Cheers Jonathan. I have had my PC for approx. 11 years and I have never backed it up. But, after watching your video and following your step by step instructions I have now backed up my PC. Albeit that I am now 67 years of age, the video gave me clear guidance how to achieve a BACKUP ON A COMPUTOR.
I use my laptop all the time, but I can assure you...I am SO not computer literate! This video gave even ME the steps I needed to get it done. Thank you so much for making it simple!
Ok so those of you saying nothing is happening after you click on back up now for the first time here is how it goes. First it takes a couple hours for the two units to figure out how much space is needed and to configure the back up drive. Once this happens it’s going to read 0% because it hasn’t saved anything yet it’s just configured to save. Click back up now again and the true back up will now start. When it’s done it will say back up complete on the date you did it and you are all done. Now backups should be automatic.
Thank you heaps for making this tutorial Jonathan. Now the learning really begins with backing up!!! I too couldn't work out if my data was overwritten using "from last backup date" or a complete back was made each time. I'm guessing earlier backups drop off if you've set say "keep for a month", so there would always be space for a new back up. Lots of interesting questions from interesting and lovely people.
Thanks. That was the clearest, most straighhtforward presentation I have seen. Just go and look at some of the others. No need for jargon - this is perfect.

After searching the internet for two days, including other RUclips videos, I finally came across your video and the answer I was looking for. Thank you!

Thanks Jonathan! Really well explained and very helpful indeed. When you are selecting folders to back up, can some of the directories on your D: drive (for instance) be included?
Hikari Sakai Depends on a disk. If it’s USB 2.0 or 3.0 USB port. USB 2.0 has a speed around 480 MBits/s so it might take up to 8 hours if you have USB 2.0.
Thank you Jonathan. Very clear video. I have a Samsung all in one which has Windows 10. I’m retired and don’t use it as often but decided to back up to an external drive. I purchased a Maxone (received today) and followed your excellent instructions. My question is when I plugged it in and backed up everything, it now shows 2 drives both named Maxone but I’m unsure why it duplicated. Should I delete one? I’m hesitant to do that, of course. I appreciate any advice.
What I really want to do is backup the OS (windows folder , program files & whatever else is needed) to a secondary hard drive in case the primary one goes corrupt. So that I can just plug in the secondary one and get it working.
I've done most of the things in this video(added folders, changed backup time, etc.) but when I click "Back up Now" it says it's backing up my data but the backup size stays at 0 bytes. Could you please help?
Logan R. The same thing is happening to me... I did all the steps, clicked on Back Up Now, and it still says, Your Data is Not Yet Backed Up. Question... were you ever able to back up your data???? Thanks!
Thank you so much for this. Oddly, it didn't backup much that was on my drive, probably because of OneDrive, but that's fine. I'm just happy to have it backed up before I hit the road! Thanks again!
Thanks for the info Jonathon, very well explained and I think I will now be able to make use of my external hard drive I bought recently. I will take you up on your offer of help with Windows 10 no doubt. Much appreciated.
I would have liked to see more options for how often to back up for instance a week or a month. Daily is a bit much. I am trying to set up some backups for users at my organization who are very computer illiterate and crybabies when it comes to any data loss ie it's IT's fault when they don't back up their files have a system failure and IT can't recover my files. My other concern is that they won't have their external HDD plugged in or computer turned on when it is time for a scheduled backup
Thank you for your very helpful instructions. Just would like to know how to tell when the backup is finished loading. Seems like mine has been running almost an hour.🤔
as i am typing on wrong keyboard.nice video.easy follow. is identical to what i see. thats hard to do.do have questions....how tell if worked? unsure where to find back up.or for that matter what it will even look like. on external drive?i wanted to backup entire computer for when i do something dumb...happens often.
Thanks man, this was the only video I could find that ACTUALLY just simply showed me what I needed to do. Appreciate it. Would you happen to have another video for what to do once you replace the internal hard drive, and have to put what's on the back up back on to the new internal hard drive?
Same here - Good video, but it stops at the critical moment. I push Backup Now, and it says "Backing up your data..." no slider, nothing happens - Would you add a bit to your video?
There is a way to back up the complete physical drive including the OS and all the files on it. This way if you have a total destruction you can put in a new drive and do a full restore. There is a utility built in to the backup that will allow you to create a boot/recovery-repair DVD for starting the PC where the main drive is in failure.
Just to let you know whenever you do this with an external hd docking station it won't let you eject it. Keeps telling you that's it's in use all the time. So it's back to cloud for me.
How can you back up your entire pc, like copy windows 10 itself onto external hard drive. as if it goes down you end up having to do a fresh install anyway starting with windows 10 disc all over again. I am new to this side of things. and I have no idea how to do cloning either.
You were not just good with your assistance instructions -- you were very good! I suspect you solved my problem (I say suspect because tomorrow, as you know, the problem may come back to haunt me again because computers possess their own form of bipolarism multiplied by a gigabyte factor and may repeat problems all over again). Case in point -- My WD Passport was scanning my computer but not giving me the source drive (C: hard drive) to save to the target drive (D: passport external drive). Your video instruction appears to have solved the problem as it gave me the option I was looking for. In either event -- thank you and, yes, I subscribed.
Thanks for this. It was easy to follow. Would this type of backup allow me to restore everything, including the operating system, if my hard drive failed totally?
i'm still using system image on my window 10... Found in windows 7 backup section(on windows 10) To restore a system image, just boot from window 10 install USB... and choose the option to restore from system image. Its saved me a few times. The only problem i found with system image... Is if you replace hard drive, you will need same or larger sized drive. so If you have a 750GB drive imaged, you can't restore it to a 500GB drive.. Even if you only had 100GB on data on the 750GB drive.
FILIPE VIEIRA it should keep storing new backups until the drive is full and then start overwriting the oldest backups with the newest backups. That’s generally how it is supposed to work anyway

Which thus makes the external hard drive practically useless. Unless, the external hard drive is disconnected, in which case it cannot back up automatically.

You will keep your pictures, but you can't boot from there.
You just simplified what some others made hard work!!! Thanks Very Much Jonathan
Does the external hard drive always need to be plugged in? I keep it in a separate location and backup my computer every few weeks.
You only have to plug it in when you use it (p.ex when you are doing a backup)
I believe so, and the setup is to backup every day, then makes sense to buy a WIRELESS backup drive.
