My favorite quote from Gandalf: "Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends."
as a 11 YO child reading LOTR for the first time, this really struck me in a deep, meaningful level. 25 years later its still the first thing that comes to my head whenever someones asks for my favourite quote, and its a fundamental part of my life philosophy. truly wise words, only slightly better than "I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil"
That's very much Tolkein's point in the story. That it was only because of Gollum that the ring was destroyed. That Frodo and Sam would never have survived without him. That, therefore, when Bilbo almost killed Gollum all those decades before in the dark of a cave under the misty mountains, but didn't because he felt a moment of pity; that that random act of pity turned out to actually have saved the entire world.
“Well, here at last, dear friends, on the shores of the Sea comes the end of our fellowship in Middle-earth. Go in peace! I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil.” -Ólorin, or Gandalf

I've always gotten Gandalf story in bits and pieces. when he was with this group, or when he was with this group. It's really nice to have it all in chronological order.
At last we get the history of the great Maiar Olórin, known to most as Gandalf the Grey and in time White. He more than any other of his order safe guarded the lands of Ennorath and it is to him the peoples of Middle Earth owe their freedom. A fascinating look into this most pivotal of Wizards, well done, well done indeed.
For sure Gandalf was one of the most amazing characters in the lord of the rings and the hobbit truly a wise wizard who succeeded his tasks from the valar to be a guardian and the knowledge for all men, elves, and dwarves
Gandalf is my favorite character. He is inspiring character, he is there to encourage the characters to do the right thing at the moment. My favorite quote from Gandalf: All we to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.
"What if?" situation that's been worming it's way through my head the last couple weeks: what happens if Gandalf doesn't fall with the Balrog and he survives Moria with the rest of the Fellowship? Does the fellowship still split up? Is Gandalf able to intervene before Boromir tries to take the ring, is he able to prevent Merry/Pippin from getting captured? How involved is Rohan without Gandalf there (or not powerful enough) to free Theoden from Saruman? Can Sauron be defeated if Gandalf is "only" Gandalf the Grey and never becomes Gandalf the White? Is he somehow able to become Gandalf the White Does the balrog presumably surviving the fall affect the repopulation of Moria later on? Did Gandalf *know* that he had to die fighting the Balrog in order for Sauron to be defeated? Just some fun things to think about, that single moment is so pivotal, the whip missing his leg changes the entire story!
But if Harry’s able to deliver the infinity stones to mt. doom batman won’t need to stop Megatron, that means the sandman would have never have come back and Atlantis never would have sunken.

I think it is because he was arrogant and in his mind Gandalf was a weak as the Hobbits he loved so much. Saruman with all his powers could not see beyond himself, once again proving that he lacked wisdom, like do all those that believe themselves to be superior.

Radagast was to aid the Free People by helping tend to plants and animals. The problem is that Radagast cared more for nature than he did the people. So he technically failed too.
My favourite quote from Gandalf is from his conversation with Frodo in Moria: “I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo. "So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” As we are currently facing dark times, I feel this quote is very relevant. Some times dark times happen upon us, but we must all make the best of the situation. Stay safe everyone, wherever you are! And remember that the dark times will pass.

My favorite rapper, Eligh, also goes by the name Gandalf. The wizard was one of his greatest inspirations as a child. He has produced multiple instrumental beat albums including "Gandalf's Beat Machine" series Volumes 1-3 as well as the "Gandalf's Trunk Machine" series. I very much recommend all of his music. His lyrics have taught me much about life and myself, and have helped me through some tough times. He is a Mithrandir indeed.
This epic character history of Gandalf was so good I paused it and ran off to pop some corn and get an icy beverage. Yoyston you've made C-19 TOLLERABLE! KUDOS!
His title when he returned was "Mithrandir the White" Head of the Istari, which is seldom used. Denethor the Steward of Gondor referred him as Mithrandir
Great Job! Gimli the dwarf wanted to go through Moria , Gandalf tried to take a mountain pass but Saruman created a storm that forced the fellowship to go thru Moria , Gandalf had foreshadowing of his death in Moria....and Saruman knew the balrog was in Moria
Houston, your Gandalf on I to is the spitting image of MARVIN LEE. It makes me wonder how Lee would have played Gandalf. I imagine he would have been fabulous and where I will accept no one other than Ian McKellen as our beloved character, Lee would have been an absolute comic genius in the part.
Gandalf: "I once knew every spell in all the tongues of Elves, Men... and orcs.." Pippin: "...What are you going to do then?" Gandalf: "Knock your against these doors, Peregrin Took!"
So when Gandalf returns to Valinor, is he able to shed his form and become the elf like being known as Olorin or is he trapped in an old mans body forever?
I would imagine he'd be able to shed his form once that mission was over. I would imagine though he'd still wear it (at least at times) as he'd become accustomed to it. Then again, for a Maiar, a few thousand years is but a blink of an eye.
The elf was also not his original form, but just one he would take when interacting with elves. “He would mingle with them, if he wasn’t wondering around unseen” I believe the video says
Olorin's story is one of my all time favorites next to Samwise Gamgee. He started off meek and genuinely afraid of Sauron, believing that he wasn't able to stand against such evil. Which was why Manwe encouraged him to go. That by facing his fears he discovered his courage. And in doing so he was the only Istari (that we know of) who completed his task set before him. But more importantly he rarely used the powers he had and simply offered wise council. This I find interesting because it shows that he's sharing what he learned from Manwe in believing in others so that they will find their own strength and courage to face their foes. And the fact that he had to leave Middle Earth in the end made me feel genuinely sad. By the end of the book I felt like I was saying one last farewell to a good friend.
Mithrandir did much in his time on Middle Earth. Of his top three of defeating the Balrog, helping destroy Smaug or destruction of the one ring, was his most impressive feat? For me it's the Balrog but Smaug the dragon was also near impossible.
Gandalf had no part in killing Smaug. Except for inciting the dwarfs to claim their treasure which would cause Smaug to attack the town where he was killed.
@@johan.ohgren The dwarves had no part in killing Smaug either. That was Bilbo finding his weak spot where he had no scales. Then Bilbo spoke of it to the dwarves while the Thrush listened, so when Bard was fighting the dragon the thrush landed on his shoulder and told Bard where the spot "as bare as a snail out of his shell" was. Bard killed Smaug with his "Black Arrow" forged years before in the smithies of Erebor. Have you ever read "The Quest For Erebor" in the Unfinished Tales? Gandalf told Thorin, who would not bring Bilbo on his quest, "that if you take this hobbit with you you will succeed, but if you don't you will fail. A foresight is upon me Thorin Oakenshield."
My favorite quote from Gandalf: "Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends."

