I guess you had a great time in this beautiful country that is my Portugal 🙂 I'm glad. May be one day I visit yours on my next ship. One day we can cross somewhere on this small world 😂 smooth sea for you
Joe, thanks for the visual, the time and effort in making another interesting video of a place (and work environment) I will likely never experience. Peace and blessings from the Chicago Suburbs.
I'm laid up with back issues right now and binge watching your channel. Really enjoying it and it's making an otherwise crappy situation more positive. Thanks for posting these.
Portugal is near #1 on my list. With Germany France and Spain going down the $900 € a megawatt those countries will get to expensive fast. Joe you never said if you liked it...come on man. Love the intro. From grey to color, nice work.
I worked mostly on Oceanographic Ships and those were like being on a prison ship. 45 day trips with three to five days in. Put in for my relief at 5 months and he arrived 4 months later.
Portugal is known for its custard tarts. I highly recommend getting yourself a bunch!! They’re great and perfect any time of the day!! Love your videos! Makes me wish I was 15yrs younger. Watching from Alberta, Canada 🇨🇦
Yeah… and I want to add, browsing trough your video’s, I see you guys eating a lot of pizza on shore leave. Man, if you want to experience good sea food… You are in Portugal! and you eat pizza? Maybe the pizza thing is a running gig or maybe you guys just love pizza... 🤔 Never mind 😃, just an observation. I like your video’s, brings back a lot of memories, good and bad.
Looks like your guides showed you an excellent time. ⚓ Another awesome vid. 🇺🇸 I'm not gonna lie...I get a little misty eyed watching some of these videos. I sure do miss it. Stay safe ⚓
I’ll not be travelling to these places, so I really enjoy seeing these sights. The castle was spectacular. I love old architecture, but as you say, the view was amazing. Thank you so much for sharing Joe
The job I should have joit when I was 20........ Paths of life....Long traveling and venturing along many countries was anyhow fated for me BUT without the money I could have earn in sailing. Paths of life. Certainly I do not complain, there's no better school than travelling. Good luck Joe and try to spare more time in exploring interesting lands than to save money, the true wealth is stored within. A good combination is ideal, you can program it.
Hey Joe, well, I haven't seen all of your videos, but I saw the Piney Point trainee video, your first ship, Maersk ships, Bulk carriers and a tanker. I have to say you are doing a great job catching it all.....I went through PP in 1980 and am still out here on the Maersk Iowa, probably going to retire next year. It has been a great career, really, and while there are a lot of complainers, for those of us who like the lifestyle and thrive on it there is no better option. I will say that with the drug tests, the SIU physicals, endless paperwork, etc., it has gotten a lot more tedious in these recent years especially for us old-timers who remember the years when restrictions and bureaucratic boondoggle didn't take up so much of our time. I appreciate your great videos... I only had a Kodak in my earlier years for some snapshots, and I never got into the VHS cameras like a few guys did...but you have taken advantage of the latest in documentarian equipment to finally capture the day to day existence of the modern seafarer. Now , at last, I can tell people who question me all the time about "the life" to just go google some Joe Franta videos and you can see what it is all about!! Great work...I am about to cross over 8500 days actual seatime with the SIU, so I look forward to watching your videos of your next 8000 days in the comfort of wherever I wind up in retirement!! Thanks , I will be watching!!
Hi Joe, you know what I listen for and to while I'm getting ready in the morning and your video is going? How easily you talk. No bumps in the road, no lazy speech, just one sentence rolling on after another, and one follows the other, telling a story or making us smarter with information about this mariner life. I do listen for two reasons: it's rare that people speak as accurately yet smoothly as you, and two, it's a professional fault since I teach English abroad. Used to work on cruise ships and we looked forward to frequent ports of call, too. Dry docks were drudgery. The ship was taken over by workers, everything covered up. with paper, plastic and dust. No fun at all. We couldn't wait to put her to sea in her normal condition.
Been following you for the past few months and truly enjoying every bit of content, including the RV channel! Keep it up my friend. Safe Travels always!
you are awesome! your opening narrative was briLLiant, & when you brought the color into the video the way you did it gave me goosebumps &some tears... i am SO grateFuLL you got some time off the dock & what a fantastic idea to return to philip's castle for a night time view! i'm living for your monday ship vLog'z & anxiously await your new pizza & brewery line of content! keep up the terrific work. thankYou & uGottaNun onYouRside!
