  • Yikkkkessss. I use ECO so much on my natural hair! What do you guys think about these ECO Styler Gel and mainstream gel ingredients? It's not just the black caster and flaxseed, coconut oil, and olive oil all of them are like this. Other gels i found with some of these ingredients are La Bella and Wetline Xtreme!

      Bri Hall it's super important to learn about what we put in and on our bodies. I have about 3 jars and do plan to use them up , but won't buy anymore. Plus with the PLETHORA of natural hair products out now, we're all bound to find something to love 💜 unlike back then. That sucks though, that you experienced that

      Bri Hall I wanna cry. ECO gel use to literally lay my edges and hair in ponytails like I was laying my burdens down by the riverside. I’m shocked! Some of the side effects (unexplained itchy skin, itchy scalp, I’ve even noticed my hairline thinning). This is heart breaking.

    Bri.....one of my subscribers sent me here. I too have been using these products since i went natural...I’m literally in tears rn because I’ve been in and out of the hospital, to so many doctors and been prescribed so many medications because of my severe migraines causing my arms and legs and everything to go numb etc...they can never give a good solution and i never thought it could be the main product i use in my hair. Thank you for this!

      I’m so sorry you had to experience this too, and I told my Mom that these migraines have been debilitating, and it’s crazy because our scalp is dermal exposure while our pore are the most open & vulnerable. I can’t wait to show you guys these new alternatives tbh, changing food made my energy high, but never changed the constant migraines. Let’s take control of our products 💪🏽

      Jessa Yup This is interesting that I am seeing this now because I was just starting my search again for black owned hair products, specifically mielle organics. What Bri said makes so much sense because I used to use gel ALL THE TIME, and I haven't been using it for a while now, just because I got an edger that was working for me. Anyway, I was looking my edges and now that I am looking back that was the time I was using the gel. So I had stopped using it, not because I thought anything was bad with it, but because I thought I was just manipulating my hair to much. Thanks Bri for the info!

    💄 PLEASE READ GUYS: the name of Amino-2-Methyl-1-Propanol is NOT Triethanolamine. It's Aminomethyl propanol which is a normal chemical buffer used for cosmetic products. It's true that Triethanolamine can cause all of those things but not Aminomethyl propanol that listed in the ingredients. Also, these chemicals are irritants and cause allergies to certain people NOT everyone. People can develop allergies with long term exposure but that is with ANYTHING. As for the sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, At the legal 0.5% concentration, the compound will break down into formaldehyde 0.04% of the time (1 in 2,500 applications). You would need to use a finished formula every day for 7 years before risk of reaction would be a concern. In YOUR case Bri, your batch probably had a higher concentration, which is a problem! But not for every batch!
    Guys please inform yourself when you see videos like these! There's a reason it's in TONS of product the risk is low enough where there shouldn't be 100s of thousands of problems! Love you Bri!

    If you feel like those ingredients in the gels have been bad for your health then I'm so sorry to hear. Nobody knows your body better than you so I can't argue that. BUT I'm not even gonna act like I'm gonna throw out my eco styler when I use all kinds of lotions and soaps with ingredients I can't pronounce, eat meat from potentially sick and antibiotic injected animals, and use other hair products with ingredients i don't know of. Just not realistic for me. I can't live life worried like that. Everything is killing us but my wash and go is gonna be poppin when I go 😭

      I feel you on this, I’ve really been into holistic living lately and it’s so much easier than I thought. Even got my friends involved, never had so much energy, motivation, and glow. The only thing I couldn’t get rid of was migraines theyd be brutal for a week & calm the next. After filming this, I realized it was only the weeks I used these. Now I use natural soaps & Shea butter to moisturize, you can sweeten it with essential oils & still be sha-poppin I promiseeee. Just told myself I was worth the time. Not perfect ever of course, but I’m less worried than I’ve ever been & so much happier 🙌🏽

    Hey, Bio major here. It really seems like sis in the video you got your info from just went and looked all the chemicals up on MSDS, (Material Safety Data Sheet), quoted that & and didn’t even look into what levels of these chemicals will actually cause adverse reactions in most people. Some people are just hypersensitive and react to products like this. Most of everything we use are eye & skin irritants, as well as carcinogens. Perfect example, some people like burnt hot dogs and burnt cheese, but when food is cooked at a higher temperature than necessary a carcinogen called acrylamide is formed due to the hyperthermic reaction. Also, coffee is carcinogenic due to caffeine, so henceforth caffeine is a carcinogen. Just saying.

