In the movie, I think Thomas was once either one of the many angels that rebelled or an angel who was slain in battle and then was reincarnated as a human.
I like the the theory, but I think it also takes away something from the story. The second war in heaven is fought because God loves man more than the angels, and they're jealous. Daggett just being a human is important here because it shows how much agency God is giving a human to prevent Gabriel's plan.

My question then would be, then why be so cruel to his first creation if God could just as easily modify an angel to be more human, in turn correcting the "flaw". But then the whole "God" is testing them questions peaks its ugly head again. Where does the actual test begin and where does it end, what is the truth and what is just conjecture and excuses.

I seem to recall brief talk of a potential crossover with Dracula 2000 franchise. I can't find anything about that online, but being a writer myself who has had some contact with those in the industry (and those who know them) I can confirm that the idea for a crossover was discussed even if it never made the news of the day. It would have worked too since both franchises take their biblical backstories seriously. They were also owned by the same studio & what really stuck out to me was how actors Jason London & Jason Scott Lee ended up starring in the later Prophecy sequels after they had already shot the second & third Dracula 2000 films. This may be the closest we have to evidence that both actors were signed on for the crossover that never happened.