You are up there with bald and bankrupt. Not sure if you have watched his stuff. But your channel is my new rabbit hole. Keep up the good work brother. Glad I stumbled across your channel.
Hi Joe, been following your travels as an ex mariner but I still travel and attend on vessels as a surveyor. Setubal is a great little place, been in the shipyard a few times Some food bars and eateries. Stay safe and keep the faith, mate.
The intro to this video was amazingly well done. I somehow didn't even notice the greyscale, until the mood of your story shifted and the beautiful colours of the sunrise faded in with the edit
I'm really surprised there were no requirements for confined space equipment and constant air monitoring when you entered the ballast tanks for maintenance.
Peace be with you and safe journeys for you and all of your crew. And it is okay to HAVE A GOOD TIME. Thank you for sharing your experiences and what these places really look like. Pizza is good. Bowling, playing pool, or whatever, and maybe a few drinks. Keep making cool videos like you have been doing. You have become one of my favorites here on RUclips.
Very funny to see this video as I myself as a cadet also went to Setubal just one and half a month ago. I also went to the fort and saw my ship in the distance.
Im a 17 getting ready to apply to the siu apprenticeship program when I turn 18, this series is very fun to watch and see what lies ahead keep it up🙏🏾🔥🔥
If possible , try and keep away from container ships. Bulk carriers are less stress. I sailed for 42 years, mostly container, now retired 19 years. . If only i had known. Peace.
Castelo de Sao Filipe was not built in 1590. The construction started in 1590 and was finished 10 years later...in 1600. This is not too bad... Notre Dame de Paris baselica was completed in 100 years.
Hey Joe, great video! I have yet to embark on my first ship, but will do soon. Almost everything I read and hear about port-stays for container-ships is that they only last some few hours. Is it rare for you to be in port for as long as you did this time, or has it something to do with your specific ship/shipping company? Thanks for the great content. It is very dear and important to me!
This looks as though it would be a great side benefit, of sorts, of being a world-travelling merchant marine professional sailor. Is this sort of opportunity a common aspect of the job? Do you ever get something like 2- or 3-day 'passes' while in port so crew members can go exploring/travelling just a bit more extensively?
I feel sorry for every sailor today, you should have been in ports of Portugal like Lisbon in the 60s-80s when all Seafahrers were the kings of the nigths. I was one of the lucky one , thanks God i was born early enough to enjoy those years .The best times ever.
Thanks for the mini vacation lol. I was wondering if you speak another language? How do you navigate a foreign country if you don’t? Do you have exchange currency before you go? Looked like a lot of fun. Glad you get to leave the ship again😀
Ha, No brother. I do not speak another language. Google Translate helps a lot! I'll usually find a location on a map and show the cab driver (if they dont have uber) exchanging money is easy. Its finding a good exchange rate that's tricky. But i also just use a credit card in most places. Thanks for watching man
A sailor is always an outsider and the time at home is never enough and always goes by faster than expected.
I guess you had a great time in this beautiful country that is my Portugal 🙂 I'm glad. May be one day I visit yours on my next ship. One day we can cross somewhere on this small world 😂 smooth sea for you
Interesting layover. Thanks for sharing these scenes of Portugal.
Hey Joe. Really love the content you put out. These vlogs are phenomenal!
Glad you like them!
Joe, thanks for the visual, the time and effort in making another interesting video of a place (and work environment) I will likely never experience. Peace and blessings from the Chicago Suburbs.
I been fishing for 25 years in the U.S , glad you went to Portugal, I’m from there it’s my birthplace Lisbon , hope you enjoy it.
Amo Portugal! Great work Joe. That statue at 2:32 thought --- damn creepy!
This has become one of my top five channels. Excellent content and presentation. Living vicariously here with someone 'livin' da life!' Cheers!
I'm laid up with back issues right now and binge watching your channel. Really enjoying it and it's making an otherwise crappy situation more positive. Thanks for posting these.
back issues binge watching gang. my L4-5 jelly needs to be put back inside the jelly donut
Portugal is near #1 on my list. With Germany France and Spain going down the $900 € a megawatt those countries will get to expensive fast. Joe you never said if you liked it...come on man. Love the intro. From grey to color, nice work.
Yo Joe, I love seeing when you and the crew get to go ashore and see the sights!
That food looked amazing. If I could do it all over again, I’d become a sailor. Love the vlog!
I worked mostly on Oceanographic Ships and those were like being on a prison ship. 45 day trips with three to five days in. Put in for my relief at 5 months and he arrived 4 months later.

