I always felt sorry for Thomas right from the beginning , he didn’t choose to be what he is , but I think he feels because he is that way that he’s not as good as everyone else . It’s sad that people are so judgemental . I have someone in my family that is gay , and I have to say that she is the sweetest , kindest person i’ve known , so I think until you walk in someone shoes , don’t judge .
It was illegal and he was saying it to his employer...really it was very gutsy of him. I think of the effort it took to reach that point of self acceptance in that time period.
“Does his lordship know about this?” “No.” “Then I’m gonna tell him!” “And how would you do that without telling him the rest of it?” Funny thing is, Grantham (along with Mary) _already_ knew Thomas was gay, but kept him on regardless. It’s kind, but at the same time illustrates their difference on position, as back in that day you could basically “afford” to be gay, if you had enough sway to bribe the authorities. Thomas, however… does not.
When Lord Grantham was going to America he took Thomas with him as his valet. Lady Mary said 'He will enjoy that, all the young stewards strutting along the boat deck" Lord Grantham was surprised she knew.
I love everyone's reaction in the beginning. Even Mrs Hughes was all sugar and honey cause he's so pretty Also I find it interesting that Jimmy wasn't gonna say anything in the beginning if I remember correctly - he just felt obligated to condemn Thomas because someone saw them and it could be very bad news for him if people thought he was gay. He's not just a raging homophobe who is disgusted by Thomas. As with everything in Downton Abbey, it was more nuanced than that.
So I started Downton Abbey in the beginning of June and recently finished. I liked him from the start, even though I wasn't supposed to because of how foul he could be. I'm really excited to see him in the movie FINALLY get a bit of happiness.
Also to all the homophobes in this comment section, it’s actually “man shall not lay with boy.” The “man shall not lay with man.” Was actually a mis translation from Latin to German it also means the Bible says pedophilia is wrong, and also LGBT+ exists in multiple species in nature, so stop trying to justify your hatred as “the words of god” when in fact it’s just your bigotry. To the rest of you happy pride 🏳️🌈
@Hélène Kuragina - Notice how most of these sanctimonious homophobes whom you speak of don't criticize Lord Grantham for cheating on his wife, which clearly goes against one of their most fundamental Commandments, "Thou shalt not commit adultery." These homophobes prove to be hypocritical and morally corrupt, if not outright laughable, with their biased judgments and indignation.
After I read that there would be a movie I started rewatching the show again. This time Thomas has become one of my favorite charecters ( Sybil will always be my number one though) but he is the most realistic to me and after coming to terms with a part of who I am I can relate. I really hope he will get his happy ending.
The law has changed and the moaners will eventually die out or decide to stop whining because they didn't get their own way. Such is the way of things.
Oh yes, a lot has changed. In the U.K. in the 1920's, you go to prison for being gay and now one can be legally married and have all the same rights asstraight couples do. Of course, you can't legislate hate and prejudice. Thoseare in peoples' hearts, 'and out of the aboundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh'.
Broadwayon : I don’t think that’s true any longer , of course there will always be racist , judgemental people ,, I don’t think that will ever change , but those people really aren’t even worth worrying about .
BroadwayInHD that’s the whole Idea of Downton Abbey . Just to show that nothing has changed . Britain is the same Old submissive state where ignorance and deference still rule supreme . That’s what brexit is all about .
"you have been twisted by nature into something foul and even I can see that you did not ask for it", ugh, I hate this line so much, not because it's badly written but because it's so real. I had similar things said about me by a homophobic teacher who quote "thought I was evil" but it felt it was her duty to "try and fix me." normally carson is a fairly likeable character but it's so hard to forgive how homophobic he is here, even if it was period accurate.
I am also gay and I sort of disagree, or at least have a different interpretation. Carson isn't being homophobic in that scene. He already knew that Thomas was gay - they all did. If Carson was truly homophobic, he would have fired Thomas immediately and without a reference - and then he would have called the police and had him arrested. Actually, he would have did it a long time ago. But the second part of his sentence is what matters. "Even I can see that you did not ask for it". Yes, calling someone foul is bad, but he actually does see Thomas as a human being and has sympathy for him, which is why he is being allowed to resign with a reference, so that he can easily find work elsewhere. In these times, Carson's response here was the absolute best outcome Thomas could have hoped for.
