Behavioural psychologist and technologist here, and you're *exactly* correct. Some days it depresses me to know that this is what it takes to stand out in a noisy digital crowd. Other days, companies offer to pay me to apply it.

I don't think the number is as high as the media is reporting. There will always be exceptions to the rule as there are individuals who are immunocompromised and have not completely cleared the infection when they thought they did.
"... the growing number of people who are “reinfected” ..." It's doubtful whether there actually is such a 'growing number'. Positive tests after negative tests don't automatically mean 'reinfection'.

This sampling technique requires the health provider to stick a long Q-tip through the nasal passage all the way to the back of the throat. Instant gag reflex triggered and it is not a pleasant experience to the patients either.
Okay. So my friend had Covid 19, was in ICU for almost a week and it was touch and go for a bit. He recovered, thankfully. He was discharged with instructions to self quarantine for 14 days. Once the 14 days were up, he planned a small get together with five people to celebrate his recovery. (btw, wouldn’t recommend) He read about people testing positive later, so before he had this event, he got swabbed nasally again and tested positive for the Corona Virus. He was 16 days after recovery and still tested positive. He’s now an asymptomatic carrier for the coronavirus. He cancelled his plans. Ten days later, he went to his doctor to get swabbed again to see if he could safely go grocery shopping. He tested positive. That’s now 26 days after he recovered that he’s still actively carrying this virus around through respiratory droplets. He won’t leave his house, naturally. If most people that recover think they’re Golden after 14 days, some are mistaken. What are your thoughts on this? There are people that are claiming to be reinfected, but is it actually that they just carry this virus long term and can infect people for months after?! I’m super interested to hear your opinions on this case. Antibody testing is great, but if they’re actively carrying this in their nasal passages for extended periods of time, what can even be done? UPDATE: Wow, a lot of people commented! I’d love to hear Dr Mike’s response as well. My friend just got swabbed again and tested negative, FINALLY!
What I've read on that topic was that it's possible that the virus is still present but not infectious anymore. But that this is something they still need to look into. (I'm mostly commenting so that I don't miss it when someone smarter than me answers this. It's a really good question.)
Good question - and a scary one :-( I think most of us are assuming that you get it and then you're done with it. Hate to think that you really just go asymptomatic but can still spread it
I believe it was in South Korea they've found that 90 people thus far who had it and cleared it, then came down with it again some time later, so they are investigating whether the virus can "reactivate" (vs. a person being "reinfected"), and that perhaps immunity only lasts a few months. But as Dr. Mike said, there are so many unknowns at this time. I'm also replying with the hope that he will address the OP's question.

Typically serological assays are set up to detect both the IgG and IgM response. A positive IgG response indicates the virus is still active in the body. IgMs are the 'memory' antibodies. But yeah, you're right could have both types and still be fighting the infection.
My country (Indonesia) are using rapid antibody test for screening positive patients, with RT-PCR follow up confirmation if they test positive. So yeah, we are trying to find infectious patients using the antibody test. The poor quality of that test right now probably means a lot of missed cases. Not to mention it takes time for building the antibody (so we miss early infection) or a case where the patients already recovered (never reported as positive as only RT-PCR positive tests are reported).

I think one of the reasons people are having a hard time with this pandemic is that so much of it is about statistics, and most people don't have the training or the skill to understand statistic data. I have the training and it's still something i have to focus on, I can't imagine my friends who ditched numbers after high-school math. This is why people either dismiss it or panic. They have a hard time keeping the notion that everything is a probability game, than less chances aren't ZERO chances but are better than MORE chances, and that every single action is a new roll of the dice.
Don't forget media plays a big part in this as well (like, oddly enough, like any shooting) where media almost always shine their lights on the negative sides and their tendency to use scare tactics and over dramatization of the numbers like how they over emphasize the number if infected but give little to no attention or just blatantly use smaller text on the numbers for those recovered and those killed while also not elaborating the numbers (like say showing the vast majority that died are either old, has weak immune systems or were already suffering another illness). And don't get me started on how they write their headlines with the vast majority of normies who "read" the news only read the headlines and would mostly just read the first paragraph which are usually just filled with stupid words used by the writer.
I studied research methodologies (statistics) in my undergrad, it is really difficult to stay on top of the numbers. For my part I take the numbers as incomplete and not representative of any final point. We can't yet, the numbers are still evolving. Now, try explaining that to someone who dropped numbers and logical reasoning in high school.

