The great wall around Asgard wasn't build until long after the war. It was build with the promise of Freya's hand in marriage as part of the payment. Before the war the Aesir had no say over Freya.
The same for Odins spear Gungnir. He got that at the same time Thor got Mjolnir and Freyr got his golden boar Gullinbursti and folding ship Skíðblaðnir. Freyr was not with the Aesir until after the war.

According to the God of War universe, the between the Aesir & Vanir started when Freyr, Freya’s brother, went to Asgard to show the Aesir special Vanir magic to help improve crop yields. But the Aesir were too undisciplined & impatient to learn the subtleties of Vanir spellcraft. Bitter & shortsighted, they tied up Freyr & set him on fire. Fortunately, he used the opportunity to escape, but such an affront made war inevitable.

Well, God of War is not an historical source.... its a modern game...... which just steals and botchers norse mythology. Why even share that? "Oh, people wanna learn about norse mythology, well heres some lies about it!" why...? It was Freya they burned 3 times not Frey. Please learn how to differenciate between historical mythology and modern fantasy.

The ironic thing is that the top three Aesir mentioned here were not pure Aesir. Odin was the son of Bor (Aesir) and Bestla (Jotun). Then you have Thor, son of half-Jotun Odin and Jotun mother Jord. Loki is also the son of a Jotun, and it's unclear if his mother was Aesir, Jotun or something else. This kind of makes modern neo-pagans who see the Norse gods as symbols of racial purity look ridiculous.

In God of War, Freyr, Freya's brother, went to Asgard to show the Aesir Vanir magic to boost grain production. But the Aesir were too reckless and impatient to master Vanir magic. Freyr was bound up and burned by bitter, shortsighted people. Luckily, he escaped, but the insult made war unavoidable.