@Mark Thompkins I'm going to have to disagree. Just because carsons viewpoint was typical of the time period does not mean it was not homophobic. Most people in that era were homophobic. It was a homophobic time. But the show presented us with several other characters who were much more compassionate towards Thomas and did not resort to calling him foul, revolting, threatening him with prison, or telling him he should be horse whipped. Besides, Carson makes his main motivation for letting Thomas go quietly with a good reference pretty clear- he does not want to cause a scandal for the Crawleys. Besides, you can be homophobic and still take a "compassionate" view. The people who wanted to put me in conversion therapy thought they were being compassionate and sympathetic too. They thought they were trying to help. That does not mean they were not homophobic. Likewise, Carson not wanting to totally ruin Thomas's life does not mean he isn't also homophobic. It's not a zero sum game.
The music is everything for this moment, starting at 3:38. Mundane routine with contemplation. Reflection, agony, then making a decision. When he walks though the door: danger! lmao... and of course the suspense of the kiss. Amazing.
Miss O'Brien was the reason of this mess and I completely sympathize with Thomas, but shouldn't he know that you don't go into people's rooms while they're sleeping and kiss them???
"Don't you get clever with me when you should be horsewhipped!" I always laugh at how he delivers that line. Ms. O'Brien was evil AF. She had already got Thomas the bad reference and then she was trying to destroy him by having him arrested.
Doesn't mean that everyone was completely soulless. I'm not saying people were throwing pride parades, but even within the show itself there were empathetic individuals.
James Vega Girl lmao if someone was drugged and raped they wouldn’t be in distress or in pain, by your viewpoint their being raped would be invalidated. The dude was asleep, he wouldn’t have known he was in distress or pain, he wasn’t conscious.
"You have been twisted by nature into something foul ... " I suppose that is slightly more enlightened than believing he had been possessed by evil spirits.
Truly disgusting how they wrote this part of Thomas' storyline... they made him so predatory for no reason. You could say Thomas is bad at reading people, sure, but his advances on Jimmy are very clearly unwanted. And to sneak into his room and sexually assault him while he is asleep? Wouldn't he at least, I don't know, wake Jimmy up first?? It's all so ridiculous and contrived.
No one bats an eye when Prince Charming kisses Sleeping Beauty. Or Snow White. Etc etc. If he genuinely believed Jimmy had mutual feelings for him, I can easily understand the temptation. Have you never been so attracted to someone that it hurt? Hell, fwiw, if I found Ed Speleers sleeping that way, I'd smooch him too, and let the consequences come after, lol.
Poor Thomas! But still, one mustn't kiss anyone in their sleep if there's even a little bit of doubt that they reciprocate your feelings. It was just hearsay that Jimmy liked him back, and they were coming from O'brien of all people?!
Yeah but literally, it's just an innocent kiss. It does no harm. You can just say "hey bro I am not gay, sorry". Chill out. No need to ruin a person's life for such a small thing
@@icydelight3693 I agree, that would be the decent response. if I was jimmy and I woke up to thomas' kiss, yours would be my reaction because i'd like to think i'm open minded, also thomas is a looker. but this jimmy is a ladies' man and he wants to look "macho" so his reaction is not surprising and he'd want to make a scene to affirm to thomas and the world that he's not gay. best to avoid kissing a sleeping person unless you're already in a relationship with them.
Tommy B there’s also no need to assault someone while they’re asleep. Thomas was 100% in the wrong. Actions like this help feed the stereotype of gays being sexual deviants and in this case, it wouldn’t be wrong. If it were a man doing it to a woman, everyone would lose their minds. Don’t turn a blind eye to sexual assault, because the victim is a man.
