cyberpunk RED is _super_ simple to play! pretty fun too. Starfinder is a refined Pathfinder in space, so that should absolutely appeal. shadowrun is very good, but that learning curve is scary.
Holy heck, where did you come from? It's only your third video and you are knocking it out of the park. Instant sub on my part. I can't wait to see how you bring this energy to non-D&D TTRPGs. It's a niche criminally underserved.
You're a true gentleman. I'll do me best to keep the laughs comin' and represent those other TTRPGs. Looks like I've got plenty of your content to catch up on!!
I disagree that D&D is the worst option out there. There are some good reasons to play it. However, I 100% approve of you trying to get people to branch out and try other TTRPGs as D&D is only one option among many. I'm currently running as system that incorporates elements from 5E, DCC, and Shadowdark.
@@DexSaveDan well i've had some trouble with it so here are the basics: there are 6 stats, each of which has a correlative strength, craft, will, life, luck, and control. strength correlates with life, craft correlates with luck, and will correlates with control. you roll a d4 for each stat. on a 1, you get a 2. on a 4, you get a 4. all other rolls are 3. if you roll an extreme value on the correlated stat, you add or subtract 1 from the roll respectively so that it has a 50% chance of giving the same number. life allows you to not die. luck allows you to reroll dice, and control allows you to make decisions your charachter wouldn't. stat checks use a d6 test, and combat is a competition. there are sabotage mechanics. i will see if i can share it in any way.
Frank Mentzer's "red box" D&D basic set from 1983 is still, in may opinion, the best way for a noob to learn TTRPG's (or pen-n-paper RPGs as they were once called, or just RPG's as we called them before those three letter came to be so strongly associated with videogames) -- though, if your on budget and want more than a PDF there's Basic Fantasy.
So, complete noobs, no experience whatsoever. Red box?