    People can be so.... Bro didn't say "hey i want you all to throw your Eco gels away", she said it was cancelled for her. She also said do your own research. I don't believe she knew this video would blow up like this so i don't know why people are acting like she's trying to scare the masses. She has chosen to stop using it and it's her choice. If you desire to continue using the gel, no problem but don't come here and start acting like she's about to send in a swat team to snatch your gels. Also yes she has make up and stuff on but this is a journey. Everything starts one day and then continues like that little by little . Rome was not built in a day, and decisions like this aren't either. I don't get why anyone expects that she'll Change het ways overnight because, things just don't work like that. Life is a journey and she, just like anyone else is going throu one. She isn't perfect and never will be so don't expect her to be that. If people would just get over feeling attacked, they just might learn something interesting. There are some people here who have never even watched any of her videos but suddenly, they feel the need to start condemning and insulting her. If you have been a subscriber, you will no that this isn't the first time she has done something like this, and she has been looking into stuff like this for a while. Gel is just the first step for her. She is changing one step at a time just like everyone else.

    Eco styler gel is an UN-NATURAL product!🗣I really don’t know why people are shocked and so quick to stop using a gel that works for them. Eco styler never claimed to be a all natural organic product that’s “good” for your hair. People need to start READING ingredients before they buy products if they want to be so cautious. If that’s the case stop eating fast food and live a more natural organic life style. 🤷🏾‍♀️ #imSTILLusingEco 💋

    Eco is as much cancelled as Shea Moisture was this time last year. Let’s be real, this community is all talk, and no action. Next year around this very same time there will be the same amount of videos featuring a new Eco Styler Gel- one that is possibly filled with rainbows and unicorn tears, that will claim to promote rapid hair growth and length retention. We all know the routine- it’s honestly become a yearly ritual in this community.

    Honey, if you give up on ECO gels, are you also going to stop using that beautiful makeup you applied for this video that's also loaded with carcinogens?
    I'm sure not...
    Water is a chemical, but we drink it everyday. Water can also be deadly if you comsume way too much at a time. Moderation in use of anything either consume or applied to your body is the key to a healthy lifestyle.
    I agree if any product is causing irritation, then one should discard the product immediately.

      Si Robinson Eco Styler Gel is a natural hair product??? I know it's a gel that a lot of natural haired people use, but nothing about their branding says that it's a natural product at all. They put "eco" in the title but we all know that there are a ton of products that say "eco" that are anything BUT eco-friendly.

    • @SiRobinson
      @SiRobinson 6 лет назад +5

      Regardless of if it is a natural product or not it still does not excuse this company. They are knowingly allowing harmful chemicals to be incorporated into products that are sold and used world wide. It is not only men and women using this product but also children. So yes it may be friendly to our pockets but above all it is very harmful to our bodies.

    She talked about formaldehyde, which is used in labs to fix tissues. But formaldehyde is everywhere, in your make up, your washing up liquid, everywhere...I mean, you should be wary with these things, but if you start breaking down the composition of everything I can assure you that you wouldn't even be able to brush your teeth.

    • @NappyChronicles
      @NappyChronicles 6 лет назад +4

      twilightsagasuperfan and I worked in a lab... It's not used to "fix" tissues, it's used to preserve them... And is highly toxic... We had Warning "Death" signs on both sides of the lab where these tissues were being accessioned. If we accidently spilled that stuff on us we had to change and flush ASAP. Sad thing is that chemical is every where and is slowly but surely eating and poisoning us but from the looks of the comments, most feel like its beyond our control when WE control what we buy.

    • @Stressed_PhD_0831
      @Stressed_PhD_0831 6 лет назад +1

      NappyChronicles that's what I meant. I worked in a histology lab where we'd use formalin to fix the tissues before processing. Anyway, yh it's nasty. People should be more scare of it, really.

      the dose makes the poison!! In a lab situation where the chemical is at full concentration of course its going to be hella dangerous. In a situation where a preservative releases formaldehyde the amount of exposure is infintesimal at best. You breathe in more formaldehyde from second hand smoke or car exhaust every single day than what is in a tub of gel.

    After doing a little research in this chemical, it isn't only found in hair products, but in some skin products too such as make up, sunscreens, face washes, and different lotions so it doesn't "cake". Yes, it is toxic but it is not harmful in small doses. Depending on who you are and how your body reacts and each body is different so each body takes certain chemicals differently. I want to really thank her for the warnings! In my opinion I feel like everyone should come down to their own decision on whether to continue using the product or not. Personally, I will continue using it only because after reading up on how many other products it is mixed in with that I use and I haven't had any issues with it. But in the end it's up to you. 😊❤

      Amber beens I hear that but... one ingredient that all of the Eco gels (and a lot of other gels) contain is protein. Too much protein from any product can dry out natural hair, especially if your hair is low porosity. This is partly why I never add any gel to my hair without adding water first. And I pay attention to protein in products. I don't think it's bad in moderation but too much protein in any product can result in dry and breaking hair.

