Back in 1972 Canada played an 8 games series against the Soviet Union called the Summit Series. Four games were played in Canada and 4 in Moscow. The Canadians underestimated the Russians and headed to Russia down in the series, only to come back and win the final 3 games to win the series by the slimmest of margins. The hockey was brilliant, hard fought and often dirty. I was 16 in 1972. TVs were set up in schools libraries and cafeterias so we could watch the games live from Moscow. The Cold War was still raging and the series has been described as war on ice. It is well worth a watch.

The Golden Goal. I was watching the game in downtown Vancouver. When Sid put the puck in the back of the net, you could hear an eruption of noise-people, cars, freight ships. I'll never forget it. Every time I see and hear that call, I get goosebumps. Then 2011 happened. 😢

The absolutely most iconic goal in Canadian history is Paul Henderson scoring against the Russians in the 1972 Summit Series.

The Tournament at the 7:00 mark is the World Cup of Hockey. A semi-regular event organized by the NHL. This was from 2016, which is last time it was held. Rather than a qualifying tournament the top 6 nations in the world were entered (Canada, USA, Russia, Sweden, Finland, and Czechia). Additionally a team consisting of the top European players from other nations (Slovakia, Germany, Switzerland, etc) was entered. A North American team was also entered consisting of the top U23 players from Canada and USA.

We don't get that many best-on-best tournaments except for the World Junior Championship. It's played every year. There is the World Championship of hockey, but the NHL playoffs are still happening, so it never sees all the best players. So that's partly why the World Juniors are so popular. It's the hilghight of the year for me. Most people are looking forward to Christmas, but World Junior starts the day after Christmas every year.

The World Junior Hockey Championships (for Under 19 years of age) takes place every year immediately after Christmas and runs just past the new year. The tournament is so big in Canada that they went a stretch of holding it every second year here (other years are hosted in Europe or the USA). Most times the tournament is held in an NHL city using the NHL arena and all Team Canada games will be sold out (both preliminary round and playoff rounds) so that would be approximately 18,000 fans per game for Team Canada. It has really become a Christmas tradition in Canada to watch one of the few best-on-best tournaments in hockey. Because most International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) sanctioned championships are run when the NHL is playing, the best players will be found playing for their NHL club teams rather than participating in nation-based tournaments.
Finland, Sweden, the USA, and Canada will hold a best-on-best tournament in February but it is an NHL tournament (the NHL will stop playing during this event) and not an IIHF tournament.

I was at the game in entry number 9 with my dad, where Tavares scored the hattrick against team USA. It was in Ottawa, Canada's capital. So naturally, world watching, in Canada's capital, you can guess that the fans were absolutely buzzing that night. It was actually a very dramatic world tournament for Canada.
The same tournament as entry number 3, in fact! I was lucky enough to be in attendance for that game as well. The atmosphere was electric. Complete strangers high-fiving and hugging. Chanting the names of players on the team in the arena halls after the game was over. The gold medal game was less exciting, because Canada handled Sweden quite easily, winning the final game of the tournament 5 to 1.
But damn if the comeback against team USA and the nail-biter against Russia weren't some of the most intense and exciting sporting moments I've seen in my life.

The IIHF World Junior Championship (the Juniors) is the icing on the Canadian Christmas cake.
20 gold, 35 medals total over the 47 years since it started (officially) in 1977. The Russians have 13 gold, the US has 6.
To grow up Canadian is to grow up in the shadow of a bigger, more famous older cousin with all the cool shit that sometimes steals YOUR cool shit. So ya, little bit of a rivalry. CAN/USA is always a banger, especially the Women's teams.

Major Junior Hockey in Canada is HUGE.
There's 3 Leagues and you can have anywhere from 10 000 to 18 000 people at regular games. These are "Professional" leagues for players from 16-20. Kids that play in these leagues can get a weekly pay and a full University scholarship paid by the teams if they don't make it in hockey as a adult pro player. They need to mix in hockey and school and often living away from their parents in cities that might be far away.
In Quebec City there's an International Pee-Wee hockey tournament (Under 13) That can bring in over 200 000 people to attend. There's teams that show up from everywhere in the world all the way from Australia to local teams. There's been some big legends that have been spotlighted from that yearly tournament... Players like Guy Lafleur who scored over 60 goals in these tournaments even made National News.

