This video provides very good and useful information to import Mini DV Tapes for persons with an apple computer that only has thunderbolt ports. However, it would have been nice if, they had just left one Fire-wire 800 port and one standard USB port on the newer apple computers. What happen to the fun with apple computers? During the 2000's using iLife and iWorks, it was all about ease of use. Since, I am old school my newest desktop is a 2010 Mac Mini with a built-in DVD drive, one Fire-wire 800 port, four USB 2.0 ports, and a Mini Display port. Therefore, importing is a snap just one cable from video recorder to my computer.
To do this on a new Mac with usb-c you would need to buy two cable connecters which are the firewire- thunderbolt and then thunderbolt to USB-C which I will link below. Thats all you need! Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter
Glad to inform you there is a better way to transfer your tapes to your Mac or to your hard drive. It's a Sony HVR- M15 au. All it does is play or record to your DV tapes. Very best way to play or record to Dv, HDV or DVCAM.
I have plugged in my Panasonic minidv camera via dv to firewire 400 then to firewire 800 then to thunderbolt then to USB-C and Lifeflix is not bringing up any video on my 2023 Mac. Any ideas of what I can do?
Hi if you are using the appropriate cables and adaptors (Firewire cable and Thunderbolt adaptors and not a USB cable because a USB cable/port will not work to connect the camcorder), your camcorder should be recognized by the software. You can give the following steps a try:
Confirm you are using Mac OSX 10.7 or later. Keep your camcorder powered on and in VCR mode (sometimes called VTR or Play mode) Unplug the FireWire cable and any adaptor you're using from both the camera and the computer Quit LifeFlix Plug the FireWire cable and any adaptor you're using back into both the camera and the computer Re-launch LifeFlix Click ""Import"" Hope this works, if it does not work either, please contact our support and we will guide you. lifeflix.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new
Yes, but you'd need to use a DV camcorder or converter to first convert the analog video to digital. Here's a short article on this subject: lifeflix.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/203125839-Does-LifeFlix-support-VHS-import-
Hi there , so all I need is an AC adapter suitable for a Sony dvc hc19e and then a thunderbolt to FireWire ? Is there any specific type of thunderbolt to FireWire adapter or can I get any?
Thank You. I have DV / mini firewire out from my old Sony DCR DV camcorder. My old iMac has both firewire and thunderbolt inputs. Can I just use the mini firewire to standard firewire to to do this (ie do I need the extra firewire to thunderbolt adopter - $50 for Apple!). Thanks
Anyone knows if you use the usb port connections instead would be the same process? as my jvc camera has both and like to use usb cable but does not show up like firewire connection!? any tip will be appreciated.
Hi Ivan, you'll need to daisy chain together a couple adaptors. First a Firewire to Thunderbolt (1 or 2). Then another one to Thunderbolt 3/USB C. It's clumsy but it works!

LifeFlix DV Importer for Mac I connected my usb to FireWire that I purchased from the Apple store. Isn’t that what you did in the video as well? Sorry I’m not tech savvy
it keeps cutting the recording even when theres no cut in the video. how can i turn off scene detecting and stop it from ending the recording until i choose to???
LifeFlix will detect segments in your tape depending on how your footage was recorded or how it may read breaks. At times these breaks may cause the footage to be dropped, causing the capture to end.
Please try the following.
Manually fast forward then rewind your tape. Use a head cleaner on your device. Once you reach the drop point during capture. fast forward past that part from your device.
LifeFlix supports most DV camcorders. We offer a full refund if your camcorder is not supported. You can import your footage uncompressed if you're worried about quality. One hour of uncompressed DV will be about 13 GB.

Hi! Thank you for the video it's really useful knowing that I've been searching the solution for a while now... Is it alright if the cable is mini firewire to USB?
Hi Leeloo, unfortunately the USB port from the camcorder cannot transfer data fast enough. Therefore you need to use the Firewire port from the camcorder.
1. Confirm you are using Mac OSX 10.7 or later. 2. Keep your camcorder powered on and in VCR mode (sometimes called VTR or Play mode) 3. Unplug the FireWire cable and any adaptor you're using from both the camera and the computer 4. Quit LifeFlix 5. Hi! Yes, we are aware, thank you! My brother and I developed LifeFlix after initially using iMovie for our own MiniDV tapes. We wanted a dedicated capture app and we also noticed that iMovie started losing some support for capturing MiniDV tapes (audio capture with Canon camcorders is particularly problematic for some reason). Bottom line, if iMovie works for you then that's your solution. If not, we hope people will give LifeFlix a try. There's a free trial and even after purchasing, if you're not 100% guaranteed we'll refund your money.

The USB port will only transfer images, not video. It doesn't have enough bandwidth for video so only the Firewire port can be used for that.
