Brilliant thank you for posting! We’ve just bought a KONA EV and being a Dad I’m not allowed to read the instruction manual! Good ol’ RUclips 🥰
👊🙂no problem Alan !
You are my saviour! Told service having disengagement issue--they did not tell me this!!-thanks
Glad it helped !!! 🫡
You saved me, man. And btw it used to happen to me quite often... so there is something not fully ok, imo, but thanks to you and your video, life is easier again😊
Glad this was helpful. Thanks for watching!!
Thank you Brian, just bought one yesterday, love it but my old leaf cable didn’t lock in so caught me a bit by surprise, you’ve sorted me out in 2 minutes and given me a plan b too with the inner cable I didn’t even know existed !
Thanks for watching Jenny much appreciated! Glad the information is useful!!
You sound like a good chap, thanks for the solution because my girlfriend was bugging that she could not remove the charge cable from her rental.
Thanks for watching, hopefully it was helpful!
Thanks for your video and very useful info. I did not have to use it but storing it for in case. In my case, the cable got stuck, locked and unlocked a couple of times with no effect. Waited about half an hour, unlocked the car, and voila, cable came out!
Hopefully it’s useful, and I appreciate you watching!
You saved me. The charger company kept telling me to go into the Cargo space I assumed was in the back where I would put cargo, but instead it was under the front hood which you guys call bonnet I believe. Thank you so much.
Hey, thanks for watching, I’m glad it was helpful!
And, I just wanted to say that I had spent about 20 minutes on the phone with THE customer service and I just was starting to get frustrated because of course no one wants to be tethered somewhere and I’ll certainly share your video and I hope you get 1 million views and likes. Thank you.
@@CoastalBachelor2009 ah you’re very good .. I appreciate you 👍 what country are you in ?
Its 4AM… and you saved my day. I can go to work
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching
Saved me in my 2021 Niro PHEV with that same orange emergency release. That is not in many many other Kia EV videos nor the manual!!
Glad it worked !! Thanks for watching!!
I wish I had known this during my first ever charge today! Fortunately kind ever drivers showed me this answer 😁
🙈🙂 it’s all a big learning experience at the start 🙂👍
Thankyou this saved me ❤😊
@@TamaraNJones hey thanks for the kind words !
Thank you for this! I just needed to hit the unlock on the key again 😀👍🏼 (MG ZS)
Nice one , glad you got sorted !
Thank you. Cheers
@@davidlarson2770 thank you for the kind words, and for watching!
I have to pull 2 or 3 times a month in a Hyundai ioniq when home charging, thank God it's still in warranty and it's going to be replaced for free
Thanks and so clear! Awesome video.
Thanks for watching!
Life saver, my 12v battery on my Kia Niro is as dead as a dead thing and I couldn't get the cable out to charge my wife's car!
Glad this was helpful! So it’s the same system on your car also!?
Thanks man you saved my life
Hey glad this helped !! 🙂 thanks for watching!
Thanks!
Huge help because the charger manufacture couldn't even pull the charger up.
Glad this was helpful. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much!!
Glad this helps!
Thank you. Off to see if I can get the Kona to let go of my charge cable now... Having unlocked and relocked and unlocked, and begged, and pleaded.. all to no avail... Perhaps the manual release will set me free. 4 winters with a Chevy Volt. Never once had the car steal the cable. 0.7 Canadian Winters with the Kona... A bit of ice and snow = a big immobile battery pack. (Yes already took a hair dryer etc... No joy)
Did this work Adam ?? I’m getting mixed reports about it’s effectiveness !!
No. Sadly it did not. It seemed like it was doing something initially... But it really wasn't. I eventually had to wrestle the charge plug out with quite a bit of wiggling and force. My experience with non-core drivetrain parts (fiddly bits) and software in the Kona Electric has been abysmal. Cheap bits in essential items (lock mechanism), really badly implemented app, software holes you can get stuck in (fob vs Blue link supremacy battle), etc. I would in a heart beat trade this in for a VW or Chevy EV if they were available around me. It's the first Hyundai I have owned, and there are times I simply hate it. I've never hated a TDI before. I loved my Chevy Volt. But there times like this or when it refuses to let you start and run climate with it plugged in to run off the mains... That I just want to kill it with fire. :(
So I have done everything possible now to get the lock to not engage again, and I've slipped it back in and out (without letting it try to charge) and it's not holding it hostage. But I will have to leave it unplugged so I can be sure I will be able to get to work tomorrow. (98% soc so that's fine for today). But will be crossing my fingers when I go to charge it again in a day or two.
@@darkskyification good work ! 💪🙂 get it checked by the dealer too 🙂
@@doolanbrian for sure. It's a 2021... The emergency release was only ever used today. And it failed. It's that the fix will likely be replacing an assembly, and considering how the pull felt... I almost think it's not mechanical, but a secondary trigger for electrical release. I never felt that it released or moved anything. Maybe it feels different if the locking mechanism isn't broken? But then that defeats the purpose...
Also, FYI. It was cold, and snowed a lot. But I had already taken a heat gun to it and a space heater under the hood to melt or dry anything iced up / wet. Still no dice.
Thank you!!!
Thanks for watching!
