- The Light Rail system in Rio de Janeiro is a modern, wireless system using a ground power rail. The Alstom Citadis 402 low-floor trams are attractive, quiet, and low floor.
I also included various other train in Rio de Janeiro including the metro (subway), commuter rail, tram, rack railway, and buses.
I loved my time in Rio, and want to go back and explore more of this fascinating city!
Hi again, Luke! The next time I go to Rio, I will take a ride on the VLT. But look: at 04:00 of this video, you was passing through Cinelândia. At 04:10 you can see Teatro Municipal (Municipal Theater), with that golden ornaments at the top. Behind the Theater is where three buildings collapsed in January 2012. Three old buildings, occupied by homeless people. 22 deaths. Tragic, I know! At 07:35, we can watch a "foot-voley" game. Traditional on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro. It is not uncommon to find famous retired soccer players practicing such a sport. Wonderful video.

some systems survived like MUNI in SF, but suffered when Boeing thought they could build Streetcar better than the PCC.

I went to Rio in April/May 2019 and will be back again as my mother-in-law and most of my wife's family lives there.
It is a beautiful city, but very confusing. Both the light rail and subway system were the best things they did for the Olympics that the people truly can use. And it's great that they are building more lines.
My wife was telling me that they got new tram cars to corcovado that have a/c as when I was there they were not and I remember it was super muggy out. Can't wait to see the new tram cars

2:43 Trams are supplied by ground level power system or batteries with ground-based charging system. Pantographs are only used in workshop.

Next you go to Brazil can you cover the legendary Curitiba BRT system. Maybe even look up these Urban Cable Car systems that's taking off (No pun intended lol) in many cities in Latin America.
I would love to explore these systems! I actually might make a short video of the cable car system that used to run in Rio de Janeiro in the favela. I rode it twice when it was running, and I was sad when it closed.
Unfortunately the BRT system in Curitiba hasn't been effective in a while. It was a great solution back when it was created, but now it's really outdated.
Thank you for posting this video. Rio de Janeiro has an interesting variety of rail based transport systems. The catenary free tram system is aestethically more pleasing and from what I understand the third rail does not pose any danger unlike the ones used in some metro rail systems.

Wow you guys actually pave your streets unlike here in pothole city, Southern California. Politicians too busy pocketing the money for themselves even though we pay billions in taxes.
I believe that these problems exist all over the world, even in countries as rich and developed as the USA there are dirty politicians and thieves who do not take care of the nation's progress. In Brazil there is a lot of neglect with housing, look at the favelas that is the sole fault of dirty politicians and thieves who did not create decent housing policies and so people built houses in the hills anyway.

Simplesmente Natã yes, it was on Sunday I believe. It was also during the end of Carnival so they were blocking streets off. One tram I rode didn’t go to the end of the line.

Um vídeo muito bem feito e que mostra o Rio de Janeiro numa perspectiva positiva e moderna, não sou do Rio, mas já fiz essa viagem de ônibus saindo da rodoviária do Tietê em São Paulo indo pela rodovia Dutra até o Rio, foi uma viagem incrível num tempo frio de São Paulo, espero que um dia no futuro exista projetos urbanístico que possam refazer as favelas e acabar com as periferias do RJ.
