- When I set out to build my own kitchen island, I didn't realize how complex it would be. While I messed up a lot and using stain grade oak is much harder than building something to be painted, I couldn't be happier with how the island turned out!

Wonderful job, but I agree, black stools would look better. They would tie in your darker upper cabinets. But what you currently have still looks beautiful!🧢

a microwave with a top-loading drawer? i didn't know that such a thing existed. that makes relocating a microwave to somewhere lower than countertop level (or higher) a no-brainer. very slick.

Red oak takes stain very well, but if you’re trying to match existing oak woodwork, good luck. Quite challenging. Nice job on the cabinets and pocket screws.

Oh wow! 😍 I really love that you had the oak for the kitchen island, and didn't make it dark like the cabinets against the wall. Because now it still looks very spacious even though islands tend to be very large/bulky looking! And the black cabinets frames it all very nicely!
As for the bar stools, I think a black base would complement the door handles on the other side of the island really well, especially since the doors on the stools' side don't have any handles. But gold is very fine too! 😊

Way to go turning red oak into something acceptable for a modern kitchen! And yes, black stools. Kitchen looks great!
I would take the cushions off your stools. Then get the paint called plasty dip. And paint them black. This type of paint is very durable. So much that people would paint their rims and other products on their vehicle. And it survives the outdoor elements. But if you ever wanted to change your mind. It actually peels off with a little bit of effort. In other words, it’s not permanent. This way you can keep the style of your stools, which I like very much. And still get the color and design that you’re looking for. Here in Nebraska, I purchased the plasty dip spray paint at my local Menards

Great build. As someone who has done tons of DIY carpentry work in my home (crown, casing, board and batten, ect), I can tell you that building cabinets is a whole other level. I had to completely rebuild the drawers of a bathroom vanity I built because my measurements were off by 1/4". So I feel for you when I saw you were off 1/8th of an inch. Ouch. I agree that the stools would look better with black bases instead of the gold.

I am always impressed with how easy you make it seem but extremely thankful that you include all of your “learning opportunities.” Thanks for all the great content and tips…like in this video the idea to use Carpet Tape blew my mind…I have been struggling to finish a project recently where adding the drawer facing has been driving me nuts. If you want to try the look of black stools but not ruin the gold finish, cover one of the stools in electrical tape. It should come off easily and not damage the gold if you decide to leave the stool with the original finish. Great build!

Un consejo colega: cuando deba teñir maderas que no toman el color deseado ó cambian el color que aplica, lávelas con una solución de sosa cáustica a razón de 3.50oz./0.52gal. cepillando la enérgicamente y luego lávelas con agua jabonosa utilizando jabón de barra blanco y sin perfume del que usaban las abuelas para lavar la ropa a mano. Enjuagando las persistente mente y dejándolas secar. Recuerde siempre usar guantes y protección ocular. Saludos cordiales para usted y los suyos.
Yeah, the stool bases would look better black. Better contrast and it would tie the kitchen together. It would be a great finishing touch. Nice work on everything! Huge upgrade.

Personally am not a fan of gold, it is too over the top, look at me stuff. Quality work and products don't need the glare.
For me the black would add the timeless quality that you are looking for.
But again it is a personal choice.

Black base for sure.
I'd personally leave them that color to let the stools seem like an "expensive" addition to the kitchen but if you really have OCD and want them all one color, then go with black!
