    I have these headphones and am very pleased with them. You can't sleep on your side in them, but the noise cancellation is very good. They fit very tightly in the ear and do not fall off when running. Just right for my ears. The sound is very good and I’m glad that I was able to connect my Sony TV to my TV and now I don’t hear any extraneous sounds when watching my favorite movies.❤

    Changing the volume with taps is indeed badly implemented but it does NOT take that many taps. After the fourth tap every subsequent one will increase the volume, and MAYBE logarithmically (at first in small steps, and later in larger steps).

      @DavidEsp1 7 месяцев назад +1

      Ah! You're right! Provided the successive tapping is done rapidly enough. Much more practical. Still inconvenient though, he's right about that, and like him I wish all the taps/gestures were fully re-assignable.

    I've had two pairs of Sony's (XM4 and Linkbud S) and both sets have had one ear bud battery fail to charge properly ~1 year after purchase. For $300, I'd like to be able to use these for several years if I want. The cost to replace is essentially the same as a new pair, so in my case, they've been disposable after a year of use. I've seen similar issues with Sennheiser as well.

    @Triple-6 Год назад +5

    I love this video dude! I like the humor and overall style. I’ve watched some of your other stuff but it’s been a short while. I really like the section where you compared mic performance against the previous XM4. It was outside in an actual environment on the extreme side and it was also long enough to really listen and notice a thing or two. It was also pretty funny, really like that. I do think the XM5 was a little more intelligible, but man these aren’t too good compared to some other earbuds huh. Also like that bit where the “Nigerian prince” called during the short head gestures section lol. Little funny things like that are a nice touch.
    I agree with the negatives. The eartips may be ok if they fit and happen to be comfortable, but if not, you’re screwed and are forced to look elsewhere. It’s a shame Sony is leaning so heavily into passive noise isolation and don’t even want to provide silicone tips, for example. They know these don’t perform nearly as well without their unique eartips as AREGINA shows during his testing. Controls should be like Sennheiser’s MTW earbuds where you can customize each and every tap. These are premium earbuds in 2023, pretty straightforward.
    The previous XM4 battery situation is all over the internet as I’m sure you’ve seen. While a small difference between left and right earbuds isn’t the end of the world, when it starts to become very noticeable, it doesn’t make you feel too good considering the XM4’s situation. Really hope it doesn’t become that. I haven’t experienced it with my XM4. An important note is that I’ve noticed a lot of people mentioning they either charge wirelessly or use chargers that can provide high wattage, and many experience excess heat during charging. I know modern devices are supposed to be able to limit how much they can receive but maybe this was part of the issue with their firmware updates. It could’ve mistakenly caused issues with limiting the amount of acceptable watts. Coincidentally, I’ve always only used a 5w charger. Never once wirelessly charged or used a charger with higher power delivery. I don’t know that it’s a coincidence that my battery is fine.
    I understand proper measuring rigs adhering to a standard aren’t cheap. Rigs from the likes of GRAS, B&K, and Head Acoustics cost thousands of dollars. Heck, the B&K 5128 can be 10s of thousands of dollars. Just crazy. I’m just sayin that the results for your ANC graphs, for example, don’t look anything like what we see on SoundGuys (B&K 5128) and RTINGS (HMS II.3). Advanced users know that these results and info are rather useless. If a measuring rig isn’t simulating the anatomical structure and acoustic load of a human ear, the results simply can not be at all meaningful. I really think it would be so much better to use data from sources who do use this kind of equipment like SoundGuys, RTINGS, AREGINA, 0DiBi, Crinacle, etc. As an example, your ANC results show that the XM4 attenuates more in the very low and highest frequencies. Other results show the complete opposite in that the XM5 outperforms their predecessor in this region. The overall shape and amount of attenuation for various regions is also very off compared to others.
    Side note: Try cutting 400hz aside from just clear bass if you want to reduce your perception of muddiness. If you look at measurements from SuperReview’s Squig, for example. You can actually compare and see how the equalizer behaves for the XM4. You can look at stock tuning vs. excited preset vs. bass boost preset. Excited is the only one of these three that cuts 400hz by 1. And so by comparing this to stock tuning, you can see that cutting 400hz affects a decently wide area below 400hz. These are the frequencies where muddiness is. Clear bass, as you can see, has a center frequency somewhere around 50-60hz. Even though it does appear to have a low Q factor, it doesn’t boost or cut any frequencies high enough to get into that muddy range. That’s what the 400hz band is for. Of course, we have to make educated guesses since we don’t know what Q factors are used for each band. But by comparing presets like this, you can make some excellent educated guesses. And of course, the XM5 would behave extremely similar considering the presets are the same and even sound signature is extremely similar.