I’m so glad I found this channel. Always watching from Panama City Florida, USA. 🇺🇸
Great vlog as always! Portugal is on the list. Keep up the good work. Be safe!
I’ll not be travelling to these places, so I really enjoy seeing these sights. The castle was spectacular. I love old architecture, but as you say, the view was amazing. Thank you so much for sharing Joe
Love the new format. Keep making great content. A life most of us will never get experience first hand.
Your videos have quickly worked their way into the very select list that I will put my work on hold for, just to watch the video.
The job I should have joit when I was 20........

Beautiful place.
Yes it was!
Loving the videos and especially this newest "series." Man, I wish I could do this......
Enjoyed this, looking forward to the next one!

Today there are so many requirements just to start as a seaman. When I first started,, 1961 as galley boy/mess boy, all I needed was my passport.

My city😍
Perfect video as always. You mentioned that you had the best beer in Portugal, so I'm curious where you had the best beer ever😎?

I had to watch the color fade in a couple times. Money!
Thank you for the video. I always look forward to them and you do a great job.
Hi Joe! Great video work, and great storytelling! Thanks again for bringing us along on your journey.
You are up there with bald and bankrupt. Not sure if you have watched his stuff. But your channel is my new rabbit hole. Keep up the good work brother. Glad I stumbled across your channel.
I find your videos interesting and informative and your music choices and your narration very relaxing. I'm a fan, thank you

Setúbal my city 💚
Joe, I found your channel by accident. Very nice! And it is very cool, that you were sailing on a ship with our grabs (ORTS) on board 🙂
The intro to this video was amazingly well done. I somehow didn't even notice the greyscale, until the mood of your story shifted and the beautiful colours of the sunrise faded in with the edit
Really excellent job on the video and the voice over - thanks.
I respect the hell out of sailors… if I ever get fired from my current job I’m def going to start a new life on the seas
Thanks Joe!
I'm really surprised there were no requirements for confined space equipment and constant air monitoring when you entered the ballast tanks for maintenance.
The weekly vids are great mate. Keep up the good work. 👏👏👏

Nice touch going from b&w to color as you talk about opening up.
At least you know you a lucky dawg!
Ahh I love Portugal. I like to get there 3-5 times a year from USA 😂😂 ✊✊🔥🔥🔥🔥
Love the videos, great work man!
Awesome views 😊👍
The SIU gave me the boot in 2015. So glad I didn’t have to deal the COVID as a Mariner.

Thank you so much Dean!
Very funny to see this video as I myself as a cadet also went to Setubal just one and half a month ago. I also went to the fort and saw my ship in the distance.
I love your videos and this one was very enjoyable.
Good job Joe!
Thanks!
Nice transition from B&W to color. It's great to be able to watch people doing what they love. So, question: Do they call you Jersey Joe?

Love it, but too short, come on Joe.
That pizza looks amazing!
Excellent video !!
Thank you for the fabulous video. Peace
When you say nobody was allowed onboard during the pandemic, I assume the exception was pilots and customs officials.
Correct. There were various protocols for the times we needed pilots on board etc.

I feel the pizza struggle. the further you get from Jersey the worse the pizza.
Loved this video

Fourth comment. Here to say it was a good watch
Hey sailor don't you quit sailing the seas yea it gets rough... Steady as she goes🤟🇺🇸✌️
Love your quick camera work; makes it seem like you're a desperate sailor ready to get off the ship.

No problem. I love it.
Loved your video. Btw it is pronounced STEW-bul 🙂
Are those the same seagulls from NJ? lol just kidding.
Need to get a better camera. Footage looks like from 1999.
I joined the US Navy because they promised I would see
the world. In the end, I did see the world, BUT, it was thru
the bottom of a beer glass.
!
There's nothing like a Jersy pizza.
Correct!
What a life. Jealous. If only to be young again.
You need to pull into a port that has prostitutes. Like Amsterdam.
So, no prostitutes in Portugal ?? 🤣😂😅
