My SD has obedience and Rally titles; she's VERY good off-leash. However, I prefer to use a prong when she's working. Most of the time, her leash has a full 'J' shape to it because I don't need to actually be putting any pressure on her collar. However, when we walk through tight crowds the prong gives me the highest level of communication with the least amount of effort, which both of us appreciate! People don't give me trouble about it, but I think that is because she's a 95 pound moose and they figure a prong is probably the only way a person could control such a beast!

I thought your video was pretty clear and not all that unstructured, myself. The message was consistent: Don't judge a dog by it's clothes.
A lot of the judgmentalism I'm seeing coming out of disabled communities is stemming from the frustration of being judged. We face a lot of stigma and inconvenience because of assumptions, and human nature tends to gravitate towards doing what you are exposed to on a regular basis.
"Judge not less ye be judged" isn't just a God/individual or religious thing. It's very much a human thing...being judgemental inspires others to be judgemental and soon you have a broken community nitpicking each other over the dumbest things. It's something we all have to be aware of in life and guard against.
If the dog isn't sniffing all over, peeing on things, lunging, pulling, and acting like an unruly pet, just mind your own business. I could not give one flying flip about how perfect or tight someone else's dog's turns are or what gear they have on. I'm not your dog trainer, I do not live your life, I do not know your dog, and I do not have your body. Your medical devices and how you use them/decorate them is none of my business.

And the same people will watch the Kentucky Derby 🐎 with great interest where if the horse brakes a leg it will most likely need to be put down. Properly used these devices shouldn't affect your dog. The only thing to look out for is if Veterinarians start to state concerns from seeing damage in a clinical setting from proper usage... then it's time to talk to the vet and consider using something else.
Thank you for having the courage to speak up on the issue of judgmental attitudes in the SD Community. Full disclosure: I am a person with multiple disabilities/health conditions most of which fall under the hidden disability column. I don't have a service dog though I have several qualifying conditions for service dogs. I am interested in advocacy for those with disabilities and over time took a special interest is Service Dogs as one of the ways that those with disabilities can enhance their lives and participate more fully in private and public life.
One thing I feel that is very important is to not separate SDs from the basic principles of Federal Disability Law and most importantly WHY we have these laws... Like many people I use the letters ADA as a pivot point but of course there are other Federal Laws concerning access and reasonable accommodation for those with disabilities. ACAA, The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 Code 504, FHAct to name a few though the ADA is the one that seems to affect the most people and is also kind of a touch stone for some of the other laws.
I may be too sick for a service dog... not sure... but at this time I am someone who does deal with discrimination and denial of services. I know that those hinderances are multiplied almost exponentially for those with service dogs. I don't know how some of you deal with all the BS that is out there seemingly waiting for every time you go into the public square. The giggly people who just have to pet your service dog. The person who got a SDIT last week that is out of control but they troll every inch of the store spotting "fakes"... The gotcha thing is getting old... except that people faking or exaggerating disabilities (some qualifying disabilities are based on degree or intensity or frequency and not only "type" of disability- one migraine every ten years is probably below the bar) can cause serious injury or death through fraudulent use of dogs intended for those who really need them. The people who, in my opinion, qualify for service dogs but who could really stand to have a human care taker to fill in the blanks... One of biggest pet peeves: Trainers who act like the government endorses them and who use the expression "Service Dog Industry"... This goes for some of the organizations that while they often do many good things some have righteous entitlement issues and some exploit those with disabilities.
People who think the ADA or ACAA is their primarily for Service Dog Issues... But they don't realize that if they understand the big picture of disability issues that there will be less confusion and better access for all with disabilities, whether it's the College Student with ADHD who is legally allowed more time to take exams or the College Student who needs a dog to help them get through the cafeteria to eat and socialize with their peers.
Again, great video and I subbed and look forward to your other videos.

I use a gentle leader because Willow is still working on a tight heel, and it helps SO MUCH. (:< I hate seeing prongs fitted improperly on dogs especially SD. If you use a prong, FIT IT PROPERLY. Sheeesh.

