I Build a 300Hp Volvo Redblock Engine || Part 1
- Today I start my way to a 300Hp Daily Red-block! Iam restoring and at the same time upgrading my B230FK engine that is in my daily driven Volvo 945.
The goal is a more modern power-curve with at least 300Hp on the wheels, the road to that goal is not set in stone but it will be a budget build for sure.
Thank YOU for watching and Thank You to my sponsor!

Your tutorial of the oil passages was the best version ever explain
Thank you for keeping it real and leaving your "mistakes" in the video. I have more respect for you showing us when you dropped the piston (and I had a good laugh when you put the "It was at this moment..." meme when it happened). Looking forward to more content
Nice Video, good choice with e85 ,can I present to you our home brew over 600hp redblock built in a rental garage? We used the wseco pistons for added reciprocating wieght savings. They have each eaten about 8 valves a piece and still keep chooching. Before we learned we had to pin the crank. Not optimal, but we learned a lot of things to share with those interested in pressing the power limits of a redblock, with little to no budget. We love the old rwd Volvos! I think this is a very detailed video for those learning thier way around. Great job, maybe I probably should create more videos like this.
TIL - belt might slip on the pulley and the valves will loose timing and suicide on the piston
I'm completely new to engines rebuild, did I got the problem right?
wish you made the videos lol
@@heisenbug3542 Pretty sure he meant that the little tab holding the crank pulley in correct position breaks off, the crank pulley spins and messes up the timing.
@TurboWorld uses 16V head, and with that you run the risk of eating valve sallad for dinner if you don't pin the crank pulley. On a 8v head the pistons will not hit the vales if the timing goes haywire unless you are using a very aggressive cam profile If I'm not mistaken.
@@BackmansGarage i did a video about pinning the crank, have not had that issue since. Live and learn, unconditional love! I rumble and tok these days, uncle sam platforms dont let uncle sams people speak, so see ya there boss!
To get 8v head to perform at stock 16v capability, the cams would have enough Lift and duration to make shrapnel salad as well. My perspective of my experience of making 505 wheel and dynos up to it, I have the op engine cradle kit and hope to, this year bolt it in, and push over 700 to the six speed manual and ford 8.8 in my 940 wagon, super glad to be blessed with the opportunity of more smiles per miles capabilites in future events of gas pedal pushing.
Im a die hard chevy v8 guy but wow I got recpect for the red block!! Id really like to mess with one if the chance presents its self. sweet unit. nice video sir !
extremely well explained video! much appreciated :) Fortsett den gode jobben
Can't wait to start my b230fk build here in the UK. Some good info here so Can't wait for part 2. Between this and overboosts series I'm gonna be an expert on redblock building before I even start 🤣
Thanks finally a good video explaining how to volvo assemble a redblock
Glad you liked it!
Oh yes what a great video really enjoyed watching this so nice to see the engine come together like that.
Thanks! I need to catch-up on ur video's, anything new on the Volvos? 😀
Glad to see you back with the uploads, been missing them!
Thanks, Its been busy with the kids now that there are two of them 😄
great video. Enjoy the information on how the assembly of the engine goes. Will be using as a reference when I build my engine.
Thanks 👍 Be sure to check the comments for updates in case I make some mistakes 😄
Alltid kul med lite rödblockskärlek ☺
Oil cooled pistons lower the piston temperature and the tendancy for knocking. Also good because cooler pistons is stronger.
Great timing, I am rebuilding a b230f for as a swap into my 142s! Almost no detailed videos on you tube about rebuilding these engines. Thanks very much for the video! I found many of the same conditions you have, many of the tolerance were slightly larger than spec due to wear. I am only aiming for 150hp NA on carbs so I suspect I should be fine as well. Good luck with the rebuild!
Thanks! Check out overboost racing aa well. Very good videos on rebuilds from a professional. Good luck with your build 👍
I personally wouldnt do carbs for only 150hp. But since your swapping it into a 140 it makes sense it would be a lot easier..
Awesome vid! More of these please👍
This is good stuff. Redblock is the best engine!!
I'm about to swap a b230ft/fk in my 240. This video is very good for me. I rebuild my engine and want some more power. My 91' 240 b230f is also a squirter.
Grym Video med bra innehåll!!
Grymt bra video och intressant!
I didn't watch the video yet but I know it is going to be good👍🏻
Underbart.
Nice job 🙌👍👌😊🙏🍀
From my experience the arrow on the piston will either point towards crank pulley or back of the engine and its todo with trust loading iirc
Yes, i beleve its because the piston pin is slightly offset from the center to reduce the thrust load. And you are right, it can be pointing either way depending on what engine you are working on. 👍
HELL YAEH THIS IS AWESOME
Nice vid my friend.