    • @imwhatsnew
      @imwhatsnew  Год назад +2

      Hey, thanks a bunch. So, a couple of things. I actually mentioned in a video discussing this that my ANC measurements are not accurate in isolation but are consistently useful and quite representative of anc performance when comparing multiple iems on the same rig. While the stated noise reduction values may not match, that of sound guys (remember various publications themselves dont match each others findings), the overall trend of noise reduction is very similar to that of soundguys' results(or others ) in most cases. Of course, variations do exist. This is why i usually cover difference in broad strokes or mids and highs withiut concentrating on any small (narrow band) peaks and dips. Additionally, until recently my measurements were no good under 120hz and beyond 7khz ..this has since been resolved( for under 120hz..above 7khz my rig simply cannot have accuracy )..so the xm4 was on the old measuring apparatus and the xm5 on the new one..this is why I never mention that region in any video but taking your impression on board perhaps I should just gate the resulting graphs for clarity.
      As for eq, I actually do know what the sliders do because for every measurement I show there are usually about 10-30 measurements I don't show which involves me finding out what the scope of the onboard eq is. This would bore my audience if I showed it so instead I just give recommended eq settings instead ...more yt audience friendly. (Though I have thrown nuggets of info from my data in various other reviews which show some on board eq to be all but useless box ticking exercises on the manufacturers part ;)) I always appreciate the feedback though and I'm glad you came back to watch some more videos :)

    • @Triple-6
      @Triple-6 Год назад +1

      @@imwhatsnew You’re right and I did neglect to acknowledge that it can be useful when comparing IEMs from the same rig, even if not the most accurate. In the sense that you can say one has more/ less this or that over another. And the frequency response measurement actually looked similar enough to others out there. If that was yours, I’d be super interested in a Technics EAH-AZ80 review. I can’t seem to find a single measurement of these. And they seem to be a top tier earbud overall. I remember you did a review for an older Technics earbud and didn’t really like them. I feel like these could redeem the company lol.
      And thank you for responding to my ridiculously long message haha. I didn’t realize how long it was ‘till it was said and done but was like fuck it, might as well post it.
      I wanted to say I remember a video where you filmed it in a style where you were moving along, like one scene to the next. Maybe the previous XM4 earbuds or Sony Linkbuds S? Sounds familiar. And the older Technics one, you were driving I think. I know that might not be too safe lol. But I just wanted to stress how cool this style is. I don’t see it often. I’ve watched many, many videos like these. Yours definitely stands out in that style. I know it isn’t easy, and filming and editing is A LOT of work in and of itself. So maybe just once in a while. But those style of videos are so good! Maybe one for the EAH-AZ80? lol alright I’ll stop now haha. Thanks again man, take care!

    What I really want to know is if you can use both the left and right buds independently. With the mk4, I can only use the right on its own. The mk4 cannot use only the left.
    I suspect that is the reason for the battery imbalance, they always want the left to die first, since you can’t use it if the right dies.

    XM5's have bigger diaphragms so I'd expect (and believe I experience) better bass and/or better battery life (due to reduced degree of bass EQ/overdriving).