Yes, in WJC you're allowed to use the same shooter after the first three attempts. Canadian coach Craig Hartsburg had the option to choose any player from his bench, and he went with Toews again after saves by each goalie. Toews beat Frazee again, but Peter Mueller beat Price to tie the score. Two more players failed to score, so Hartsburg went to Toews for a third time, and for a third time the 18-year-old scored

Answering your questions as I watch:
    1. The World Junior Hockey Championship (IIHF U20 World Championship) takes place just after Christmas every year. Most of the players in the tournament are about to go pro and all the junior hockey teams in the world allow their players to go. Since the NHL wasn't at the olympics for a long time it became the biggest competition because it was the closest to "best-on-best" a world championship could be because the actual World Championship takes place during the NHL Playoffs so playoff teams won't allow their players to go.
    2. Canada draws the biggest crowds at the World Juniors. To the point that the host rotation gives North America every 3rd tournament minimum.
    3. Canada/USA is a big rivalry, especially at the Junior level. Canada/Russia is more iconic historically.
    4. It was Team Europe. The World Cup of Hockey was an NHL sponsored event so limited non-NHL players were allowed to play. To get to an acceptable quota of teams they added a Team Europe. Any european player outside of Russia, Sweden, Finland & Czechia was eligible. People thought they'd be bad but they made it all the way to the final before losing to Canada.
    5. IIHF rules state after the inital set of shooters players can repeat. Since Canada and USA had absurd penalty shot takers in Toews and Muller, they just repeated shooters until one missed.
    6. I was at work at a hotel booking center when Crosby scored his Golden Goal. Frequent guests were calling us, not to book, but to give us updates.

It might be different now that they're put in electronically via the video production, but prior to that, no matter where on Earth the World Junior Championship was held, the majority of the ads on the boards were for Canadian companies because the audience here absolutely dwarfs any other country's.

The shootout in hockey is the same as football. 5 players are designated to take the shots. If it's still tied, then they go one on one. I think in hockey a player may take a second shot. Stand to be corrected if I'm wrong. One of you hockey guys let this old dame know. Best goal ever - Paul Henderson. 🇨🇦

I don't know if it's changed since but the shootout with Toews against the USA at that time international rule was 3 shooters each then if still tied you could use the same person as many times as you wanted after

@@Vanquish79 Thanks for that. Interesting rule. In football (soccer to North Americans), if it's still tied after the designated five, then they start using the rest of the team who were on the field when the game ended. Even the goalie might get pressed into service. I've never seen it, but I imagine once they've used every player, which would be 11, counting the goalkeeper, then players could take a second shot. I wonder what game featured the greatest number of penalty kicks or shots, ever.

The reason the junior’s are as popular as they are in Canada is because of the punch up in piestany 1987 we actually have that one recorded from 1987

Canada and Russia was once the rivalry but I understood the USA have had a program for their Jrs the last 20 yrs or so and they can now field a 20 man team that can give Canada a run for their money. Canada with a pretty small population and the Americans with 300 plus million if a small fraction of Americans take an interest in hockey that percentage would far exceed Canada's population.
Only the wine and cheese crowd miss Canadian international games.

Another suggestion is a short video about the Canadian gold medals at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Long story, Canada had hosted the Olympics twice before; the summer games in Montréal in 1976 and the winter games in Calgary in 1988. Usually the host nation wins more medals than usual, especially gold medals. Canada set the dubious record of hosting two Olympics and not winning a single gold medal on Canadian soil. In fact, the IOC(one of the most corrupt sports organizations in the world, right up there with FIFA) ignored Canada as a possible Olympics’ host. However, after Calgary, Canadian governments started funding amateur sports a lot more. So in Vancouver, Canadian athletes won 14 gold medals, which set a new record for gold medals by a host nation at the Winter Olympics. The video is only 3 or 4 minutes long but captures the moments beautifully. Brings back lots of good memories as I live in Vancouver. Highly recommend it!

For another reaction, see: "The Unknown History of how HATE fuelled the 2002 women's hockey gold-medal game | CBC Sports". It's really quite a story I think you'd find interesting. The rivalry between the US and Canada when it comes to women's hockey far surpasses anything on the men's side, and that's saying something.

I understand this was meant to be "recent" goals but I have to say most of these goals were nothing special if you watched Team Canada before 2010. The 1st and 3rd Tavares goals are only special for the occasion but are far from "the best" even in their time period and most of the others weren't particularly memorable.

    Who is Canada's biggest Rival?
    Russia.
The Americans like to say they are, but the true rivals are the Russians.
It started in '72 and continued in the 80s during the, uhm...
Momentary ban that both the USSR and Canada got from International hockey for fighting.
    Yes. Really.
