I think having the MC and FMC as japanese main characters and having Yosuke as the side character exploring his history would have been a better plot. Plus Ubi could create a DLC having Yosuke now as the main character. As an Asian, I had high hopes of having the first Asian main duo in the franchise in this game.
Play as the girl and stop crying because of skin color.😂😂😂
They trying to turn Japan into Paris 😂
I mean, people would still freak out and cry about Yasuke even if he was just an ncp as a side character...
Like, they freaked out over God of War: Ragnarök because one of the side characters looked Asian... Crying about how dei is "ruining" gaming etc.
So a black samurai, even as a side character, would still make their heads explode.
His being a MC was a best idea in my opinion
Even if he was a side character their would still be outrage from certain people,
Angerboda was a side character and barley appeared in God of war yet these people still complained,
And the thing I’m trying to understand is Why not keep him as the main character?
Did we have this energy when we played as a white guy in Nioh?
No we didn’t,
Personally I think this is fine my only problem is the praise and the micro transactions,
He looks cool as a optional brute like character.
Two big red flags with making Yasuke a main character.
1. We have never had a historical figure or "anyone from history" as a main character in any Assassins Creed games. They are always the side characters you interact with. The main characters are original characters to their stories.
2. The main characters have always been from their setting, region, and culture. They are from the area. And if there are two main characters they BOTH are, not just one.
They broke both traditions in one game and quite frankly it is a middle finger to Japan. If you wanted a historical figure why not pick someone actually Japanese........like Oda? And why in the world have one of the main characters not be from the region when we finally hit Japan? The game we have wanted for years.
Those are some good points. I didn’t know Assassin’s Creed has had that history for so long.
Well not really AC Rogue is set in America and the protagonist is Irish and revelations is set in turkey and we had ezio
1. And that is an issue how exactly?
2. Not true Ezio is Italian and revelations was in the ottoman empire.
Also one of the two protagonists is japanese, if you want to play a japanese character you can. What is the problem here? Yasuke is an interesting character and I'm sure you could tell an interesting story with him.
@mrlikerdh it is not that's what I'm saying it's been done before so I don't mind it
You’re not whining about white boy Willaim Adam’s fighting demons in Nioh
White man sailing the Caribbean in Black flag
Norwegian man running around England in Valhalla
But you get an actual character who existed but doesn’t look like you so now you wish for authenticity from assassins creed of all places. The game where you got into a fist fight with the pope for a magic base ball 😂😂😂😂
The gentrification of the word "woke" needs to be studied
@pyrocinical299 when was he a samurai?
where did you get that?
he was their slave, they kept him cuz they were fascinated by his color and he assisted them with their equipment
@pyrocinical299 yasuke stayed in japan for about a year and was given back to jesuit without ever participating in any war or battle as a samurai, ever. from real history records and journals written in real life from the era. not your modern pretend fantasies

