- Take a ride on my personal bus. This video was taken in Feb 2008 around the San Luis Obispo, CA area. I'm driving the bus and a friend is in the back recording. Your riding a 35'+ 102" 1972 Flxible New Look #361 from Tri-Met in Portland, OR. It has a DD 8V71+Allison VS2 3 speed transmission. This is one of two that were saved. I am fully restoring this bus and almost done. Enjoy
Another beast powered with the 8V71 engine. Awesome!
Detroit Diesel: The best way to convert Fuel into Noise :D
I sure miss these Buses. They was some of the best built Buses ever!!
Love it! I own a 1983 GM Fishbowl, t8h-5308A. It's my toy.
MARTA (in Atlanta) ordered these DD8V71 buses as their inaugural bus order in 1972. I loved riding these! Going into overdrive is always the best on these buses., and braking too. There was always the great growl during breaking at high speeds. Thanks for posting!
From 1992 to early '97, Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort in Bend, OR had an ex Tri-Met 1972 40 foot 102 Flx with a DD8V71A engine and 3 speed Allison auto transmission as well as a non-working AC unit that they used as a shuttle bus between their Sunrise and West Village (Main) Lodges, When I wasn't skiing, I rode that bus quite often and enjoyed lounging on the rear bench seat where I could feel the power of that mighty 8V71, It was REALLY soothing to me!!!
cool I love public transit.
when I moved to Calgary I fell in love with the Light Rail Tansit.
i returned to Calgary after being born there in 67 in 93 and loved catching the LRT it was never that full even in rush hour in that year..but now can you say sardine can for real...I left Calgary cause of the economy...I was so sad
This video is amazing.
OMFG!!! This bus sounds MAGNIFICANT, SPECTACULUS, INCREDIBLE, and a bunch of other big words I can't think of right now....DAMN this bus sounds perfect. I thought I'd never hear that again when PenTran (what used to run in Hampton, VA) got rid of theirs. This brings back nice memories.
I like what you said: " In this bus wheelchairs no way that's the RTA WAY!
This is as close to a Chicago CTA fishbowl bus I’ll ever hear. I keep hearing the 6V71 and I want to hear the 8V71 2 speed. I love that one
I LOVE the confidence of this driver! Makes this video all the MORE enjoyable. step on it and move that bus! :-D
My city uses to have MCTS Flxibles it was
Year April 1978
Model 53102-8-1
53 40ft
102 Inches
8 Detroit Diesel 8v71
1 Air Conditioner
A V8 Flxible just like this was used for the bus engine sound effects in the movie SPEED, even though the movie featured a GM. Watch the movie and listen to how the bus sounds :)
Thank you for posting. This was a great video. I remember taking these Flixible Buses in New York and in Boston as a kid in the 1970s and 1980s. I miss them. How come you do not show the rear of the bus?
Great video and cool to see a TriMet bus kicking butt! (Portland Local here!)
Very cool stuff man! Ive never seen a transit bus with split double seats like that here in Montreal we had Flxibles that were made by Canadair, but unfortunately I was born too late to enjoy them...
It'd be cool to still have some of the era advertisements above the windows...Tom Peterson, Perry Boy's Smorgi,Yaw's Restaurant, Farrell's Ice Cream, watch KGW-8 News with Pete Schulberg & Cathy Smith, etc.
The way the bell (pull cord) sounds, like pinball machine targets.
We had the same flexible buses here in Baltimore. The V8 Detroit diesels, WOO!!! You just couldn't get enough of the old school sound of that V8. You gotta holler like Rick Flair. WOOO WOOO!!!! Lol yeah I'm crazy 😂
Wow, this is fantastic! I've always wondered what it would be like to ride an 8v71 powered Flx.
SEPTA has one in its historic fleet, but I hear they won't let people charter it :(.
I remember riding SEPTA's Flxes. Their 35-footers also had the 8V71. I remember riding them on the Route 108 because my dad worked in a deli in Yeadon.
L.A.MTA should get those old buses, all f Southern Calif. should..of course, after the Nov.2018 elections, with a bunch of lawbmakers (Gov.Jerry Brown amongst'em), don'ty exatly count on it....we need more Republican's, more 1% (and I KNOW, IO also hate politcising this..)_burt they made it so
back to the past
Congratulations on almost being finished with your restoration! I also own a '72 fLX new look, mine is still a work in progress and has been delayed due to various "nickle & dime" issues. Yours sounds great & I'd love to see the finished product! inside and out.
I am the friend who shot the video. The video was shot on HWY 1 between Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo, CA. I would have loved to record more of this trip but unfortunately I ran out of memory. Also the outside of the bus is in the original color scheme as it was while in service in Portland.
Love this video, can't beat the sound of a DD, I miss these. All ours are MCIs D4500s. I would love to own an NJ Transit (it was TNJ then) Flxs 35 or 40', 102. They were in service in the 70s here. I don't know what happened to them now that I want to buy! I'm retired from NJT after a total of 38 years driving mostly MCIs.
I live my White Haven Pennsylvania and there’s a place by a PNC bank that has some NJT MCI MC-9 and I remember a place in Slatington Pennsylvania having a ton of buses from New Jersey transit and they also had some of Allentown’s 1983 neoplan AN440’s there but all the buses in Slatington are gone now sadly
I'm from South Jersey and remember when it was Public Service first! Bunch of old looks GM 5100's. Then became TNJ(Transport of New Jersey) in 1974 and the Flx's came in new in 1975. NJ Transit came to be in 1980 and bought out all the smaller transit companies. Miss those days!
older buses are more reliable because they are less complicated. new buses have far too much technology these days
Michael Langley why can't older buses still be used here like in Southern California....,
EPA.
A.D.A..
Exactly. Sacrificing quality for technology is never a good thing.
lol, "wheelchairs no way! Thats the RTA way!" rofl
Good shooting there. The bus sounds real nice. You dont see detroit powered buses around my area anymore. I think most of them got swapped with a cummins. They used to run gilligs around here that were powered with 6v-92TA's and some 6v71's. Now there either cummins or cats.
i wish british buses had that voice system on it.
THE VIDEO VERY GOOD!!!!!!!!
'Course, if the oldies ran so much BETTER than the new buses why aren't the old buses still running like in. California Lawmakers obviously
@mikewarmblood
This bus is 35 feet long and 102 inches wide.
Michael Jagger, agreed on too much technology for the newer ones..
San Juan 1970 and 1972 units 6v71 and buzzers to stop requested
They had a bunch of these kind of buses on the Tri-Met fleet in Portland, Oregon. Even the seats, the interior colors, etc reminds me of the ones used in Portland, Oregon too. So where did that particular bus served in originally?
@mellotrongirl
What about for Thriftway and Fred Meyer and KPDX-49 and all that sort of stuff?
trimet of Portland Oregon 1972 flxible new look with the 8v71 Detroit diesels with 2 speed Allison automatic transmission &you can't stop people from using profanity
Was that tri Mets old bus? From Portland Oregon.
MPG?
lol wheelchairs no way. Upload more. !!!!!
