- 16 hours of time lapse video condensed into 60 seconds, you actually see the rust falling off of metal drill bits while soaking in only vinegar.
Please note that I cleaned the case before putting the drill bits back.

I tried this and it worked. I've done all the tools in my garage that rusted when the roof leaked over the winter. Only a very few tools need a second go. Thanks for such an excellent tip
Excellent!
I’m going to try this on an loaded gun that water fell on the slide is stuck closed I’m the with on blaster!
@gergő pödör Doesn't matter, works with any type of vinegar.
Sorry about the bad music everyone -- that was one of my first videos. I have learned my lesson. :-)
Hi, what is the first music?
WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE SECOND SONG. IVE BEEN DYING TO KNOW I HEAR IT BUT SHAZAM HAS NO IDEA WHICH SONG IT IS!!
Alley Picked its still great. Before clicking on the vid, i was expecting you to have like 3,000,000 subscribers. this video is amazing. keep up the great work.
GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR SOUL
the music was fine..
For those saying he didn’t clean the box, he did but that box is made of plastic so the rust from the metals won’t come out easy, it’s not some kind of stainless steal box that you can just wipe off.
Exactly. I did wash it thoroughly. It's just stained badly.
Alley Picked yea I know bud, u can’t clean a plastic with a metal rust without scrubbing it hard and soaking it with some cleaning agents and it’s not worth the effort. I don’t why some ppl seems to be bothered by it, it’s not like u r putting ur sandwich in it, it’s a tool box, it’s normal to be a little dirty
Use bar keepers friend on it (liquid) will come off the box
He could have dipped it in vinegar for 16 hours.
Why does every time lapse I see have to make it sound like I'm traveling through space or some shit

Good job of cleaning and protecting with the oil. I've heard that vinegar would remove rust, but had never tried it. Now I've got some rusted tools that will get the vinegar treatment. Thanks for sharing.
Found my hedge clippers out behind the garage. Of course they are rusted. I need them to cut down locust saplings. So glad I found your channel. Thanks so much. Now I need to put them in the garage not behind it.
This is why I never drive my Jeep through a white vinegar puddle.
"Smart" ;)
😂
I can see the tires just rolling away on their own lmao
😂😂
the only thing stopping you from every motorists dream
Should have sharpened them again, all the sharp edges were rusted away and subsequently more dulled by the vinegar.
Not really dulled by the rust -- I have used them without sharpening. The rust was surface and didn't do much to dull the bits.
motor oil protects the tools
Kandi Klover you fucking moron wd40 is a lubricant.
Austin Massey WD40 is a dissolvent not a lubricant.
Kandi Klover you must mot work around alot of machineries? All of the millwrights and mechanics that i have had the pleasure of working with, did this same thing... ive seen tools over 40 yrs old... shit this is how my tools have stayed rust free for 12+ years... shouldnt get angry at things you have no idea about?
Please note that the case is stained due to the rust. It is washed clean. It will not cause the metal to rust again.
Hello guys iam intrest is water
Why not bathe the box in vinegar to get the rust stains off and perhaps use a small brush ? I like the time lapse idea. Thanks for an informative video
I was wondering that lol. Thanks - Good job!
Alley Picked : I love vinegar! I make homemade weed killer: undiluted vinegar, 1 tbsp. liquid dish soap, 1 tbsp. Epsom salt. Works great!
Alley Picked 👻
Good job but forgot to clean the box!!
So food touched it?
Art C, yeah, and I was going to say that too.
Well he did rub em in motor oil also so he's probably a dumb fuck. Cut him some slack.
iTheGeek oil cleans, prevents rusts and lucricates diy tools.
Kandi Klover hahahahahah seriously?
Nice demonstration. When you rinse though you should add some baking soda to the rinse water to neutralize any remaining acid in the washed off vinegar. Agree, vinegar is a very good inexpensive rust remover.

My grandson borrowed my tools a while back, & I specifically told him NOT to leave them out in the rain. Of course, he didn't listen.(He also lost a few small sockets) I used a wire wheel to clean them as best I could. I did oil them up, tho'. Maybe I'll try the vinegar now. The blow molded case(Craftsman) was pretty much ruined, I thought. Maybe I'll try some vinegar on it, also.
NOBODY takes care of your tools as well as you do. I stopped lending years ago. Got tired of having my almost brand new tools come back (IF they came back) looking beat up.
I use to do this a long time ago. I am hesitant to try again though. I might be a little rusty.

