The SX 50 does the job. I was also unsure whether to buy the fuji, nikon p520 or sx50 but after all the videos and pictures i've seen taken with all cameras, the sx50 wins. It has the best IQ by far. Hence I bought the SX50 - simply incredible!
I have this camera and it is absolutely amazing! i couldn't be more pleased with it. it may only have 12.1 megapixels but the quality of the images that come from it are amazing. the quality of photo you get at full zoom is also great. it has fish eye built in. also heaps of great features and filters!
Ok, thanks. Looking forward to that and part 2. I've read a couple of modes that existed in sx40 have been removed, such as sunset. Any comments? Also, I just played with the sx40 in Walmart and noticed that stitch assist is only horizontal now. On my s3 IS, which I want to update from, there used to be also horizontal and a multi-row.
Very well done. It is remarkable to hear you say that the one feature you don't like about the camera is the lack of AA batteries. I totally agree with you. But I have spent the last year getting FLAMED on places like Amazon for even suggesting it. The new generation AAs like the eneloop style hold a much better charge, cost much less to begin with, recharge more times, and don't have a shelf life or any of the potentially dangerous internal circuitry in them. Thanks. I wish you the best!
Nice review. Thanks. Is Part 2 done yet? I'm curious about adding a UV filter. I gather what you thought were screw threads are actually not. So can you add a UV filter? If so, how?
I just bought this camera and trying to get a hand of it, first time camera buyer! But wouldn't a rechargeable battery be better than double A batteries?
Many Thanks. I have 3 doubts though, if you could clear me on - 1. I am not sure if the aperture difference in SX50 from SX40 will make lens any slower in real practical terms. 2. The low light results Canon SX50 HS will give over Canon SX40 will be any better or of the same quality. 3. Shutter speed- SX40 is 1/3200s while - SX50 is 1/2000s I am in a big dilemma if i should go for SX50 or SX40 as there is difference of around 150 pounds. If the above points are significant or not. Thanks
Really helpful review. Thank you!! I had in my mind I was going to buy the Nikon Coolpix P520, but after some extra research I decided on the Canon PowerShot SX50 HS. This video really helped me solidify my decision.
Good review, I'm currently using a compact point and shoot and/or my iPhone to take pictures. I need a new camera for my girls sports gymnastics, swimming and other events. Is this camera fast enough to take action shots at a distance. I'm considering the sx50 or the t3i.
I almost always shoot in either aperture priority or manual, there are some differences, I do think that the additional features on the SX50 are well worth it if you are planning to buy one or the other.... If you're looking to upgrade from the SX40, I'd hold off a while for the price to come down, or maybe look into a DSLR if you're planning on keeping the SX40 as well. The S3is is a fantastic camera, just sold mine a month ago for $125 and still worked perfectly after years of heavy use.
I am also looking at purchasing the HS50 versus the Nikon P510. Do you have an opinion on which one has better image quality? As an amateur photographer am I going to miss having RAW (available on the Canon) and not on the Nikon? Is there really that much difference between 42x and 50x for maximum zoom range - or does the image deteriorate or ISO levels so high that it really doesn't make much difference. Thanks for any advise that you may have!
Hi, thanks for the awesome review. How to use external mic? there's no 'mic-in' jack port on the camera. Is there any compatible hot shoe adapter to make it compatible with external mics? thanks in advance.
its1Majic My question was geared more to the idea of first time use. Do you need to charge when you first unbox the camera or use the camera first then charge?
Robert Hughes it depends. I didn't need to charge the first time i used it, but you may have to. To find out what to do, click the power button. If it doesnt turn on, charge it. Though you've probably worked that out by now.
Robert Hughes I charged my battery because when I attached it to make sure it worked the full light did not come on so I just charged it to be on the safe side. Yes I just purchased this camera and opened my box 3 days ago, so on first time use I charged it, and I have not had to charge again yet.
its1Majic How is the camera working for you? What are you shooting with it? I found a great site where an experience photographer explains photography and uses this camera in all the situations.
