    Great video and instruction, David! You said you like to use a small photo so you can see the whole of it, which makes a lot of sense. Question: How can you use your pencil to measure your outline against the original photo when the face you are drawing is larger than the original photo?

    Thanks a lot for this video, it was really helpful. But I don't understand what and how you take measurements with your pencil. Since your reference and your work is not the same size how do you now know the correct proportion

    • @DavePortersArt
      @DavePortersArt  3 года назад

      It is the same proceedure that I use to draw from life. I use the tip of the pencil and the distant from my thumb to compare. I work from the centre point and work outward from there so it is all relative. I have other video on free Hand drawing in my channel so be sure to check them out too. ☺🙏

    Loving the longer slower video. Looking forward to part 2 where I hope you will explain a little more your colour choices, mixing, base layers etc. Trying my first ever pastel portrait and have to say whilst I don't fully understand what I am doing, using the primary colours for the most part has enabled me to get close to reference colours something I had no idea of how to even start. Without you tutorials I wouldn't understand the basics, I would be struggling to find a similar pencil colour! Thank you for sharing your process usually most tutorials don't reveal their secrets or skills quite so openly.

    I currently use the grid method. I also prefer to draw on cheap drawing paper first then I use tracedown to transfer my drawing to Pastelmat. I just don’t want to damage the tooth. It’s very inspiring to watch you free hand this way. I could give it ago on my cheap drawing paper.

      Hi Gillima... it would be great practice... sounds a great idea. This method I use is the same one for drawing from life... so great practice for that too. It is worth exploring as it would give you so much freedom. Take care btw way the pencil I use and putty rubber would not damage the tooth if you use the pencil lightly. He is the number of the Carbothello great pencil I prefer to use... you could buy it separately online.... Carbothello no. 1400/726. I have a Amazon link to buy my preferred putty rubber in any of my pastel video description, 🙏

      I used to feel that way when I was younger. In reality nothering is really ours. I just observe what happens and take no credit for the result. So be giving all that comes up... it leaves more space for new developements to manifest. If we hold on to something that we think is precious to us it holds us back... can lock you in the mind too much (ego). I try to keep open and empty. All the very best to you... 🙏🙏