    It would be super hypocritical of me to cancel ECO Styler. Soooo many of the “healthy & organic” foods that people eat have these ingredients because they are legal & they don’t even have to disclose that. If you’re going to stop using this then I would stop using acrylic nails (sooo many chemicals I can’t even), gel nails, makeup, certain healthy foods & plenty of combined foods. Some of these things are way too convenient & work way too well to just immediately cancel. I will say that I’m so much happier that I am aware of the ingredients in these products.

    The “chemical” smell is called Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate. Upon further inspection, I found that most of the ingredients in Eco Styler Gel are natural compounds, however, this particular one is not. This is the chemical responsible for the strong chemical smell, eye irritation, and skin burning. It is not recommended for long time use because there are no studies that show the long term effects of using it.
    Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate is found in other products like face washes, hair shampoo, makeup, etc. So I would recommend that if you’re going to cut off Eco Styling Gel, start cutting off some other products that you use that contains this specific chemical...

      That is prolong exposure if the nails are on every 2 weeks and people are saying there are healthier nail colors to use but how many people are really requesting for that when they go to the nail salon. • @JoAnnaTheSoulStringerJohnson

    People have to be smart and think for themselves. Yes a lot of those ingredients can be harmful but we don't have the amounts of any of those ingredients, nor the formulation or how it was used in the product. Some chemicals have variations and while one part is extremely harmful, another part isn't. We don't know exactly what was used because we don't have the formula. People have successfully been using that gel for years without side effects or issues. That is not to say that some won't be or can't be sensitive to it. I've seen plenty of people respond the same way to natural ingredients in other products because people can and often are allergic and/or sensitive to non chemical things. I say all of this to say, while knowing this can be useful, do your own research and know why it's useful. Having the information doesn't automatically make a product good or bad. Knowing what you put in and on your body is never a bad thing but don't be like sheeple who automatically write off things because "THEY" said so. I'm not defending the gel or the brand. I just know how things like this can snowball without clarity. Just like the whole coconut and cetyl alcohol thing. SMH But this was quite informative nonetheless.

    • @JoAnnaTheSoulStringerJohnson
      @JoAnnaTheSoulStringerJohnson 6 лет назад +123

      Bri Hall I didn't disagree with you at all. I said I didn't doubt that some would be sensitive to the chemicals just like some can be sensitive to natural ingredients. I think it's great when people know what's going in and on their bodies. I thought I made my points quite clear. My issue will always be band wagoner's and those who will simply be effected by fear and not understanding. I stand by my comment and don't discredit you or the video at all. If you felt that way then you read to fast because that wasn't my intent. I feel like we use products for ages and swear by them and then low and behold one day, we find information and it's got to be a chemical reaction. I'm just not convinced that is the case for everyone. Again I think the information you presented is valuable and I thank you for that. This will definitely encourage those who don't examine labels to do so.

    • @deedeedan8681
      @deedeedan8681 6 лет назад +35

      Your comment is misplaced because Bri doesn't just claim that everyone should stop using the product for no good reason. There's no fear for bandwagoning here in a negative sense and therefore no reason to bring it up as a pivotal issue. It's also not surprising that someone will switch quickly from a product they used to swear by in this case because, as evident from multiple comments on this video, it's not obvious what the problem is until a bout of trial and error or new information being presented like Bri did. On top of that, being sensitive to natural products is different than being sensitive to a chemical product because it's damaging your hair/skin, a carcinogen, or toxic in some other way and therefore not safe for anyone's use regardless of allergy or simple sensitivity.

    • @JoAnnaTheSoulStringerJohnson
      @JoAnnaTheSoulStringerJohnson 6 лет назад +119