MRnaimadi that would be a false negative, which is not as dangerous here because it doesn’t cause a non-immune person to believe they are immune. False negatives are a much bigger deal when testing for the virus itself, because the test could say you’re fine when you’re actually carrying and transmitting the virus
It was technically mathematically incorrect, for instance if we assume 0% false negative rate and 5% false positive rate, like I believe was the case in the video, and assume 100 people, 50 of which are immune, then the expected number of positives should be 52.5 instead of 55. But I am just being pedantic. The presentation illustrated the problem well regardless of wether it was 100% accurate, or only 90%.
I think I started trusting dr Mike more than the WHO when in one of his videos he said “Covid 19 is technically a pandemic”. Back then WHO was still not ready to declare it a pandemic.
WHO screwed the pooch bad. The whole point of the WHO was to stop a pandemic like this from happening. I give them a 3 out of 10 on that. After this crisis is over I'm hoping an investigation will reveal exactly what happened and major reforms are done to make sure this doesn't happen again.
So how can people not rely on boosters if getting the virus and getting over it isn't enough? How can you prove full immunity from contracting and recovering from the virus whether vaccinated or unvaccinated? If you got over it fine it therefore makes sense all little variants aren't a worry. It's enough for chicken pox and influenza, it's the way heard immunity works so why not for this?

If you can't say how long natural immunity lasts, then you can't know how long the vaccine lastst, or does the vaccines use a second immune system than the one used to fight the virus?

My boss sent me home because he though I could test positive for the virus (I was having spring time allergies at this time, but no couching just sneezing). He told me to get a test taken in order to come back to work, however I wasn't allowed to get a test from anywhere around be because I had no symptoms...
You can even get a letter from the doctor clearing you for work. Since your boss is not a doctor and only a doctor can order a test it should suffice. If not follow the advice of Mason Cooper!!!

Hi dr mike. So basically we think that I have had covid19 in late January after visiting Bergamo which is the epicenter in Italy. The only symptom that I had was red/purple lesions on my toes which is a symptom in young people like me (16yrs old). I also had head aches and a slight cough. And my mother also had a dry cough for about two weeks after me. This was before covid became a big thing. I went to about 5 doctors and nobody knew what was wrong with me. How do I know if I had covid19 and can my blood help people if I’m hyper immune. Like this so that he’ll see this

Careful with that. Dr Mike's great, no doubt, but it's important to have multiple sources of reference whenever possible. Unilateral info consumption is weaponized by a lot of media to convince their viewers that anything they say is correct.
There's a bit of an inaccuracy in the section at 4:27 False positive rate is determined only by False Positives and True Negatives by the following formula: FPR = FP/(FP + TN) it is *not* calculated by using the entire tested population. To put this into context, if 100 people are tested and 5 of them are true positives and the FPR is 5% then you'd take 5% of the 95 remaining people which will be either TN or FP cases. The change is small for lower prevalence (95*0.05 = 4.75). This gives an accuracy 51.3% (as opposed to 50%) *However*, as prevalence of the virus increases, assuming the FPR does not change, say we have 50 True Positive cases then the remaining 50 are either TN or FP. This implies that only 5% of the 50 remaining population are FP (50*0.05 = 2.5). This gives an accuracy of 95.2% (as opposed to 90%) That's a huge 5% difference in accuracy!
@@jaybunny7616 Oversimplification involves omitting relevant information in a way that is misleading but not to the point of being false. It does not involve making up a new, incorrect way of doing things that will always give the wrong (false) answer just because it happens to be simpler, and then claiming that this is the mathematically correct way to do it, which is what Dr. Mike did in the video. That is just called being wrong. Dr. Mike didn't actually show any calculations (because this isn't a math tutorial), only the results of several steps of calculations, so doing the calculations the mathematically correct way and then putting those results on the screen instead would literally not have made the video any more complex or difficult to understand, it just would have required he understand the correct formula to use, which it appears he did not. His video presented factual errors deserving of correction, and correction was given in the comments. If he could put a note in the video with the correction that would be even better. Since this is ostensibly an educational channel (or at least an educational video on an entertainment channel), it really doesn't make sense to defend him presenting false information.
I really wish it was highly suggested to the entire population to watch Dr. Mike’s explanations on these things. I swear He communicate any concept to anyone clearly and thoroughly. There would be much less confusion and spreading of misinformation.

Have you recovered over thirty days ago? Test. (If your insurance will cover it or you have the extra money). If you had a sneezy, achy, snotty kind of winter you probably just had a cold.