Is that Eligh the great crow? Yeah man I love him.
@@vaughanlloydjones3884 The one and only grey crow!
Fabulous research and knowledge. A most excellent Character History. Great presentation.
I WOULD LIKE TO SEE A VIDEO ABOUT THE WIZARD STAFFS AND OTHER WEAPONS. THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING YOU DO.
Brilliantly done my friend! That was by far the best and most in depth look into Gandalf/Mithrandir I have seen to date! You got my subscription!
This video made Gandalf my favorite Tolkien character.
This epic character history of Gandalf was so good I paused it and ran off to pop some corn and get an icy beverage. Yoyston you've made C-19 TOLLERABLE! KUDOS!
Tolkien gave us the greatest gift. To all the world's I escape too in times of need, middle earth is my favorite.
His title when he returned was "Mithrandir the White" Head of the Istari, which is seldom used. Denethor the Steward of Gondor referred him as Mithrandir
Gandalf has to be one of my favorite wizards out of the Istari and in Tolkien’s works great video as always! 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great Job! Gimli the dwarf wanted to go through Moria , Gandalf tried to take a mountain pass but Saruman created a storm that forced the fellowship to go thru Moria , Gandalf had foreshadowing of his death in Moria....and Saruman knew the balrog was in Moria
I was talking aloud to myself, a habit of the old...choosing the wisest person in the room to talk to:)
Gandalf is my favorite fantasy character hands down
Houston, your Gandalf on I to is the spitting image of MARVIN LEE. It makes me wonder how Lee would have played Gandalf. I imagine he would have been fabulous and where I will accept no one other than Ian McKellen as our beloved character, Lee would have been an absolute comic genius in the part.
Very nicely done. Always appreciate your emphasis on friendships & good qualities.
My most favorite character from The Hobbit, and LOTR. Excellent video!
Great video. Gandalf is my favorite literary character of all.
The perfect video to wake up to on Monday.
Gandalf: "I once knew every spell in all the tongues of Elves, Men... and orcs.."
Pippin: "...What are you going to do then?"
Gandalf: "Knock your against these doors, Peregrin Took!"
What was his original form?
truly one of the great characters in all of literature, and sir ians portrayal of him one of the greatest in cinema
Excellent video! Gandalf is one of my favorite characters in all of fiction.
One of my favorites of your videos ever!!! You, sir are a legend!
Gandalf may not have rabbits go out of a hat but he definitely shows his power when he really need it
I somehow missed, after reading twice the books, that Shadowbox accompanied Gandalf into the west. Great video!❤
Thank you for this fantastic look at the character of Gandalf!
Thanks my friend , 24 min video gratefully received. Your almost there on subs well done
16:25 nice to once in a while see it cited correctly, that Elrond commanded that flood, rather than Glorfindel or, in newer days, Arwen.
Thank you! Your photo of Gandalf , he look like that, He came to the fair's where I lived Mirkwood
am just here, binge-watching all your videos.....
Definitely worth the wait! Love your videos!
Mithrandir did much in his time on Middle Earth. Of his top three of defeating the Balrog, helping destroy Smaug or destruction of the one ring, was his most impressive feat? For me it's the Balrog but Smaug the dragon was also near impossible.
For me, it is taking charge during the Battle of Gondor when Denethor gave up, and everyone was in despair, when things seemed completely hopeless.
@@MountainFisher not directly no, but the dwarves and Bilbo are the reason Smaug left his mountain so Bard could kill him.
Try blowing ships as you smoke.
I dare, I double dare you!
Well done great video , writing was very good hard subject to condense
Mr. West: “You’re late” lol 😆
“A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.” Edit: Precisely when his internet wants him to.