      Deedee Dan my comment isn't misplaced because I didn't say Bri said anything. I said people. I addressed people as in the people who would read my comment. I thanked Bri for the video at the end by calling it informative. Furthermore, it's a comment section. I'm entitled to do just that!!! Although I didn't disagree with her, it's immature to tell me how to comment when I'm not kissing up to someone or gloating over a video. We don't even always have to agree. Let people have their point of view and don't feel like you gotta correct their thoughts. It's 2018 and I've been on this planet long enough to stand confidently by my views. I didn't attack Bri at all! I'm subbed to her because I like her. You don't need to defend her theirs nothing to defend. And you mentioned there is a difference between having a sensitivity to natural products and a reaction to chemicals as if to say you can't compare the two. But you can. First of all, the information on those ingredients are not new. The information has always been available. There are articles readily available and several sites where you can look up these chemicals as the lady in the video did. Also, you can go even further to break those chemicals down to see at what levels they are safe, and at what levels they are not. You can go even further to see derivatives and know what terminology may be a cousin of a chemical but may not be as harsh and so on. So this information isn't new. Maybe new to you?! This is all I was saying in my initial comment. That people need to do their own research. Because just like chemicals, people can have deadly reactions to natural products. So in that sense they are no different if they can cost you your life. I'm not just throwing out what I think, I'm speaking on what I know. So don't be so quick to take offense. These chemicals are in a lot of things and not just this gel. So like I said from the beginning... This is great of Bri to bring this up because people need to be more aware of what they put in and on their bodies. Not just this gel but everything!!! So chill!

Everyone thinks they have "sensitive skin". No, I think we're just surrounded by all of these products (and foods) with terrible chemicals/substances in them. Anyway, I can't wait for your update. Hi Bri I completely feel you, I just discovered this a few weeks ago. My scalp was always on fire and my hair was always dry, but I hadn’t realized that EcoStyler, the one product line I’d be faithful to was the cause. Ditched it and won’t be looking back!

  • @SunshineIzDivine
    @SunshineIzDivine 6 лет назад +4

    I got a scalp infection this year, which resulted in lots of itching and scabbing. My hairstylist told me it was because I was using the gel in wet hair and putting it into a bun. I'm in grad school and buns are the best styles for me at the moment. So, I put my hair in braids and used a medicated shampoo for two months which made my issues go away. I recently started wearing buns and I started to get concerned about putting gel on the side of my head. I'm so glad I came across this video I just threw away my eco styler gel. I might switch back to kinky curly, it just that this gel expires quickly, but I realize now it was becaus it's natural.

    I do not know your background nor do I presume to, but I am a part of the research community and I educate my loved ones about the perils of only believing so-called "empirical evidence" and "empirical studies". Not only is some research wrong or biased (and I don't mean just the obviously biased) but research is very much a dollars game and it truly goes all the way up - to highly-ranked colleges and universities, Big Pharma, and politicians. Even the so-called non-partisan research institutes and labs need to be monitored. Pay attention to California's laws about notifications and warnings on certain products. Pay attention to Europe, as well. I'm no conspiracy theorist, but I'm not blind either.
    I barely use Eco-Styler but NONE of this surprises me. Long-term exposure may be required to feel adverse side effects from many products and activities. Keep in mind that because you do not see and/or feel anything, it does not mean that damage isn't being done on the molecular level. Who knows? Using the gels occasionally may not be harmful. I suggest following your own experience and deciding. It's hard to get people to turn away from something they love even if it's clearly not good for them. Heck, we even see this in relationships. I just say just don't be a fool and continue the ridiculous justifications. 🤷🏾

  • @GISELLEMARIED

    I’m all for not using a product if it’s irritating to you personally but I truly do not believe that a hair gel is going to give you cancer or make you depressed, etc, etc. Yes if your eyes are irritating or your hair is thinning than absolutely you should stop and look into what products you’re using but in all honestly this stuff is EVERYWHERE.
    Black owned business usually do not have access to the same resources that mainstream manufacturers do which is usually why their ingredient list is different because they have to find alternatives. Of course that can be a good thing but TBH some of these black owned products don’t work as well BECAUSE they’re missing these chemical ingredients.
    Bri, sis I see you with your full set on fleek every time. You don’t think sitting in that nail salon inhaling those fumes is messing with your body? Thanks for giving your opinion on it and sharing that girl’s video but idk her background and I’m assuming she did what most of us do and Google researched and then said everything in front of a camera.
    But like I said, if something is SEVERELY affecting you then yes cut it out but who knows you could cut out the gel and still be suffering whatever symptoms you are. Maybe it’s coming from the other chemicals that are in every other product we humans consume? 🤔🤷🏽‍♀️

    • @SmartistaBeauty
      @SmartistaBeauty  6 лет назад +18

      GISELLE MARIE I think the Internet has created this image of labeling a person and discrediting a journey during the journey. There’s this, “well if you want to get healthy you have to do it ALL at once mindset,” that I’m no longer with. If it means knocking off one thing at a time, I’m with that.
      There’s a book called the Compound Effect by Darren Hardy. We do not see the immediate results of our choices, they take years. Even changing ONE thing can change your life. I don’t think I should wait until something happens to change. Most importantly one step at a time, it starts here

