  • We go hands-on with a prototype of the Lynx R1, a standalone AR/VR headset that is shipping next year for $600. Running on the same Qualcomm XR2 processor as the Quest 2, the Lynx R1 fully embraces pass-through mixed reality with full-color cameras, hand tracking, and inside-out 6DOF tracking that lets you also use it to stream SteamVR games. We chat with Lynx founder Stan Larroque about the headset's hardware and how it blends the real world with the rendered one.

    Really hope this is the direction all VR/AR headsets move toward.. We NEED smaller form factors like this.. And the BEST AR possible right now, is VR with pass-through cameras. That's the only kind of AR that allows you to walk from an AR space, through a portal into a VR space, and back.. And doesn't make everything look like a transparent hologram, like transparent-lens AR does.

    My hunch is that FB's reversal on "required login for VR" was at least partially influenced by Lynx's immediate funding and general messaging within community to rebuke mass data collection - or at least an unfavourible profit/rep analysis, which seems in part as well why distancing from FB brand. /shrug

      i think you are right about that. Also.. The ideal passthrough would have an adjustable IPD, and I think they could pull it off on this device - it would add to complexity and cost but it would also expand the appeal to a wider audience too. I get a headache if my VR IPD is off by more than a millimeter and I'm way up at ~69-70.

    $600 with this capability is a worthy competitor to the Quest 2 (despite being double the price of the consumer model), the passthrough experiments I've done with the Quest 2 kinda shows the current limitation of using Quest 2 as an AR device so price diff is justified. For professional users where an Oculus OFB device is $800, this is a great deal with more capability.
    Though I do wonder if it is compatible with OVRInput... especially in relation to hand tracking. This would be a no brainer if developers can take software written with Oculus's API and it'll just work.

    • @ANGEL_BOB_YT
      @ANGEL_BOB_YT 2 года назад

      @@ANGEL_BOB_YT Yeah I thought my comment was kinda clear about that. Oculus just released the passthrough API to get developers ready for when their next headset with better cameras by letting us use passthrough as AR for now.

    • @kevinbrook7033
      @kevinbrook7033 2 года назад

      I don't see how it competes with Quest 2 without an eco system. The reason the Quest 2 is popular is it because it has actual games and software constantly being developed for it. What is the app store for the Lynx and who is making games and applications for it? it looks like a proof of concept and nothing more to me at this stage.

    • @jonassandstedt
      @jonassandstedt 2 года назад +3

      Off course Oculus own API wouldn't work. But OpenXR will work out out the box. Many devs including myself is switching to OpenXR for easier cross platform support. Many games available on Quest are also available on Pico store. It's the same chipset (XR2) in all 3 of these headsets. So don't see why you couldn't port your current game to this platform too.
      But this first headset will not try to compete directly with the Quest. But it will be a first step to be able to do that. Same with Pico Neo 1 & 2.

    • @kevinbrook7033
      @kevinbrook7033 2 года назад

      @@jonassandstedt that's interesting to know, I didn't know a lot of the games were available for non Quest standalones. This headset won't be very good for VR though with the open headset and limited FOV, it's clearly intended for AR and I just wonder who will actually develop the kind of titles that would be appeal to consumers on it. I can see lots of business/sales/design type uses but for consumers I can't think of much you would do with this?

    You bring up SteamVR.... but is that for sure the case? Is this translatable that way? As he was talking about the hardware environment, the programming, the options at the devs disposal, etc... all pitched as such that the programs for this would have to be written FOR THIS. Would this in fact translate directly to the existing VR ecosystems? Acting simply as a VR display? With the headset giving feedback to the PC in terms of controller or hand tracking, head position, spatial tracking, etc? Or is it expected that the apps would be running on the internal hardware, being developed for it in specific, etc? If it is indeed good to go with SteamVR, would you be able to pair normal controllers? Any controllers?

    Hello a question. Is it possible to take the image of a night vision camera and somehow connect it to the ar glasses. Then you have a new kind of night vision device. is that possible?

      You can add cameras if you have the drivers, it has USB C port, wifi and bluetooth for external devices and pheripherals.

    I do find some of this big gimmicky I'm a bit old-fashioned but futuristic at the same time I like the idea of having a VR headset that gives me two monitors so I can do all the normal stuff but on floating monitors I am not dissing VR I like VR in the way of gaming but I like to see some traditional software for other stuff like working I will always have to work on normal monitors or things like animation and stuff I got suspicions this is what Oculus next headset is going to be I don't think it be for gaming I think it for productivity The Oculus quest 2 is going nowhere yet

    • @jonassandstedt
      @jonassandstedt 2 года назад

      I may be a bit old fashioned. But I really find it hard to ready when people don't use punctuations.
      But no, unfortunately this headset is still a bit to low res to be able to replace your monitor for text based work. You can make the fonts a bit larger. But it's still not that comfy to read. But there is other much more hi-res VR headsets already on the market for that use-case.
      But this is not a VR headset, it's a MR headset. Big difference in use-cases.
      (Sorry for sounding like a douche 😂)

      @@williamcousert it appears to be somewhat comparable. I think it's a bit lower in fov and resolution but that gets a little weird with the interlacing on the render pipeline and open facial interface. Would a lower fov bother you if you can see more of the outside world? That kind of stuff.

      Meta Cambria will be 2160 x 2160 per eye..... Massive leap ahead.
      But, this is $600, cambria is likely around $1,199.
      Quest 3 will probably do it for $400 late 2023 though, but at least this will have a whole year on the market before then with little to no competition.

    • @zackmac5917

      The tech has been brewing in the background.
      High quality pass-through AR, pancake lenses with micro oled, eye tracking.....All heading to market now.
      PSVR2 also on the horizon, which will blast the industry forward.
      Headsets like this, meganex, cambria, PSVR2, all kickstarting the next wave of the tech this year. Next year, Quest 3 hits. Valve will also be releasing their next headset. And there will be new versions of others like next gen Windows MR. So, we are now entering the next stage of VR.
      This next gen of VR is going to bring the tech forward to a place where millions more will become interested. 10s of millions will flood into VR with PSVR2, Quest 3, cambria 1 & 2, and valves next gen (potentially standalone/pc hybrid) headset. And that will become a snowball effect that won't slow down, it'll speed up.
      Think of the curve of the VR industry as exponential. Starts slow, but slowly increases. Eventually this next gen hits, and the curve of growth rapidly gets steeper and steeper. That's what is about to happen.
      Unfortunatley, since Quest 1, Meta chose to wind down the PC VR side of things, which didn't help. But good thing they see it as part of the future with a hybrid standlon/pc system, so I'm glad. Valve also has slowed on their side, but again, have been working on the next headset at least, and have voiced their dedication and plans for VR, so they have just been slow.
      Due to these innovations in VR tech not being ready over the last few years, and Meta not pushing the high end on PC, things slowed, but now we're gearing up for next gen VR starting this year, and it's about to get wild.
      This next generation is going to see VR absolutely explode, in terms of user base, and technology.