Sometimes the algorithm is good. I hit that Subscribe Button after the "finger that gnome" line! Looking forward to waht you come up with next - I only got 28 years or so of experience with TTRPGs so there is still so much to learn!!
Although Chainmail was arguably more of a skirmish miniatures game, rather than a TTRPG of any sort. You can almost make the same argument for D&D though, I guess.
This is fantastic! Guess I have a new benchmark to live up to! Also, hell yes, so glad to see ttrpgs outside of D&D being promoted. It's a big world out there, and there are many many options. 💚🔥
What is a TTRPG? It's like playing cops and robbers, only you've got rules and dice to settle things when I'm yelling "Got you!" and you're yelling "Nah, you missed!"
I've run 2 campaigns in D&D 5e. Both lasted a couple years. I made it very clear at the end of the last campaign that I am never touching 5e again, even as a player. That's time I could be spending playing something more fun. There's plenty to choose from out there, and lots of them are even free like Mausritter and Tricube Tales. Both great games.
All I need to role game, is a bunch of dice, a dm screen and a table and chairs for me and the players. The player describes their ideal PC, I write some notes. The players get comfortable and I proceed to describe everything. My plan, to have fun. That includes everyone also having fun. Occasionally I seek random result, I roll some dice. The players only need to speak their wishes and choices. They get comfy, because all they need is to speak their choices. No PC sheet, no dice, nothing. I am fortunate, 1. I have an incredible imagination, 2. I've seen so many RPGs, 3. I'm a writer, making up fiction is like breathing to me. Commercialy products only exist, because someone wishes to sell them, and some don't have my imagination and training. I can make a person 'feel' like they are playing just any RPG without actually running it.
@@slacbladder well it's my parents fault, I was born this way :), I mean, it's exhausting some days, but oh well :) And yes, I sometimes wonder if I'm actually a chat AI as well. I kinda sound like it occasionally.
:-P and while it is the biggest RPG in the world... it didn't really catch up in Germany. Even though we had the red box and even two of the "expansion" boxes back then, but since TSR wanted more royalties for the translation from Schmidt Spiele (the biggest board game publisher in Germany back then), Schmidt Spiele said: FUCK IT and gave the guys who were translating the first boxes approx 3 month or so to make a "German RPG" which had to be AS MUCH DIFFERENT to D&D as possible (so ability scores were named differently, the combat was different, the armor class worked as "damage reduction" and so on). And since Schmidt Spiele had the power to do they told all vendors who wanted to sell the popular boardgames from them that they HAD to stock "Das Schwarze Auge" (The dark eye) as it was called so you could find it EVERYWHERE. Even during the late 90s early 00s you only could find D&D stuff in larger Fantasy Stores. Most other toy or boardgame stores had DSA modules (we have SOOOO many modules) and supplements. Which was funny for me when i first read about D&D in 2001 or so when i played Baldurs Gate 1. I found the rules (AD&D) kinda confusing and never had seen a D&D book. THat came way later in 2003 or so when i was into Yu-Gi-Oh and we played in a larger city which had a large fantasy store. By that time i already played DSA and had the starter box for several years :D Also: Great video !!!
You are welcome friend. Generally, good vibes in the comments so far. Not a lot of hate, just some good informative suggestions. Could be a little more steamy though, you know what I mean?
Not gonna lie, watched this video yesterday, after eating a very organic brownie, and the dancig "action figure" totalling freak me out... I was like: wait, is the motherf*** skeletor dancing??? 😂😅 Very cool video, btw. Rewatching it now! And I also love your "d100 Bingo Q/A" awesome! I vote for giving the 91-100 TTRPG names, like 91 "A Dwarvish Mine" idk hehe
My friends and I have used the Vampire character sheets for homebrew super hero campaigns bc the dot system is so easy. Thats how we introduce newbies to ttrpg's usually. We are currently running 2 campaigns. One we are the good guys and the other we are the bad guys. We're essentially playing against ourselves and its been brutal. We also play a lot of DnD. We also throw in some Rifts here and there. But with the Vampire dot system its so easy to create your own game and world based on that system. And no, it doesn't have to be about Vampires lol
What, not about Vampires? You've blown my mind!! Like those little blue coagulant injections in Blade that make the vampires explode. Sorry, I've bought the conversation back to Vampires again. Apologies.
A lot of interesting games to try. Shadow of the Demon Lord, or Shadow of the Weird Wizard which is nearly released both make for a great alternative directly to 5e. Stuff like Old School Essentials is pretty great if you want something very close to the old way of doing things what with that "side initiative" where actions happen at different points of a round. Adventurer, Conqueror, King and its upcoming sequel take the old school feel in a different direction. Really focusing on the idea that you aren't a bunch of murderhobos forever, and eventually you become rulers. Also pretty good if you like having a realistic economy.
I feel that if I said "you aren't a bunch of murderhobos" while describing a game to my group they would say "but we aren't murderhobos" ........ really? Come on lads.
@@DexSaveDan Honestly even with Weird Wizard coming out, it's why I so much enjoy Shadow of the Demon Lord. Not only because of the darker tone of things, but because there are mechanical consequences to being a murderhobo. Surprising how people suddenly want to be good people when there's a risk of their character growing horrifying (sometimes literally, as that's a trait the more dangerous monsters have) to reflect their souls.
I am working on my own system, and that definition you read there is not even close to what I am trying to do. But yes, I am well aware that I break away from many of the paradigms in the space.
I don't run 5e. I run Paranoia and Pathfinder 2e, but I admit when I am explaining to people who probably don't know anything about TTRPGs I will sometimes just say "I play D&D".
Personally, I love getting new people into storytelling RPGs! PbtA is a great framework that's spawned a bunch of titles, and I find people grok those games well when they don't come in with baggage from games like D&D!
I love the videos. So happy you're talking about other games other then D&D. Ive been so disappointed with what WOTC has done to a game I use to love. Thiers so mant great TTRPG's out there. Thanks for shedding light on them. Keep up the good work. You earned my subscription.
Appreciated! I know WOTC have disappointed everyone, but we are in the luck position that we have loads to choose from!! Like Eddie in the treats section of Pets at Home!!
If you haven't heard of it, HackMaster 5e is a fun game. Don't want to read the book? No problem, the GM and/or another player will always be there to aid you. Admittedly, the combat is a bit active with seconds being used, it is still a fun low magic fantasy system. Aces & Eights is sort of the same thing, just alternate US history wild west... and no magic. Just guns, knives, cannons, etc.
I have the sneaking suspicion that this comment section is gonna be bad for my wallet! MORE TO THE LIST!! Thanks for the recommendation though, I love it! Aces N Eights is also a movie starring the main bloke from Starship Troopers. Looks pants.
@DexSaveDan Yeah, I only played Commander for the first time last year... It's an interesting style. I keep forgetting that's my profile picture, to be honest. Then someone brings it up, and I am like, "Oh yeah, that's right."
Love it. I will die on the same hill haha. You covered this with the perfect amount of seriousness and levity. I will always promote all the other games because there are so many good TTRPGs out there. Great stuff!
Love the energy. I wouldn't mind seeing your take on Shadowrun, to be honest. Especially if you want vitriol in your comments from Shadowrun fans who love/hate the game in its various editions...
Saying D&D is the worst game ever, is like saying Honey Crullers are the worst donuts. Ok, some actually don't like them. Some think nothing beats anything with chocolate. But I think cream filled Maple frosted is in a class of its own. I have nearly every permutation of D&D clone, but, there's really nothing with D&D. Some of the clones are just too pricey. Somer editions of D&D just don't seem to have any restraint on books. But no one has ever held a gun to my head over role gaming choices. I'm 62 and all my role gaming from 30 years ago seems a long time ago, so my role gaming from 50 years ago is even more remote. I've been stuck with solo gaming. So sometimes, the design choice is more about the circumstances and not the design. Warhammer 4th edition FRPG is my personal fav of any design. But the characters really need a specific human to run each PC. Not ideally solo friendly. So it is not relevant how good I think it is. I think AD&D is sliiiightly better than BECMI but Rules Cyclopedia is just one book. Gotta love just one book. But Basic Fantasy Role-Playing Game is a better written 'just one book'. Then there is support gear. If you think the best adventures are AD&D adventures, you might as well go with AD&D. But everyone wants to play 5th. So, nothing saying you can't run 5th as if it was BECMI and just tell the group the 4 original classes and 4 original races is it. BECMI looking with 5th mechanics. Insert comments now about troublesome players. I never game with the troublesome. Cause me trouble and poof yer gone. The DM is in charge of 'fun' at the table and that includes the DM too.
thank god someone else gets it! Most groups are better served by ttrpgs that are either crunchier than D&D or simpler than D&D. D&D is just the worst pick every time, unless you want to specifically play D&D
I'm so glad this was really about not playing D&D the system. Keen to see what systems get reviewed and looked at. ShadowDark and Pathfinder 2e happen to be my current systems in use! Dragonbane is hopefully soon to join my shelf, and hopefully table. Free League products are beautiful.
As always, play what you like and even better play multiple games. That said, i enjoy dnd 5e, and it remains our grouo's favorite game. Although, we are playing DCC Lankmar at the moment along with OSE in a different group.
¿collaborative STORYTELLING? No, adventuring in a Shared Imaginary world. After adventures are done, you can tell yours battles or stories to your non-player friends at the pub.
My go-to game nowadays is EZD6! But freaking love other games: LotFP, OSE, CY_BORG, Death in Space, Black Sword Hack, ICRPG, Whitehack 4E, Pirate Borg and Into the Odd Remastered (and Electric Bastionland by the same creator) to name a few! Have yet to play most of those (already played ICRPG with my family, PB with a group of two and ItO: R only in solo)!
@@DexSaveDan love it, having great fun with it! Completely introduced 2 of my 6 players to the hobby with it and my campaign is going great! If you ordered from Runehammer, I did too because I couldn't resist the new books (especially the bundle) and was waiting for Wasted World for so freaking long! My PoD books will be for the players
The problem 5e has that none of the other simple systems have is; DnD is a strict constructionist game that has been stripped bare to the point of barely anything being possible, your character is always a strict set of features prechosen for you with barely any choice at all after first level. It has all the downsides of of a crunchy game with none of the upsides; like immersive mechanics that reflect reality (you can grapple someone and they somehow can still hit you with a halberd?!), tactics, and character building. Theres no reason to play it because its just all the bad of both styles of game, rules heavy and rules light. 1 and 2e players (BECMI and advanced) dont like it because its 'board gamey', 3rd and 4th edition fans dont like it because theres no depth to character creation or the gameplay, ICRPG and Fate fans dont like it because its more complicated with nothing to show for it, it is through and through the worst option.
I guess without a clickbait title it's hard to get noticed. A mate of mine says he's keeping his integrity and not doing clickbait thumbnails on his videos. He gets about 4 views.
I've never heard anyone use D&D as a catch all for tabletop rpgs. Table top rpgs is what everyone calls it that plays them. Someone calling VtM, D&D is like those protoplasmic yobs that call a Lyft an Uber.
@@DexSaveDan 3.5 for me. started with 2nd back in my teens, but 3.0 opened it up to so much larger an audience, and 3.5 corrected a lot of the ambitious mistakes of first release. 4th tried to make TT an MMO, and flopped for it, and 5e is just... Meh Plus 3rd really cracked open the gaming options as a whole thanks to the ogl