REWATCHING DEC 2019. Not sure of timeline, but Barrows desire for Lieutenant Courtenay in Series 2 disc 1 (dvd set), blinded by mustard gas, being assisted by Barrow (self inflicted hand injury to get himself home). This is a very short storyline, easy missed. Barrow almost tells Courtenay why he himself has had to fight all his life "for being different".... its not so much Barrows sexual desire for him, more the self identifying of a man that has a huge struggle ahead, yes Barrow clearly desires him, but he clearly knows thats not happening.. its just a deep friendship... its wonderful.... then the blind Courtenay takes his own life... and Barrow is crushed.... wow.. I could watch this dvd forever.. and I do.. xx
Thomas was so lonely that it broke my heart.. and that he took dangerous steps to try to change himself to “normal” was the height of sacrifice toward that end. I wanted to jump through my screen and throttle Carson during the scene when he called him foul and indeed just the general homophobia in that house was frankly palpable. Unfortunately is again repeating itself with historical accuracy.
I always thought it would be interesting if they brought James back as a love interest for...Thomas. After being away so long he discovered how much he missed Thomas and needed to be with him...
I would have liked Thomas to have got it on with that guest Duke (played by Charlie Cox) just once so poor Thomas could have had a few hours of passion.
I always imagined Thomas led a sad solitary existence. He'd get older, lose his looks without having known fulfilling love. He may have resented Downton both upstairs and downstairs because they stood a chance for love and togetherness. Only Thomas was consigned to a solitary or furtive life

@@shaniatreyu9303 true but if he were straight his life wouldn’t have been ruined. He probably would have been fired and that’s that and he could have found another job but since he was gay he was labeled as a deviant or whatever names they had in those days and he wouldn’t have a chance to support himself. There’s a double standard.
O'Brien more than Thomas was the real master of puppets, so to speak. She played everyone against each other habitually, but at least even she was appalled by her decisions usually driven by hatred and jealousy some of the times.
Thomas is a difficult character to sympathize with, but the encounter reminds me of the sage comment of a residence mate in the homophobic 1970s, who was trying to persuade us that "queers" were not naturally strange: society makes them strange. "If a guy asks a girl out, she may say no and that's it. If he shows interest in another guy, he gets a punch in the mouth." Indeed, Jimmy immediately threatens Thomas: "There's nothing between us except my fist if you don't get out." (Granted, too bad more women don't or can't use that line on certain men...)

I remember when I first came Melbourne city in search of myself some 50 years ago. To be outed meant losing one's job, one's dwelling and most of one's friends & family. Newspapers and gossip took great relish in doing this. There was the constant danger of being beaten up with no legal redress. There was a good chance of being imprisoned or put in a mental hospital. In a world of shame and secrecy I can well understand this fellow's desperate, impulsive and unwise approaches. The number of such deep, long and lonely stories in LGBT history are beyond count. Thank God we no longer have to put up with this sort of moral, dishonest BS.
He and Sybil are my two favourite characters! Although I disliked Thomas at the beginning, his character has so much depth and I feel for him as a person
It was wrong of him to kiss him and enter his room without consent or invitation- lol just because he’s gay doesn’t mean it’s okay to make unwanted advances on people!
The real jerk in that episode was Alfred, who, stirred up by his evil aunt, reported Thomas to the police. One can only admire Lord Grantham, who acted so compassionately. Carson was also going to be a jerk, but he trusted Lord Grantham’s judgement and let it go, he even connived with his boss to keep those police officers away from Thomas.
I think they are a bad influence on each other. Alone, I can stand both of them. When together, I hate 'em. I don't know how everyone's hating on O'Brien. I don't know why she is cruel but there must be something to it. I really liked her in the end of s1 and in s2.
Don't worry Thomas! If Jimmy doesn't want you I sure do! Thomas is never more beautiful than when he's vulnerable. And O'Brien. What a snake. When I first started watching this show I thought she was supposed to be Thomas' mother. I love her!
I would have just put Kylie's "Better the Devil You Know" on the gramophone (I think she was around then🤔) to see if his shoulders started moving. It would have cut out all of these protracted guessing games.
Perhaps I'm uneducated but I felt that Downton's portrayal of homosexuality was somewhat inaccurate. They presented Mr. Barrow was being far more blatant with his sexual orientation than I think someone would have acted in 1920's England. I mean, we see the grievous consequences of Barrow being found out in this very clip! I think that Tom or any real man with homosexual tendencies in the 1920 would have been far more trepidatious and careful! So much was at stake!