When you get shingles, it’s not because the virus is reintroduced into your body, it’s because the virus is inactivated for some time after having chickenpox and then it reactivates to cause shingles
I wondered the same thing. I got cold sores when I was little but didn't get chicken pox until I was 22. I have never had shingles my my son did when he was around 4 and he had the chicken pox vaccination.
I had chicken pix twice , once as an infant, once at 15, both times mild. I also had to be revaxed for Typical childhood vaxes as I showed no immunity in a quantitative test. I was revaxed as an adult and showed only very low immunity when tested again. I must be a human anomaly.

Here's my story. Just wanted to share to see if anyone can relate. In early March, I became sick about a week and a half after I finished attending this huge college event (I'm 20) with people from all over the country. My symptoms were body aches, *really* bad coughing that eventually moved down into my chest, sore throat, a low-grade fever (but it only lasted for a very short time) and difficulty breathing that was so bad it felt like there was a 5lb weight on my chest. All of this hit me in the span of 4 days and started mild but progressivly got worse. Out of all the times I have been sick I can honestly say I have never struggled that much to breathe. My chest hurt everytime it expanded. I knew something was wrong so I decided to go to one of those urgent care places. I went into the clinic and the first thing the doctor said was that I had an audible wheeze and that my lungs were "crackling" when she listened. However since the country hadn't really gotten to the point of great concern with the Coronavirus (this was early March) I wasn't tested and was just given an inhaler, some antibiotics, and some cough medicine. She diagnosed me with a severe upper respiratory infection. I didn't get better until pretty much the end of March. The antibiotics did help me feel better but only marginally by the end of the 10 day round as I was still coughing for weeks with a lot of proudction. Now, I don't know if I had COVID-19, and I am leaning towards "no" since others in my household didn't get sick, but until testing gets better, I'll never know if I was feeling horrible because I had actually caught it. I really hope reliable, widespread testing comes out very soon so all the people that are either asymptomatic or remeber being really sick right before all of the shutdowns started happening can have some peace of mind. Moreover, thats scienctists and medical professionals can have reliable and the data that they need. Take care and stay safe y'all!
Pretty much what happened to me and guess what...it happened to me the first week of March too. I live in Ohio and I'm 64 years old, live by myself and don't really go out much except to shop because I can't stand the cold and it's cold in Ohio in March...lol!
I can relate but my upper respiratory infection was in mid-December and ended being a really nasty case of pneumonia. I have to admit that what interests me is that the COVID cases all sound exactly like my pneumonia... and hate it since I was absolutely miserable during that time. Hi. I had that same thing form Dec-Feb. I'm a 39 yo f whose asthmatic also, crackling and wheezing. 3 rounds of antibiotics, but the first two didn't work, it wasn't a broad enough spectrum that it covered and wasn't until a third round, with higher steriods and my nebulizer that I was able to kick it. Never had a fever but the doc diagnosed me with pneumonia. Crazy right? I had the initial flu test in December the first time I went to emergency clinic and was negative for the flu.

I heard that the pneumonia and flu deaths have gone down a lot since this pandemic and I wanted your take on how cause of death is decided by doctors considering that you can have the flu and covid-19 as well as pneumonia can be something that kills elderly people especially when they are weak. People might think I'm only here to ogle the handsome doctor with the beautiful green eyes but I'm not. That is, I'm ogling the handsome doctor, of course I am, but he is also one of the few persons in the field who only says what he knows and what he knows he explains clearly and directly. So I had covid dec 23 positive by pcr test. Then 6 weeks later zero antibodies on the quantitative test. They said maybe my T cells killed it off before I could develop antibodies. Am I more or less immune in the future? I work in urgent care and I’m exposed everyday I work. Are there studies on this scenario?

