  • Larrabee State Park and Chuckanut Drive--also known as Washington State route 11 are a major destination in Northwest Washington. The road hugs the coast of Puget Sound between the cities of Burlington and Bellingham WA. This was once the only road connecting Seattle and Vancouver British Columbia.
Chuckanut drive has been declared by many to be the most scenic roadway in Washington state however it is actually a bit of a dud these days compared to when the roadway was opened in 1896. The rocky coastal road offered panoramic views of Puget sound and the San Juan Islands including, Lopez Island and Orcas Island but in the 100+ years since it's grand opening, massive trees have grown up blocking almost the entire view from one end of the once beautiful road to the other.
Sponsor a tree? (To Be Cut Down?)
If the department of transportation would consider thinning the trees at least in selected intervals it would vastly improve the beauty of the once great roadway. Fortunately in the middle of Chuckanut drive is Larrabee State Park, Washington's very first state park, offering miles of hiking trails, campground with utility hookups, boat ramp, and beach access. During our visit we were a bit humored by all the information and warning signs seemingly everywhere in the park although in this day and age it is no different than anywhere else.
If you have any additional information about Chuckanut Drive and Larrabee State park that I have not included please let me know. Thanks. I hope you enjoy the video.
This video is an original work created video editing software on my computer with video and photos I took on a visit to the Chuckanut Coast and Larrabee State Park Washington. The titles and effects were created with video editing software as well.

Want To Sponsor A Tree? (To cut it down?)
Nobody is going to be cutting down any trees on Chuckanut Drive any time soon but if they were to thin out the trees the road could be spectacular again like it was when it first opened in 1896.

Brings back lots of memories.....I used to go there all the time when I was a kid....Sad the place definitely looks a bit more worn down than I remember.

Hi Sprdvx. Larrabee is showing it's 100+ year age especially if you used to visit it during the 1800's+. There is a stampede of people there all through the summer months and it does take its toll, especially on the hiking trails on the east side of Chuckanut drive (across the road). The tables and shelters around the park and campground could use a good high pressure wash and a coat of stain as well.
Inspite of all that, these photos and videos were taken in February so the foliage is looking lousy and soggy but when spring comes around the place really greens up. Thanks for watching.

BellinghamsterTrail, no, I'm a bit too young to had visited it in the 1800's, sadly. But I bet it would have been an amazing experience :)

Looks dangerous, Cold water, Killer whales, biotoxins and fire. All of those possible dangers with no booze? Glad the water here is warm and clean(er)

I like to go to state parks to listen to dogs barking and stepping in dog shit.
    Trees will stay.
    Dogs should go.
