Thank you! I have been suffering with lower back pain for over a year now. I had a perfectly normal MRI and have been frustrated about the continued pain. YESTERDAY, I was diagnosed with SI joint pain once the pain started radiating down my leg. Thank you so much for demonstrating the stretching exercises. Thank you for this timely topic for me. I was feeling frustrated about not having a diagnosis for so long, but it sounds like I am not alone.

I was just diagnosed with this today. I have been struggling since I was pregnant with my son over 2 years ago. I’ve been told it’s just my sciatica nerve acting up. Nothing has helped. I can literally feel the pain running down both of the SI joints down into my legs. No position is comfortable. I came to your site looking for a video on this because I knew you would be able to explain the best & offer helpful tips. Fingers crossed for a future with relief. Thank you!

I am a physical therapist, practicing over 30 years, and all of those stretches are good. One little trick i was taught by a collegue that really helps me when I have flare ups is to stand some place where you can lift your thigh up (under a countertop or drawer or cutting board) to just a little less than 90 degrees hip flexion and do a nice, easy isometric contraction for a five count. Do three on each leg a couple of times per day. The other thing people should do is see their friendly physical therapist for a progressive abdominal strengthening and stabilization program. 😉

I was diagnosed after having recurring back spasms. My other doctor just kept giving me Flexeril and telling me to go walk. Well after walking it would occur. The rocking motion made it worse so the faster I walked the sooner I would have an issue. My DO noticed and issue with my spine alignment because I was trying to overcompensate for the pain. She helped with the alignment and the muscles and gave me a pamphlet of similar stretches. It helps tremendously. She also found that my pelvis is not level, one side is slightly higher so it makes it worse. It affects me during each cycle and can be annoying. I just listen to my body and know when to hold back or do more. No surgery for me

I have experienced similar symptom on my (presumably) SI joint. Pain is not in the middle of spine, nor upper than belt line, but only a bit left side of my spine below belt line. But it seems it can be misconceived as a pain on disc. As I have heard that when you have problem on your disc, it is not recommendable to overly move your upper body forward so that it can bulge disc and make it worse.
But SI joint seems to need to have different approach. As Dr. Betsy Grunch explained, since I started stretching (lunge squat, lifting leg up toward my upper body against a chair), SI joint pain seems to have gone 90%. I recommend this video. Thanks!

God bless you for sharing this knowledge, advice, and treatment. This may be what I have and no doctor has yet to take me serious, after having " normal" mri and x rays. I can't walk for 3 weeks and and am told it's just sore muscles. Got shamed for going to the ER and "wasting" their time, even though I'm pretty sure the ER doc didnt know how to read them correctly, as he didnt note that I have mild scoliosis and arthritis of the spine. Unless of course it miraculously disappeared! The medical field has become quite cruel. Praying I'll find a compassionate medical profession. Its been rough.

I have EDS and major SI joint dysfunction. I usually have a anterior rotation on the right side of my SI joint. When my SI joint is out, there are times I can’t stand up straight or lift my leg. I work with a physical therapist, who specializes in SI joint issues, and he has a way to reset my SI joint. His technique also helps with my pubis and that pain as well.

Due to AS and HEDS I have chronic "soft tissue Rheumatism" all over my body. Things that I have found that help with the SI specifically are: RFA Radio Frequency Ablations, these usually last several years for me. Chiropractic, SI joint belt when I have to stand for longer than usual. Things that I have found that make it worse are standing or sitting for too long, wearing shoes that are too soft/spongy for too long. Shoes that cause even a slightly raised heel.

I am experiencing chronic SI Joint pain. I get instant relief when my husband does a Chiropractic hip move. This technique is getting less and less successful. My pain is on my right side. I had an untreated sprained ankle that bowed my right leg. It took 10 years to trace it down. By then I had bone on bone on one side of my knee. Got that fixed. Still pain and saw correlation with the instant fix and strength in my knee. Then went to look at back. Scoliosis and spinal stenosis. Ah, my mother's problem I thought. Got a laminectomy on L5. So much better. I had days without pain. Now the chronic pain is back more often. I need husband to do that adjustment more frequently. I will try your stretches faithfully. If it still persists, will find SI doctor.

I've read that the chiropractic approach makes the joint worse over time as it weakens the ligaments holding it together. Do go find an SI doctor. But also find a physiotherapist who specialises in female pelvic problems such as up slips/down slips/rotation of the ilium on the sacrum ect. These would fall under the banner of sacriolic joint dysfunction, which may be corrected by some one like Jerry Hesch of the Hesch institute in Denver, Colerado, USA. If you're in England you could go to Scorpio Clinics in Surrey. If its not joint dysfunction, then you have sacriolitis, although it sounds more like you have the joint dysfunction from what you say. A.
I've just been through 8 months of hell after a fall in my garden. It took me all that time to actually find the above mentioned physios. Last Tuesday I went to Scorpio Clinics and was finally diagnosed with a posterior rotation of the ilium. They treated it in just 20 minutes. I'm not out of the woods yet but am finally on the road to recovery. If you are in the states, look up Jerry Hesch on Google. The Man is a genius with sacriolic joints.
Good luck and God's speed x

I've had this since my second pregnancy ten years ago. I was diagnosed with pelvic girdle pain two years ago after my third pregnancy and sent to pelvic floor therapy. They were the ones that told me that my right SI joint was causing the problems, but unfortunately the therapy didn't seem to help much. I have a primary care doctor that wants me to try physical therapy again.

