- Toyota Sienna Water Pump replacement
The water pump went out shortly after changing the oil cooler O ring. We had been hearing the rattle for some time but thought it was the AC pulley or Idler pulley but I don't have a scope to pinpoint it. I was actually planning to do that the following weekend but life decided to speed up the process on the way home from work one day.
My gear:
I use the Audio Technica AT2020 XLR because I wanted to be able to record music occasionally. If you do not need that then you could just go straight for the USB version and wouldn’t need the phantom power or extra cables. The external recorder is a must when using a cell phone and will help with audio sync when editing.

XLR to USB cable: amzn.to/29YBoUW
XLR Microphone cable: amzn.to/29YCe4g

Thanks for this video. Explains exactly what I need to remove to access the pump. I have 320,000 on my ‘07 Sienna and trying to get it to 400,000 😁
Just finished the job on our Sienna, thank you for the video! It helped me a lot.
Very good and so kind to take time to help others. God bless you.
Beats the 1-1/2 hour videos. All i need to know, thanks!
more informative than the rest of the videos on here for a sienna water pump !
Very useful thank you so much 2007 Toyota Sienna Limited I have.
Thanks for the vid my goal is 300k people have said that's crazy glad to see your going to hit 400
thanks for the upload. the same problem with a 2017 sienna.
? How many miles on it?
My 2012 with 250k miles still okay.
My toyota sienna water pump fail 52k miles making a terrible noise
Good work btw
M . E . Teruel same problem, the noise is very annoying.
I wish you would’ve shown how you got the second part of that engine mount out. There’s a bolt that’s impossible to remove
Thanks for the video! I've got the same wiggly water pump pulley. My first symptom was a shredded belt, though. She didn't get a chance to overheat.
I am at 301,000 and would like to see it hit 600,000 like another video I seen
Hey guys, for those Toyota Sienna under 5 yrs or 100k km, make sure go back to check with your dealership to see if it’s under warranty, I have been told it’s covered by the dealership in Canada. Goodluck
Hello . Thanks for the great videos and recommendations . I have a 2008 XLE sienna with 170k miles that needs a front wheel Bearing, front sway links and rear shocks and 4 wheel alignment. Total of $1000. You think it’s worth fixing . Everything else with the vehicle is in great shape . Owned the car since new … thanks
We replaced wheel bearings a couple times... if it were my car for sure. But that choice would have to be yours spend $1000 to fix it or $10,000+ for another vehicle????
Great answer! Plus, its a Toyota! They're always worth fixing!
Maybe I missed it in the video but how many hours did it take you to do the job
Great job. So one thing that will help everyone out, it’s advised to take the nut off both lower engine mounts driver front and passenger rear via wheel well. Then you jack up 3-4 inches for the clearance on getting pulley off of water pump. Just sharing is caring
Where did you put the jack at ? Just curious
@@jackshirley8750 you get a block of wood and you jack upwards on bottom of oil pan but make sure it’s a block of wood that covers all corners or it’ll crush oil pan
I was curious how much work into that. Looks like a pain in the butt job. I was quoted a lot of money at a local mechanic. It explains why, crazy and a stupid design. Our 2011 sienna has 213k on it. No issues with the pump yet. No idea on the last time it was replaced.
Thank you! Was that the 1st time your Sienna needed a water pump replaced? I'm on the verge of buying a 2009 Sienna w/ 91,000. Same design as your 2007. One selling point is that it has a timing chain, like yours, so no belt to replace. But it seems like replacing the water pump would be just as pricey. Just curious about longevity.
Was that an original water pump? I have heard a rattle on my 2007 sienna but i am not sure if its the waterpump. The sound has been there for several years since we bought it with 175k it currently has 245k. I plan to replace the pump this fall since i know its original.
I’m in the middle of replacing one on an 07 , it started with a rattle, soon after it started leaking a bit. I would wake up to a small puddle below the WP. Then, full blown spewing of fluid and overheating.
Added tips: loosen bolts on WP with belt still on. I didn’t, used channel locks to hold it. Not fun.also, there’s a 10mm nut next to the lower bolt on the coolant housing. You can’t see it and it too close to the housing to get anything on it to loosen it. I used an open box wrench and had to use one hand feeling for it. That drove me nuts. Good luck!