Why is it Games Master but not Dungeons Master? I concur, there are better games with fewer "Because I said so" rules. I started with 1E AD&D in 1981, but by 1986 I had played and run 12 other games not published by TSR. Also, the newest edition is not always the best edition.

Looking forward to seeing where your channel goes, Dan!

I can guarantee slight chuckles and eye rolls, inaccurate TTRPG info and the odd spicy take. Glad you enjoyed!
Never occured to me I could play a sci-fi TTRPG. please make a video on that!
Mate, give me some time I'll cover it.
cyberpunk RED is _super_ simple to play! pretty fun too.
Magic system of DCC?
i have actually invented an extremely simplistic ttrpg system all by myself. i am sure i could share it if i had to.
I think you should
@@DexSaveDan well i've had some trouble with it so here are the basics: there are 6 stats, each of which has a correlative strength, craft, will, life, luck, and control. strength correlates with life, craft correlates with luck, and will correlates with control. you roll a d4 for each stat. on a 1, you get a 2. on a 4, you get a 4. all other rolls are 3. if you roll an extreme value on the correlated stat, you add or subtract 1 from the roll respectively so that it has a 50% chance of giving the same number. life allows you to not die. luck allows you to reroll dice, and control allows you to make decisions your charachter wouldn't. stat checks use a d6 test, and combat is a competition. there are sabotage mechanics. i will see if i can share it in any way.