    Came across your review. I own the XM5 and have never had better earbuds than these! I've tried them side by side with the Bose QC Buds II, and the Airpods Pro 2. To me the XM5 has better noise cancelling, yes I know the Bose cancel out more noise, but when I wear them I get a terrible pressurized feeling. The soung quality on both the Bose and the Airpods sound more tinny and hollow than the XM5 and also don't have the signature Sony bass! As for the shaking in the ear, I totally agree, It is annoying, but is not as bad as you make out, it doesn't disturb me much. Instead of focusing on the minor ''flaws'', how about speaking all the amazing parts of these earbuds, which I'll gladly tell you about! Both the Bose and the Airpods have flaws which you didn't talk about. People watching your review might think that these earbuds are terrible!🤔

      @@imwhatsnew Not sure what battery drain you're talking about... The earbuds last for me as Sony says. Personally I don't use them for running, so for me these tips are more comfortable, provide a better seal, and keep the earbuds from slipping out of my ears. BTW when you're comparing a product with another product, you don't just mention the good parts about the comparing product... It was as if the whole point of the review was trying to prove that the XM5 Doesn't compare to the Bose and Airpods.🙂

    • @imwhatsnew

      @ShaiTheGreatGuy the asymmetric battery drain was the issue ...this is a well documented issue on sony earbuds. The fit is not just about you, just because you don't run as much doesn't mean it isn't relevant. As for a comparison, this is not a comparison.. only a few points of comparison were provided for context on a couple of things. I get that you like the product and it's obvious I like it but it's obvious that it has a couple of issues that the viewer ought to know about...I've highlighted both good and not so good. I like my mx5 but there is one big flaw for me with them. I wear them when going to bed. I will remove them before falling to sleep but I don't always have the case at hand. You cannot turn them off without the case and in the morning they have ran out of battery. I don't think the battery will last long in this kind of conditions, drained daily.

    Should i get

      Apart from tuning differences, a wired set that is tuned well will likely have more detail overall. Tuning wise, the sony is quite bass boosted and etymotics usually aren't....etymotics tend to be darker sounding in the treble also.

    I really believe that Sony are taking the P calling these buds noise cancelling. They simply don’t work very well. Good sound, but for the same money I could buy a great set of wired IEMs, have better sound and probably have better passive noise cancelling than Sonys ANC.

    1. So, Sony lied about the battery life. Five hours isn't even close to eight hours.
    2. The fit doesn't hold the buds firmly during exercise.
    3. The buds don't work well for phone calls in noisy environments.
    4. I don't like speak-to-chat functions. I had it in my Samsung buds. Like you, it constantly switched on when I didn't want it to.
    5. The four-tap volume control is incredibly stupid. Changing volume is the most used function on earbuds.
    6. Sony's batteries on the XM5s have reports of losing most of the battery function in a year if you use the earbuds every day.
    7. The Bose QC II Ultra earbuds have superior ANC
    8. The Bose QC II transparency mode is better than the Sony XM5s.
    9. I am betting that the immersive mode on the Bose QC II outperforms the Sony XM5s by quite a margin.

      How can there be reportes of them losing power after a year when they haven't been out for a year?

    • @DavidEsp1
      @DavidEsp1 7 месяцев назад

      The four-tap is unbelievable self-sabotage. Truly weird. Can't even reassign it to "spare" fewer-taps. But at least after those first four taps, if you continue tapping at a fast rate, it continues to change with each of those single additional taps. Mad though!

    • @franklong6269
      @franklong6269 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@DavidEsp1 Wow, that would just drive me crazy. I own the Bose QC II Ultra earbuds and I have to tap three times to repeat a song - and I really don't like tapping my earbuds that much. Fortunately, with the Bose, you can lightly tap the earbuds so it doesn't hurt your ears so much.
      The Bose QC Ultra earbuds would be the perfect earbuds if they had multipoint connection. That is their only major weakness.

Since the mark version xm 3 till 5, their noise cancelling, transparency, sound and extra features + Price tag are just marketing bullshit 🙄 😑. Sony need to have a much better product quality control and product design on their ear fit. Sony also need to fix their Bluetooth connection dropping out all the time
