a stiff dough. Then rolled it out nice and thin and carefully placed it in the pie plate. The ice water keeps the dough from shrinking up so much when it's cooked. She did not pre- brown a crust where the filling had to be cooked, such as a pecan pie. However if the filling was cooked on top of the range until thick she would precook or prebrown the crust by pricking holes in it with a fork all around the sides and bottom and then filling it with dried beans to keep the crust from buckling. If the crust was getting overly brown just around the edges you can cover just the edges with tin foil to keep it from getting any browner.
I made the tea cakes and they are even better the next day!!! Delicious, thanks. My name is Genie and our phone is in my husbands name, that’s why it says Rick. Also I’m finding more of your cooking videos. I was fairly new to your channel and I’m sorry for commenting earlier about more cooking videos but honestly I enjoy all your videos. You are a wealth of information and knowledge and I look forward to seeing new videos as well as the older ones. Doing a great job and you are a joy to watch. You and Mr Bucky and of course the dogs too. I enjoy the 50’s recipes and all the others I’ve watched too. Just can’t say enough. And thank you for the information about how to find more cooking videos!!! Love the way you get right in there and use your hands and has especially helped me with working with flour etc., thanks!!!
Your search for the perfect tea cake reminds me of my quest for my mothers blueberry pie recipe. I drove my friends and family crazy for years. Ha! At last I found it In a Betty Crocker Cookbook. I understand wanting the perfect taste. I've enjoyed your trial and errors. Love your videos ...they are NOT too long.
Oh I remember the smell of these delicious cookies! My grandmother was from Sweden, she would make these exactly, except she used almond extract instead of vanilla. Now I've got to make some. 😄
I've been looking for my gramma's tea cake recipe for YEARS .. and nobody in the family ever wrote it down, idk why b/c they were absolutely the best cookie I've ever had, as a Kid I would be delighted when she'd make them .. I'm hoping this might be it!!!! I'll let you know soon, b/c I'm about to make them today for Thanksgiving!!!! I'll let you know!!!!
Hooray! The search for the Tea Cake recipe is over! I'm SO glad your viewer, Patty, was able to share her recipe with you. And they DO look wonderful! I can't wait to give these a go, myself! Thank you for posting this. Many blessing to you both!
OMG! I opened a You Tube account just so I could comment on this video. You sent me on such a journey down memory lane in my own quest to find a recipe my grandmother used for her tea cakes. I tried many recipes for over 20 years and lo and behold a little quilting club published a fund raiser cookbook with MY VERY GRANDMOTHER'S recipe submitted by my aunt (grandma's daughter). It is such a unique story, I have made the decision to start making my own You Tube videos about cooking, story telling, hints and tips. You are an inspiration. Now I just have to figure out how to use that camera. lol.
I'm making these I wish I could have had this recipe 28 years ago we didn't have a computer then and no real cell phone but my husband used to tell you I wish I could eat some of my mama's cakes but she's gone and none of the children and he's gone so I might make it back for Christmas and tell the girls that this is for your daddy he ain't here but he is here through us and our memories thank you Miss Phyllis for all the recipes you show us. I just love your Channel! 💕🎉👍🎄🎅☃❄❄❄❄❄
This beautiful couple are both on this video which is so nice. R.I.P . Miss Phyllis and Mr. Bucky.
😔
This was such a lovely video and to see the look on Mr Bucky's face at the end enjoying those yummy tea cookie's. It brought me to tears to think that they both are no longer with us but what a wonderful memory and legacy they have left with the world.

Once again, thank you so much for sharing this gem with all of us.
Thank you for sharing your lovely recipes. have a great day. much love and light
These are ingredients you usually have. Gotta make these. Thanks
I am going to make some right now Phyllis. Yous look so good. God bless you/ and thank you.
Thank you so much for this fabulous recipe......can't wait to try it :)
I wanted to surprise husband with a treat and knew Miss Phyllis would have a good recipe.
Nutmeg.... sorry...I won't use brown sugar in this ..I'll mix the 2 sugars together on many baking recipes...I also frost them with the old timey Crisco Buttercream 🧈😁...it's always a request 😉❤️
Thank You for sharing 💕 prayers 🙏 for family and friends 💞
Hi, Miss Phyllis: I just love watching your videos...you really should publish a cookbook! I promise it will be a winner!😀
Mr. Bucky agreed that Phyllis is one of the best cooks in RUclips.
Thank you both fir sharing.
What a sweet story.... thank you 🍪🍥
Happy first day of summer, thanks for sharing.

This cookie recipe looks yummy! I love the way you cook to please Mr. Bucky. You are a positive role model to me. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you phylis and patty!!! This looks so good!!!!! Mike
Just found your channel, Miss Phyllis, and I can't stop watching. You and Mr. Bucky are both adorable, and what a delight to find such lovely Christian RUclipsrs. My great-grandmother's tea cakes required pink buttercream for company. XO
I want to try this! Love learning recipes that has been passed on down from generations. Thank you for sharing!
I love all your videos. Please don't stop making them . Lots of hugs from Virginia
I was looking for a tea cake recipe today. When I saw that this one was one Ms. Phillis and Mr. Buckey loved, I knew it was the one I wanted to make. I’ll be making them tomorrow, I just can’t wait! I already use White Lily for my biscuits! YAY
Thank you Tammy for sending Ms.
I made these and its like eating heaven. They are so good! Thanks!
Mr Bucky was too funny, may he RIP. It's fun to look back at a video like this from 2 years ago. Old times are sometimes the best times.
Granny was from Kentucky and when she passed I asked for her handwritten recipe book. The recipe she had for this is nearly identical except she added a “touch” of nutmeg. Makes one mean cookie! Thanks for the video.
Your teacakes turned out better than Grandma Stokes's teacakes!!! What a great feat! A sweet compliment too!
Bless his sweet heart what a good man he was your missed Mr Bucky Rip🌷🙏🌼
Don't worry, Mr. Bucky. Your Grandma, rest her soul, would be so proud you have such a good Lady like Miss Phyllis to cook and care for you. Love to you both and God bless!
Hi, Miss Phyllis. I think my grandma made these, watching you roll them made me remember her doing it.
The Darci 13 Did they use lard for pie crust also?
Deborah J Ellenburg Thank you!
My great grandma made these, I will be making them soon, for my grandbabies. Thank so much for sharing.

Hi phyllis,I watch every meal you cook . you're awesome.wish I lived near you.
Oh I remember the smell of these delicious cookies! My grandmother was from Sweden, she would make these exactly, except she used almond extract instead of vanilla. Now I've got to make some. 😄
Thank you for this easy recipe
I've been looking for my gramma's tea cake recipe for YEARS .. and nobody in the family ever wrote it down, idk why b/c they were absolutely the best cookie I've ever had, as a Kid I would be delighted when she'd make them .. I'm hoping this might be it!!!!

I'm making these tea cakes today, My Grandmother made the best tea cake but I may have to ask her to forgive me too. Thank you Phyllis
I added a copy of this to my recipe box , they look so good . Thanks for sharing Love from Oregon 💜✝️
Love your videos Phyllis!!
My husbands grandmother used flour and a slight teaspoon baking powder. That made them puffyl .I watch you every day
