In those cases giving the patient water through and IV while telling them "this medication will make you feel better" does indeed make them feel better, although that is a rare occurrence

Good point! Yes, techinically 以上 and 以下 does include the number it is associated with. 千円以下would be 1,000yen or less. On legal contracts, instructions, official documents this type of thing is very important. In everyday speech it is a lot less exact. There are many times when 以上 actually does just mean "more than" for all practical purposes. For example, "彼以上のパフォーマンスを期待していますよ！” In this situation it definitely means "more than" as in, "I am expecting a better performance out of you than him!" Or how about the famous line from Vegeta in Dragonball Z when he said "戦闘力、8000以上だ!" In this case he was definitely not saying, "His combat power is equal to or greater than 8000!" He is just saying, "His power is over 8000!" You will actually often have to clarify mid-conversation with whoever you are talking to if they mean to say "over 1000" or if 1000 is actually included. A similar thing often happens with "まで” and even native speakers often mistake "まで” when they are actualy trying to say "までに” (ie.金曜日まで終えてください・金曜日までに終えてください） At this point there are probably many professional translators that will nit-pick me to death, but there are always two schools of thought in the world of translation. Translate the word, or translate the spirit of the word. If you can do both all the time, you are pretty next level. Thanks for keeping me on my toes!
@@tokyoscrambledesigns Thank you a lot for your answer, by the way i didn't search to criticize you, or to test you to keep you on your toes. i don't have a lot of experience with the langage used in real context and so i was just unsure of myself after hearing you translate it that way each time. It s hard to know as abeginner / intermediate learner the range of meaning that a word can have in the real everydaylife. Before that i would have understood the sentence the exemple that you you make in a slighty different way "at least as good of a performance",is "fighting strenght is at least 8000"and i would have say to myself that this is probably a japanese thing to express this things this way .But yes often langages doesn't always follow strict rule and there are things that i will be comfortable with only by using it more with time.Thank you again, since this isa very common word i m sure this will be helpfull sooner or later .
