      where are you finding the dual stage firm outer foams for rear?

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  2 года назад

      Depends on the tires and what I had at the time. For my testing I'll be using the foams that came with the tires, as we're trying to test what you get when you buy them. Modifications are a whole extra layer of complexity that need their own testing, I think. I may get to a foam comparison after the tire testing, but that'll likely be next year. Making videos takes a lot of time!
      The dual stage foams I have here are a combination of cheap INJORA sets, nicer boom racing sets and some other ones from various crawling companies from some years back. The INJORA ones aren't bad but they're heavier than I'd like. The boom racing ones are quite good.

    • @stalyun8211
      @stalyun8211 2 года назад +1

      @@RCTNT when you were talking about the BFG Krawlers you said you had dual stage foams in them with firm in the rear and soft up front (I laughed as I typed that) I was wondering where you found dual stage with a firm outter. Or did you mean dual stage soft in front and the solid blueish firm foam in the rear?

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  2 года назад

      @@stalyun8211 oh I see, you're right! They'd be boom racing dual stage, then. That's an oversight on my part that should be fixed for the next series, as I'm going to have stock foams on all tire sets.
      You can mix and match different foams with hard, medium and soft inner and outer rings. I prefer firmer on the rear for added support on ascents and softer on the front for added traction on the leading wheels.
      You want a soft outer on both, but a firmer inner on the rear than on the front - at least in my opinion!

    WOW! What an excellent effort! It's like having the real off-road tyres tested... Well, they a ARE real off-road tyres😄, but you know what I mean 😆. Anyway, I was surprised how Traxxas Canyon RT performed relatively poorly in this comapro. Have you done a value table of average performance to price ratio - you made a point about Pitbull Growlers cost vs your expectations?
    Solid work! Thank you for sharing. I think I just found my new favorite RC channel to go to, AND, you're on Southern hemisphere - nice to have a different perspective on the hobby too. 👍

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  Год назад

      I'm so glad you've been enjoying my videos, thanks for your comments today, Mack S :)
      Canyon RTs did okay still, honestly. For OEMs they're still pretty good, especially when you consider they have more narrow foams, given they're 4.6" tires on 2.2" wheels. There's less space in the tire carcass for foam and less side-wall, so they are very good with that in mind!
      Haven't done a price to performance comparo yet, but that'll probably be part of my 'biggest on youtube' 1.9" tire test series coming this year. Price will have to be based on recommended retail price in USA, as that will cater to the majority of my viewers, but we southern-hemisphere dwellers should still get something out of it. I'll do my best! Cheers :)

    What a humongous undertaking that was! I am amazed of the amount of great info in here! I've seen it a couple of times to be able to digest all the info.
    If anything, the trail results are maybe the ones I am not taking as critical for making a decision, for as you say, any of the tires here will get you through most trails.
    Thank you for using the same foams on all compounds, as this would have surely affected results. As stated in previous videos, we can't expect the rims to be also the same [size, offset and more crucially, weight], Now maybe there's an idea. To test how much weight on wheels actually helps on a series of empirical tests as well as driving? Maybe not necessarily as I wrote it, but maybe this can get your brain "transfer" into high-gear for some awesome content in the future! =)
    Again, thank you for making such thorough testing!

      You're welcome and I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I'm going to do wheel weight - though if you think it through carefully, I have results for the Sendero with its plastic wheels and also for it with the metal wheels that add 100g/corner. Haven't got them to hand this second! But yes, the TRX4 Sport will get this treatment shortly, when I compare various performance mods one by one and then all together. Coming soon!