Vinegar will not weaken the steel or the case hardening on it. The rust will however, so the damage is already done
As you say, it's not an issue with low speed spade drill bits intended only for wood

Used this method on a pair of side cut pliers, which have been frozen for a couple of years, last week. Worked great. And these things had been locked up for years.
Thank you. It made a great change from watching paint dry.
I was just going to write exactly what you said, so I scrolled the messages, and found yours.I won't do it now!
I found an interestingly shaped Kukri/cleaver looking machete in my yard last week, gonna soak it in vinegar this weekend and clean it up and make myself a restored custom bushwacker and a handle ha ha.
Well done. Thanks for taking the trouble to shoot this video.
Thanks, I am going to put all my rusty stuff in vinegar. I never knew it cleaned rust so well until I saw your video.
Rust removal with acid is a simple, school-level chemistry reaction: iron oxide + acid = iron salt + water. Iron salt of most acids is soluble, so rust "dissolves". Most other metal oxides are removable the same way.
The downside is that (non-rusted) iron also reacts with acid (unlike some less-active metals like copper which don't), producing iron salt and hydrogen. The bubbles on the tools surfaces in the video is that hydrogen. Basically, this inflicts a tiny bit of more damage to the parts. Because of this, rust removal with acids should not be prolonged above than the necessary minimum.
Denys Vlasenko That’s why proprietary rust-removing chemicals can actually be safer for iron than vinegar. They can also be used repeatedly, unlike vinegar which is basically single use.
If you’re de-rusting large items it’s better to use rust remover, since you don’t want to be flushing your home pipes with 30 gallons of vinegar anyway.
In other words this is a neutralisation reaction.
So satisfying! Been doing this with my car parts and love seeing the results!
Do you think it would do too much dmg to the rubber parts, like on the suspension control arms? Asking in the case you've done any of those parts yet
@@junior21255 I probably wouldn't try it with rubber/bushings on the parts. I've thought the same thing but I wouldn't take the chance. The acid can eat/degrade rubber and if anything will decrease the longevity of the rubber parts.
Enjoyed this, I'm now wondering why I'm bothering with electrolysis 😂
Watching this reminded me of the WW II "mend and make do" philosophy that prevailed until the latter part of the 20th century. Things weren't thrown away; if at all possible, they were repaired or refurbished.
I liked the music to be honest, seemed like time travel, which it was sort of
Thanks, I done the vinegar only before but never put the oil on, resulting in it not working ,so will do the 3 parts in the video.
Thank you
Would this work for my skills?
Chris Lang Are you volunteering yourself?
Best comment...lol
Awesome! Tip. When uing vinagar to clen any kind of patina from metal, always rinse with baking soda water to nuetralize the vingar.
Clean tools place back in a dirty box. Still awesome vid. Thx
Says in the description he cleaned the box.. I guess it was just stained and couldn't amend the discoloration
Now that's what i call a resourceful guy...well done!
Don't forget to neutralize!
hence the water bath it washes off the vinegar then all you have to do is just dry them off with a rag
Surely that doesn't properly neutralise it. I was taught to use a water/baking soda (or something alkaline) mix afterwards to make the metal ph neutral again so it lasts properly
The vinegar tends to promote a layer of "black rust" which will be neutral and prevent further corrosion anyway.
Thank you, I had no idea that you can oil to the tool, just simple car oil. 🐾🐾🐾❤️
a quick polish after the vinegar would have made them shine!
Bought a set of 30 carbide tipped router bits that had been through a fire, got wet and rusted. Gonna try this today.
I am asking this question on behalf of the box, "why don't clean me?" :)
The time-lapse makes this Vid' especially useful - Thanks :)
I can smell the vinegar right through the screen....
Oh wait, I'm in the kitchen marinating fish😅

I used white vinegar to clean my chain mail and it worked perfectly. 1 day in a bath of it and a jet wash afterwards and it's like new.
I find a lot of the comments in regards to this video indicate a lack of maturity, integrity and intelligence.
I hate to insult any of my viewers but I've noticed the same thing :-)
Welcome to RUclips comments. ;-) I get some good laughs reading comments on youtube everyday and see the 1st grade mentality of many.
Welcome to RUclips! Enjoy your stay.
girlonlaptop To be fair, a lot of the commenters probably still are in elementary school. You can’t blame a 7-year-old for acting like a 7-year-old.
And possibly even extremism
One brilliant idea , I'll keep this in mind, thanks for sharing.. you've rust proof it and gave it a good vintage Bettina look...
Watching rust fall off is like watching grass grow or ice melt or paint dry. Not in a bad way though. In a good way
(Beware the expense', I bet he used $0.10cents worth of vinegar?) ;) Great+useful video particularly the time-lapse, obviously vinegar can be used on everything from a rusting barbecue to a rusting chain. very insightful. John, Perth, Australia.
This was one of those 'oddly satisfying' things...
Unbelievably satisfying to watch.
This is satisfying AF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i have a large sonic cleaner, its soooooo satisfying to stick stuff in there for hours, and when its starting to work its magic hit the button and watch it all explode off of your nice clean parts
Interesting but I think RUclips is desperately trying to find different things to put on my recommended list 😁 Ooo up next Cast iron restoration
I have more interesting videos. Not sure why RUclips keeps recommending that one but I'll take it. :-) Thanks for watching.