Obi-Wan Kenobi because of internalized homophobia, Thomas isn’t ashamed of who he is, he has nothing to be ashamed of but he still has to hide it.

Thomas didn't exactly jump at the chance. He was cautious, yet hopeful. But O'Brien spurred him on by telling him how much James raved about Thomas to Alfred and feeding his hope. Maliciously, I might add, for she knew there could never be any relationship between the two men.
@@bymeerabrowngothicroyal That's not exactly what I was saying. I was saying that Tom, as a human with a healthy sense of self-preservation, would not risk his reputation, friendships, career, and even his life all for the sake of his sexuality. The risks far outweigh the rewards at that time and in that society.
They had to be more forward with it to keep the story and plot lines going. It wasn't written to be an ongoing TV soap opera they had to tell his story in a timely manner.
Wish they could have given Thomas some Happiness... perhaps in the upcoming Movie. Now if only the Turkish Ambassador would have been gay - he was HOT!
Regardless of his homosexuality, one does not simply enter someone else’s room at night without their knowledge and accost them in their sleep without a prior understanding that leaves no room for ambiguity. Thomas got what he deserved, but I’m glad he grew more throughout the series.
Stuff like that happened all the time in them days - even up until the late 1980s - if someone helped themselves to you when you were drunk or asleep you might not be happy about it but you didnt do anything about it - you just learned to be more careful - that kinda thing was quite comon at gay parties after everyone crashed out drunk and the straight guy who tagged along for the free booze was always seen as the big prize for those that did that kinda stuff - thank goodness things are different now - or are they ? - i wouldnt know i gave up on parties years ago

It is a movie fool
“I’m not the same as you but I’m not foul.” ❤️ 🧡 💛 💚 💙 💜 🏳️🌈
I always felt sorry for Thomas right from the beginning , he didn’t choose to be what he is , but I think he feels because he is that way that he’s not as good as everyone else . It’s sad that people are so judgemental . I have someone in my family that is gay , and I have to say that she is the sweetest , kindest person i’ve known , so I think until you walk in someone shoes , don’t judge .
It was illegal and he was saying it to his employer...really it was very gutsy of him. I think of the effort it took to reach that point of self acceptance in that time period.
I hated thomas, but man i felt his pain having to hide his reality in that time period. Overall amazing actor being a lovable antagonist.
is this a soap opera?
More or less
“Does his lordship know about this?”
“No.”
“Then I’m gonna tell him!”
“And how would you do that without telling him the rest of it?”
Funny thing is, Grantham (along with Mary) _already_ knew Thomas was gay, but kept him on regardless. It’s kind, but at the same time illustrates their difference on position, as back in that day you could basically “afford” to be gay, if you had enough sway to bribe the authorities. Thomas, however… does not.
How did Grantham and Mary knew he was gay, it's not like he told anyone ??
@@6donie811 Open secrets. Plenty of modern day examples coughLyndseyGrahamcough
When Lord Grantham was going to America he took Thomas with him as his valet. Lady Mary said 'He will enjoy that, all the young stewards strutting along the boat deck" Lord Grantham was surprised she knew.
I love everyone's reaction in the beginning. Even Mrs Hughes was all sugar and honey cause he's so pretty
Also I find it interesting that Jimmy wasn't gonna say anything in the beginning if I remember correctly - he just felt obligated to condemn Thomas because someone saw them and it could be very bad news for him if people thought he was gay.
Well said, none of anyone's business! Go forth in pride!
Tineke Williams love is love, cannot be killed or swept aside. 🏳️🌈
@@bymeerabrowngothicroyal Thats for sure, like I said, no one's business , we are what we are and we are loved regardless of our sexual preferences!
@@bymeerabrowngothicroyal Absolutely, only, lust, exploitation, deception, egoism and abuse is not love.
When I saw him and Jimmy look at each other I thought he's finally gonna get lucky...until jimmy started being like "ugh why is he always touching me"
After I read that there would be a movie I started rewatching the show again. This time Thomas has become one of my favorite charecters
( Sybil will always be my number one though) but he is the most realistic to me and after coming to terms with a part of who I am I can relate. I really hope he will get his happy ending.
I find Rob James Collier to be absolutely amazing! Wish I could see him more often on screen.