    That's my guess.. I know some aren't on the list but thsts my guess at the intro of this video

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  4 месяца назад

      Nice guess! I am running Trenchers on my Scale-1 rig, as you may have seen in my current video about the SCX10 III becoming a Scale-1 comp machine.
      Regarding tires in general, things have changed a bit since this video and I have WAY more tires to test.
      But I've also been diving into foams, making my own inserts, etc., and what I've learned is that it's nearly impossible to do testing that's useful to others beyond simply an indication. Different tires work better/worse with different inserts/foams and also with different vehicle weights. It's quite a complex topic.
      I'm still going to try to do a follow-up to these with my huge series, but I'll need to have this discussion as part of that, too. I'll demonstrate by testing the same tires with single and dual stage foam and TPU inserts, and then also on a heavier and lighter car. It'll really show how different things can be with these little changes.

      @RCTNT update, I purchased the krawlers in march 2023, now August 2024 they are showing a good amount of wear around the bead. I'm gonna try some glue to get more life out of them but not sure how much more I'll get. When they do eventually tear I'll probably go with g8 compound. If you haven't yet I would definitely recommend checking out the proline maxxis trepadors. I run those alot on my gladiator and have found they're a great all around tire. Long time watcher, first time commenter. Have you considered taking the top 2 and maybe bottom 2 sets of tyres and then trying them on different vehicles? I guess what I’m saying is, you have put all tyres on one vehicle, put one tyre on many vehicles to see if a tyre could be more suited to a configuration. And now you have you rain simulator (watering can) you can do wet and dry. Just a thought……

    I was doing some of my own simple tests this summer at a skateboard park to see which of all my tires would climb the best on the smooth concrete slopes. (most of which are covered in graffiti making them pretty slick) To my surprise my 5.3" Canyon Trails came in a very close 2nd beating out most of the tires I have bought. For some reason my 4.6" Canyon Trails did not do well coming in close to the bottom. I don't know if it is a byproduct of the mixture of heat and acetone used to remove them off of the stock rims vs just a bit of acetone in a baggy with the 5.3 tires overnight with no heat. I have a new 2021 Bronco arriving in the mail tomorrow so I have a new set of 4.6" CT and will see how they do next summer. Otherwise my number one performer at the skateboard park was a 4.75" Pitt Bull Rock Beast clone tire from Amazon. They are super soft and stick to themselves like glue. Whatever the compound is it works well. I can relate to the effort you have put into the tests you have done after doing my own little test with only 8 sets of tires on a couple of slopes.

Due to that content I bought the BFG Krawler and Gmade 1904 with additional beadlocks from gmade, but the whole wheels are not vented or ventilated. • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  Год назад +1

      I often drill a small hole in the beadlock wheel on the inside rim. Two holes if you want to balance it. You absolutely don't have to vent - it can help but you want to be sealed for wet running. Vent for best rock performance, though it isn't critical.

      Hahaha well I can recommend the Cooper STT for rocky ascents and descents, which is about as close to crawling without crawling. I've had quite a few different sets over the years on my Landcruisers and the STT just did not disappoint. Get the tire pressure appropriately low for the terrain and you'll walk up stuff even with open diffs while newer vehicles with better config but lesser tires will be left to lock or winch up. The Micky T Baja Claws are similarly good, if we're comparing off road steep stuff.

      Hey Jimmy, thanks for joining me here! Good to have you along for the ride.
      Honestly, I'd just run the stock tires if only trailing. I don't think it's worth paying more money for better rubber unless you find it lacking in some way. And if you do find it lacking, take a look at my trail video, linked in this video description. It goes over how each of the tires grip on damp dirt, if that's any help!
      I have another video coming soon where we'll test what difference just adding heavier wheels makes. That might be a good start as wheels are often much cheaper than tires and then even if you do swap your tires later, you can use the better wheels with those too!

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  2 года назад +1

      The foams were all what came with the tires, or where they didn't come with foams, the cheap INJORA dual stage set with medium in rear and soft in front. It's the weakest part of the testing I've done so far - I simply didn't have the energy to change so many sets of tires and foams for the series. I'm hoping to take another run at tire and foam testing, with a broader range and foams will have a part, hopefully!
      I'd stick with the Grabbers for now. Wear them in a bit. Enjoy them. They're good tires. Certainly, the BFG Krawlers are great, though I haven't tested them in G8 compound. They're bigger, too. Sendero will do well on them, as we've seen in recent tests (there are two videos in the tire test playlist that are relevant: the initial dry tire test, and the 5 Rigs One Tire video where we used the Krawlers on 5 different trucks). No hurry to change the tires, basically. Enjoy the OEM set, they're good.