I have watched your review and really appreciate it, you sound like you really know what your talking about. This coming year I will be a junior in high school. We are taking a senior trip sometime near June of 2015 (to Rome, Florence, Paris, and London) that being said I want to get a good camera. What would you recommend for under 500 (again im a high school student... I don't make much so cheaper is better). It isn't something that will be used once CONTINUED
As already asked . . .Part 1 implies Part 2. As does the info above ("part one of a multi part video series...") Are we going to see it..?? Just curious. .
I have read some reviews saying that this came its inferior to the SX40 in low light conditions .. have you test the SX50 in low light compared to the Sx40 ? btw i love the full manual focus of the SX50 n_n for some reason some dumb engineer take it out of the SX40 ...
I'd like to know your opinion on how the Canon SX50 rates with the Panasonic FZ150 in photo, video and low light quality? I know that the Panasonic goes from 2.8 to 8 and the Canon 3.5 is the lowest is this a big deal in this type of camera? Thanks
Hi, I'm wondering if the slow shutter will work exactly like a DSLR? I mean, I have an old canon compact that can set the shutter up to 1 sec, however, the image is over expose until I can't see anything at all, compare with a normal DSLR. Wonder if you can show some slow shutter photo like waterfall? I'm just one step away from buying this camera, thanks!
It was in 480P when I uploaded it. My internet speed sucks so a 8 min video at 720p would take a while. The actual sample videos from the camera I did in 1080p. Going to probably redo this video once I get my studio cleaned up.
On closer look it seems to be something that looks like a filter thread, canon, and others sell adapters to screw in 57 mm thread filters, I'll make an annotation in the vid. thanks
thank you, i have decided to go with the SX 50 I really liked the sx 40 and like i say this fixes all the problems i had with it! plus the reviews are more positive and it is cheaper! :)
I'm not sure if you mentioned this but I'm thinking of getting this camera to record videos could you a buy lenses like better ones the one professional photographers yes and attach it to the camera?
How do you rate the chromatic aberation / purple fringing (or hopefully lack thereof), especially as compared to the sx40? (Sorry if this got double posted.)
I just got my camera, im over whelmed! I was looking for part 2 you said u would go into detail with everything, but don't see it, anyone know a good in detail video on how everything works on the canon sx50? Thanks!
thanks for the review. On the subject of batteries , i currently have a Fuji that EATS batteries. I plus when they get below a certain level , they wont even turn on the camera. I Hate the use of AA batteries in a camera. i guess its a personal preference .
hello there.. i bought this cam a while ago and felt the grip is getting warmer while i'm toying with it, i took the battery out and it's a little bit hot. is it normal?
Is it applicable for a long video such as an image video or a short movie? I've recently just bought it and eager to know, since i tried to shoot a videoclip and it just turned off 3 mins after, the battery was fine and so was the memory card, pls advise And thanks for your awsome review
Until very recently i had the canon SX40 but dropped and broke it :( so i thought about getting the SX50 but was told about the HX300 and am having trouble making up my mind. I do a lot of wildlife photography and a little low light level work with foxes and bats which is where the SX40 was not exceptional but acceptable. I really need a camera that has a high frame rate (for taking pictures of fast moving birds etc) and one that is going to produce high quality images.
I'm shooting music video I was wondering how long is the exact battery life and is this a better camera for video then my sonyhandy Cam using Vegas to edit ' plz let me know '
Can someone tell me how to use the factory lense dust cover ? What do you do with the little pi e of rope that hangs off it I know.it connects somewhere?
Canon stopped continuing 4xAA's after the SX20is which is disappointing for me since the SX30is. I get a good 4 1/2 hours of use using Eneloops with its older predecessor S5is which is acceptable runtime still active since i bought it. Other than that i'm considering to get this model mainly for CHDK.
Thats true, but you then would need to buy a lense equivalent for the 50x zoom that this camera has. Costing £££ more in the long run. My opinion only.
do you know if i could get a good depth of field with this? as in id just vlog and the background would be blurry? like id sit in front of the camera and just talk and have a blurry background sorta like a dslr?and how will i do it?