I am half Japanese and grew up in Japan. 千葉県-松戸市. I’m not okay with this. I don’t care if Yasuke was a “samurai” or not. It feels like we Asians are erasable and don’t count as minorities in America. Having a Japanese main character wasn’t good enough so they made one African. If AC was in Africa would people be ok if one of the main characters was Chinese? I think it would be inexcusable. People talk about cultural appropriation but where are they now? They don’t care. Now if the developers were Japanese and made this decision, I’d be ok with it.
Have you played any ac before? Black flag was set in the Caribbean but the mc was welsh. Stop using identity politics no one cares about your race.
There are TWO main characters, one of which is Japanese.
nah bruh theres already assassins creed china with asian character, stop with the identity politics i dont give a fk
Have you considered that the recent rise in popularity for Yasuke helped motivate the decision? American blacks specifically have always had a lot of love for Eastern cultures and stories and because the East Asian minority is fairly small comparatively in the states, the developers wanted to mix it up a bit to grab a few more sales. Besides, with a little of the actual historical background, if Yasuke was a bodyguard for Nobunaga and massive, then he would have probably been kind of scary at the time.
Did you care so much when Tom Cruse was a Samurai? Or the other white guys over the decades
glad they didn’t give him the killmonger cut
They're technically half correct? Yasuke was a black men in Japan indeed. But calling him a samurai is far fetched, since he was servant and as far as we know didn't really fight.
He likely fought in Honno-ji and perhaps a couple others but yea nothing to this scale lol.
@@hdudhehdhd2222 I mean, I guess? I mean we don't know what happened with him after Honno-Ji and there is like 1 painting with him wrestling (assuming that's actually him).
lol bunch of dumb kids don’t realize that all samurai’s are servants 😂
Samurai when roughly translates to English means “to serve”. All samurai’s served their lords. In this case Yasuke served the most powerful man in Japan Oda Nobunaga
According to fellow Samurai Matsudaira Ietada’s diary, Yasuke was employed as samurai for Oda Nobunaga, received a stipend, armor/katana, land, and servants.
@@hdudhehdhd2222 It's a huge "maybe". And to be a warrior/samurai was literally non existent. Samurai knew wth they were doing. You couldn't just simply give a slave a katana and say "go slash others". So there is no chance a black man was a samurai. Not even the White man that arrived in japan became samurai and were much more powerfull then him. At least in money and status.
He was absolutely a samurai. Don't spread bs misinformation. A bunch of losers edited the wikipedia recently to push their agenda and narrative to say Yasuke wasn't a samurai when historian agree that was a well respected samurai.

I think it would still stand out if it wasn’t a black protagonist because it’s an Assassins Creed style game that we’ve been waiting for and they could’ve built off soooooo many Asian characters as a protagonist instead of the one they chose it’s a huge missed opportunity. Yasuke could’ve been DLC that would’ve made more sense.
Nothing against Yasuke, he probably was very cool and him getting immerse in Japanese culture is a cool bit of history. But to me at least, making a game about Japan under Nobunaga, having hundreds upon hundreds of Japanese historical figures that are much more established and relevant to the time and picking the one dude who's most relevant characteristic is him being black is quite the evident racial bias. Especially when you here people retort that "yeah but Yasuke was really cool, I mean look at him", to which in essence I definitely agree" but are you saying that a black man had to be picked because the Japanese were not cool enough to be their own Samurai? And it's not like this guy needed focus, he's already gotten tons of media attention!
I appreciate how reasonable you sound compared to other people on the matter, but hear me out. Have you considered that picking Yasuke could have been done specifically to get the outsider/foreigner point of view? Quick example; for Alan Wake 2, they specifically wanted two protagonists: Alan and a new detective, to have the point of view of an outsider, someone who's not familiar with the world, for players who weren't familiar with the first game. That way, you can do narrative exposition in a way that doesn't feel jarring. I can COMPLETELY see Yasuke being brought up by the teams for that specific reason. When you look at history and stumble upon this dude; African who ends up in Japan, first to appear in Japanese historical records, becomes close to Nobunaga... As a Retainer?! Bro. That's a gold mine. That's the PERFECT foreigner to fulfil the role of outsider. As a writer myself, if I was presented with the option of Yasuke, I'd be like "Shit, I know they're going to call us woke for that, but god damn, he's just the perfect fit for what we want to do". Of course, not every story needs an outsider perspective (AC 1, 2, Brotherhood, didn't have any), but when you have one, it's always really cool and immersive for the players (Case in point: Ezio going to Constantinople and learning about the culture). Even if they romanticize his story, Yasuke is a cool foundation for a story. And let's not act like this would be the first time AC romanticized a historical figure lol.
Not only that, but he also fits perfectly for the gameplay. We know they want to please both their audiences with that game: those who like the RPG hack and slash combat, and those who prefer stealth. And since Yasuke represents the Samurai, historically known for his size and strength, he's the perfect fit to be the brawler type! So on the other hand, you could have a Japanese Ninja, for the native side of the story, but also for the stealth part of the gameplay. So when you really take all of this into consideration, it's perfect. It feels super unique, not a single other game give us those two drastically different perspectives (native/foreigner) side by side and it allows the game to stand on its own, and not be overly compared to other games set in Feudal Japan.
So yeah, all of that to say that even though Yasuke does in fact fall in line with Ubisoft's usual desire for diversity, there are other very valid reasons beyond "wokeness" to pick him as a character. And having seen the making of AC games with my own eyes in the past, I can definitely tell you that forced diversity isn't a top down mandate - it's a desire shared by the teams, yes, but not an obsession. AC Valhalla was jam packed with white people and no one ever brought the point "Maybe Eivor should be black" or nothing remotely close to that. And let's not forget that Shadows does feature a Japanese protagonist as well. If Yasuke had been the ONLY character, then yeah, it would have been very weird, I agree.

