    guitar-player here, just stumbling into flute playing. That was a straightforward no nonsene and well presented lesson :) Actually, even if I might eventually fail at flute, I started to notice how much I stop breathing properly when encountering difficult passages on the guitar, since the guitar does not force you to breath, i didn't really notice that before. But if you do do breathe better, you do sound better, even on the guitar. Something to work on.

    Hi Tatiana, after almost 30years of not playing flute anymore I'm back into it since three months. Funny experience! And pretty surprising, how much knowledge remained stored somewhere in my cells. Never expected that! What helps me to regain awareness of the diaphragm is fire breathing from yoga. Like your cha-exhales, just without the c. Two rounds of 50 exhales, and I feel where my diaphragm is and what it does.
    Beside I get a lot out of your tutorials. Thanx!

    Thank you so much for this. I lost a lot of what I was thinking of as 'breath' after cancer/surgeries/chemo/radiation and this is what I need to find my way back to the best air support I will be able to regain. I was an avid swimmer and could swim 4 Olympic pool lengths under water in one breath easily, now I can make it about 3/4 of one (which translates to about 4 measures of playing). I will use this isolation time to exercise and get back as much as I can. Thanks again. I appreciate all your knowledge and skill, and the time you take to share it with others.

      Hi Suzi! I am glad to hear that you are back to playing your instrument. It must be a real challenge after what your body has gone through. I would really recommend taking time every day to just lie on the floor or go for a walk and experience this breathing. Build it up slowly and the rest will follow, but I think understanding that breathing should be free, easy and releasing is going to get you much further. Good luck and always feel free to give me a shout if you need some more help!

Well, more like paying attention to how I was breathing, much like paying attention to how one sits and reminding ourselves to sit straight (always the reminder is in my mother's voice) until it becomes habit. :)

    Great video. This channel is exactly what I was looking for. I'm picking up the flute again after a very long break (like 20 years or so) and this is just what I need. I was self-taught and very proud of that, but I think some coaching would be great for me. I learned several classical pieces (from TV) the themes from several TV shows haha (Taxi, The Bob Newhart Show, etc.) the entire Jethro Tull album Songs From The Wood (everything except The Whistler) completely by ear alone. All I had was that album and a TV and a flute fingering chart. But I know I was doing a few things incorrectly, and proper breathing was one of those things, so I am now subscribed and more excited about playing again.

      But a comment to Marching Band flute players (especially here in the US): If you've had band directors teach more active/engaged breathing, it might be because you are moving physically and often quickly. In that type of athletic flute playing, the additional abdominal support isn't to help your playing/breathing, but to make sure you don't fall over. We often need to separate what we learn on the marching field from what we practice indoors. :)

    Can I just say that I am so grateful for your choice in clothing for this?? The stripes on your top shows the breathing of the diaphragm! I know my breathing is literally my biggest downfall. I always end up breathing where I feel like I shouldn't. I find it really difficult to ration enough breath for notes for more than 2 bars, especially when you start off as mezzoforte or forte and when you start off in the lower notes of the lowest octave. I'm going to try these exercices before I start my flute practicing hours in.
    I was wondering if there was a routine you do for warmups before you start?

    Good one! I took in the data on breath in the context of yoga and martial arts training, circular breathing on didgeridoo learned in the 90's so big belly breath long time in training. Glad to see you teaching it, cause it's still not well known in common society how to breath since we are compelled by our capital, that is head driven society to control everything we can cause it's chaos if we leave it to Nature. That belief makes us tense up and creates the muscular armor I'm even now still trying to dissolve, 30 years after learning about it. It's natural and automatic, but most of us have to fight our habits to remember how to breathe, it takes practice to get back to infant breath. It's called return to childhood breath in the Chinese martial arts. More than just opening the lungs for greater air capacity, pumping the belly and back, sides and perineum too is the primary blood pump in the body. Heart doesn't pump blood on its own, but gives the whole system a coordination wave that's picked up by all the cells and gives rise to our sense of being an individual. Without the belly pump that's why people can't stay warm without heaters and why bones get weak and a whole lot of bad stuff comes from not pumping our bellies. SO, anyway, glad to see the information obviated cause it's not well known. The fact that breathing is so fundamental and non negotiable maybe makes it hard for most people to even realize there's practices to improve it, especially since our society tends to make us lose the natural way.

    The natural elasticity of the lungs make it easy to breath out when you have your lung full of air. Thus, as you have less air in the lungs, you need to use your muscles more & more to support a steady stream of air (same air speed, same air volume) for the flute.

    So the most important concept here about diaphragm is that you have to let it go .. Elsa would say, right? I understand it, that it is like a balloon full of air and using only abdominal muscles I have to control the flow? No pushing, no squeezing just letting it out ... Is that really how flutist play that all the time? I am a little bit not sure about the area of body which controls the flow. When I tried that breathing exercise, I noticed that upper abdominal muscles tighten there (just below the bottom part of ribs cage) when I try to control the flow. Is it that place?

    • @TheFlutePractice
      @TheFlutePractice  3 года назад +1

      Yes! That sounds correct. I think keep exploring. Try say the ssss and ffff daily or even the ha. You are not going to be totally relaxed and doing nothing. Muscles are working, but you are not using excessive force or squeezing but rather the natural ability your body already has.

  • @ThoseMadFoxes4330
    @ThoseMadFoxes4330 9 месяцев назад

    6:49 maybe I’m misunderstanding, but our diaphragm is active when it’s breathing in, -not- in breathing out

    • @TheFlutePractice
      @TheFlutePractice  9 месяцев назад +2

      Absolutely. The muscle contracts when you breathe in and relaxes when you breathe out…but, you don’t actively need to ‘contract’ that muscle. You really just need to allow your body to do it’s thing! I don’t believe we have much control over the diaphragmatic muscle directly.

      @ThoseMadFoxes4330 9 месяцев назад

      @@TheFlutePractice okay thanks for clarifying! And I agree; I’m very aware of my muscles, and I don’t really feel my diaphragm; it’s like me “exerting effort to breathe in” just results in an equal and automatic motion of the diaphragm