Hi, thanks for the tip. Is there an emergency release for the door if it won't open? On several occasions my charge door wouldn't open, even when unlocking the car doors? It seems random when it happens. The door mechanism is lubricated and the 12V battery is charged. Appreciate any tips, especially how to open the charge door when stuck. Thanks
Okay, unfortunately this is tricky, I’m not aware of a failsafe on this, might be no harm to consult the local dealer and ask for them to investigate just to see if there’s anything not working correctly? 🙂
Out of nowhere the charging door to get to the plug has been sticking this week. This has not been an issue for three years of owning the vehicle but now we cannot charge the vehicle. Is there an emergency release for the door? Have you seen this issue and can you recommend how to fix it?
I can’t be 100% sure but I think I have seen charge doors being replaced, I have also experienced a sticky opening flap, unfortunately the way I got around it wasn’t pretty but I basically hit the charge flap a good wrap with my hand where you normally press it and it popped open with the pressure , After this I think you need to visit the dealer, where are you based?
Brian, I was able to get the charger loose. Not the cable seems to not have returned completely preventing me from completely seating and it will not take a charge. Do you know how t get it to reset? Thank you.
I know what you mean , it should return itself, if not it might be a little bit stretched🙈 I have played around with them before by pulling and pushing and eventually become more taught , but it was pure luck rather than a method.. you might need to consult a dealer on this one that is close to you, sorry I couldn’t help better
@@doolanbrian I’ll try WD-40
Thank you.
@@CoastalBachelor2009 I hope you get sorted easily 🫡
How to put it in neutral if out of charge and it is in the intersection? Is there any manual overide or put a 12v batrery source ? Thanks!
Ok the quickest way is to jump start the 12v battery with a booster .. it has a regular 12v battery under the bonnet
To move the car without power might be difficult as you may not be able to release the handbrake if you have no 12v power
On a 2024 Kona E that is out of charge, Will it: 1- go into Neutral, 2- release its electrical parking brake if we jumpstart it with a powerful 12v jumper pack so we can push it out of the traffic lane? @@doolanbrian . Thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge.
@@poormanrentacar268
If there is no charge, you should still be able to release the handbrake and engage neutral once it has 12 V power .. is it literally at 0%?
I am asking a hypothetical question because we deal with drivers who get stranded like that every now and then, and the tow truck drivers need to release the parking brakes and/ or remove it from park so they can winch it on the deck of their flat bed tow truck@@doolanbrian .
@@poormanrentacar268 ah ok 👍 I got ya … I’m away from the garage for a couple of days , when I get back I’ll check to see if there is a shift lock release on the EV that will allow it to be pushed when out of power 👍🙂
I had a problem with my kona today that it dont want to release it and i tried lock - unlock for 10 times turn on - turn on the car tried everything and it was stuck and could hear a buzzing sound like when you start the charge.. so after 10 minute of trying i poped the hood and just pushed that button, didnt pulled that like here in this video and it worked instantly..
Glad you are now sorted !!
Kona saya bermaslah tidak bisa di buka untuk mengecas..bagaimana solusinya...thanks
Hi Brian. Is it the same with the Tucson PHEV. Thanks.
It would be in the boot on Tucson .. over the next week when I get a chance, I’ll video it 😀
Thanks on my first day of owning an Kona EV I almost got fooled
Glad this helped !!
What if the charging door won’t open?? Is there a release for that?
I’m not aware of that .. I’ve had this issue before .. please lock and unlock the car multiple times and see if it eventually engages .. also push the charge door inwards with some force to see if it will pop back out ! It does happen from time to time 🥵
You video saved my day.. thanks 🤍
Glad it helped !! Thanks for watching!!
how about Porsche Caynne plug in hybrid? Thanks
Unfortunately we do not stock that vehicle so I’m unable to help on that one 😣thanks for watching🙂
without someone else useing the charge cable at the charge station
Hi there, sorry, what do you want to know?🙂🙂
@@doolanbrian thanks brian
So basically, if you buy a new car you can't afford, get an electric car, because no repo man will ever be able to repo it, as it's impossible to unplug without the keys. I see repo guys likely to start ripping these things out of the cars because they clearly never took into account this future issue.

What if that doesn't work? Is there any other thing I can try?
This is the failsafe.. The mechanics behind it is very simple so it’s kind of really unlikely to fail .. if it does fail however then you need to consult a dealer🙂✌️
Ring Hyundai. They will advise or refer you on to their tech people. You *will* get it fixed 😁
@@lharris828 turns out the electric lock did fail! So the manual release didn’t work because the electric lock takes priority.
Yes, the mechanics behind this "failsafe" look very simple. And it worked for me once or twice, but no longer - I've pulled pretty hard but to no effect. Calling Hyundai as L. Harris has suggested was a waste of time. Initially a tow truck was dispatched but the driver knew even less than I did. When I called back they referred me to the nearest dealer, who offered to schedule a service appointment sometime the following (next) week - they declined to put a technician on the line, much less send one out. From there things only got nastier. When I turned the car on it directed me to remove the charge cable and refused to do anything - including allowing me to turn it off - until I did. When I checked the car several hours later it appeared to be brain dead - no indication of any electrical activity whatsoever.
@@sethknoepler3250 ok so is the car at the dealer now ??? I wonder has the 12v battery died ?? 🧐 breakdowns are annoying I’ll admit 😓
