Coral Pink Sand Dunes features sand in a color unlike what one might find at other parks such as White Sands National Park or Death Valley National Park. But you might be asking yourself how it gets its color.
The color of the sand comes from the nearby Navajo sandstone rich in iron oxide that is commonly found in other distinctive neighboring red rock areas. The wind is accelerated through canyons, breaks down the sandstone surfaces, and eventually deposits it into the nearby open valley. Over time dunes are formed when enough sand grains accumulate.
Located by nearby larger parks, such as Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, and Grand Staircase-Escalante, Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park makes for an excellent quick trip at the end of the day. Sunsets at the park are nothing short of amazing and the reason for many photographers to venture out.
For those seeking more adventure, 90% of the park, or 1200 acres, is open to ATV riding. Many companies in the area rent out vehicles or provide tours for visitors wishing to ride in the dunes.
Others seeking more pedestrian-friendly adventures are free to hike the dunes or experience sandboarding and sledding. The Visitor Center rents boards to guests on a first-come, first-served basis.

Welcome to the Cactus Atlas! We are Glenn and Amy and invite you to join us as we visit all sorts of locations across the American West. We tour both natural and man-made attractions.
Our base of operations is in the Phoenix, AZ area. We do a lot of hiking and day trips as well as campground reviews, and hope that we will be a great resource if you are planning a trip to the American West. We also hope to delight you with our exciting adventures!
Magical indeed Glenn...thanks!
We're so glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching! 😄
Beautiful!
Thank you!
great video Glenn! Truly an amazing place to spend an afternoon. Nice to meet you in person at the parking lot! :D
Thanks so much for checking it out! Likewise about meeting you! You are now the first official viewer of a video who has spotted me in the wild! Take care and thanks for dropping by!
This was fantastic! The light change from golden hour to blue light was so beautiful against the pink sand. How many cups of Utah came home with you in your boots? That looked like superfine sand. And the music was so surreal and soothing.
🤣 I can't quite remember which car Glenn took on that trip, but I swear I still am finding reddish dirt/sand in and around my car still to this day! 😂
Wow 🤩 the colors 😎 those boards look fun 🤩 but doesn’t that hurt to drag your hands down the hill 😬
Can't say. Possibly? Probably hurts less than losing control and flipping face first into the sand or something equally as unfortunate. 😂
We camped there a few years ago (in a camper) and it was the coldest place on our May, 3 week Utah trip. The outside dogs water dish froze solid! People in tents were also very cold, and miserable....We loved it in our snug camper...except for the constant droning of the off road vehicles....
Yeah, as a tent camper myself, that kind of cold is a bit outside of what I enjoy. 🥶 Brrrrr! I imagine that people drive late into the night then?
@@CactusAtlas Actually it was super quiet just before dark. Pretty courteous bunch. Maybe the cold and they were all pooped out from riding all day? We were in a 4 Wheel pop up camper with a Buddy heater. Saved our frozen behinds.
As I started the video I was going to ask if you were still thinking about getting a four runner but you covered that. You would love an OHV. A lot of cool areas in your neck of the woods also. I have two cheap ones for me and my daughter and it's fun to get out for a few hours. Love your videos as always you are such a breath of fresh air. Looking forward to the next one.
Yup! We're still thinking about getting a 4Runner but it's not happened yet as the pandemic caused inventory and cost issues. Still going to make it happen though! 😄 Thanks for comment and kind words. 👍
Number 1 favorite sand place you have made a video. Extraordinary beauty in that sand. Well photographed and background music fit it so well. Loved it
Many thanks! We aim to please! 😄
What a beautiful sunset! Such a gorgeous place to be during golden hour! Cant wait to see more on this trip!!!
It really is! The setting sun just turned everything an amazing color. There's a lot of video from this trip that will be sprinkled in in the upcoming weeks. We can't wait to share. 😀
Man, my girlfriend and I made a random stop here on our way from Bryce Canyon NP to Flagstaff, AZ and it seemed so unimpressive, but now I see we clearly just weren't there at the right time of day. The park really seems to come out at sunset.
I know what you mean though. I arrived a couple hours before filming and could not fully detect all that color. But yeah, once the sun goes down, I felt at times I went into some 1980’s-style pink neon-lit world with people surfing sand dunes. It was unreal, but also a bit short-lived, but still so worth it!
Wow, this place looks awesome at sunset. I stopped by during the day a few years ago but now I wish I was there later. Great video as always.
Thanks so much! The sandstone seems to be made especially for sunsets because it really was something.
Nice! When did you go?! I skipped that one twice but I heard it’s awesome! Maybe next time!
The video was filmed on 9/6/2021. You should go! It's really an awesome place... especially around sunset. 😀
beautiful place and I think you need a RZR. You can tow it behind the car and tool around Carefree in it too :P
Haha! That would definitely be cool! 😅
Glenn,We are staying in kanab for four days. We, of course, will go to Zion. We’re doing a UtV tour, Best Friends tour (I am an animal nut). What else?
There are a few small things around Kanab that I have yet to see, like Belly of the Dragon, Moqui Cave, etc…. If you are going to be in Zion, Grafton Utah is close and a must see if you like history.
Wow, that does look amazing!! I've driven by here but never had the time to stop. Awesome video, thanks adding to my list. I've seen White and Black sand, got to have Pink too!! :)
Thanks and always happy to help! 😄
So pretty I watched it twice! There are so many gorgeous places in Utah that are inaccessible without an ATV. I really want to go to a rock formation in Canyonlands called the Dollhouse, but the road is a killer. There is boat access from Moab though, so maybe someday...
Why thank you for watching twice!!! 😊 I am hoping it will be very soon when I at least have 4 wheel drive and can explore new places, but yes, I think having an ATV in addition to that would extend my reach even further, and my list unexplored, hard to access places grows longer all the time!
Please consider not getting an off road vehicle/dune buggy thing. They might be fun, but they are so hard on the natural environment (unless ridden very tamely on dirt roads & stuff). They tear stuff up, cause erosion, are loud and are also really hard on the animals trying to live there. Thank you so much for your beautiful videos!
Thank you for watching as well as your words. Very appreciated.
@@CactusAtlas thank YOU for your lovely videos. I just recently found your channel. I have appreciated the beautiful scenery and also your commentary. Thank you for hearing and considering my love for the natural environment, and the wildlife that doesn’t have any choices as to what happens with their home. :)
Yeah, don't buy one. I agree with SomaticWise and they also contradict your wilderness/LNT values.