Judging by some of these comments, not a damn thing has changed.
BroadwayInHD it’s sad, honestly.
BroadwayInHD that’s the whole
Idea of Downton Abbey . Just to show that nothing has changed . Britain is the same
Old submissive state where ignorance and deference still rule supreme . That’s what brexit is all about .
God damn O'Brien really knew no shame or empathy did she?
O'Brien always felt she belonged upstairs rather than downstairs. Nothing good could come from this fact.
Total snake.
Thomas Barrow is my favorite character on this show.
You’re both right, darlings. lol
In 1918 there was no usage of "Ms." for women, it was either Miss for single gals or Mrs. for a married woman. The "Ms. came into use in 1967.
Last time I noticed this was not 1967.
It's sad that no one tried to understand Thomas. Or to actually see him.
It was the World from the late 1910s to the early 1920s. So of course no one will understand.
@@billcipherproductions1789 Well into the 1960s in Britain
Doesn't mean that everyone was completely soulless. I'm not saying people were throwing pride parades, but even within the show itself there were empathetic individuals.
Ugh. I love Thomas, but kissing someone while they're sleeping is assault... not cool.
Exactly. That's assault and taking someone else's free will. That's a crime.
Was the person in distress or pain? No
@@jamesvega6813 still nonconsensual, but I won't judge him here
James Vega Girl lmao if someone was drugged and raped they wouldn’t be in distress or in pain, by your viewpoint their being raped would be invalidated. The dude was asleep, he wouldn’t have known he was in distress or pain, he wasn’t conscious.
PasCorrect context is needed
I really hope Thomas finds happiness in the new movie.
Echo Echo this was Obrein’s fault
Tommy B there’s also no need to assault someone while they’re asleep. Thomas was 100% in the wrong. Actions like this help feed the stereotype of gays being sexual deviants and in this case, it wouldn’t be wrong. If it were a man doing it to a woman, everyone would lose their minds. Don’t turn a blind eye to sexual assault, because the victim is a man.
@@icydelight3693 finally, someone who makes sense.
I don’t know why Alfred’s “oh my-“ made me laugh
O'Brien getting Thomas' hopes up gets me every time 😂
I always thought it would be interesting if they brought James back as a love interest for...Thomas. After being away so long he discovered how much he missed Thomas and needed to be with him...
Mark P I would _LOVE_ that.
James was a little thug prick.
Proved it when his former female cougar employer tempted him and he got Thomas's backup.
Hola Mark p gracias
I would have liked Thomas to have got it on with that guest Duke (played by Charlie Cox) just once so poor Thomas could have had a few hours of passion.
The duke was the biggest jerk. Thomas and Jimmy had a lot of chemistry.
I am so glad that in the movie Thomas is going to get some !
"I know todays thinking is much more liberal."
"Just a minute. I've never been called a liberal in my life and I don't intend to start now!"
Loved how he found someone in the movie❤️
I always imagined Thomas led a sad solitary existence. He'd get older, lose his looks without having known fulfilling love. He may have resented Downton both upstairs and downstairs because they stood a chance for love and togetherness. Only Thomas was consigned to a solitary or furtive life
I LOVE the word furtive!!!! It is so deliciously descriptive.!!
*Richard enters* _I think not_
jonwiley Why would you do that to him lmao I always thought he’d find another gay guy and go live in the city with him away from Downton.
O'Brien kicks the soap under Thomas this time.
Why the hell is she so cruel though? I thought she and Thomas were friends and that she was pretty tolerant
@@cissyblack3806 because Thomas was the one who put her up for hurting Cora... She put a soap under Cora so she would fall and lose her baby. She then regreted what she did and turned against Thomas for putting her up to this.

So glad I was born at a time when being me is no crime..Imagine how it was for them then, the pain shame and fear.
Alan Turing, who was instrumental in the Allies winning WWII, was prosecuted and convicted for 'homosexual acts' in 1952. Hard to imagine what things were like back then.
I wouldn’t mind Thomas waking me up with a kiss 😍🤤
I really need to rewatch this series
I’m so grateful that we live in the time that we do nowadays where you can’t be fired or worse for being lgbt. I’m not condoning what he did but he didn’t deserve to have his life ruined because of it. It’s amazing that people could actually live with themselves.
