We wanted it to be even with the inside of the sink so that the sink is as big as possible for fitting large dishes. And my wife liked the way it looks. As long as the gap between the countertop and sink is caulked properly, this should work perfectly.

Why didn't you create a slight countertop overhang on the sides and the back of the sink?