You keep saying, "There is no benchmark to know what the numbers we get back from these tests show". That's true, but why don't we use what results we do have, to compare and determine at least an average, or a mark to compare future tests to.
Hi Dr. Mike! I have severe chronic illnesses including asthma and my family has really been pushing that I get the antibody test. I got really sick in early November after I'd been traveling (within the states) with a mystery illness that started with the worst sore throat I've ever had. They tested me for everything they could and everything was negative. I would also spike a fever every single night that would be gone by morning, but the fevers would get around 103 F. Took about two weeks to even start feeling remotely better. I thought about getting it just because my parents are so worried about me and it might make them feel better to know if I already had it. Thanks for these continued updates about the virus. ❤
losahdanny Of course it is only anecdotal, but there were many people with COVID-19 symptoms last year in the US. My aunt contracted an unknown illness in December (Chicago) and passed away from pneumonia. COVID-19 testing was just not available last year, it doesn't mean the virus wasn't around. There was a huge jump in flu/pneumonia related deaths in late 2019. Just as there is no proof it was COVID-19, there is no proof that it wasn't either.
See..my husband and I got extremely sick in mid December with the exact same symptoms as covid. We were sick sick for about 1-2 weeks and the cough lasted for about 2 weeks after that. It was the worst cough I’ve ever had. We had headaches, body aches, fevers, and could barely catch our breaths. We are wondering if the coronavirus hasn’t been around for awhile longer than they are saying

In other words it's a scam virus. It could be any virus because they have yet to fulfill Koch's Postulates for determine a novel virus or bacteria. We know it's a scam and so does this sleezy doctor in the video.
Freyja Richardson I think there is a difference between knowing something and explaining something. I know calculus but being able to explain it is the hardest part. I’m not sure if this is your case but it is with mine and I enjoy watching videos of people explaining it. It helps me train myself to be more articulate so I can teach it to someone else.
My 78 year old coworker had all the signs of covid-19 in late February, but at the time was only clinically diagnosed with Bronchitis (which he fully recovered from) and to my knowledge was never tested for covid. I had all the symptoms in early March (likely caught it from him), but never got tested either. At the time everyone still thought coronavirus was a fairytale. I've been wanting to get the antibody test mainly so I can donate plasma but they're just not readily available yet. I live in New York (Long Island), which is one of the main hotspots.
I'm from NY as well and I was very sick in early February with symptoms that are very similar to covid but nobody was testing for that here back then. I want to donate plasma as well so I hope the antibody tests become available soon.
DamianWard96 call around to your blood banks. My area is probably 1/4 size of just half of NYC and they are now screening for confirmed donors. They are also putting unconfirmed on waiting lists. Understandably, right now they just want confirmed cases. But eventually, they will be opening testing for those who were never confirmed but possibly infected for the purpose of plasma donors and other various studies.
I had all the symptoms two weeks ago. I couldn’t breathe, had a fever, developed a dry cough, fatigue, aches , chills...and a few other off symptoms. I tested with the nose swab, and it was negative. I had to go to the ER with low blood pressure, low heart rate, and had a lot of issues with chest pain and breathing problems. Two doctors told me that they thought I had it, and I was then told that the rate of false negatives with this test is pretty high. Today I am mainly getting the antibody test to see if I had any signs at all outside of the symptoms that I had it or not. I am still having a lot of issues two weeks later but am breathing much better.

That’s why it’s no longer treated like a “childhood rite of passage” and a vaccine as created. The chicken pox virus lies dormant in your nerve cells long after you recover and some unfortunate individuals may eventually develop Shingles, which is so much worse than Chicken Pox.
I live in Namibia, a country of 2.5 Million, but with the second lowest population density of any country at a little less than three people per square kilometer. We are undergoing lockdowns similar to New York city, with the whole country’s school shut down or online, non-essential businesses closed and permits are needed for travel between towns and within the capital, as well as all international travel except for cargo and nedical reasons has been halted. We have less than twenty cases. This reaction is understandable since the whole country has 28 ventilators. You would expect a first world country like America to, you know, not act like a developing nation with a currupt, unqualified leader? America doesn’t seem like a first world country right now, but like a third world country with a Gucci Belt.

Hey, I am sure it doesn't apply to you, but in the UK they are counting people who have died in Hospitals and frontline workers. The number doesn't include thise who have passed away in their homes or the elderly in care homes. So the number they gives is is less than the actual number.
Actually, testing is showing the opposite. Actually, many more people have been infected whether mild symptomatic or no symptoms than are counted because testing is being limited to those who have more severe symptoms or have been exposed to those. When a larger study was done in CA, there were A LOT more ppl testing positive. If that is true, then the death rate is much lower, like the common flu. I'm not saying we shouldn't have quarantined, and that it isn't dangerous. It is dangerous to a few, but is very contagious and wide-spread. The amount of deaths is due to the number of ppl who have contracted it and not due the high percentage dying in a small number of infected.

