I saw Iris in panto (yes, really) with Ted Rogers when I was 12 years old at the New Theatre in Cardiff in January 1972. I remember nothing else about that night except that when she sang I was utterly transfixed and it has stayed with me for 52 years. The power of a human voice...
I used to watch my baby daughter playing in the garden and this would play through my mind. I was a very young dad, struggled to keep home and hearth together through the early Thatcherite years, but no matter how hard things got, my baby daughter got me through and I fought hard to keep it all together, and succeeded! She's 46 years old now and we were estranged many years ago, but I'll never forget the joy and happiness we found in each others company when I was a young, teenage dad and she was my baby toddler. I'm crying now....
Iris, you are also beautiful, I even gave you a gentle helping hand as you went up the steps into the audience, whilst singing in your show, on a cruise, my moment of unforgettable pride!
I was once Iris William's backing organist in the late 1970s, when she was working with the Eric Delaney Band and the comedian Jerry Stevens at the Pressed Steel Fisher Club in Birmingham, and also at a second gig somewhere deep in the West Midlands a bit later on. It is one of those experiences I treasure, and glad I had the opportunity to do. Best wishes Iris.....
Iris will never know that I have loved her since hearing this record way back when. I hope that she is well and enjoying life. I will take this disc on to my desert island! Love you iris.
A beautiful song - sung by one of the best. Her vibrato, intonation and flawless phrasing make her a stand out. I've seen her live and she is always wonderful - like few others. She sings heartfelt standards like no one else,
I remember this from the 70's and this instantly brought back memories of almost 40 years ago. Cleo Lane wrote the words and also recorded it but this was the popular version. Lovely voice and so good to take a trip down memory lane, a bit sad - but beautiful as I approach mid 60's and the last time I heard it I was mid 20's.
I don't know the Cleo Laine version. Maybe I should. But I have this one. It's all I need to send me into raptures. How pure. How sweet. Simple gorgeous.
You were the only one on World Tour Saga RUBY who had had a standing ovation as they are a hard crowd re overfed & picky but knew ou were the business. How about theaters here are too fond of imitations we want original artists who will appreciated you, Good Luck. From Stella Dennett
One of the best singers to come out of Wales. She isn't even listed in their top 30 ever performers neither is Dorothy Squires. Who ever compiled this list should be shot.
I've just seen this on totp. I've faintly heard it before but this was in detail. Wow. How amazing. Was it given the credit it deserves at the time? I wasn't born then.
@@lilme7052 yes, or a kind of a nice memory maybe. i like discovering old classic songs like this on BBC4 usually on a friday nite on an old TOTP. nina simones " lonesome cities" i discovered this way, not totp maybe. i enjoyed when they showed a load of old shirley bassey specials each week about a year ago.
Beautiful voice. Just discovering her through a documentary on Mabel Mercer. I wonder if Jane Olivor was influenced by her? Jane sounds a lot like her in style.

Back in the 1980's saw Iris in concert at Blazers Windsor, also starring that night was Joe Longthorn, it was a lovely evening.

What was she? A contralto? Her voice seems deeper than that. But absolutely wonderful.
Cavatina By John Williams

Theme from The Deerhunter.
This is really Cavatina
This song came into ecestance as a Classical Guitar piece, anyone know the original title?
Craig Browning cavatina
Cavatina, I think.
She died a death when the press compared her to Shirley Bassey. She was drilled out. Show-biz snuffed. A reason for that.
In what way is she like Shirley bassy
@@ashleywilliams1820 Nobody said she was like Bassey - she was COMPARED to Bassey.
Hyfryd iawn Iris!
Cymraes hefyd!!