My dog can heel off leash and on a flat collar just fine, but I use a halti and a two ended leash when working my dog. both ends attach to the chin strap on the halti. One end of the leash comes up on her left side and the other comes up on her right, just like a horse's reigns. For me, the halti really is just like a horse's bridle. It's the best way for me to give my dog directions when I can't talk and I have muscular weakness. It's really the only way to g for me.

I agree. This needs to extend to whatever methods one uses to train their dogs, the patches (or lack of) and how they handle their dog (as long as it is controlled and within the law) and where they place their dog when working and what etiquette they deem important and a bunch of other issues handlers face. One size does not fit all.
I am using a prong on my service puppy IN TRAINING (6 months old now). The thing is that he was trained from 8 weeks old with a near complete lack of force and physical correction. He doesn't understand or key in to a leash correction with the martingale. Because of this I have to nag him with the corrections or choose to do dramatic corrections (and he doesn't understand why his neck keeps getting jerked on because the ideal correctable moment has passed by the time he even keys in to the fact he's being communicated with). It was a mess.
All I've had to use was a finger twitch of a pull on the leash. That slight. He feels it the moment I do it so knows exactly where and how he went off course and is getting meaningful feedback, so it is helping him understand what I am asking of him- which he is more than willing to do once he understands and I can get on to the business of rewarding him over and over and over. This is a communication tool, not a tool to hurt him in any way. He's alot happier and so am I. What is good for him is good for me in the end.
A prong also might be of use to someone with limited hand strength or arm mobility. You just never know...

Kody can walk on a flat buckle without any issues and does great, but after being attacked by another dog, he tends to get really scared around new dogs, I started using a head collar/gentle leader to pull his face away so we can continue walking and it has helped him and me out wonderfully! Soon, he wont need it anymore, but for his safety and that little bit of guidance I use the head harness.

lol looks better than my rant. I really wish more people would understand this. I have nerve damage and some days I can not hold onto the leash. Thankfully in my city an electronic leash is still classified as a physical leash. My Koda has a vibrating collar because of this. No I'm not sittin on the button. It's to fulfill the need for the dog to be tethered. He stays next to me and doesn't really need it but I prefer to be legal. I lost track of the times people have accused me of abusing him because of the collar.

Thank you so much for making this. I am so tired of hearing crap about my lola collar. He associates it with work, and it is never used for corrections. I wish the public sometimes would keep their comments to themselves. Unless you are in a situation, just don't say anything....

Horse was on a headcollar, basically because an OT threw a tantrum at him being able to run away and drag me out of a wheelchair. He wore it and ended up knowing where I was based on where the leash was. It was just part of his uniform!

Watson's vest has patches all over it. It's not the one we use most often, but it's our "fun" vest for conventions or parks or fairs or something.
It has slytherin (for watson) and ravenclaw (for me) patches, a pizza John patch, The Fault in Our Stars patches, a button that says, "spoonie and proud" and then normal SD patches. Doesn't make us any less legitimate.

I use a prong because I feel more secure with that type of collar, and my dog wears a balance harness that looks much like a guide harness and when people see me in my chair they freak... They think I'm blind! Side note: not all service dog users are blind! :) thanks again

I have used different types of collars depending on how I feel tht day or on where we need to go for example if we r just going to the typical store around in my city I use her marting gale collar if we r going to children's hospital I use her gentle leader which most people don't know is actually better then any other collar because it doesn't choke the dog 😃

I do multiple dog sports with my service dog. For fun walks he wears a flat collar with his tags. For SD work he wears his vest and a gentle leader, with this he knows he's working. During competitive obedience trials he wears a flat collar with no tags or leash (for safety collar has a brass plate with my info incase he gets away, or worse were in a car accident). For Agility I use a fleece all in one martingale leash combo. For Nosework I use a basic harness (one loop around neck, one around chest with piece going from neck to back strap, nylon) and lastly I use a sport flex harness (strap across front of chest that attaches to strap around girth) and no collar for dock diving. He know what each means and with gentle leader he's a perfect gentleman, but when his sport flex harness goes on he becomes a space head cause swimming is his favorite thing to do for fun, and I let him enjoy dock diving because we only do 4 or so trials a year.
