Kenny Jones is such an incredible drummer. Never appreciated his taient back during this time period but listening now I appreciate what he brought to the bands live performance. This is coming from a huge Keith Moon fan😂
Kenny was in an impossible situation. He was attempting the impossible by replacing Keith and he had to almost completely change his style. I think he did great, I would love to see any of these drummers who slated him do a better job. RESPECT!
Moon was beloved by fans, but the sad truth is that he was replaceable by a talented drummer like Kenny Jones. In fact, Townsend was considering replacing Moon due to Moon’s drinking problem prior to his death. Contrast this with the death of John Bonham causing the dissolution of Led Zeppelin. In any case, losing talented musicians is tragic. If only we could have traded Phil Collins for both Bonham and Moon.
Yes, I know Moonie was gone. And yes, I know Pete was drunk off his ass most of the time. But I don't care what anyone says - the 1979 Who set lists were the most varied and surprising of any tour that the Who ever did, with or without Moon. And in most '79 shows, the band played tighter than hell. Kenny Jones' drumming was superb during these shows, Rabbit on the keyboards was a great new touch, and the brass section added extra punch. If it wasn't for the sad and unfortunate tragedy of the eleven fan deaths at the Cincinnati show putting a huge cloud over the general events and press coverage of the band in December of that year, I would contend that the 1979 Who stands proudly among their best years. I would also highly recommend that the 12/8/79 show in Chicago which is widely circulated be seen by all Who fans in its entirety. It simply smokes.
I agree and wish we could get more official releases from this tour. That is probably unlikely due to all of the negative things that happened on the tour and to the Who 1978-82. Is the Chicago show partially damaged due to improper preservation? Is that why only part of it was officially released as a bonus to Amazing Journey?
Pete's clams are making me appreciate Paul Kossoff all the more. Check out Paul's live videos with Free--he put more emotion into one note than most guitarists put into a hundred.
Everyone looks they’re having the time of their life on that stage. I know Pete was hammered, but his playing was great in this performance. But KENNEY AND ROGER MAN!!!!
Kenny Jones is doing yeoman's work here, sounds completely locked in, Pete's so fucked up he's at about 80% where he should be, The Ox and Daltrey are in soaring, despite it all, my all-time favorite band.
timkjazz Well said - you're hitting nails on the head! Even Roger would struggle to find fault with Kenny here. Who fans can be very forgiving of Pete's 'inconsistencies'. Yes, he's a genius, but about 25% of Who shows I've seen have been marred by him not being in the right mood, or afflicted by something.
Disagree about Townsend. He might have been fucked up, but he was playing through his pain and it showed in his intensity. Maybe you had to have been there. I saw them again in 1982 and while that show was good, they weren’t nearly as powerful.
Kenny Jones was a great drummer in his previous bands and for The Who during his tenure. Comparisons to Moon are a waste of time. Listen to his drumming on the last 90secs of Wham Bam and you'll see what I mean.

Yes!
@Steve Jones true say,! Have a look at Kenney at Live Aid, probably one of his best Who performances.

totally agree.

I like clams fried.
Everyone looks they’re having the time of their life on that stage. I know Pete was hammered, but his playing was great in this performance. But KENNEY AND ROGER MAN!!!!
By Pete's admission later he was suffering some pretty big substance abuse problems around this time, but still a great performance.
Pete on booze and drugs is far better than most sober
@@johnnythunders5408 you got that right.

timkjazz Kenny Jones couldn’t carry Keith’s stick bag!

@biff0101 this is the legendary Kampuchnea concert it was just uncovered not to long ago../.
Powerfull chorus by the Ox
man! it's hard listening to Pete attempting guitar solos, just play those massive chords.
kenny Jones does well here. He didn't deserve the treatment he got.
Quite correct
100 percent. Daltry never appreciated what he brought to the band.
Awesome!!!!
Pete is just partying away, but sounds great ... most of the time

yep
Daltrey is the hero of this version.
Great version, where did the video of the concert come from? I did not even know this existed
Ugh. Horribly out of tune. Listen to the 1973 version, and it blows this one away.
He was very very drunk at the time.
wow pete..alot of bum notes during thoses solos...Were you drunk on this night?
Most likely, yes. He was drunk a lot during this period.
i figured he was...lol...
8:21 lol