i just bought this camera and needed a visual explanation of this camera. Thanks a bunch! Very informative!!
Ok, thanks. Looking forward to that and part 2. I've read a couple of modes that existed in sx40 have been removed, such as sunset. Any comments? You must be having it, how is the macro capability?

awesome friendly unique review!
(waiting for part 2)
Hello thanks for this Part 1 video. is there a part 2?

Great Video, my question is how do you charge the battery for the first time after you buy it?
It comes with a charger port. You place the battery in the port, and plug the port in the wall.
its1Majic My question was geared more to the idea of first time use. Do you need to charge when you first unbox the camera or use the camera first then charge?
Robert Hughes it depends. I didn't need to charge the first time i used it, but you may have to.

I have the SX40, and the battery is actually quite good and durable, after a full day of happy snapping I have only been able to drain it about half.
Thank you, I look forward to part 2
I have watched your review and really appreciate it, you sound like you really know what your talking about. This coming year I will be a junior in high school. Are we going to see it..??
Just curious.
.
Hi- you mention the filter thread on this cam'- is that actually a thread, or merely something that looks like a thread- as per SX40hs..?
I have read some reviews saying that this came its inferior to the SX40 in low light conditions ..
have you test the SX50 in low light compared to the Sx40 ?
btw i love the full manual focus of the SX50 n_n
for some reason some dumb engineer take it out of the SX40 ...
about the filters (that works on sx50) you mentioned, could you please tell me where to buy them?
I'd like to know your opinion on how the Canon SX50 rates with the Panasonic FZ150 in photo, video and low light quality? I know that the Panasonic goes from 2.8 to 8 and the Canon 3.5 is the lowest is this a big deal in this type of camera? Thanks
Hi,
I'm wondering if the slow shutter will work exactly like a DSLR? Wonder if you can show some slow shutter photo like waterfall? I'm just one step away from buying this camera, thanks!
ya i know, i was checking on the lens filters and there are some options that can be place on this camera, as for the sx40.
It was in 480P when I uploaded it. My internet speed sucks so a 8 min video at 720p would take a while. The actual sample videos from the camera I did in 1080p. Going to probably redo this video once I get my studio cleaned up.
Thanks for doing this in-depth video! I'm planning on buying one tomorrow. Suitable for me who doesn't know much about photography
On closer look it seems to be something that looks like a filter thread, canon, and others sell adapters to screw in 57 mm thread filters, I'll make an annotation in the vid. thanks
If you had to add on flash, which one would you purchase?
i've bought this camera it's amazing i love it every thing you see iz every thing your going to get
thank you, i have decided to go with the SX 50 I really liked the sx 40 and like i say this fixes all the problems i had with it! plus the reviews are more positive and it is cheaper! :)
i saw on the canonUSA that it recomends 67mm for this camera the same as the sx40hs.
What size is the lens filter? The details say it needs an adapter for 67mm, but do not say what the size is without the adapter.
I'm not sure if you mentioned this but I'm thinking of getting this camera to record videos could you a buy lenses like better ones the one professional photographers yes and attach it to the camera?
Which filter will fit on the sx50? The 58 or 67 mm? Also, do hoods work with it?
Urgent question! Imbplanning one buying one but im not sure if you can add lenses such as fisheye to it, can tou add fisheye?
Considering the 50X zoom, how far can it zoom without the image quality being somewhat distorted? 20X? 25X?
How do you rate the chromatic aberation / purple fringing (or hopefully lack thereof), especially as compared to the sx40? (Sorry if this got double posted.)
is it good to shoot weeding parities with low light and what is the best camera could do that for me !!... thank you in advance
I havent really noticed any major aberration, will do some tests with simple backgrounds that will hopefully show if there's any problems
Please provide a link for Part 2 video.
Would you recommend this vs the sx500is?
Does it have timelapse timer - regulator or however you call it...?
what about low light pics? please suggest...
I want decide between SX40 and SX50..
One question. How good is it for taking pics of my cat.
Can you get a remote control for controlling the zoom?
if i get a macro lens could i use it with this camera and use the aditional zoom that comes with it + the one i may use?
Can I use my hands and move the camera lens to adjust the focus?
Great review!
Where can I purchase the external audio for it?
Hello sir,
we are planning to buy camera for bird photography.
we are beginner in this field
which one is better
Nikon p510 or Canon HS50
Is there a part 2
How is the image quality compared to FZ150 ?
Would you take the camera on safari? Does it change lens?
question, did you say that battery isn't rechargeable?
Just a couple of clarifications. That is an audio out, not an input for remote shutter button. Also, there is no external mic input.
I just got my camera, im over whelmed! I was looking for part 2 you said u would go into detail with everything, but don't see it, anyone know a good in detail video on how everything works on the canon sx50? Thanks!
pt. 2 just does not seem to be any where online -
thanks for the review. On the subject of batteries , i currently have a Fuji that EATS batteries.
I plus when they get below a certain level , they wont even turn on the camera.
I Hate the use of AA batteries in a camera. i guess its a personal preference .
ok where is part 2 of this vid
Yes,where is part 2 pls
hello there.. i bought this cam a while ago and felt the grip is getting warmer while i'm toying with it, i took the battery out and it's a little bit hot. is it normal?
It should be pretty easy for someone new to learn, I'll be doing a bunch of tutorials on this too, along with general photography videos.
Can this camera run on AC- DC (for long timelapse)...
what size is the thread 58mm? i dont need the adaptor?
Hi, could you do a review of the new SX60 please? Thanks
thanks, can you make a zoom video?
how would that camera do performance wise at night?
Does it shoot full hidef videos in slow motion?
could u make video of how to copy your video and pic to a copy dvd or cd so i can format my SD card
$150 today on the cannon web site a refurb, good advice on the zoom switch, thanks for the review
Very Helpful, thank you.
Is it applicable for a long video such as an image video or a short movie?
I've recently just bought it and eager to know, since i tried to shoot a videoclip and it just turned off 3 mins after, the battery was fine and so was the memory card, pls advise
And thanks for your awsome review
Can i use the same external hot shoe flash on the sx50 as the sx40?
Is the canon sx50 the same as the canon sx40 hs?

i just purchased and was hoping this was in depth. This is not in depth but rather a very simple overview of features.
Does it have a 3.5 mm jack for microphones
does it have autofocus while filming?
I'm shooting music video I was wondering how long is the exact battery life and is this a better camera for video then my sonyhandy Cam using Vegas to edit ' plz let me know '
dose it have an external mic input

I need help…I love this camera. I must have pushed the wrong button …now I can not delete any pictures…How do I fix this?

and i ask cuz im very interested on macrophotograpy. and this is the camera im looking forward to have.
You cant change the lens, its a DSLR-Like advanced point and shoot. The lens can do macro very well though.