Okay, your humor is great. “Look at how complicated this is”, and then shows the table of contents. (Pretty standard fare, really).
My humour is great, finally some reconciliation.
"finger that gnome" T-shirt? Thoughts? Anything you want me to cover let me know.
Based off of 'Chainmail' AFAIK 1979 😉
There it is!
Although Chainmail was arguably more of a skirmish miniatures game, rather than a TTRPG of any sort. You can almost make the same argument for D&D though, I guess.
What’s your favourite out of the RPGs you listed?
Keep em peeled for an up and coming video. I'll reveal all!

Also, hell yes, so glad to see ttrpgs outside of D&D being promoted. It's a big world out there, and there are many many options.

Thanks @spellcasters! Unfortunately I do keep slipping into saying DnD, you know. Like a parasite in my brain!
I play in a very dark and serious campaign, where the whole world is only a 30 foot square. You wont find stuff like that online!
That all sounds Ancient Greek to me...
So every world right? I mean it's always 30ft squared. If it's not you're doing it wrong.

Love that pixel gnome!!! You need merch!!
Put me down for a t-shirt featuring an un-fingered gnome.
gnome merch. On it.
What is a TTRPG? It's like playing cops and robbers, only you've got rules and dice to settle things when I'm yelling "Got you!" and you're yelling "Nah, you missed!"
This.
I'm experienced in many TTRPGs, so I am too aware of that moment when you say TTRPG, people look confused, so you roll your eyes and say D&D.
Oh I hear ya! It's like you're speaking another language!
Utter perfection. Content is alright too
Oh stop it! I say stop it, keep it coming
Our DM must have watched this video. Our gnome is traumatized.
Part of me hopes you rolled poorly. Poor Gnome....or LUCKY Gnome!
Good video! Will you do an episode on character creation?
Definitely!!
Mausritter is definitely on the list! Love the look of that!
This is brilliant. Made TTRPG sound super cool! Love it! 👑 ✨❤ Ps - Your G string on the guitar is out of tune 😂
Would you like to come over and tighten my G string? Is that what you're suggesting?
@@DexSaveDan thought you'd never ask! 👊🏻 😘
This sounds like a pyramid scheme
Pleased for you that you’re so amazing.
My imagination’s better than your imagination! I can imagine stuff you can’t even imagine!

...well
:-P and while it is the biggest RPG in the world... it didn't really catch up in Germany. By that time i already played DSA and had the starter box for several years :D

A bit Garth Merengie 😂 love the Alan Partridge clips, too....Eddie guests too!
Funny because I had never liked that nerdy to geeky ahhh game from the beginning so the jokes on you pal.
Cool
I am working on my own system, and that definition you read there is not even close to what I am trying to do. But yes, I am well aware that I break away from many of the paradigms in the space.
I'd like to see what you come up with. It'll at least be better than 5e.
Great content, keep it coming!
Thanks!! Will do!!
soon my group is starting vampire (after finishing mage), and you can bet your sweet ass i am going to be trying to ice skate up hill.
I hope it doesn't......suck
I don't run 5e. I run Paranoia and Pathfinder 2e, but I admit when I am explaining to people who probably don't know anything about TTRPGs I will sometimes just say "I play D&D".
We are all guilty. If you don't sometimes do this, you're lying.
Personally, I love getting new people into storytelling RPGs! PbtA is a great framework that's spawned a bunch of titles, and I find people grok those games well when they don't come in with baggage from games like D&D!
Yes! I've got a group where only 1 of them has played D&D a handful of times. It's lovely!

A: It's "let's pretend" with rules.

Was this written by ChatGPT?
.....well
Nice start. Take us someplace good, please.

I will, take my hand, it'll be a wild ride.
thank god someone else gets it! Most groups are better served by ttrpgs that are either crunchier than D&D or simpler than D&D. D&D is just the worst pick every time, unless you want to specifically play D&D

My PoD books will be for the players
My EZD6 order just arrived!
All of this for days! So what's your favourite system?

Why is it Games Master but not Dungeons Master? I concur, there are better games with fewer "Because I said so" rules. I started with 1E AD&D in 1981, but by 1986 I had played and run 12 other games not published by TSR. Also, the newest edition is not always the best edition.