No, he would've been fired for the sexual assault on a coworker full stop. Let's be real.
You still can in many countries
I don’t understand why Robert James Collier is not working more. He is so talented!
O'Brien was the most evil character on DA.
She deliberately set Thomas up.
At first I despised Thomas however as the show progressed you get a deeper understanding on why he did some of the things he did.
Ok not to be that person but I swear Jimmy kissed back for a second
i always that they were gonna make jimmy gay but they didn't. he still was a good friend.
I love Thomas so much. He is good boi who needs a hug
i love him too but hes not really a good boi, hes a half good half bad boi imo
Can we Stan Mrs Hughes and Miss Baxter people they actually accepted him 💜💙💚💛🧡❤️
Jim Carter is such an amazing actor
I stopped the video at 5:03 and suddenly barrow has a happy ending to his love story as he kisses sleeping beauty.
Sleeping beauty is a damned apt description, too. 😘
O'Brien more than Thomas was the real master of puppets, so to speak. She played everyone against each other habitually, but at least even she was appalled by her decisions usually driven by hatred and jealousy some of the times.
Will Thomas finally find a true lover?!
Only time will tell.
me
So I ask too. I like his character traits
Marcos Garcia And then the movie came out and I DIED in the theater.
In the movie he did
I just finished the episode where Thomas kisses James. I was literally screaming at my TV telling him not to try it
Thomas is a difficult character to sympathize with, but the encounter reminds me of the sage comment of a residence mate in the homophobic 1970s, who was trying to persuade us that "queers" were not naturally strange: society makes them strange. "If a guy asks a girl out, she may say no and that's it. If he shows interest in another guy, he gets a punch in the mouth." Indeed, Jimmy immediately threatens Thomas: "There's nothing between us except my fist if you don't get out." (Granted, too bad more women don't or can't use that line on certain men...)
update-movie 2019- went to the cinema - WOW, great movie experience, wont be the same on a device on my lap - GO TO THE MOVIES.... even Thomas gets his kiss.... and visits his 1st ever gay club!, someones expecting, someone gets worst ever news, Mosley twats out, and it all kicks off... oh and someones got a gun.... I bought the movie&want my money back..it sucks!!
this show just seems like a giant attack ad for the bourgeois but simultaneously praising them and im here for it
I love Thomas and he deserves happiness and love
jesus that clock scene got everybody shoked
Jimmy was never my favorite but he had great hair ngl
It was wrong of him to kiss him and enter his room without consent or invitation- lol just because he’s gay doesn’t mean it’s okay to make unwanted advances on people!
I cannot imagine how difficult this must have been ...
and O'Brien was so wrong for this ...so wrong .. this could've been fatal ...
I don't miss O'Brian at all.she was.mean and a nasty person
The real jerk in that episode was Alfred, who, stirred up by his evil aunt, reported Thomas to the police. One can only admire Lord Grantham, who acted so compassionately. Carson was also going to be a jerk, but he trusted Lord Grantham’s judgement and let it go, he even connived with his boss to keep those police officers away from Thomas.
But he did assault someone tho, Alfred wasn't the jerk, the jerk was Thomas. He committed an stupid action and should be punished by doing it.
Every character of this series was great.
I hope Thomas become happy. He deserves so much happiness. And I think O'Brien is a bad influence for Thomas
I just want him to be happy
To be fair i love downton abbey but you dont have to watch it for historical accuracy... atleast at the negative parts
Now if only the Turkish Ambassador would have been gay - he was HOT!
timothyj1966 ikr
Theo James 😉❤️
Yes, the Turkish ambassador was hot; but Jimmy (James)...wasn't exactly ugly!
Oooooo O'brian is such a conniver
Regardless of his homosexuality, one does not simply enter someone else’s room at night without their knowledge and accost them in their sleep without a prior understanding that leaves no room for ambiguity. Thomas got what he deserved, but I’m glad he grew more throughout the series.
The fact is homesexuality isn't and should have never been a crime, while sexual assault is a crime.
Sneaking up on someone while they are sleeping is inappropriate in anytime.