Hey Dr. Mike, I’m a 13 year old girl and I have a question for you it’s okay if you can’t answer it! In December, I was at a family members house making some goods and having fun. However, the next day I got sick. I had a some what mild fever for 2 weeks until it got to 104. I’ve went to the doctors 4 times and they all said it was viral. I got chest x-rays but nothing shown up. I’ve also had a terrible cough. The cough started after 3 days. To be more specific, I’d have a coughing fit for about 5-10 minutes which made me having a difficult time breathing. I also developed a rash on my arms with little bumps, but that went away after a couple days. I don’t know what happened, my mother thinks I got the virus back in December but when I took a antibody test at the doctors, it came back negative. I felt so miserable during those 2 weeks, I’m not trying to be dramatic but I felt like I was going to die or something. They didn’t give me no medicine, I just had to suffer for 2 weeks. Do you have any idea what I could’ve had? I would really like to know.

I don't think the number is as high as the media is reporting. There will always be exceptions to the rule as there are individuals who are immunocompromised and have not completely cleared the infection when they thought they did.

It's doubtful whether there actually is such a 'growing number'. Positive tests after negative tests don't automatically mean 'reinfection'.
Higher likelihood of inaccurate test result instead. The levels were either too low to detect or the sample was inadequately taken. This sampling technique requires the health provider to stick a long Q-tip through the nasal passage all the way to the back of the throat. Instant gag reflex triggered and it is not a pleasant experience to the patients either.

Okay. So my friend had Covid 19, was in ICU for almost a week and it was touch and go for a bit. He recovered, thankfully. He was discharged with instructions to self quarantine for 14 days. Once the 14 days were up, he planned a small get together with five people to celebrate his recovery. (btw, wouldn’t recommend) He read about people testing positive later, so before he had this event, he got swabbed nasally again and tested positive for the Corona Virus. He was 16 days after recovery and still tested positive. He’s now an asymptomatic carrier for the coronavirus. He cancelled his plans. Ten days later, he went to his doctor to get swabbed again to see if he could safely go grocery shopping. He tested positive. That’s now 26 days after he recovered that he’s still actively carrying this virus around through respiratory droplets. He won’t leave his house, naturally. If most people that recover think they’re Golden after 14 days, some are mistaken. What are your thoughts on this? There are people that are claiming to be reinfected, but is it actually that they just carry this virus long term and can infect people for months after?! I’m super interested to hear your opinions on this case. Antibody testing is great, but if they’re actively carrying this in their nasal passages for extended periods of time, what can even be done?

What I've read on that topic was that it's possible that the virus is still present but not infectious anymore. But that this is something they still need to look into.

I believe it was in South Korea they've found that 90 people thus far who had it and cleared it, then came down with it again some time later, so they are investigating whether the virus can "reactivate" (vs. a person being "reinfected"), and that perhaps immunity only lasts a few months. But as Dr. Mike said, there are so many unknowns at this time. I'm also replying with the hope that he will address the OP's question.

we have yet to assess whether there are any risks of long term complications after having covid-19.
They've already reported that people who suffered from severe symptoms have permanent lung structure damage.

Problem #4: You could have antibodies and still be infectious for a little while. (Edit: added "little"; see people's replies for more specific info.)
Typically serological assays are set up to detect both the IgG and IgM response. A positive IgG response indicates the virus is still active in the body. IgMs are the 'memory' antibodies. But yeah, you're right could have both types and still be fighting the infection.

My country (Indonesia) are using rapid antibody test for screening positive patients, with RT-PCR follow up confirmation if they test positive. So yeah, we are trying to find infectious patients using the antibody test.
The poor quality of that test right now probably means a lot of missed cases. Not to mention it takes time for building the antibody (so we miss early infection) or a case where the patients already recovered (never reported as positive as only RT-PCR positive tests are reported).

Nothing adds up about this plandemic. The number of deaths are manipulated so much it is impossible to know if anyone died of a disease at all. Vaccines help you by weakening the virus toxins to alert antibodies and also induce memory b cells to fight against infection in the future.
I think one of the reasons people are having a hard time with this pandemic is that so much of it is about statistics, and most people don't have the training or the skill to understand statistic data. I have the training and it's still something i have to focus on, I can't imagine my friends who ditched numbers after high-school math. This is why people either dismiss it or panic. They have a hard time keeping the notion that everything is a probability game, than less chances aren't ZERO chances but are better than MORE chances, and that every single action is a new roll of the dice.

