So last week I met a man at a party and within 2 minutes he asked what I do for a living. I told him I’m homeless due to unfortunate circumstances( a fire ) and staying with a friend but that I’m a kind , thoughtful, pay it forward kind of person that volunteers for three different charities . (All the above is true). He snubbed me and couldn’t get far enough away from me all night. Two nights later I again saw him at a restaurant where my date introduced me to him as junior partner at his law firm. All true 😂. He couldn’t get his nose far enough up my ass all night. Wanted my phone number, told me how beautiful I am etc. etc. what a dick head. And you better believe I told him that!
I loved this! You are completely correct we are all working for the money so we can sustain our lifestyles. I worked in the Insurance business for 20 years. I climbed the ladder and made really good money. I had great benefits for healthcare and vacation time. However the place made me sick, literally, which caused me to use the healthcare. And the four weeks of vacation was a must so I could continue to go back into the off. So before I turned forty I decided I was getting out. I now drive a school bus 🚌 😂. I love it. I make very little money but when I cut out everything it was costing me just to go to work I am much better off. My health is so much better out of that high stress job. I make enough money to live and I’m happy with that. And now I get a lot more time off. We are all needed to keep the world going. I don’t look down on any job. Where would we be if someone didn’t come and pick up the trash every week?
I LOVE this. So happy for you to have found your zen.
I love that you shared your story. I actually have thought about driving a school bus. I'm not sure about my driving skills though. I just want something easy without all the stress.
People ask because they really want to know what we earn. We are judged on income unfortunately
Amen to that! Over here in Germany, say these things out loud and people will avoid you.
Spot on. I was a journalist for 10 years and now i work as a carer. Actually now i earn more money for less hours. i had to swallow my ego as my identity was so caught up in being a journalist. i also learned how underwhelmed people are when i tell them i’m a carer. Eye opening.
We TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOUR CONTENT!!! WE ARE NOT OUR JOBS! WE JUST WANT TO HAVE FOOD, CLOTHING, AND SHELTER, SO WE CAN MAYBE SPEND THE REST OF OUR OFF WORK TIME ENJOYING LIFE AND OUR LOVED ONES AND PETS!!!
Dude, I'm 100% with you on this. I just told my boss 4 days ago that I was there because the company paid me. He was going off on a rant about "The Company" and our place in the Company and how grateful he is to be a manager and then he asked me, "You've been working here almost two years. You've got management experience. Why don't you try to move up?"
That set me off on a tirade about how if I wanted to be a manager I'd be one, and how "The Company" is as important to me as what someone I don't know had for breakfast. They pay me to be there, so I'm there and I do the EXACT amount I have to to continue getting paid to be there, but if someone or something better came along I'd be out the door so fast it would leave fire trails like the DeLorean in Back to the Future. He stared at me in utter shock for a minute and then just went into his office.
I have a feeling u need ur own youtube channel. Id subscribe.
@@csleung444 I do have one, and I appreciate it. Lol.
Wow you nailed this one 😆... if I had a quarter for every time I tried to explain this exact thing to people I could retire .. when people ask me what I do for a living I tell them “breathe , circulate blood and occasionally eat and drink water “.... needless to say that gets some looks.
People ask this in the US or Canada. In the Caribbean and Africa we ask about your region, beliefs and your favorite soccer team. 💪
I need to watch this every Monday morning.
Absolutely needed to hear this, I left work from a breakdown, I am 2 weeks unemployed and turned down offers because I'm resting I'm enjoying I'm cooking I'm spending time with my family. I feel guilt every time I meet anyone they ask have u got work yet!!! U are so right I made work my identity that I couldn't settle until I realised I am looking for work to have an answer to the where do u work question...now my answer will be I am enjoying life at the moment work can wait.
So true! I hate when people tend to think that I am only what I am doing or did before in a perspective of work. Now, I am a retired danish woman of 70, but also working part time teaching french online; I enjoy this, but I am still not just my work. To some, I seem to be an aging woman, to others, I am a teacher. Others may view me as just the neigbor next door, or the woman smiling to you when we meet in the community.
We are all much more than our work and should not be judged by it.
Hands down, my favourite RUclipsr. I have a feeling that you will soon make as much money from RUclips as you do from your other income streams.
Wow, thank you!
Hi Nicole - I agree 100% - It's very rude to ask someone what they do for a living. I'm winding down to retirement over the next year. I can't wait! Then if someone asks me what I do for a living I can say "nothing" and see what they say to that!LOL COVID was the best thing that ever happened to me regarding work. Working from home saved me a lot of money , so it was like I got a raise for doing the same work, and gave me more time to sleep and go for walks and bike rides. I didn't realize I had been sleep deprived for decades thanks to commuting. I also realized that I don't really like being around people and prefer to be working from home and not having to experience the constant interruptions and drama of the workplace.
I have never met 1 person in this world that actually likes working or loves their job. Sad. We are all in this world to make money and survive. I speak the truth.
