ABSTRACT
What's made Google search, Facebook, the iPod, and Firefox household names? They all keep interaction to a minimum. The best presentation of content is the one which requires the least number of clicks and choices. Information overload is daunting: Few clicks and choices means more people stay and use your site. Avoiding interaction seduction allows you to create interfaces that are easier to learn and faster to use with surprisingly delightful interfaces. As an example, we'll see what Google search would have looked like if the Lobby For Advancement Of Carpal-Tunnel Syndrome had got their way.
Speaker: Aza Raskin
Aza gave his first talk on user interface at age 10 and got hooked. At 17, he was talking and consulting internationally; at 19, he coauthored a physics textbook because he was too young to buy alcohol; at 21, he started drinking alcohol and co-founded Humanized. Two years later, Aza founded Songza.com, a minimalist music search engine that had over a million song plays during it's first week of operation. After Humanized was sucked into Mozilla, Aza became Head of User Experience for Mozilla Labs. In another life, Aza has done Dark Matter research at both Tokyo University and the University of Chicago, from where he graduated with honors in math and physics. When not working (ha!) Aza enjoys playing music and punning.
As someone that is not in the "design business", for me this has been a very clear presentation, with few and well structured concepts. May be not that is "ready to use" for implementation... but I guess that is something he is (very well) paid for!
in page search should be as easy as just typing. the only pages where the typing would be replaced is filling out forms
a great talk. too much trash in the comments unfortunately. I support Aza! The guy has got really good ideas
thankyou for this video, i really enjoyed it despite the bad jokes (lol), it was very informative and Aza Raskin is extremely good at explaining his point in a manner that reached everybody. I'm just starting out with looking at developing web pages and so I thought this would go over my head but i managed to follow him with no problems. Thanks again buddy.
Don't make me click
Yeah, but make me scroll even more...
A conversation between Aza Raskin and Gordon Ramsey:
Right?
Yes?
Right!
Yes.
Right?
Yes!
Right.
Yes?
Regarding his example about the trip planner UEx, check out the UEx of creating/planning trips on EnTrip! It's quite similar to what he mentioned, and really neat!
very nice demonstration at 36:02
Eventually they will come up with black window where you type stuff in and hit enter and the computer just does what you want.
If there would be a software to automatically cut out all times he said "right" in the speech, it would be really neat too. That makes it very hard to listen, although I find his content quite interesting.
@coachz44 it's not a powerpoint, it's a presentation in the firefox browser.
@Assi2004 Yeah, but you're talking about advanced software here. When you check your emails, do you want to have in input the pop and stmp server information each time? Do you want to have to manually collate all your threaded emails your self? The complexity if the interface should be proportional to the complexity of the operation it performs.
good speaker
It's interesting that from this time to the present, google has introduced more of the concept around 17 min in, with its business listings and other sidebar items from maps, wikipedia, etc.
Ha! I absolutely agree! And it's plethora of barely strung together incomprehensible products don't make life easier either!
RUclips gold, right there!
Right. Right. Right. Stopping now. Right.
He is worth 17 million dollars right?

Good talk.
One thing : Download mega-zoom, that way you can run all your cocoa apps in fullscreen.
omg, 1 hour of video in RUclips! What I have to do for that?
The content of this speech in terms of implementation and application is pretty slim, but I think the ideas behind it are very basic and yet unintuitive, which I believe is why he has chosen to devote most of the time to the fundamentals. I also don't think there's a short answer to the question, "This is all great, but what should I be using for my project?"
interesting material but there were too many um's and aah's in Aza's talk. My estimate is that there were more than 100 um's ...
if its quality, its worth watching
LOL AT THE BEGINNING THE GIRL SAID "And then he was SUCKED into Mozilla". LOLOLOLOL!!!
@flashdagger Users don't mind scrolling as much as clicking. By far. (Scrolling can also be done everywhere on the page. Clicking requires precision.)
annoying is that you DON'T HAVE A REMOTE!!!
fascinating title name! I feel I would like to click this video glip.
I'm the earliest here 😁
whoa like 1hour im now watching the whole thing lol
Where is scroll tabs?)
right?
202 times right!
right?
I think the presentation would largely benefit from a remote control for his slides. Otherwise really good.
He could've, but that would involve clicking
but true
good talk, but people just have to start laughing :)
Nihon go de ok :D hehe
im definetly not smrt enough for this.... did i spell that right? SMRT ? (HOMER ;)
this dude seriously did inspire leanerd from big bang, right
?
okay, the Q/A was marginally better, and I guess the basic point is worth reminder.
But the kid is still a bit full of himself.
What even is this how is this going to help me in life?
+Himat Gill Nothing helps a closed mind.
Buy google.
Um
People who are interested in things other than men getting hit in the groin by footballs.
It's not "right", it's more like "noauraiiyy"
This is actually pretty stupid. He's not a very intelligent speaker, most of his ideas are just regurgitated and dumbed-down versions of his dad's ideas. And he spent half the talk hitting on that chick in the front.
He said a site can be boring OR annoying... well, this vid is both :} no offence man, but talking is not your style :))
Talk about a long boring video!
jesus, Aza Raskin, you've gotta work on your ahhm disease, it's totally annoying
Boring