Don't forget media plays a big part in this as well (like, oddly enough, like any shooting) where media almost always shine their lights on the negative sides and their tendency to use scare tactics and over dramatization of the numbers like how they over emphasize the number if infected but give little to no attention or just blatantly use smaller text on the numbers for those recovered and those killed while also not elaborating the numbers (like say showing the vast majority that died are either old, has weak immune systems or were already suffering another illness).
And don't get me started on how they write their headlines with the vast majority of normies who "read" the news only read the headlines and would mostly just read the first paragraph which are usually just filled with stupid words used by the writer.
I studied research methodologies (statistics) in my undergrad, it is really difficult to stay on top of the numbers. For my part I take the numbers as incomplete and not representative of any final point. We can't yet, the numbers are still evolving. Now, try explaining that to someone who dropped numbers and logical reasoning in high school.

MRnaimadi that would be a false negative, which is not as dangerous here because it doesn’t cause a non-immune person to believe they are immune. False negatives are a much bigger deal when testing for the virus itself, because the test could say you’re fine when you’re actually carrying and transmitting the virus
It was technically mathematically incorrect, for instance if we assume 0% false negative rate and 5% false positive rate, like I believe was the case in the video, and assume 100 people, 50 of which are immune, then the expected number of positives should be 52.5 instead of 55.
But I am just being pedantic. The presentation illustrated the problem well regardless of wether it was 100% accurate, or only 90%.

I think I started trusting dr Mike more than the WHO when in one of his videos he said “Covid 19 is technically a pandemic”. Back then WHO was still not ready to declare it a pandemic.
WHO screwed the pooch bad. The whole point of the WHO was to stop a pandemic like this from happening. I give them a 3 out of 10 on that. After this crisis is over I'm hoping an investigation will reveal exactly what happened and major reforms are done to make sure this doesn't happen again.

My boss sent me home because he though I could test positive for the virus (I was having spring time allergies at this time, but no couching just sneezing). He told me to get a test taken in order to come back to work, however I wasn't allowed to get a test from anywhere around be because I had no symptoms...
Call your doctor to get permission to be tested.
Try getting a note from your boss
File for unemployment or file a complaint with your state labor department because he's basically just laid you off without cause.
You can even get a letter from the doctor clearing you for work. Since your boss is not a doctor and only a doctor can order a test it should suffice. If not follow the advice of Mason Cooper!!!

So basically we think that I have had covid19 in late January after visiting Bergamo which is the epicenter in Italy. The only symptom that I had was red/purple lesions on my toes which is a symptom in young people like me (16yrs old). I also had head aches and a slight cough. And my mother also had a dry cough for about two weeks after me. This was before covid became a big thing. I went to about 5 doctors and nobody knew what was wrong with me. How do I know if I had covid19 and can my blood help people if I’m hyper immune. Like this so that he’ll see this

There's a bit of an inaccuracy in the section at 4:27
False positive rate is determined only by False Positives and True Negatives by the following formula: FPR = FP/(FP + TN)
it is *not* calculated by using the entire tested population.
To put this into context, if 100 people are tested and 5 of them are true positives and the FPR is 5% then you'd take 5% of the 95 remaining people which will be either TN or FP cases. The change is small for lower prevalence (95*0.05 = 4.75). This gives an accuracy 51.3% (as opposed to 50%)
*However*, as prevalence of the virus increases, assuming the FPR does not change, say we have 50 True Positive cases then the remaining 50 are either TN or FP. This implies that only 5% of the 50 remaining population are FP (50*0.05 = 2.5). This gives an accuracy of 95.2% (as opposed to 90%) That's a huge 5% difference in accuracy!

It does not involve making up a new, incorrect way of doing things that will always give the wrong (false) answer just because it happens to be simpler, and then claiming that this is the mathematically correct way to do it, which is what Dr. Mike did in the video. That is just called being wrong. Dr. Mike didn't actually show any calculations (because this isn't a math tutorial), only the results of several steps of calculations, so doing the calculations the mathematically correct way and then putting those results on the screen instead would literally not have made the video any more complex or difficult to understand, it just would have required he understand the correct formula to use, which it appears he did not. His video presented factual errors deserving of correction, and correction was given in the comments. If he could put a note in the video with the correction that would be even better. Since this is ostensibly an educational channel (or at least an educational video on an entertainment channel), it really doesn't make sense to defend him presenting false information.

No reason to test really it doesn't server any use to you. It could help people make data about the virus but no use for the person getting the test.