I use to be one of the people who tied their value to their job. Not anymore. I learned the hard way that I am completely replaceable to an employer so now my focus is going where I can earn the most money and grow my skills so I can earn even more money 😂😁
Yesssss. Get it 💪🏼
When I meet new people I ask them about their interests and not their jobs, but they're so used to being asked what they do for a living that that's what they tell me about. And if I try to be more specific about wanting to know who they are as a person, they sometimes think I'm hitting on them. Ugh.
So right on the money, pun unintentional, but appropriate. The generations after mine have clued in to the new work reality. I would only add that if the employer has no loyalty to the employees why should the employees have loyalty to the employer. My first work experience was with a family business at 8 years old.. which unfortunately programmed me to worry more about the job than the money. Bad programming, that I've not been able to undo. 😕
Agree with you 100, but remember, even today, men, more than women, are judged for their income and resource generation capabilities. PS love the passion.!
I’ve always thought that and even tried to guide my kids to do a job “that you don’t mind doing 40 hours a week.” Actually 40 hours a week of stretching it but most people who work a full-time job have to work at least around 40 hours a week. I am retired, but I am a retired registered nurse, which I finally decided to become not right out of high school, but about two years later after working as a nurses aide and realized, I like being around people, and I can handle caring for people, physically. I went to nursing school because being a nurses aid/assistant did not pay enough, not because I wanted to be in a registered nurse and give out medication‘s etc.. I would’ve like to be the bedside caregiver, nurse’s assistant, and make more money to be able to pay my bills. Also, I became a nurse, I believe, because I was in the hospital six weeks, first month of senior year in high school, and I could picture of myself in that setting once I finally sat down and thought about what I thought I could do as a way to earn a living. It was much easier for me to imagine working a job that I had actually been in the middle of for six weeks when I had three knee surgeries, and was in a lot of pain and interacted with nurses and nurses aids, etc. Thanks again for your videos!
I favorited this video. I love all of your content but I'm sending this one to my husband because he gives too much of a fuck about what goes on with his job. He's a union guy, and I understand and appreciate his empathy and making sure people are being treated fairly but all he talks about is work, especially when hanging out with other friends of ours that he happens to work with, and it drives me nuts. They ain't paying him to worry about it off the clock. Upper mgmt at my job believes I'd make a great supervisor. I told the manager I'd consider it when my personal life calms down, but the truth is, no I won't, because I am not giving up working from home, for not much more pay and way more stress. I stick around because there is a good pension and health benefits but the silver lining of the pandemic was that working from home became a permanent thing but it's seniority based. As soon as I get a promotion I'd be the least senior of the sups and I'd have to go back into the office. Fuck that shit. When people ask me what I do I don't like to discuss it because it's a ton of questions. It's a government job for the state where I live. I give as little details as possible. I'd rather talk about what I do for fun or what I'm interested in - beach trips, concerts, making art, thrifting, Halloween things, Rocky Horror, music, cosplay, etc. Work talk is boring. The only time I bring it up is when I hear someone is struggling to find work, I'll let them know how to apply, but that's about it.
❤ I thaught I was alone in thinking like this.
I couldn’t agree more!! I’ve been saying this for years!!
When they ask "why do you want to work here?" I think they want to know why you picked them to apply to over other companies. I work 3 part time jobs and I have two more hustles (babysitting type gigs). I know one of my part time jobs, I applied because it's less than a mile from where I live and my husband and I share the car. The HR lady was talking about making a career out of it. I was like, "I'm already a career nanny, I'm just looking for something flexible and close to my house to make some extra money." Anyhow, that's the answer they're looking for, the fact that you want to make money to pay bills is implied.
Nicole you are definitely food for thought. Glad you showed up on my you tube enticements, I'm watching all your videos, thank you for being you and sharing
Agree sooo much, have re-watched this so many times.
What us really annoying is seeing managers sending emails at like 11pm-2am. Like do these managers have any life at all. Its like some kind of cult in which you can never be as good as them because they are always online 😅
I agree 100% with everything you said. Always felt that way. Despise being at a party and getting asked "what do you do?"
Girl, you made me laugh so hard! You're right on!
🤣 I hate that question so much! I am self-employed and work for many other companies part-time from home. I can't explain what I do and its annoying explaining what I do... when I explain what I do people are confused because it's completely random work 🤣
I have worked 3 decades in a competitive business environment. I must admit that I had relative enjoyment for less than a third of all these years at work. I met some very nice people and I have also met absolute assholes. I knew very young that I would want to retire at a young age. I was able to do so at the age of 50. I had accumulated enough of what is called “fuck you money” and believe me, I was able to say to a couple of bosses that if they continued putting pressure and more work on me that I would quit. It felt so good!
Damn, your video can be cut on qouts! You're so right! 😊
I agree with you, but how do you respond when people ask what you do for a living?