I am planning to replace my water pump too on my Sienna too, did you have to jack up the engine to remove the water pump
No you can do it without jack
@@BigRedFishDad thanks
Most videos and guides say you have to take the lower and front motor mount bolts off as well and jack up the engine to access the pump, it doesn't look like you did that, is it not necessary?
Nope i did not.
Did you ever have to change your chain or chain guides?
No i did not
Did you have to raise the engine in order to access the water pump
Not on that one but I just did the one on our 2014 and it was a lot harder those two long bolts would not come out unless you clear the wheel well
Ok thank you I have a 2013 so prob gonna have to lift the engine. Gonna try to clear it by removing the tire and opening up the wheel well thank you so much God bless
This was not helpful im having trouble getting the last bolt out of the motor mount bracket brake lines block it from coming out
If the car was driven hot for about 10 minutes-ish, do you think there is further damage to the motor? All of the coolant had come out of the car, by the time my son got home. We had just taken it to the mechanic and he said there were no error codes, but the check engine light was on. The oil was changed along with a wheel alignment and it was driven home. When my son got it home, I saw that the coolant was coming out of the car and temp gauge was as high as it could go on hot. Thank you.
Find a new mechanic
My mechanic told me that my 05 sienna is overheating because the water pump is bad, but it only overheats while the engine is idling. How can the water pump still seem to work while the car is moving but not while idling? Help is appreciated
Air going through radiator provides cooling when you're moving. Not when parked though.
How did you get the WP out without lifting the motor? I’ve been trying to get it out for 6 hours and counting.
I don't fully remember but I think I had to remove the idler pulley and a couple other items.
hey rich how did you get yours out?
Have you retired it yet? If not how many miles is it up to now. the 2007 and newer siennas with 3.5s or any toyota equipped with 3.5s had water pump issues some seen thier fail around 30 to 40 thousand miles. I am suprised you got that kind of mileage out of yours. was that a factory pump
408K now! Hopefully she keeps going good until after March sometime...(knocking on wood!!!)
@@BigRedFishDad nice got 170,000 on a 2011 sienna but, I guess compared to yours thats not even broke in yet. I do have another question is it using oil. Do you plan to get another van or car or whatever around March or you going to keep running this one til it flat out gives up. Sometime if you could and want too you ought to start it up on camera and show the mileage on it.
We have been considering the Highlander... Car guy on WOAI radio swears by them and I have a few co-workers that own one and love them. They also will pull 5000lbs from what I have read. But honestly we just keep driving this van until it dies. I can't believe it was only at 375K when I changed out the water pump. It seems like a year ago in my time. I thought I put a video up of it hitting 400K I'll have to look it was probably one of the vlogs.
@@BigRedFishDad you might of probably ought to look at that myself. Would you be considering a new highlander or newer used. If you get a v6 highlander most of them you will find are v6 its pretty much the same motor as you got here in this sienna except being that it was totally redone a couple years ago or so. Dont know if they still do but, they did offer the highlander with a slightly larger four cylinder than what you would find in a camry myself if I was shopping for highlander I would definitley pick a v6 model my personal opinion its too much vehicle for a four cylinder option. I will tell you one thing though in 2011 and 2012 you could get a sienna with a 2.7 four banger I believe it is the same as the four banger for the highlander I mentioned above however after a couple years of the third generation sienna its my understanding they discontinued it for the sienna and all siennas since have a got a v6 and to my knowledge all siennas prior to that little time had a v6 also.
idk... but I would never buy a 4 for anything other than a small car. We had a caravan once and it just sucked!...the highlander switched to the same motor as I have in 2008 went from 3.3 to the 3.5. I am pretty sure that is what we are going to get and no we will never buy brand new again. Just too much money when there are so many 3 year old car sitting unwanted lonely in the lots :)
When I removed my waterpump on our 08 xle I see what looks like grey rtv on the larger bolts... did you use blue loctite threadlocker on the 2 bolts and grey rtv on the others? thanks
I don't recall using any sealer or loctite.
Well I heard you say what you were going to do but I didn't see you doing something, maybe you didn't even do it... remember that we have been finding out how to do it, not to listen blah blah blah blah . I just wast my time