Excellent brain and English processing/corrections
Thanks 😄
Those old blocks are tough.
I thought you were from the US until you spoke a Swedish :) . Great video 👍🏽
Gotta love a full rebuild!
subbed. I yearn for a b230ft build (I have 16v head sitting, waiting...)
I am currently working on getting a little bit more fun (power) out of my b21ft swapped 245 first though.
Awesome, I used to own a B19ET once :D Good luck with your build 👍
This video was extremely helpful for my project and I look forward to the series. Do you think it is worth it to balance the crankshaft to match the weight of the rods and pistons?
Thanks!
This crank is balanced first by itself and then everything that is bolted on to it (one by one) as well. I would recommend it.
can u do a list from where u have bought every thing
Mycket intressant video.
Mahle parts are standing for good quality.👍👍🇩🇪
27.30 made my day😂😂
Great video! Where did you buy the rods?
Thanks! The rods are from Kg-trimning.
Hi Backman. Great video. Do you mind I have a question. Do you have a parts list for an rebuild?
I do, In one of the build videos description 👍
I was told my ‘92 b230f has the oil squirters.
Oil squirters were added halfway through the '93 year. Some 93s have them some dont.
Atleast this should all be true to volvos imported into the United States.
Are the Glyco bearings good for this kind of use? Theres so many mixed opinions on them. I have to decide between Glyco or ACL on a 400hp engine
No idea, have only herd good things, but I guess we will find out :D
What cleaning solution do you use n the parts washer?
www.mackansgarage.se/fordonsvard-kem-vatskor/vikingtvatt
300 bhp from a b230 is EASY! a b230 fk-block,one 531 cylinderhead,an a-cam, a turbo whit like 04E a/r60 and a better intercooler. 1 bar of boost ,injectors from 850R (485cc:s),a 1:4-1 fuelpreasureregulator,and you make easy 300 bhp ..i made 450 whit allmost this setup..just better rods and an aftermarket efi
which compression ratio would you recomand for 300hp+ ? :)
I think stock turbo ratios will get you to where you want to be 👍 around 8.5-9
How much cost make redblock whit 300hp?:)
how are you going to tune the engine after putting a new turbo?
are you keeping the old ECU ? and please add links to the things you buy.
Have not decided yet, maybe maxxecu street/race or tuned lh 2.4. The Lh is not my best friend atm 😄
Sure, i will get to the links eventually
@@BackmansGarage Tbh, LH gets tuned quite easily.
@@BackmansGarage what about speeduino? It has support for sequential injection and it's compatible with tuner studio.
Driven 400 hp in The Street for 3 years on stuck connecting rods😆
whats block to piston clearance on this build kind sir ?
No idea. I dont own a bore-scope so I left that to be checked with the engine builder.
@@BackmansGarage i see
does 230 have a longer stroke than B200e ? thanks
80mm stroke
You sound like your from America. I only hear an accent sometimes. Its fascinating. Did you learn English from an American?
I used to live in the US when I was a kid. So im holding back from going all in Virginia Mountains accent 😄
Why not just get a forged crank while everything was apart?
💰
I thought the stock bottom end could handle 300 hp, no?
Yes, and at 301 it blows up. I guess with a great tune and a good build they can last a long time at 300 hp, im building for maybe 500hp to be safe.
"It's driven 400,000 kilometers... it's got some miles on it"
fk ROD =400 HP
Is it common to blow a HG on these? If so, you dont have a clue of what you are doing.
I have been running the same engine since 2017 with a stock HG, and no other mods, besides 12.9 studs, its running arround 500 hp on PETROL, not fancy go-fast-juice ... Please stop spread old wives tales from unknownledgeable people writing stories online ...
Aaand .. you don't need squirters for performance build, it would be preferable to delete them. It will cause more challenges when you are reving high and need to seperate oil from crank ventilation.
Stock 13 mm rods are also good for 350 hp+ ...
Stock pistons can easily handle 700 hp ...
If you fuck up af detonate you WILL brake stuff ... Billet or cast, doesn't matter, there is only a slight threshold advantage to billet ...
I'd say headgaskets are fairly common to blow on these. I blew my stock HG this summer after 2 years running about 300hp.
@@plague46 Its because its knocking, otherwise head or block is not level or having the correct surface roughness.
@@MadsFilholm You're probably right. It's not correctly tuned, just chipped running 1.4bar boost