    Hi mate great vid.
    I found it interesting that the tyres referred to as 1.9 and 2.2 don't show any OD on packaging or website? Can't see on Proline. Is this the case? I did order what I thought were bigger tyres from RC4WD and seems they are same OD but that's ok. Just a bit odd the OD doesn't feature on these websites. Real cars have all dimensions covered. Thoughts?

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  Год назад +1

      They do tell you, but sometimes you have to look. RC4WD usually puts it in the product title, while Pro-Line often just lists it in the description. In both cases, the size is almost always on the tire sidewall as well - both OD and width.
      Example 1 - RC4WD: it's in the description and even in the URL: store.rc4wd.com/rc4wd-mickey-thompson-22-baja-mtz-scale-tires-419.html
      Example 2 - Pro-Line: it's only in the description: www.prolineracing.com/product/1-10-trencher-g8-front-rear-1.9-rock-crawling-tires-2/PRO1018314.html (second line in Key Features)
      There's no established standard, not really. The wheel size is the only guide but to get OD and width you usually have to check the description. It's usually listed in Imperial but also sometimes in Metric as well, depending on manufacturer. Boom Racing gives you Metric and Imperial, which folks outside the USA will appreciate.

      That's what I tried to do over the 3 videos. You're safe with Proline Predator compound in whatever tread you prefer.
      I've got a few more coming (jconcepts, RC4WD, duratrax) but from what I've tested so far, the best thing to do is see the chart at the end of the video. This gives a breakdown of performance over different terrains. Cheers

    How can you "test" all these tires, without using the proper FOAMS for each tire compound !!??? And not "declare" what foams are in each set of tires ??
    - So, without knowing that variable, how can you say which tire set(s)
    (per"formed") BEST !!!????
    I would say, one "could" appreciate your efforts, but with no idea what FOAMS are in the tires, how can we agree with your "results" !!???
    Although, good effort !!
    And "maybe" some people can pull results from this !??
    Plus it depends on weight distribution and weight load of each tire. So foams are very important here !!!
    No way to tell without at least one "control" !!! 🤔...

      Sure, that's fair. I did say it was indicative and definitely not scientific, but hopefully there's still something to draw from it.
      For what it's worth, the same dual stage INJORA soft fonts and firm rears are in 4 of the tires (the Krawlers, Hyrax, Hyrax clones and the Proline super swamper 4.75). The stock foams are on all the OEM tires from each of the rigs (nitto grapplers, canyon trails, canyon tr, general grabber, mt-1904, irok sswampers), the standard mfr foams are in those tires that shipped with them (Proline sswampers 4.3", PitBull growlers).
      I used the same wheels on 4 of the sets and soon will expand that to being on 8. The other metal wheels all weigh a similar amount so it is close enough for my testing here. However, there are plastic wheels on several still: nitto grappler, mt-1904, canyon rt, irok sswampers.
      You do make a good point in that I could have shown the weight of each tire and wheel set and noted the foams, or at least standardised them all (though the cost and complexity quickly multiplies when we're covering so many sets!)
      All this being said, I chose my words carefully in the video. "From this test" and "on my course with this equipment" and "this is indicative" and "unscientific but hopefully still helpful", etc.
      I've been doing the channel for just over 3 months. I have many more tests planned and we're going to be able to get increasingly precise with test parameters as we go.
      All videos here are provided free of charge for your entertainment. Your constructive criticism is heard and acknowledged, but in exchange I ask you be patient and to remember I don't ask you to agree with my results - I'm going to keep working away on this stuff and we'll see where we end up.
      OK, enough talk, back to the serious business of playing with toy trucks! :)