I wondered the same thing. I got cold sores when I was little but didn't get chicken pox until I was 22. I have never had shingles my my son did when he was around 4 and he had the chicken pox vaccination.
My mom told me I had chicken pox 3 times. Hope I don't have a bad case of shingles when I am older.
I had chicken pix twice , once as an infant, once at 15, both times mild. I also had to be revaxed for Typical childhood vaxes as I showed no immunity in a quantitative test. I was revaxed as an adult and showed only very low immunity when tested again. I must be a human anomaly.

Here's my story. Just wanted to share to see if anyone can relate. In early March, I became sick about a week and a half after I finished attending this huge college event (I'm 20) with people from all over the country. My symptoms were body aches, *really* bad coughing that eventually moved down into my chest, sore throat, a low-grade fever (but it only lasted for a very short time) and difficulty breathing that was so bad it felt like there was a 5lb weight on my chest. All of this hit me in the span of 4 days and started mild but progressivly got worse. Out of all the times I have been sick I can honestly say I have never struggled that much to breathe. My chest hurt everytime it expanded. I knew something was wrong so I decided to go to one of those urgent care places. I went into the clinic and the first thing the doctor said was that I had an audible wheeze and that my lungs were "crackling" when she listened. However since the country hadn't really gotten to the point of great concern with the Coronavirus (this was early March) I wasn't tested and was just given an inhaler, some antibiotics, and some cough medicine. She diagnosed me with a severe upper respiratory infection. I didn't get better until pretty much the end of March. The antibiotics did help me feel better but only marginally by the end of the 10 day round as I was still coughing for weeks with a lot of proudction. Now, I don't know if I had COVID-19, and I am leaning towards "no" since others in my household didn't get sick, but until testing gets better, I'll never know if I was feeling horrible because I had actually caught it. I really hope reliable, widespread testing comes out very soon so all the people that are either asymptomatic or remeber being really sick right before all of the shutdowns started happening can have some peace of mind. Moreover, thats scienctists and medical professionals can have reliable and the data that they need. Take care and stay safe y'all!

I can relate but my upper respiratory infection was in mid-December and ended being a really nasty case of pneumonia. I have to admit that what interests me is that the COVID cases all sound exactly like my pneumonia... and hate it since I was absolutely miserable during that time. Hi. I had that same thing form Dec-Feb. I'm a 39 yo f whose asthmatic also, crackling and wheezing. 3 rounds of antibiotics, but the first two didn't work, it wasn't a broad enough spectrum that it covered and wasn't until a third round, with higher steriods and my nebulizer that I was able to kick it. Never had a fever but the doc diagnosed me with pneumonia. Crazy right? I had the initial flu test in December the first time I went to emergency clinic and was negative for the flu.
My 67 year old mom. Thought she had the flu(didn't go check). Started coughing. They said she had bronchitis. I'm not so sure. This was in January or February.

I heard that the pneumonia and flu deaths have gone down a lot since this pandemic and I wanted your take on how cause of death is decided by doctors considering that you can have the flu and covid-19 as well as pneumonia can be something that kills elderly people especially when they are weak. I also heard that sometimes doctors are putting covid-19 as cause of death even for patients who were already terminally ill with cancer or other major diseases that was close to killing them or making them super weak. So I had covid dec 23 positive by pcr test. Then 6 weeks later zero antibodies on the quantitative test. They said maybe my T cells killed it off before I could develop antibodies. Am I more or less immune in the future? I work in urgent care and I’m exposed everyday I work. Are there studies on this scenario?

Hi Dr. Mike! I have severe chronic illnesses including asthma and my family has really been pushing that I get the antibody test. I got really sick in early November after I'd been traveling (within the states) with a mystery illness that started with the worst sore throat I've ever had. They tested me for everything they could and everything was negative. I would also spike a fever every single night that would be gone by morning, but the fevers would get around 103 F. Took about two weeks to even start feeling remotely better. I thought about getting it just because my parents are so worried about me and it might make them feel better to know if I already had it.

losahdanny Of course it is only anecdotal, but there were many people with COVID-19 symptoms last year in the US. My aunt contracted an unknown illness in December (Chicago) and passed away from pneumonia. COVID-19 testing was just not available last year, it doesn't mean the virus wasn't around. There was a huge jump in flu/pneumonia related deaths in late 2019. Just as there is no proof it was COVID-19, there is no proof that it wasn't either.
See..my husband and I got extremely sick in mid December with the exact same symptoms as covid. We were sick sick for about 1-2 weeks and the cough lasted for about 2 weeks after that. It was the worst cough I’ve ever had. We had headaches, body aches, fevers, and could barely catch our breaths. We are wondering if the coronavirus hasn’t been around for awhile longer than they are saying

As a medical person, I would love to see you answer these 3 questions for any virus at all : 1. Is there an electron micrograph of the pure, and fully characterized virus?
2. What is the name of the primary specialist, peer reviewed paper in which the virus is illustrated and its full genetic information described?
3. What is the name of the primary publication that provides proof that a particular virus is the sole cause of a particular disease?