Well this is a western game and series, it’s not Japanese lmao. No one internationally calls him that.
What I would really like to see is for western developers and producers to stop insisting that audiences need foreigners in Japan to guide the stories. If Shogun showed us anything, it's that people can not only handle having Japanese lead Japanese stories, but that people will enjoy them and even gravitate towards them. If western developers are going to continue to develop games like this and Ghosts of Tsushima, then give us Japanese led casts. It's as simple as that.
I don’t disagree with you on this. I could see Yasuke as a dlc or side character for this, but having him as a MC does distinguish the game from other recent games in Japan. If this game is good, the extra buzz from anti-woke folks could sell a few copies.

Yasuke wouldve made a little more sense if he became the assassin/ninja after Nobunaga was betrayed and killed by Mitsuhide. He could have avenged his former lord as historically he fell off the map. You could tie that in. Instead they started this bizarre black samurai fantasy nonsense.
Because he was actually a Samurai who was giant and said to have the strength of 10 men. A giant Samurai would have a tough time being a ninja. There is also some documentation that he fought with one of his fellow Samurai and avenged his friend Nobunaga.

Pretty sure yasuke was a vassal who pledged his loyalty to a lord but it doesn’t necessarily mean he was a samurai
Well he’s named in a manuscript written by one of Oda’s vassals as both a page and a “samurai”. With it being mentioned he already had the likeness of one via the armor he wore. So especially on the battlefield, he may as well have been a samurai.
he stayed in japan for about a year and was sold back to jesuits right after, you have to read about it from the man that owned yasuke himself, but it's not just the only problem of the game, it's also attacking the man honor of knighthood of the samurai, you don't assassinate people as a samurai, you don't use dirty tricks, dissimulate or kill people from behind. it attacks masculanity and the japanese woman is, to not be disrespectfull either but not truely japanese by japanese standard themselves, but she is a zainichi, wich means that assassin's creed gone from usually fighting against jesuit influence in the story, to totally embracing jesuit subversion and working for them as a total 180, but ask from japaneses what they also think of the rendition of towns , shinobis, that are filled with chinese furnitures and lamps... As for the black samurai, yes Yasuke was a historical figure. He was in Japan and was sold to Nobunaga, who made him a retainer. We don’t know whether he was a Samurai or not, the historical records aren’t clear on that. I do think that Ubisoft is using an outlier for the purposes of DEI, though.
If we look at the original AC, Altaïr was ethnically Arab, in AC II Ezio was a southern European in Italy. In AC3 Connor was half Native American. In Unity Arno was a Frenchman, in Syndicate the twins were English, Origins had African assassins, Odyssey had a Greek, Valhalla had a Norse, Mirage had an Arab, they’re all in keeping with the cultures and and times they’re set in, despite other inaccuracies, so why doesn’t the Japanese entry have a Japanese man as the main protagonist… it’s DEI. The AC franchise has been plummeting regarding anything in the way of historical faithfulness since Odyssey, in my opinion, and replacing the ethnic majority with an outlier is just the next step for Ubisoft.