    • @GISELLEMARIED
      @GISELLEMARIED 6 лет назад +15

      Bri Hall I understand and I agree with you that it’s probably not best for you to use the gel anymore because you are OBVIOUSLY sensitive to it. It may not have been extreme and only happened once but it happened, I would feel the same way.
      I just can’t get with the dramatics of the information people are outputting into the environment, I’m talking about everyone’s videos or articles about it. Because it’s so prominent in our culture; it’s in the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the air we breathe. So what are we going to do about those things as well? Humans have made the environment crap lol.
      I just need everything to be accurate for me personally. Ok these chemicals are obviously very harmful but what’s the dose inside of what I’m using and what’s this invisible amount of “over time”? What is all that underlying information? I would be very interested to see an actual case study on this lol.
      But to each their own honestly. It’s all a personal choice.

      (From your last makeup video) Your maybelline foundation (also contains an EDTA), concealer, your milani setting spray, and your beached eyeshadow palette to name a few contains phenoxyethanol, which has all the same things and more said about it. You put these things directly on your face, unlike the eco styler gel, which I'm going to assume you don't use as an addition to your makeup collection. My whole degree in chemistry tells me you have quite a few more things to cancel.

    Solution: SUPPORT BLACK BUSINESS!! Our own people who value our hair do make hair products with only natural ingredients but we always bypass them and pick up products made by people who don't know or understand our hair and this is the result, if this is ONLY in products that black people use, it's not far fetched to assume that want to see our demise! Let's not fill their pockets with more of our money so they can continue to destroy our bodies in the most sneaky way! SUPPORT BLACK BUSINESSES!

Please take the time to read those comments and reconsider your statements. SunSinger I get that, but this video is spreading false info and like Olivia said you should know that. I’m a bio major too and I know that the amounts of chemicals in these products will not cause these adverse effects. The msds she read from is for people working in lab settings who are directly exposed to the raw chemical. Plus, these himcals combined could change the whole makeup of molecules and reactions.

      You use water in those same titrations too. Dose makes the poison. We don't have to be stupid about science.

    this all makes sense, I use the pink eco styler gel and my poppin edges are disappearing and I have major breakage in the most random places. I only use a leave-in, grapeseed oil & eco gel, so it's not like there's a ton of different products that could be causing the change. This could also be the reason my hair sheds so much, even on a nutritious vegan diet and great hair care.

    Hi Bri Hall I saw your video title and wanted to know what the deal was. Its sad about Eco styler, but what I have been seeing for the past couple of years is Tetrasodium EDTA or EDTA in lotions, foods and all kinds of products that we use here in the US. If you look at soaps they have EDTA, look at your boxed rice or crackers or chips and they have EDTA. This chemical is unnecessary in our foods but has been added and no one is aware. I have been avoiding it and going back to eating healthy foods without the chemical junk.
    We should file a lawsuit for this crazy cancer chemical being put into our food source. Its just horrible how these people in power are trying to kill everyone off.

    See I knew I wasn't tripping with my hair when I use eco it would the hell out of my scalp causing it flake up, skin irritation, itchy, crunchy ugh that chemical makes me think it triggered my allergies cause I've never had them until I started going natural. Y'all do your research on the things you put in, on, or around you please 😭😭

    I just wanna know why it took a youtuber to tell y’all this like damn i thought in the natural community the rule was if you can’t pronounce the first three ingredients don’t put that shit in your hair. Yet NOW that a youtuber stopped using it its CANCELLED??? Oh ok

    The air we breathe is toxic the water we drink is toxic the pots and pans we cook in is toxic the body wash we use is toxic and that’s just to name a few. In my opinion you can’t eliminate one thing if you’re going to use another toxic item or eat toxic food. You have to be committed to this lifestyle which means giving up A LOT your favorite items that most likely are toxic. It is possible to do so by buying items with cleaner ingredients and there are A LOT out there, but you have to do your OWN research don’t just go off what someone says. The way that this Country is set up it’s all about the money they will sell us anything that they know will be harmful to our health and do you think they care nope, why because of the coins that’s going in there pockets. We need to stop being test dummies and start realizing what we are pointing inside of our bodies period. Yes it is an expensive lifestyle, but you want to know why? Because they want these items to be harder get. If everyone could afford better items that means no one will get ill and that means no money in big phramas pockets.

    At this point... I just need to go back to doing EVERYTHING Naptural85 taught us. She was the first to put us on game of using/creating our own products.. such as flaxseed gel.