I’m had a hard time walking without major back pain for exercise for the last nine months and have been going to the chiropractor and getting a massage there too. They never mentioned SI JOINT , even after a 4 months of treatment, weekly, I pointed to the “white spot” on the low back of the skeletal picture. And that didn’t even tripper him nor the massage therapist to think of the SI JOINT.
It wasn’t until I had my wife look at it and she thought to run the massage gun down by the spot I was complaining about, and then it hit her that it was my SI JOINT! Because she had hers successfully treat by a different Chiro/PT.

I have psoriatic arthritis and it was genuinely the most pain I have ever experienced. I could barely move, and I would frequently get “stuck” in bed unable to pull myself up or even roll over. I had to wake up hours before my regular time so that I can slowly work myself up to standing and walking. I would get muscle spasms throughout my lower back as well. finally got back on meds but it made me so weak since then. it’s Infuriating when a dr doesn’t believe their patients.

I havent recently been pregnant nor do I have any autoimmune disease however in the last couple of years, my pain has become more and more frequent. I do work from home on a computer so I'd say sitting is the culprit. I find that if I let it go too long and the pain gets real bad, an anti inflammatory and heat via heating pad, heat patch or hot shower help with instant relief.

Can you show muscle-building exercises to complement the SI joint stretches? The idea is that in addition to ligaments holding the SI joint in place, the muscles also hold the SI joint in place. If you already have a video on this, please show me the link. Thank you.

My husband (32 yo) had a L5-s1 fusion in 2018. Now he’s in debilitating back pain that radiates to both legs but mainly to the right leg. Sometimes the pain is so bad he gets RLE weakness and can’t drive. And he also gets extreme Right groin pain that’s taken him to the ER. He is seeing PT and he’s getting treated for SI joint pain and also gets SI joint injections but doesn’t seem to help much. He recently saw a new neurosurgeon (last appointment was when he was in the military 3 years ago) and said his lumbar MRI was good. I’m wondering if SI joint is causing the weakness and most of his back pain 😢. He’s so young and it hurts to see him suffer.

I think this is what I have. I spend a lot of time seated at work and am in constant pain, and every few months a random stand up or bend over makesmy back spasm and the pain is excruciating, leaving me bed bound for a day or two. I had a MRI which was apparently clear apart from slight arthritis in some fascia joints. I sometimes have a slight pain in my hip, and the occasional tightness in my groin. Does this sound like si to you? My doctor has never mentioned it, just always refers to the arthritis or possible sciatica. I appreciate your time and if you could let me know if this could be the cause

How about post L5-S1 fusion(14 months)? I've done 2 SIJ injections. First one helped, but 2nd made it worse. I do some of the stretches you suggested(not the hyperextend or full twist) with minimal relief. CT scheduled in 10 days to check graft and hardware.

    • @leahenglund
      @leahenglund Год назад +1

If the CT doesn’t show problems with the hardware or graft, try seeing a licensed physical therapist. As a PT it’s not uncommon to see patients who experience pain in the mobile joint next to a joint that’s fused - after joints are fused, you often ask the joints next to them to do a lot of extra movement. A PT can do a personal assessment to see if that is contributing to your pain, and then give you personalized exercises, stretches, and movement modifications to calm your pain, then build your strength to support the joints so you can return to doing activities you love. Best of luck!

So the last exercise, where you're talking about "releasing" the SI joint, should I avoid that one? Isn't hypermobility indicating that it's already too released? Or should I do it? Please, please advise.

I'm getting SI joint injections in 2 days. They are making me do this awake as insurance dosen't cover Anastasia at all. Am I going to be screaming through the entire thing like I did for my BulkAmed procedure where they had to diolate my urethra from 16 to 22 to fit the camera and then do the injections. I screamed, the whole hour.
Every video I have seen the patient is knocked out. I have Medicare and blue cross. This is just not ok.

Can si joint issues cause pain in the back of the heels?

Chiropractors are myopic? That’s a big call. SIJ pain is complicated with many etiologoes. Inflammatory disorders, pregnancy related hormones, and other arthropathies all contribute to SIJ pain. Seeing a chiropractor is a great way to rule out some of the more systemic problems. And way more valuable than doing your “own testing.”
Your own testing is valuable once you’ve got a diagnosis and ruled out other potential factors, just recognise your own testing is not as logical or objective like this man suggests. It’s logical to him because he’s trained to understand biomechanics and pain patterns - not to his patients.
Stop bashing all health professionals other than yourself. Come on you know better!
