a thing that made big jumps for me is just straight up remaking the songs to learn. it doesn't need to be exact it just needs to feel like the reference. it forces you to really pay attention to the layers and see at what point does it sound right

This called the reference track strategy.

@@asap5629it is a trick once you finally learn it and realize you need to do it. It took me a long time to even come to that realization

Referencing not only helps in making your songs sound more professional, it also helps me in my production overall, like musicality, chord knowledge, melodies, harmonies, rhythms, etc. The more you listen to your favorite tracks closely and try to replicate them, the more you learn that artist/producer's techniques and tricks.

Great comment, thank you so much! Been hitting a rut lately, like an early plateau and this comment really makes me want to delve into my favourite productions

Such a good thing. Even when I produce I produce alongside a song and just steal its arrangement.
    “intro, V1 “
    Etc
Then I started to notice small arrangement details “cut bass here, filter sample out” etc
Someone once said your mentors are giving you lessons. It’s just in their work

this is great advice. also great to have particular songs you know really well on your speakers/headphones - i always use Ramen & OJ as a comparison cause it has great balance so I get even better at using it in particular to compare to my beats/mixes

this is absolutely true, but the most important thing in comparing songs and sounds is to do it at the same loudness (for example lufs momentary)

precciate this kenny & fliko. i made a raw pop punky mix yesterday (first one in years since my accident) & was wondering how i could go beyond a speaker test, car test, phone test etc. to figure out what i could be missing in the mix (quality, what needs tucked away, what needs to set on top of the mix more, etc.). comparing other pop punk songs on my monitors before & after my mixed tracks makes a lot of sense honestly. thanks again

    1. Use great sounds (good source material)
    -> Can't put lipstick on a pig
    2. Make good music
-> Good melodies, basslines, drums etc.
    3. Get rid of shit that hurt your ear
-> But don't bandaid shit, if something isn't sounding right start from step 1

It's ALWAYS my drums: they never seem good enough! It keeps me hungry though, cuz I keep getting better, then I hear someone's else drums... like that new Skrillex album recently!
And you're like, ah shit, my drums are 90% there but not tight enough yet! And everything else needs to be tighter, more crispy, and slightly less harsh and we're good to go!