What should have made it stand out from those games is that Ubisoft should have made this game 5-10 years ago. And released this game FIRST.
They had the obvious template and everyone was asking for it. But they waited too long and now they're playing a game of catchup. Now they're having to work too hard to stand out when they could have just.... done what the fans wanted ages ago.
To clarify.
I think Yasuke could be an interesting story, but like... my biggest concern is that he'll end up being just a western insert character or pandering character, rather than a man of either his own culture or the culture of the area he's from. Yasuke's story could be really interesting to tell, but the circumstances of this attempt to tell it... as what feels like a marketing driven decision... leads me to believe it will fall short on the NARRATIVE driven decisions.

I'm just disappointed I dont get to play as a Japanese guy in a Assassin's Creed game
I dont get why they did it cause the Assassin's Creed franchise has always been diverse they have been set in all kinds of countries and you get to play as all kinds of races
In Italy you played a Italian, in Egypt you played a Egyptian, In France you played a French, In Greece you played a Greek but then in Japan you cant play a Japanese dude
It gose against there pattern as well they usually have historical figures as side characters to work with the main character is usually a fictional character
And I'm disappointed in the lack of being accreat with history cus one of the things that always impressed me about the Assassin's Creed games is how they were accreat with the historical figures but worked the fictional protagonist in there with them
Like I didn't know Leonardo da Vinci was Biesexual until I played Assassin's Creed one of the games Implied he was experimenting with his sexuality so I looked it up in real life and there was suspicions he was Gay or Biesexual
But now you have people saying this was the first black Samurai and others saying if you look it up he wasn't actually a Samurai
We have already had black Assassin's in AC Freedom Cry and AC Liberation I would have been down with it if a different game set in Africa or somewhere else did another black Assassin but whatever theres nothing that can be done now at least the game itself sounds good they said the guy is brute force cus he has a big spikey club and the girl is stealthy im more of a stealth fan
I got bored
@pyrocinical299 same bro i dont get why people are getting so mad over yusuke being black, i even saw someone call him a Ordinary slave instead of a samurai. xD
@pyrocinical299 Funny you should say people dont know there history cus some say he wasn't a Samurai but to be honest it dosnt matter if he was a Samurai or not the game is set in Japan and out off all the Japanese people they could have chosen they chose the 1 black dude
In all the other games you play as people that are the same race as the natives of the country the game is set in but this game you play as a black guy in Japan they chose him pacifically for his skin colour and everyone knows it
Surely its wrong to change Japanese culture like it was wrong to change Egyptian culture with the black Cleopatra in Netflix documentary when she would have had olive skin and surly its racist to only pick a guy from history only for his skin colour
@pyrocinical299 yasuke stayed in japan for about a year and was given back to jesuit without ever participating in any war or battle as a samurai, ever. from real history records and journals written in real life from the era. not your modern pretend fantasies dude, stop copy pasting pure lies shnozeguard
@pyrocinical299 He wasn't even a samurai. Ubisoft simply just tried to find 1 black dude that existed in this time to justify trying to be "diverse" as usual. Diversity is cool but when it doesn't make sense for the story it falls apart.

Ubisoft collecting ESG points. No wonder japanese people are upset, especially when Yasuke was nothing but a glorified pet to Nobunaga.
Context: He was never a samurai. He was basically a pet of Oda Nobunaga who took him as a gift from Italian missionaries. Due to his color, size, and strength Oda would keep him around to cheer him up. There is even a painting showing Oda watching Yasuke wrestle other men for entertainment. He was given the title of Kosho which is basically a page (servant). When Oda was assassinated Yasuke was told to give up his sword by the killers to which he complied. He was then taken to Christian missionaries to heal. That was the last recording of Yasuke.

Assassin's Creed was never about historical accuracy, that's especially apparent to anyone that has played the very first game. The scientist explained that books are just a persons opinion about history and the truth is actually hidden and suppressed. Also looking at the sequel there's many things that takes the game right into sci-fi with alien gods, human god hybrids, mind controlling apple of Eden and other pieces of Eden, not to mention two secret world spanning factions that have shaped history for thousands of years. The games story is built on the primass of altered history so historical accuracy of anything in Assassin's Creed is laughable.