I did this with fruit vinegar and it worked. I had to mix WD-40 with hydraulic oil for protecting bolts and the smell.
My brain for some reason: Drink it
I dont think vinegar with rust is good, only if you have an iron defficency🤣
I like that you show how long but wish you also had a counter for this like a count down or up.
Who else sees the face in the rust when he rubs the tools with oil

2022 - still using vinegar for flea market tools, usually just surface rust, picked up for pennies. Sometimes after cleaning I'll put them in a tumbler for a little polishing. Look almost new.
wow very cool i have heard regular coke a cola takes off rust too lol
perch077 that's because carbonated drinks are very acidic
I know this really works because I did the same thing with my very rusty hammer and pliers. Came out really good.

Hahaha, funny as
Didnt know you eat with spade dril bits damn you must have a strong tongue cause those things are sharp and will cut the shit out of ya
Lol , I've just been watching paint dry
Great job in cleaning them....and then you put them back into the dirty box.
3:37 lets just put this in the bunch of shit that I'll never touch again
You know that vinegar not only cleaned the items, but also disinfects it somewhat (maybe not perfectly, but hey, use alcohol for the rest).
60 seconds of satisfying footage
Less than $10 for almost complete bit set, deal to me.
A lot of people think rusty tools aren't any good so you can get great deals. Then clean it up
Alley picked, that's neat, I didn't know vinegar would work. However, you can get way better results in 15 - 20 minutes doing the same process with muratic acid. It's available at most hardware stores and it pretty cheap, typically about $5 a gallon. It will get it back to shiny metal.
When you buy $2 rusted spade bits but you also own vinager
A longer lasting final rust stopper is PTFE, Tri-Flo has PTFE as well as Super Lube the new WD-40 with PTFE and others including Liquid Wrench and PB BLASTER, it must be listed on the product. This will work better than oil to keep rust away longer. PTFE I was told was developed during the second world war to keep chemicals (don't know specifically) used in the production of the ATOM BOMB from eating away the inside of the vats they were stored in.
Thanks for the tip!
Lmao at the end there I thought I’d be seeing the new season of dragrace cast revealed or something xD
Thanks for your video. I never knew vinegar cleared rust off metal. Tried it on a bbq i had tbat parts were going rusty so i kept bathing it in vinegar as i couldn't soak the parts in a bath and pretty much back to new metal again
When you put thte vinegar at the container I literally just smelled a vinegar in real life
I see people in the comments of this and similar videos asking what kind of vinegar to use.
The answer is White Distilled Vinegar. The same white vinegar you see in the grocery store. Also at some hardware stores you can buy a more potent white vinegar that has a higher percentage than the typical 4-6% grocery store variety. White Spirit vinegar can be up to 20% or more strength (the percentage represents the acetic acid which is what is removing the rust).Lastly, it wasn't shown in this video and other videos but after the rust soak and the water and scrubbing you should mix a few teaspoons of baking soda with water in a container and let it soak ten minutes. Vinegar (acetic acid) is obviously an acid, while baking soda is a base which neutralized the acid. Remember, the acetic acid from the vinegar penetrates into the metal and will continue to do its thing eating away slowly and can cause pitting and can leave a dull ugly grey patina ( not the good patina that comes with age) and the baking soda neutralizes the vinegar helping to prevent that. One more thing. I would recommend boiled linseed oil over motor oil. BLO is a tried and true oil that has been used on a number of materials for years.
Thanks for your comments. You might find another vinegar video I did also interesting.

@@AlleyPicked already watched it lol. Thank you
You should have cleaned the inside of the box too.
I so got irritated by putting clean tools in dirty box I so wanted to go through my phone and do it before he puts them in :/
He cleaned the box, but didnt show that process, dork
Thanks. You made watching rust fall off interesting.
Human logic: rust come from water so i will put my un-rusted metal into water
I watched to the end i know you dry it this is only a joke
I disassembled a coaster wagon to restore and power brushed all I that I could. I have the parts soaking in vinegar and hoping most of the rust will be removed in the little nooks I couldn't get. If everything works out, I'll rinse in a bath of baking soda and water and dry. Then primer and paint. If I could afford a good sand blaster, I wouldn't have to mess with vinegar.
Good idea. There is also a good product they sell at home depot called, "Klean Strip Metal and concrete prep". It turns rust into Iron Phosphate overnight, then it can be painted. Just another option :-)
Why did the News channel start broadcasting at 0:29? 😂 In all serious tho cool vid
Yeah, it does sound like a newscast opening theme.
Have used molasses for this purpose (old school) and plain white sugar but it generally takes a few days to get that type of result, perhaps because the sugar has to start to ferment and become acidic. Thanks for sharing.
Don't throw the used vinegar away. It'd taste lovely on fish and chips with bits.
Not bad for $2 and twenty five cents worth of vinegar. Thanks for sharing.

vinegar is amazing. Good call on the gloves!
The box it came in is rusty :(
Chris Thomson "stained by the tools" - with rust ..
I think, what he also meant to say, its that the guy on the video is putting the tools back in a rusty case
Works on all metals , recommend washing with high pressure hose /cleaner , use a light wire wheel in a drill hi speed and polish clean the part ,,then I use clean engine oil and thinners ,shake well , poor over part or use a rag , 'this will preserve the metal , hope that helps with your restoration project .