My 78 year old coworker had all the signs of covid-19 in late February, but at the time was only clinically diagnosed with Bronchitis (which he fully recovered from) and to my knowledge was never tested for covid. I had all the symptoms in early March (likely caught it from him), but never got tested either. At the time everyone still thought coronavirus was a fairytale. I've been wanting to get the antibody test mainly so I can donate plasma but they're just not readily available yet. I live in New York (Long Island), which is one of the main hotspots.
I'm from NY as well and I was very sick in early February with symptoms that are very similar to covid but nobody was testing for that here back then. I want to donate plasma as well so I hope the antibody tests become available soon.
DamianWard96 call around to your blood banks. My area is probably 1/4 size of just half of NYC and they are now screening for confirmed donors. They are also putting unconfirmed on waiting lists. Understandably, right now they just want confirmed cases. But eventually, they will be opening testing for those who were never confirmed but possibly infected for the purpose of plasma donors and other various studies.

I had all the symptoms two weeks ago. I couldn’t breathe, had a fever, developed a dry cough, fatigue, aches , chills...and a few other off symptoms. I tested with the nose swab, and it was negative. I had to go to the ER with low blood pressure, low heart rate, and had a lot of issues with chest pain and breathing problems. Two doctors told me that they thought I had it, and I was then told that the rate of false negatives with this test is pretty high. Today I am mainly getting the antibody test to see if I had any signs at all outside of the symptoms that I had it or not. I am still having a lot of issues two weeks later but am breathing much better.

You are correct though, Chicken Pox is a type of Herpes virus. That’s why it’s no longer treated like a “childhood rite of passage” and a vaccine as created. The chicken pox virus lies dormant in your nerve cells long after you recover and some unfortunate individuals may eventually develop Shingles, which is so much worse than Chicken Pox.

Hey, I am sure it doesn't apply to you, but in the UK they are counting people who have died in Hospitals and frontline workers. The number doesn't include thise who have passed away in their homes or the elderly in care homes. So the number they gives is is less than the actual number.
Actually, testing is showing the opposite. Actually, many more people have been infected whether mild symptomatic or no symptoms than are counted because testing is being limited to those who have more severe symptoms or have been exposed to those. When a larger study was done in CA, there were A LOT more ppl testing positive. If that is true, then the death rate is much lower, like the common flu. I'm not saying we shouldn't have quarantined, and that it isn't dangerous. It is dangerous to a few, but is very contagious and wide-spread. The amount of deaths is due to the number of ppl who have contracted it and not due the high percentage dying in a small number of infected.

Everytime a new electric upgrade is added to the environment, people drop like flies. Something people forget about the 1918 flu is that that was the first time electric wires were getting run through cities. We are more interconnected with the electricity around is than we think. Not to mention nutrition was a big issue back then than it is now.

Hey Dr. Mike, I’m a 13 year old girl and I have a question for you it’s okay if you can’t answer it! In December, I was at a family members house making some goods and having fun. However, the next day I got sick. I had a some what mild fever for 2 weeks until it got to 104. I’ve went to the doctors 4 times and they all said it was viral. I got chest x-rays but nothing shown up. I’ve also had a terrible cough. The cough started after 3 days. To be more specific, I’d have a coughing fit for about 5-10 minutes which made me having a difficult time breathing. I also developed a rash on my arms with little bumps, but that went away after a couple days. I don’t know what happened, my mother thinks I got the virus back in December but when I took a antibody test at the doctors, it came back negative. I felt so miserable during those 2 weeks, I’m not trying to be dramatic but I felt like I was going to die or something. They didn’t give me no medicine, I just had to suffer for 2 weeks. Do you have any idea what I could’ve had? I would really like to know.

I wanna let you know that one of your older videos saved my friend from her rash 5 months ago. She was watching one of your older videos and then realized that she needed to go to a doctor because of a rash she had on her body. She got the right meds for it and was fine after a couple days.