Sometimes I think people just right away ask 'So what do you do' because it's seen as something you're 'supposed' to ask, or it's seen as a safe ice breaker, or they don't know what else to say. And true to the 'why do you want to work here' thing, & you can't say 'for the money' so you have to come up with some bs, & it'll be for a job that nobody is really thrilled to do
Omg, you are sooo right. Btw I can't stop watching your videos :) It is so sad that nowadays our value depends on what we have. Life is so short to waste it being owned by consumerism. I found your channel yesterday and it has become my favorite.
Wow - talk about timing. I'm giving notice at my current job in 2 days after almost 7 years and I'm feeling conflicted. I know I'm on to a better opportunity but feel guilty for leaving my current job. Unreal. 🙃
4:29 fire and brimstone! Love it
I really can't stand the question what do you do for a living. I find this question rude because it's like trying to find out how much money a person earns by trying to find out the type of work they do so that they can get an idea of how much a person might earn, so for me, it's as rude as asking how much I earn but that's how I see it I don't know what other people think about it but at least I think about it that way. The most irritating question ever! In the end a job isn’t the most interesting thing about a person and life is so much more than just that so I agree with what you say.
I'm new to your channel, and I love this content. I love your insights and your willingness to be so blunt.
There are some interesting jobs -- a few months ago I leaned that a regular at my favorite coffee shop is a professional ballerina, but I leaned that after several random chats with her. It wasn't because we asked each other about our jobs
In my early 20s, I worked in NYC, and that city led the curve on job obsession! I would avoid discussing worked when asked "So...what do you do?" If pressed to answer about my job, I'd lie and say that i was a dominatrix. That shut down any further inquiry re: networking.
big facts.
it has always irked me that one of the first questions people ask when they meet another person is “what do you do for a living”. it’s not a secret but it’s also not anyones business. i have a feeling people ask that because they have made their job their identity so it’s a way to talk about themselves, which is actually pretty sad when you think about it.
Exactly, thanks for your thoughts!
Nailed it!!
I hated my job I retired as soon as I could.
I think it was one of the “The Minimalists” who suggested that instead of asking what someone does, ask them what they’re really pumped about at the moment or if they’ve got something exciting upcoming.
I try not to ask people about their jobs but it’s so hard as they will default to that when talking to me. I need to get better at saying it’s irrelevant without sounding a dick 😂
5:37 Bingo! 👏
If you - without thought - ‘pay for’ a qualification to obtain a foothold into a ‘regarded’ profession, you’ve immediately pigeonholed yourself into a career (that you may hate, tolerate, like or love); that seem pretty limited from the outset just there! 😬😳
My wish for everyone approaching the ending of their compulsory schooling is to carefully consider what they really, really want - being extremely sure it is not to impress others - before they make such financial commitments. For warned is for armed everyone (you’ve been told) 😮💨
You are saying what most people think!
100% agree. 🙌🏼
EXCELLENT points!!
Great video and topic! So few people can actually be true to others let alone for them self. I feel so many people I know live in this weird work status mindset and that has filled all of their brain. I have a few criteria what kind of work I’m willing to do and salary is one of the last in that list. If I get what I need to live and I don’t totally hate my job, I’m fine!
I worked in a company basically on the same position for a few years and new joiners were always calling me weirdo for that and wondering why I don't leave. But the truth is, that if you like your job, your coworkers and it pays your bills and your lifestyle, it doesn't really matter on what position you are. People are too obsessed with "the carrier leather" and their job regalias.
My 17 year old son wanted to start learning voice studio editing and there was an admission, where an old lady asked him why he want to learn this, and he said “because of the money” and the young lady just became a heart attack 😂 maybe she was waiting for an answer about how he likes technic and interested in studios work. But my son explained that people learn things actually for making money, even the old lady is here for making money 😊 He is a born realist 😊
The struggle is real
You are singing the song of my soul. OMG! FACTSSSSSS!!!
GEEZ I have been thinking like that for over 60 years!.......watch out for all the stones that are going to be thrown at you though 😃
Amen girl!!
I love this Rant!!!
Questions should be. What do you do for fun?
You’re absolutely right!👍🏽
People always try to find common ground when meeting..having a job is common for alot of people.
This. It’s not like the people seriously want to know how you earn your money. It’s just small talk. It’s not meant to be deep or engaging.
@@ABC-jq7ve They're the vacuous entry level conversation starters you ask a complete stranger in the hope you'll find something you're both interested in talking about enough to continue interacting with each other. You can (probably wrongly) make a lot of broad assumptions about a persons personality based on the type of work they're doing as well.
Yes agree glad you brought it up 👌

Yes!

Amen
I’d like to see what you have to say about this same topic in ten or fifteen years.
Finally, someone who thinks like I do. yes who gives a crap lol I do not like telling people what I do and where I work its really none of their business. And I do not like when people ask what I do. Why are u so nosy?
nice

If you had gotten a degree you probably would have a better paying job and you wouldn’t have to worry about money so much. And sorry, but most men get their fulfillment from their jobs. Nothing wrong with that since men feel the need to be the provider. If everyone was like you and just wanted to stay home and do fun things we would have a totally unproductive society!
Are you a Marxist?
